Academic Options THE FOUR-YEAR DMD PROGRAM and curriculum at Penn Dental Medicine not only reflects a strong commitment to developing knowledge and skills in both oral science and oral health care, but also offers the flexibility for you to tailor your education to your professional interests and goals. As one of 12 schools within the University of Pennsylvania, Penn Dental Medicine is uniquely positioned to encourage a depth of opportunities for interdisciplinary study across other professional disciplines.

Here, students find an education that builds excellence in dental medicine by encouraging individual interests and strengths to flourish and grow.

DUAL-DEGREES Along with a DMD, interested students who meet the requirements can pursue a Master of Science in Education, a Master of Public Health, a Master of Bioethics, a Master in Business Administration, a Master of Bioengineering, a Master of Science in Translational Research, J.D. of Law, or a Master of Law.

HONORS DEGREE PROGRAM Students with the interest, motivation, and required academic achievement can earn their DMD with honors in research, clinical dentistry, community health, medically complex patients/oral medicine, and radiological sciences.

SELECTIVES PROGRAM Extensive elective courses allow students to study areas that fall outside the core or compulsory portion of the curriculum.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH Being engaged in the surrounding community and striving to make it a better place is a key piece of Penn’s mission and educational goals. Through the School’s varied outreach programs, students provide much-needed oral health services to the community, while broadening their understanding of public health issues. In total, students log nearly 9,600 service hours each year, serving more than 20,000 residents in surrounding Philadelphia neighborhoods.

NATIONAL & INTERNATIONAL EXTERNSHIPS As a fourth-year student, you will have the chance to put your skills and knowledge of hospital-related dental specialties and medicine related to dentistry to work through a four-week hospital externship. You may decide to work in a hospital affiliated with Penn, or you may choose from a number of approved hospitals across the country and around the world.

Clinical Education AT PENN DENTAL MEDICINE, you will build your skill and competence as a practitioner with a depth of clinical experiences.

Here, you will learn to apply the latest techniques and technologies within general dentistry, and also be exposed to the leading advances in specialty care through rotations in each of the School’s specialty clinics, the training ground for our respected postdoctoral programs. Clinical experiences begin your first year as you learn to assist upperclassmen on the clinic floor. Students and faculty handle approximately 22,000 patient visits each year in the School’s teaching clinics, with a diverse patient population that ensures a wide range of clinical cases.

THE LATEST IN DENTAL TECHNOLOGY Beginning with your preclinical training, you will use leadingedge technology to develop your manual dexterity skills on high-tech, simulation units. Starting year one in the clinic, you will have exposure to the latest applications in dental medicine, from advanced aesthetics and implantology to the use of ceramic materials and CAD/CAM technology. Electronic patient records/treatment planning, digital radiography, intraoral scanners, and the use on an operating microscope are part of your clinical training as well.

Equally important to the technical skills you will develop are the intangible skills you will gain through your clinical education in small group settings.

Cheung Advanced Dental Care Clinic (Focuses on advanced cases in restorative and aesthetic dentistry in conjunction with the prosthodontics residency program and Penn Dental Medicine CAD/CAM Ceramic Center, dedicated to the study and application of dental technologies in computer aided design/computer aided manufacturing and all-ceramic restorative materials.)

Research PENN DENTAL MEDICINE IS RENOWNED for its rich history of research and scholarship and continues to be an international leader in the generation of new knowledge and treatment modalities to improve oral health. Interdisciplinary research is a hallmark of the University and students and faculty collaborate extensively with researchers across disciplines. For many Penn Dental Medicine students, participating in research is an important piece of the educational experience that will help to shape their perspectives for years to come.

TOMORROW’S DENTAL SOLUTIONS Penn Dental Medicine research spans the basic and clinical sciences, translating new knowledge into therapies and practices impacting our understanding of oral disease and advancing patient care. Regardless of the topic, experiencing the research process will change the way you work with others, make decisions, and solve problems.

GETTING INVOLVED IN DENTAL RESEARCH • Summer Research Program: Through this School-funded program, you can choose faculty preceptors in the basic or clinical sciences, collaborating on faculty-sponsored research over the summer break.

• Honors Degree Program: You can apply to research honors at the time of admission to Penn Dental Medicine or the midpoint of your first or second years, working with a faculty mentor on a research project over a one or two-year period.

• The Vernon J. Brightman Research Society, an active student group that connects you to a network of resources.
