It is our great pleasure to welcome alumni, faculty, staff, students, and friends to the 2026 Advances in Clinical Care and Education (ACCE) Day.
ACCE Day celebrates the scholarship of our faculty, residents, and students, highlighting excellence in community service, educational innovation, and advancements in clinical care. We are especially honored to welcome our keynote speaker, Lisa Simon, MD, DMD—Assistant Professor at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School—who will present “Oral Health Matters: Now More Than Ever.”
In addition to the keynote address, today’s program features presentations focused on navigating opportunities and challenges in oral healthcare in the 21st century. Sessions will explore pathways to building purpose-driven careers through service, teaching, and community engagement, as well as perspectives on clinical practice, leadership, and academic futures. The poster session and competition will showcase outstanding work, with recognition through the Acadental Award, ACCE Day Travel Award, Award for Excellence in Community Oral Health Scholarship, Award for Excellence in PDM Honors, Award for Independent Research, Award for Educational Initiatives, and the Oral Cancer Care and Research Travel Award.

Oral Health Matters: Now More Than Ever
In this presentation, we will discuss the historical background of the dental field, and how dentists and future dentists can play an important role in advocacy for oral health. While acknowledging real challenges— from shifting federal priorities to ongoing Medicaid and Medicare limitations—the focus will be on identifying opportunities to improve access, equity, and quality of care in meaningful, practical ways.
Drawing on examples from interdisciplinary education and practice, the talk will highlight how collaboration across medicine, dentistry, and public health can strengthen both training and patient outcomes, and how advocacy must play an important part in dental practice.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
• Describe the history behind the separation of medical and dental education and practice.
• List the differences in dental coverage between Medicare, Medicaid, and private dental coverage
• Name three ways an attendee can be an advocate for oral health equity.
BIO
Lisa Simon, MD, DMD is a physician, dentist, and health services researcher. She practices primary care at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and in Rosebud, South Dakota with the Indian Health Service. Her NIHfunded research focuses on applying econometric methods and analysis of large datasets to key questions in oral health policy and the effect of dental access on health outcomes. She is an Assistant Professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine and Primary Care at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, where she is also the Director of the Initiative to Integrate Oral Health and Medicine.

This presentation highlights the rewarding nature of treating underserved populations and pursuing an academic career path.

• Appreciate the variety of ways to find purpose in a dental career.
• Understand how part-time or full-time academia can reduce musculoskeletal issues.
BIO
Dr. Cassandra Gafford is the Clinical Director of Community Oral Health Sites and Assistant Professor at Penn Dental Medicine. She graduated from Haverford College in 2009, where she received a B.A. in Classical Culture and Society. She earned her D.M.D from Penn Dental Medicine in 2013 with Honors in both Clinical Dentistry and Community Oral Health, receiving the Dr. Earle Banks Hoyt Teaching Award. After completing a GPR at Abington Memorial Hospital, she worked in private practice as a general dentist while teaching parttime at Penn Dental Medicine. She was an Assistant Group Leader from 2018-2025 and was the Director of Patient Admissions Rotations from 2023-2025. In addition to her role as Clinical Director of COH, she treats patients at Penn Dental Family Practice.

Dr. Kristen Leong practices general dentistry in Philadelphia. She completed a General Practice Residency at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, NJ, where she served as Chief Resident and was named Resident of the Year. She earned her Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) and a Master’s in Higher Education Administration from the University of Pennsylvania, where she also completed a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and Chemistry.
Dr. Leong is committed to lifelong learning through continuing education and advanced clinical training to remain current with developments in dentistry. She is a certified Invisalign® provider and a member of the American Academy of Facial Esthetics, as well as the American Dental Association, Pennsylvania Dental Association, and the Philadelphia County Dental Society. Her clinical approach is compassionate and evidence-based, with a focus on patient education and shared decision-making. She is also actively involved in mentoring students interested in pursuing careers in dentistry.

BIO
Dr. Daniel T. Richardson grew up in Edmonton, Canada. He received his undergraduate degree from Oakwood College and his Doctorate of Dental Medicine from the University of Pennsylvania. He then obtained his medical degree at Harvard Medical School.
Prior to entering private practice, Dr. Richardson completed a rigorous oral and maxillofacial surgical internship and residency program at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvardaffiliated hospitals, including Children’s Hospital of Boston and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. With a special interest in dento-skeletal deformities, he then completed an additional fellowship year at the Posnick Center for Facial Plastic Surgery in Chevy Chase, MD.
