Over the six months I’ve worked at Penned in the Margins, I’ve realised that perspective, imagination and sensibility lie at the heart of what we do. The personal can become political, an instrument through which to investigate subjects as varied as gender, disability, history and the environment.

The 2019 programme you have in your hands advances our artistic values in these most uncertain times. From cover star Rebecca Tamás’s remarkable WITCH, an occult-inspired debut that celebrates the revolutionary potential of female voices, to Anthony Anaxagorou’s breakthrough collection After the Formalities, a powerful examination of masculinity, race and class, forged through memory and language.

In May we launch Edgelandia, a four-year commissioning platform exploring the remarkable people and places at the edges of the map. Look out for lo-fi video gaming, audio artworks, site-specific sculpture and more in this ambitious and timely project. We also kickstart the UK tour of Antosh Wojcik’s solo show, How To Keep Time, a haunting meditation on dementia which premiered at last year's Edinburgh Fringe.

A few words with raymond antrobus What motivated you to write The Perseverance?

To write a book that only I could write. A book that fused my different identities and experiences without reducing one part of myself over the other. To work through traumas of a younger version of myself, to lean everything on sound, language (including sign) and speech. To “instruct and inspire” as I heard Kaveh Akbar once say.

What would you like your readers to get out of your book?

I got a few emails this week from readers (both hearing and deaf) that told me it’s made them feel less alone in the world. I often feel quite intense loneliness, so making someone feel less alone is a good thing for me to know.

What advice would you give to any budding writers?

Read poetry out loud, seek out community, build your own canon rather than the ones prescribed by institutions. § The Perseverance was awarded the Poetry Book Society Choice for Winter 2018 and was a Poetry Book of the Year in the Guardian and Sunday Times.

Edgelandia Discover the hidden stories and forgotten landscapes of Britain in a new four-year project.

From salt flats to flood zones, abandoned villages to eroding coastlines, Edgelandia will explore the remarkable people and places on the edges of the map: between land and water, wild and reclaimed, real and imagined.

She lives in Norwich, where she is Lecturer in Media Studies at the University of East Anglia. About us Penned in the Margins creates publications and performances for people who are not afraid to take risks. we believe in the power of language to challenge how we think, test new ideas and explore alternative stories. We operate across the arts, collaborating with writers, artists and creative partners using new platforms and technologies. we publish original poetry, literary fiction and non-fiction by the UK's most exciting voices such as Melissa Lee-Houghton, Luke Kennard, Luke Wright and Elizabeth-Jane Burnett. Our books have won or been shortlisted for awards including the Costa, Ted Hughes, Somerset Maugham, Gordon Burn, Dylan Thomas and Guardian First Book. Our productions tour to venues and festivals all over the UK and beyond and have been commissioned by the likes of Brighton Festival, Aldeburgh and Ledbury Poetry Festivals and Southbank Centre. In 2017 we produced Fair Field, a landmark re-imagining of the medieval poem Piers Plowman.
