The Class of 2016 recognizes two outstanding teachers who have had a significant impact on our class and all of Penn Charter, each in her own way These two women have been much more than just classroom instructors; they have been mentors, counsellors, and friends to much of the Penn Charter community.

Parveen Roberts is not retiring, much to the delight of future Physics students, and can be described as someone who exudes a positive energy, one who is sure to brighten anyone’s day Mrs Roberts started teaching at Penn Charter in 1994, sharing her knowledge of mathematics and science with middle and upper school students throughout the years. She developed new curriculum innovations in the science department that strengthened her courses and gave students numerous opportunities to explore their love for science As technology has enhanced all disciplines, especially the sciences, Mrs. Roberts has been among the leaders in developing, testing, and applying the latest classroom skills, and sharing what she knows with colleagues and students Mrs Roberts’ support for her students is not restricted to the classroom, but extends to athletic events, performances, field trips, and class retreats. Her great sense of humor and warm personality set an exciting tone for Physics events, such as PHAT and the egg drop In the Penn Charter community, "Parv", as she is known to her students, is not only an energetic instructor, but also a caring friend and mentor to all
Social Studies teacher and advisor to the Model United Nations Club Sarah Sharp is retiring, and in a way, graduating with our class this June. Teacher Sarah began her Penn Charter career in 1998 and has helped advance the Penn Charter curriculum throughout her years of teaching Due to her passion for the humanities, she has developed many new elective courses including The Middle East, Global Studies, and Castro’s Backyard. She is perhaps best known, and greatly respected, for her high standards in the AP United States History class, and this year’s seniors are especially grateful to her In every one of her courses, Teacher Sarah seeks to bring out the very best in her students and pushes them to reach beyond simply studying a textbook. Teacher Sarah has made many trips abroad to countries like Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Cuba, in order to further her own knowledge and enhance her teaching Dr Sarah Sharp reminds the Penn Charter community that knowledge and exploration are found both on and away from the campus, and her career at Penn Charter has inspired many teachers and students.

We appreciate the valuable instruction and wisdom Parv and Teacher Sarah have given us; we recognize them for their dedication and commitment to their students, year after year; and we thank them for their kindness and support to the entire Penn Charter community. It is our honor to dedicate the Class Record 2016 to Parveen Roberts and Sarah Sharp.
Our school never stands still: not in growing and innovating over 325+ years, certainly not in our day by day education; even the yearbook experiments with change once in a while. For the first time, the Class Record offers some glimpses of the motion of the school year. Just search and download the Aurasma app for the iPhone, iPad or Android device, and create an account Press "discover auras " , search, and follow the top "PCClassRecord's Public Auras" channel. er community seeks to embrace and explore diversity As a Quaker institution, nclusion, and justice are key values. Penn Charter continues to honor the ns, voices, and experiences of students of all social identifiers: age, ability, ethnicity, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, and more.
Imana Legette, Director of Diversity and Inclusion, is committed to helping deepen the Penn Charter community’s understanding of social identity and cultural competency Senior Isiah Powell-Taylor said that he “deeply values the respect for [his] cultural history”, and how it is cultivated through the various events at Penn Charter that are centered around diversity

As part of Penn Charter students’ ongoing commitment to diversity awareness and education, a group of students and faculty traveled to Tampa, Florida for the 2015 Student Diversity Leadership Conference Teachers Mr Williams, Ms Reedich, Ms Sosa and Ms Legette joined students Ayana, Priya, Evan, Evan, Paige and Anu at the SLDC Senior Evan says that “SDLC was honestly the best conference I’ve ever been to… the people you meet, the stories you hear it was a very safe place and completely life changing for me ”
Throughout the year, the “Movies that Matter” series screened movies that explored issues related to race and diversity The Penn Charter community saw and discussed recent movies such as Selma and Fruitvale Station that address the struggles of minorities and disadvantaged groups in both the past and the present

