Welcome In 2017 I’m looking forward to stepping back in time to rediscover stories from Britain’s medieval and colonial histories; diving into ice-cold rivers with poetry about wild swimming; and climbing the South Downs in search of myths and memories.

Four years in the planning, our major new project Fair Field dominates the first half of this year. Comprising original theatrical performances by a team of talented artists, writers and musicians, as well as podcasts, educational workshops and a free exhibition, Fair Field will re-imagine the great medieval ‘poem of crisis’ Piers Plowman for the 21st century, telling the story of Will’s epic journey of self-knowledge across the stunning landscape of the Malvern Hills and into the heart of London.

We are marking 70 years of Indian independence with a new work for theatre by associate artist Siddhartha Bose. No Dogs, No Indians tells the forgotten story of young Indian revolutionary Pritilata Waddedar and explores the effects and legacy of the British in India.

The production opens at Brighton Festival before touring.

In our publishing programme, I’m thrilled to be releasing Luke Wright’s second collection, The Toll — a real return to form by one of our most celebrated performance poets. And we begin an impressive run of first books with debuts by poets Amaan Hyder and ElizabethJane Burnett and landscape writer Justin Hopper. Plus: watch out for paperback editions of two of our most popular recent titles: Luke Kennard’s award-winning poetry collection Cain and Chris McCabe’s genre-defying Cenotaph South.

Exhibition at the National Poetry Library Explore the extraordinary 14th century epic poem Piers Plowman through items and artefacts that bring the medieval world to life, alongside a curated display from the National Poetry Library’s collection – from Patience Agbabi to Seamus Heaney – that demonstrates the enduring influence of the medieval mind on poetry.

The centrepiece of the exhibition is a rare, exquisite manuscript of Piers Plowman (SLV.17) dating to c.1400, which is on loan courtesy of Senate House Library, University of London. Alongside this medieval treasure are two new commissions by contemporary artists in response to the poem. Larry Achiampong’s powerful video installation ‘Sunday Best (Reprise)’ evokes the intimacy and intensity of devotional prayer, whilst Nicola Jedrzejczak’s stunning panorama of Langland’s ‘Fair Feeld Ful of Folk’ captures the feel of a bustling medieval landscape through intricate paper sculpture.

Using just his voice and a Roland TD-4KP electric drumkit, Antosh Wojcik explores the effects of dementia on speech, memory and motor skills.

Assigning rhythms to family members, Antosh attempts to build a ‘voice-percussion gun’ to destroy inherited Alzheimer’s.

Poems become beats become glitches in time in this poignant and mesmeric display of live drumming and spoken word.

He won an Eric Gregory Award in 2005 and was shortlisted for the 2007 Forward Prize for Best Collection. He lectures at the University of Birmingham. Three intertwining stories explore the effects and legacy of the British in India in a new play by Siddhartha Bose to mark the 70th anniversary of Indian independence.

Now in 2017, a man returns from London on the news of his father’s death. In the New India, he encounters steel magnates, supermodels and tech millionaires, but is haunted by ghosts from the past.

About Penned in the Margins Penned in the Margins creates publications and performances for people who are not afraid to take risks.

We believe in the power of language to challenge how we think, test new ideas and explore alternative stories. We operate across the arts, collaborating with writers, artists and creative partners using new platforms and technologies.

From small beginnings as a reading series in a converted railway arch in south London, Penned in the Margins has grown over the last decade to be a respected literary arts company producing new work live, in print and online. This unique blend of publishing and event production characterises our distinctive model in the cultural landscape. In 2015 Penned in the Margins joined Arts Council England’s National Portfolio in recognition of our innovative work.

Our publishing list numbers over sixty publications across poetry, experimental fiction and literary non-fiction, and includes acclaimed titles such as The Shipwrecked House by Claire TrĂŠvien, Midland by Honor Gavin and the best-selling poetry anthology Adventures in Form. Each book is carefully selected, painstakingly edited and lovingly designed from our office in east London.

We curate and produce a wide range of events and productions: from bespoke literary salons to touring theatre shows, and from performance lectures to site-specific audio tours.

Collaboration is at the heart of what we do, bringing artists from different fields together to create innovative and invigorating new work. We present shows all over the UK and internationally: from small and unconventional spaces to renowned venues such as the Southbank Centre; Snape Maltings, Aldeburgh; the Sage, Gateshead; and NCPA, Mumbai.
