“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves,
‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?’ Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you We are all meant to shine, as children do We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
- Marianne Williamson

Psalm 23
The students who graduated from Penn Charter in 2014 have come together for more than classes, teams, and school events. Those of us who have confronted the sudden loss of a parent or guardian found that the support of friends throughout the school community brought comfort, strength, and the courage to carry on. Such love breathes life into the psalmist’s words. Our classmates cherish the love that has made our years at PC so meaningful, and we wanted our yearbook to speak to the bonds between classmates and commemorate those who are unable to share graduation with us. We remember them, we give thanks for them, and we will carry them with us always. …

As we all move along and begin a new chapter of our lives, I encourage you not to wait until you are forced by tragedy to come together Choose to build relationships with others within your new community while simultaneously never forgetting the ones you have formed here So many times over the past few weeks I have heard my fellow seniors say “I wish I had gotten to know so and so better ” Continue to evolve as a person and further deepen the relationships made with your Penn Charter family Acknowledge and accept that next year will bring change, but it is up to you to own your experience. When you find yourself the new kid, as I was four years ago, reach out to those sitting across from you, even if they seem to be different. Forge connections with the ones around you-- make your own family, and make your new community fully yours. Stephanie Soroka

this symphony of seniors has faced a plethora of grave misfortunes during our years at Penn Charter: we have lost parents; we have lost siblings; and, most recently, we lost a graceful, influential, and unforgettable teacher, Ms Irving When her sudden passing was announced, some were silent, others cried hysterically, others were confused, stuck in a state of sudden shock, not knowing what to think Our class of seniors, who were fortunate enough to know Ms Irving for at least four years, were deeply affected by this loss We were unified in a sudden state of mourning, but somewhere, deep down, we found solace in our shared loss. We all sat in silence for a long while, feeling the heavy force of the moment on our hearts and minds, leaving us frozen in our benches. Then, miraculously, as the silence ended, we got up. Many embraced with the warmest hugs, tears in their eyes, and held hands. Only a miniscule fragment of the weight was lifted, but somewhere, inside, we all knew…Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da…Life goes on. Colin McCloskey

“Sunshine on a cloudy day” is how every student in the American Studies class would describe Mrs. Irving. From the second she walked into room 235, she instantly lit the whole place up. Her dislike of Wawa Iced Tea and cell phones, her love for Denzel and literature, and her passion for teaching changed the lives of each student in American Studies over this past year Mrs Irving will always be one of the toughest teachers we had during our school career, but also the best She challenged every one one of us because she believed in us and set high standards Conversations with Mrs. Irving could go on forever whether we were talking about a book, paper or just got side tracked. She worked with us individually so we could reach our goals and succeed. She had such passion for our class and we cannot be more grateful. Throughout this long American Studies journey we have grown as a family and Mrs. Irving is the heart of it. The image of her cocking her head and closing her eyes while she is thinking really hard will forever be embedded in our minds. This year every one of us grew as students but also as people, and that is because of Mrs. Irving. We will always love and miss Mrs. Irving, and she will always have a special place in our hearts. Colleen Clark and the American Studies class, May 2014

Turning the page into retirement are three stalwarts of the faculty who have meant so much to our school and whom we can not thank enough for all they have given us.

We apologize profusely to Chris Kurtz for unintentionally omitting his name in the list of Lifers on page 98 (although he is pictured), and are embarrassed to have omitted our outstanding Business Manager, Kidder Erdman, from the yearbook staff on page 2 Sorry, guys
We are also embarrassed to have mixed the names of Monique Durso and Sonja Duprez under each other’s photos on page 6
Harvey Rentschler has guided “Mr. R’s Superstars” through 38 years in the exciting fifth grade, and won 12 IAAA and 4 state championships in 30 years as Varsity Boys Cross Country coach Harvey is the definitive authority on the history of Track and Field.
Jean Taraborelli has been everyone’s favorite Spanish teacher for 24 years, and has brought extensive leadership to the Community Service programs She masterfully coordinated the Christmas gift drives for deserving families in North Philly Muchas Gracias y que Dios te bendiga
Whether teaching math, chairing the math department, or building the Math Center into an invaluable asset, Bob Gordon was for 27 years a sagacious mentor to many, especially when he “directed” Comedy Sportz Bob made sense of the toughest math for (ironically) innumerable students.

Also leaving PC in 2014 are (descending, from top row): Drew Jennings (Lower School); Sandrine Pal (French, Comedy Sportz); Candace LeClair (Lower School Arts); Hannah Jacoby-Rupp (Middle School Social Studies); Helen Scott Pritchett (Trask Library); Pat Bender (Interim Director of Libraries); and Ted Decker, OPC'78 (Director of Alumni Relations and Annual Fund); Bob Rowan, OPC’92, (bottom right) joined tech support in the Middle School after the book went to press.
For the last 38 years, one man has played an invaluable behind-the-scenes role in the production of our Class Record, the fellow who represented Jostens to PC and vice-versa Phil Klein is retiring after having served us (and many other schools) with distinction, patience, wisdom, kindness and generosity Phil eased us into the digital age of desktop publishing, and made it possible for PC to enjoy quality yearbooks and be on the leading edge of innovation year after year Though he might be recognizable to only a few in the school, Phil is always a welcomed presence in our halls, both for his work with the Class Record staff and as an evaluator of senior projects with his wife, Pat Our sincere thanks and appreciation go out to Phil as he looks forward to a well-earned retirement and time to spend with his bi-coastal family. Many thanks and Godspeed, good friend!

The spring play, East of the Sun and West of the Moon, adapted by Tina Howe, was a fresh rendition of a traditional Norwegian fairy tale. Featuring elements of classic stories such as Beauty and the Beast and Cinderella - think princeturned-bear and evil stepsisters - the play drew audience members from all ages. (To promote this family-friendly-ness, students in the show went to various Lower School classes and read the story aloud!) The cast and crew, which included students from grades 6 to 12, worked closely together for two months, and the final result brought to life a funny, magical world full of trolls and princesses, loneliness and greed, friendship and love.