The dedication began with an 11-minute workout in recognition of Blaine’s jersey number. Head of School, Dr. Darryl Ford, opened the remarks portion of the ceremony: “Blaine had a captivating smile, and she pulled me in with her suggestions for improvements. This space is not just a little bit better, it is transformed.” Both Blaine’s soccer and lacrosse jerseys were hung on the walls of the weight room in remembrance of her commitment to her teams while at Penn Charter.
Mr. Larrabee, Director of Upper School, said he will always remember Blaine as a combination of three colors: yellow, “the color of the mind and the intellect”, blue, “the color of trust, honesty, and loyalty”, and green, which “signifies balance and harmony.” Blaine possessed all of these traits and more, and she exercised them in every part of her life, whether it be on the field with her team, where she constantly challenged herself physically and mentally; in the classroom, where she enjoyed talking about the “big stuff” like religion and politics; or in exchanges with friends and family, where Blaine’s compassion proved her to be the most dependable and loving friend, sister, and daughter.

November 14, 2015 prompted a range of emotions for the Penn Charter community. Students, faculty, and families all gathered for the exciting sporting and art events that would take place throughout the 129th PC/GA Day. However, at 8:30 a.m., a bittersweet sentiment fell over the school as we grieved for the loss, but celebrated the achievements, of one very important and beloved member of our community, Blaine A. Steinberg OPC ’11 Penn Charter dedicated the newly renovated Center for Fitness and Performance in the Graham Athletics Building to Blaine.

Blaine Steinberg will always be a cherished member of the Penn Charter community and students will know of her for years to come. The dedication ceremony concluded with comments from Blaine’s father, Sid: “As we go forward we hope that, not just today or in two months, but for generations to come [people] will be inspired… when they are wrung dry, they will look up at Blaine’s jerseys and say, ‘ I got better today. For me, for my team, for Penn Charter’ ” and, of course, for Blaine. 93

Community service is an essential part of Penn Charter life On October 16th, Penn Charter’s Upper School students did service at 25 locations in the Philadelphia area for the Louie Savino Day of Service. The day began with an inspiring and informative speech by local community service celebrity Mason Wartman, owner of Rosa’s Fresh Pizza Wartman’s innovative business model allows customers to pre-pay for a slice of pizza so that the homeless have the opportunity to claim a free, hot, delicious meal. Wartman described the lessons in resilience that he has learned from those he serves, an experience that was replicated by Penn Charter students throughout the day Students did meaningful service at SHARE, the Hood and Fair Hill cemeteries, Whosoever Gospel Mission, Face to Face, historic Cliveden, Norris Square Civic Association, Our Closet's warehouse, Smith Memorial Playground, St James School and many more They painted, packed and served food, raked leaves, sorted mulch, planted flowers and vegetables, sorted clothing and groceries, and helped organize a library After returning to school, students and teachers gathered for a final Meeting for Worship to reflect on their experiences

THURSDAY WEDNESDAY TUESDAY MONDAY

Randy Granger, a visual arts teacher at Penn Charter for 41 years and an expert in historic preservation, applied for the marker. He had the honor of unveiling the marker at the audience’s countdown. The senior class was present, along with the third and eighth grades, who were selected because they are studying Pennsylvania history and civics, respectively.
Representatives from each of those grades spoke at the podium.
Senior Class President Jonathan Weiss began the ceremony by welcoming students, faculty, officials, and friends.
“Historically, we led the movement to make education available to everybody
in America and can still feel its effects today,” Weiss said. “ …We can pride ourselves in honoring it so well, so long as we thank those who came before us and continue preparing those who will come after.” Troi Rutherford, an eighth grader, spoke about the school’s early history, and Alara Arkan, a third grader, described Penn’s founding of Penn Charter: “He wanted a public school so that children could be educated to become good citizens for the democratic government that he was setting up in Pennsylvania ” “I can think of no better way to celebrate Penn’s birthday and his school than with today’s program,” Head of School Darryl J. Ford said. Ford
On October 23rd, the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission dedicated a historical marker to William Penn Charter School. Faculty, friends, and students from the 3rd, 8th, and 12th grades celebrated with special guests former governor Ed Rendell, Philadelphia City Councilman Curtis Jones, and commission member Martin Rosenblum.

also said, “I note our faculty and staff’s continued commitment to educate our students to live lives that make a difference, and I am certain that today’s students will make meaningful contributions to society as their lives unfold.” Former Governor Rendell commented that “our young people are our most important resource ” Philadelphia City Councilman Curtis Jones, whose district includes East Falls, presented a citation from City Council that congratulated “the school’s continued commitment to progressive education to Philadelphia children and families.”

