Penn Dental Medicine

University of Pennsylvania // Philadelphia, PA 19104 4TH

welcome

IT IS OUR GREAT PLEASURE TO WELCOME ALUMNI, FACULTY, STAFF, STUDENTS, AND FRIENDS TO THE FOURTH ANNUAL CENTER FOR INNOVATION & PRECISION DENTISTRY (CiPD) SYMPOSIUM.

The CiPD Symposium will celebrate dentists, scientists, and engineers transforming oral health. We warmly welcome our guest speakers, Dr. Drew Weissman, Dr. Joseph DeSimone, and Dr. Edward Zuckerberg. Dr. Weissman, 2023 Nobel Laureate in Medicine or Physiology, the Roberts Family Professor in Vaccine Research and Director of the Penn Institute for RNA Innovation at the Perelman School of Medicine, honors us by joining us for a fireside chat and delivering the morning plenary, “Nucleoside Modified mRNA-LNP Therapeutics.” Dr. DeSimone, the Sanjiv Sam Gambhir Professor of Translational Medicine and Chemical Engineering at Stanford University and Co-Director of the Canary Center, will deliver the afternoon plenary, “The Delicate Interplay Between Light, Interfaces and Design: The Complex Dance that Allows 3D Printing to Scale to Manufacturing.” Dr. Zuckerberg, Chief Executive Officer at Painless Social Media LLC and Venture Partner at Revere Partners, will lecture on “Bridging Oral Health & Systemic Wellness: Emerging Research & Future Innovations.”

Throughout the day, we will showcase CiPD faculty, trainees and students working on emerging applications and new affordable therapies — from craniofacial and tissue regeneration to oral microbiomes — using advanced materials, nano/biotechnology, mRNA, AI and robotics. A poster session competition will be featured during lunch.

We hope you enjoy, interact, and help us move forward in addressing the unmet needs to transform the future of oral health care.

DREW WEISSMAN, MD, PhD

Drew Weissman, MD, PhD, is the Roberts Family Professor in Vaccine Research and Director of the Penn Institute for RNA Innovation at the Perelman School of Medicine. He is recognized for his work alongside Katalin Karikó in discovering the modified mRNA technology, which has launched a new era of vaccine and therapeutic development. Their mRNA research breakthrough has been used in both the BioNTech/Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines and has revolutionized the field of vaccine development. Dr. Weissman’s current research focuses on developing a pancoronavirus vaccine to stop the next coronavirus epidemic, a universal flu vaccine, cancer therapeutics, a vaccine to prevent herpes, as well as developing in vivo gene therapy to allow worldwide use and a variety of protein therapeutics delivered with mRNA-LNPs. He has recently expanded his efforts in building scientific and medical equity and is developing the full RNA-LNP ecosystem of development, testing, and use in low and middle income countries.

Dr. Weissman earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in biochemistry and enzymology from Brandeis University in 1981 and his M.D. and Ph.D. in immunology and microbiology in 1987 at Boston University School of Medicine. Following a residency at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, he took a fellowship at the National Institutes of Health, where he worked with Dr. Anthony Fauci.

Dr. Weissman hold many patents and has published over 400 papers. He has been recognized with numerous awards including the Lasker-DeBakey Clinical Medical Research Award, the Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences, the Albany Medical Center Prize in Medicine and Biomedical Research, and the Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology.

JOSEPH M. DESIMONE, PhD

Joseph M. DeSimone is the Sanjiv Sam Gambhir Professor of Translational Medicine and Chemical Engineering at Stanford University. He is also Co-Director of the Canary Center, Founding Faculty Director of the Center for STEMM Mentorship, and the Interim Vice Chair of Strategy in the Department of Radiology at Stanford. He holds primary appointments in Radiology and Chemical Engineering with courtesy appointments in Chemistry, Materials Science and Engineering, and the Graduate School of Business. Previously, DeSimone was a professor of chemistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and of chemical engineering at North Carolina State University. He is also Cofounder, Board Member, and former CEO (2014 - 2019) of the additive manufacturing company, Carbon.

DeSimone is responsible for numerous breakthroughs in his career in areas including green chemistry, medical devices, nanomedicine, and 3D printing. He has published >390 scientific articles and holds >240 patents. In 2016 DeSimone was recognized by President Obama with the National Medal of Technology and Innovation. He is one of only 25 individuals elected to all three branches of the U.S. National Academies (Sciences, Medicine, Engineering). DeSimone received his B.S. in Chemistry from Ursinus College (1986) and Ph.D. in Chemistry from Virginia Tech (1990).

EDWARD J. ZUCKERBERG, DDS, FAGD

Edward J. Zuckerberg, D.D.S.,F.A.G.D. is a 1978 Graduate of NYU College of Dentistry. He owned his own practices in Brooklyn and Dobbs Ferry, NY from 1979-2013 and has always been an early adopter of technology, introducing his first PC in the office in 1986 and completely fully networking his home-based office with broadband access in 1996. Dr. Zuckerberg’s early adoption of technologies including digital radiography, CAD/CAM & creation of a paperless office caught the attention of Industry leaders who enlisted him to lecture, write articles and beta test new technologies. The advanced technology in the home helped launch his son, Mark’s, the founder of Facebook, interest in computers. With his wife of 45 years, Karen, a retired Psychiatrist, they also have 3 daughters, Randi, former Marketing Director at Facebook and now CEO of Zuckerberg Media, Donna, who received her Classics Ph.D at Princeton and is now an author & Arielle, who is a partner in a Financial Firm in San Francisco, as well as 10 grandchildren. Dr. Zuckerberg lectures nationally and internationally on the Oral Systemic Connection, serves as a Venture Partner at Revere Partners, the First Independent Venture Fund for Oral Health, acts as the Chief Dental Officer for Viome and the Chief Education Officer for both Cloud Dentistry & Oral BioLife in addition to treating patients part time in Cupertino, CA. Dr. Zuckerberg has co-authored several textbooks and is a frequent webinar and podcast guest as well as a regular contributor to Dental Journals.
