Advances in Clinical Care and Education

Welcome ACCE//DAY

It is our great pleasure to welcome alumni, faculty, staff, students and friends to the annual Advances in Clinical Care and Education (ACCE) Day 2025.

ACCE Day will celebrate faculty, resident and student scholarship in community service, educational initiatives, and advances in clinical care. We warmly welcome our keynote speaker, Dr. Marni L. Oakley, Dean, University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Oakley will lecture on “What Got You Here Will Not Get You There: Lessons in Leadership Growth.”

In addition to the keynote speaker, the day’s program will include faculty presentations that celebrates Penn Dental Medicine’s LEADS (Legacy, Empowerment, Aspiration, Discovery, and Social Consciousness) initiative. These presentations will highlight service and leadership at local, national, and global levels to drive change and advance global oral health. A poster session and competition will recognize outstanding presentations with Travel Awards, Honors Student Awards, and Community Oral Health (COH) Student Awards.

Last, on behalf of the ACCE Day Committee, we would like to express heartfelt gratitude to the faculty who will serve as poster judges today. Your time, expertise, and unwavering commitment to our students have been instrumental in making this event a resounding success.

Marnie L. Oakley, DMD

Dean, University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine

After graduating from the School of Dental Medicine in 1992, she served an active duty, four-year tour as a Dental Officer in the United States Navy. Dr. Oakley was responsible for the development and implementation of the School of Dental Medicine Comprehensive Care Program. She also served as the site visit coordinator during the successful 2010 American Dental Association (ADA) Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) site visit. Dr. Oakley also served as Chair of the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) Annual Session Planning Committee for two consecutive years, for which she received a Presidential Citation. As a graduate fellow of the ADEA’s Leadership Institute, she served in officer positions in several ADEA committees and groups. She is a Senior Consultant for AAL, the Academy of Advancing Leadership—where she offers one-on-one consulting services and seminars on various leadership topics to academicians across the country. Dr. Oakley works extensively in various areas of leadership development that include, creating a positive culture, leading difficult conversations, resolving conflict, and managing change. As a proud alumna of the Berkeley Institute of Executive Coaching, she leverages her certification and experience to help executives discover and reveal the best versions of themselves.

Dr. Oakley maintains membership in numerous professional organizations including the American Dental Association (ADA), Pennsylvania Dental Association (PDA), Dental Society of Western Pennsylvania (DSWP), Omicron Kappa Upsilon and the Academy of General Dentistry.

Recently, Dr. Oakley was awarded the 2024 Impact Award and is recognized as a 2024 Trailblazer in Health Care by City & State Pennsylvania.

Being Part of Organized Dentistry: American Board of Endodontics

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The presentation has 2 parts. I will share my journey in the dental field that has brought me to the place I stand today. The other aspect will be discussing the structure of organized dentistry in Endodontics. Special emphasis will be on American Board of Endodontics and what role it plays in the field in the United States.

• How to get involved in organized dentistry?

• Role of ABE – American Board of Endodontics

Dr. Kohli is Clinical Associate Professor and Director for CE & International Visiting Scholar and the Master’s in Advanced Dentistry Studies Program (MADS) at the Endodontic department. She is a member of the Dean’s advisory council. She earned her B.D.S. in India. She pursued her D.M.D. and endodontic education at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. She is on the Scientific Advisory Board as a reviewer for JOE, IEJ and other endodontic journals. Dr. Kohli has published in peer reviewed journals. Her publications have been recognized as the best clinical research paper multiple times. She has served on the AAE’s Constitution and Bylaws and Research & Scientific Affairs Committees. She is the current President of the American Board of Endodontics. Dr. Kohli maintains multiple private practice locations.

• Understand the responsibilities of an Editor-in-Chief and a peer reviewer.

Dr. Glick is the Fields-Rayant Professor and Executive Director, Center for Integrative Global Oral Health, School of Dental Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Glick has authored more than 350 publications, including original research articles, editorials, and book chapters, and has authored, edited and co-edited 10 textbooks. Dr. Glick is the past Dean, School of Dental Medicine, University at Buffalo, past-President of the American Board of Oral Medicine and served as Editor-in-Chief of The Journal of the American Dental Association from 2005 to 2020.

Beyond the Operatory: Leadership, Advocacy, and Advancing Pediatric Oral Health

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This presentation will explore the untapped potential that pediatric dental professionals have in shaping the future of oral health. Moving beyond the operatory, this session will focus on how leadership, advocacy, and a commitment to advancing pediatric oral health can transform not only individual careers but also the communities we serve. By sharing personal experiences and insights, we will explore the journey from clinical practice to leadership and advocacy, illustrating the powerful impact dental professionals can have in improving access to care, influencing public health policies, and addressing oral health disparities.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

• Attendees will learn how leadership within the dental community can drive change, improve care delivery, and create new opportunities for dental professionals to influence the future of oral health.

• Participants will gain insight into how advocacy can shape public policies, improve access to care, and address disparities in pediatric oral health at local, state, and national levels.

• Attendees will leave with practical tools and inspiration to step beyond the operatory, engaging in leadership roles and advocacy efforts that extend their influence and improve pediatric oral health outcomes in their communities.

Dr. Lauren C. Yap, DMD, MPH, is a board-certified pediatric dentist and Assistant Program Director at the University of Pennsylvania’s/Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s Post-doctoral Pediatric Residency Program. She earned both a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) and a Master of Public Health (MPH) through a dual degree program at Temple University. A passionate advocate for oral health equity, she holds leadership roles in the ADA, AAPD, and PDA, where she serves as Vice-Chair of Government Relations and Public Policy Advocate for Pennsylvania. Dr. Yap is a published author, national speaker, and recipient of both the PDA and ADA Ten Under 10 Awards, recognized for her contributions to advocacy, community service, mentorship, and pediatric clinical care.

Dr. Meehan is the Chief Dental Officer and Assistant Dean in the Office of Clinical Affairs and holds an academic appointment as Professor of Clinical Oral Medicine. A retired Navy Captain, he held numerous educational leadership roles in the United States Navy Dental Corps culminating in his service as Dean of the Naval Postgraduate Dental School in Bethesda, Maryland.
