Welcome Firing sound effects, manning the Instagram account, keeping the office blackboard fresh with new poems...

These are just some of the things I get up to in my role as Sales & Marketing Coordinator at Penned in the Margins. Since my arrival in May 2015, I’ve found myself working on all areas of the business, on projects that span theatre, publishing and live literature. In my first week I was even called into duty to accept the Most Innovative Publisher gong at the Saboteur Awards, due to the director’s involvement in a freak go-karting accident...

However varied my days get, I find myself returning to the poetry I first fell for as an admirer of Penned in the Margins. I am hugely excited to be involved in publishing new work from two of those writers - Melissa Lee-Houghton and Claire Trévien - in 2016. Adding to that a foray into play-texts with Luke Wright’s awardwinning epic poem What I Learned from Johnny Bevan (easily the best thing I saw at the 2015 Edinburgh Festival); a remarkable debut from Charlotte Newman; a second book from Polari Prize-winner John McCullough; and a long-awaited new collection from one of my favourite poets of all time, Luke Kennard – this 2016 poetry list is one I’m looking forward to with huge anticipation.

In non-fiction, we’re rifling through the dark histories of the South Downs with Justin Hopper & wandering among the gravestones of Nunhead Cemetery with Chris McCabe. I’m eagerly awaiting our longest ever London run with Hannah Silva’s Schlock! at the Rosemary Branch Theatre in November; Hannah’s innovative performance is followed by provocative panel discussions on everything from feminism to d/Deaf art. We’re commissioning some incredible artists including Tom McCarthy, Aisha Devi and Inua Ellams to perform new work for The EVP Sessions - a series of shows in Liverpool and London this Autumn. And. finally, we give you a taster of the ambitious productions we’re planning for 2017.

THE EVP S E S S IO N S Electronic Voice Phenomena returns with a series of electrifying live sessions.

Fusing experimental literature, new music, performance and video art, The EVP Sessions is inspired by parapsychologist Konstantin Raudive’s infamous observations of ‘Electronic Voice Phenomena’ – ghostly murmurs and vocal glitches heard in radio and tape players. Artists drawn from across the UK and Europe will respond to Raudive’s provocation in three pairs of live shows at The Bluecoat in Liverpool and Shoreditch Town Hall in London. These atmospheric, historic venues will be rewired with haunting performances and new commissions of sound, voice and text.

EVP is a collaboration between Penned in the Margins and Liverpool arts innovators Mercy. Expect to be thrilled, entertained and haunted in a show audiences have described as “mind-boggling” and “perplexingly good”.

Will is waiting out the floods alone in his Ledbury council house, his wife and daughter lost in the tide of people moving east. Will is searching for ‘the Truth’, broadcasting urgent political messages on his Smartphone to anyone who will listen...

Fair Field is an ambitious new multi-arts production about politics, faith and how to be a good person. Inspired by the medieval epic poem Piers Plowman, Fair Field will be presented across the rugged landscape of the Malvern Hills and in the heart of London, on stage and in the street, online and on foot.

Using just his voice and a Roland TD-4KP electric drumkit, Antosh Wojcik explores the effects of dementia on speech, memory and motor skills. Assigning rhythms to family members, Antosh attempts to build a ‘voice-percussion gun’ to destroy inherited Alzheimer’s. Poems become beats become glitches in time in this poignant and mesmeric display of live drumming and spoken word.

After a brief stint indexing the entire back catalogue of The Erotic Review, she worked as a journalist and publicist for a family law firm, writing articles for national newspapers while also contributing freelance reviews to The Observer, The New Statesman and Poetry Review, among others. She was shortlisted for The Scotsman’s Allen Wright Award for theatre criticism. Charlotte lives in London with her husband, the poet James Brookes, and works as a political communications consultant, specialising in healthcare. Trammel is her first full collection.

About Penned in the Margins Penned in the Margins creates publications and performances for people who are not afraid to take risks.

We believe in the power of language to challenge how we think, test new ideas and explore alternative stories. We operate across the arts, collaborating with writers, artists and creative partners using new platforms and technologies.

From small beginnings as a reading series in a converted railway arch in south London, Penned in the Margins has grown over the last decade to be a respected literary arts company producing new work live, in print and online. This unique blend of publishing and event production characterises our distinctive model in the cultural landscape. In 2015 Penned in the Margins joined Arts Council England’s National Portfolio in recognition of our innovative work.

Our publishing list numbers over sixty publications across poetry, experimental fiction and literary non-fiction, and includes acclaimed titles such as The Shipwrecked House by Claire TrĂŠvien, Midland by Honor Gavin and the bestselling poetry anthology Adventures in Form. Each book is carefully selected, painstakingly edited and lovingly designed from our office in east London.

We curate and produce a wide range of events and productions: from bespoke literary salons to touring theatre shows, and from performance lectures to site-specific audio tours.