As you think about your time at Penn Charter, I am certain that you have incredible memories about the Red and Green Cubbies, growing chicks, and the fourth grade camping trip to College Settlement House in Lower School; Middle School intramurals, lockers, beginning band, and writing your Memoirs in eighth grade; and Phat-Physics, square dancing with your teachers on the senior retreat, PC-GA Day pep rallies, and Meetings for Worship in the Meeting Room, around campfires, and in alternative sites on campus.
You, as a class, also were situated right in the middle of a most memorable time in our school's history: the celebration of our 325th anniversary! As Head of School, I wanted to make this occasion memorable for you. As juniors, you took part in the all-school convocation, which included a parade of OPC's from the decades and special guests, speakers, and music. In addition, you were present at the nighttime all-school party, which featured a commissioned film about William Penn and the founding of your school, food-trucks, and a birthday cake made in the shape of the school buildingcomplete with a clock tower. The evening concluded with a fireworks celebration that lit the night skies over our beautiful campus. As seniors, you, the student leaders on campus, were present last fall at the historical marker dedication, which acknowledged the longtime contributions of Friends education and your school over many centuries.
Whether you are a lifer at Penn Charter or you joined this community just this past year, you have made many contributions to our school. Academically, athletically, in the arts, and through service, you have left your own mark on Penn Charter. For this, I am thankful to the Class of 2016. As you leave this friendly place, we wish you well and send you forth to live lives that make a difference.

This school challenges students in ways that sometimes we may not initially want to be challenged, but it’s all for the greater good.…The school that has always provided us the opportunity to thrive in all aspects of our lives, and has also provided us with a swift kick in the behind to get going when we weren’t. When thinking back on my time here, I can’t help but feel deep appreciation for all that this community as a whole has donenot only for me, but for the entire class of 2016 From our coaches who saw great potential and believed in us perhaps even before we believed in ourselves, to our teachers, who, despite our best efforts to ignore them, molded us into the success stories we are today, and finally to our classmates with whom we were thrown into the school and who have now become an amazing support system - John Mahoney

Living in the present doesn’t mean going around and being reckless, it means owning what you do because the kind of life you want to lead is determined by the choices you make Penn Charter has done a good job of trying to get us to be in the moment, to enjoy what it is we have while embracing the new opportunities and challenges coming our way.… Our many years at PC, colored by cherished memories, were preparing us for the future, and today we, the class of 2016, stand at the intersection of our present and our future All the memories we have made and shared as a class, all of our accomplishments and failures, all the people who have supported and encouraged us have led us to this moment, and now as we move forward, let our futures be demonstrative of all the work we have done and the work we are still doing.

Substitutes & Newbies:
We were grateful to have these good people fill in for teachers on maternity leave or sabbaticals this year: (pairs, top to bottom) Pat Bender, Gummere Library; Sarah Black, Lower School; Jill Bown, Lower School; Liz Jones, English; Kristen Ostendorf, Social Studies; Clancy Philbrick, Visual Arts; Chris Rahill OPC’99, English; (not pictured: Elizabeth Coco, Lower School); and we were fortunate to gain the services of retired Daily News sports journalist Ted Silary OPC’69 who brings his talents to the PC Sports Zone.

We very sincerely apologize for the following oversights: on page 13, we missed Kevin Gee in the back row of the Culinart team photo, standing between Barry and Freddy; for misspelling of Laura Riedlmeier’s name as Polo captain, and Jonathan Weiss’ name in his prophecy; there are some inadvertent listings of students out of order on the underclass pages due to a very annoying technical bug in the software we use
