Class

of

Fred Huntington, more affectionately known as Teacher Fred, has dedicated over four decades of his life to William Penn Charter School as an enthusiastic mainstay of the English department. Outside of the school’s walls, Teacher Fred is a world traveler. He previously worked as a cab driver in New York City and was in the army He participated in a teacher exchange twice, traveling to England and immersing himself in English culture and literature. He is an avid reader, and enjoys the works of Irish poets.

Throughout his years Teacher Fred carried a “full load”, which entails teaching four classes throughout the year, reading at least two books simultaneously, and grading four sets of papers. His hard work extends beyond the classroom, and he frequently takes on new projects for the English department, such as the summer reading or revising the plagiarism code. Teacher Fred is very flexible regarding the curriculum and relishes the challenge of creating a new teaching plan While he welcomes new ideas to the English classes, Fred does not believe everything must be done in lock step and refuses to dilute the curriculum. He strikes a nice balance between being an individual and a conformist. Fred’s colleagues regard him as one of the nicest and most genuine gentlemen they know, cool in his own way.

Students will remember him as the passionate teacher who breathes life into the characters of the stories and has the best reading voice ever He will be remembered as a man who has a whimsical side in class, who clearly loves teaching, who treats everyone with respect and kindness, and who is respected and listened to in return.

Teacher Fred has always been more than just an English teacher. His extensive knowledge allowed him to be the guiding spirit of the school newspaper, The Mirror, overseeing many changes in design and technology. For a time, he also made sure Advanced Placement Exams ran smoothly. The PC community appreciates Fred’s profound comments in Meeting for Worship as inspirational reflections of a progressive and enlightened mind.

Veteran faculty will remember the ropes course Fred literally tied to the rafters of the old band room. Some may remember him as a squash player and coach, and the feature about his epic squash matches in The Mirror.

Teacher Fred has permanently influenced Penn Charter, and his inspiration and ideas will live on through his students. With great pleasure and respect, the Class of 2013 dedicates its Class Record to the admirable, unforgettable, and highly esteemed Teacher Fred Huntington.

In a cozy, ventilated Old Gym on a humid September evening, Upper School students celebrated their return to campus for the 2012-13 academic year with a sedate, civilized gathering to socialize and swap tales of summer fun With the soothing sounds of a string quartet, lemonade punch and homemade cookies, the faculty chaperones remarked that this was one of the most enjoyable ways to spend a Friday evening after a long week of grading early tests and papers. For one night, students were kids again, freed from the incessant grind of assignments, labs, and the cafeteria crunch.

Showcase 109

January 11th, 2013

Showcase is a student-run series of concerts throughout the year that invites dancers, bands, poets, singer/songwriters and comedians from within the Penn Charter student body to show up and perform for their peers. Ranging anywhere from an hour to three hours, students, parents, teachers, and friends pack the Kurtz Center lobby for generous amounts of free food before moving to Fitz’s room to see Penn Charter’s Performing Arts program come to life in an intimate-but-energetic, creative-but-relatable setting. Showcase is an event you do not want to miss.

The Showcase in January raised money for Ella DiGiovanni and RND.

Pep Rally

Preceding this year’s much anticipated PC/GA Day, the pep rally, cookout, and hot dog eating contest brought the community together with some fun competitions and traditions

Beginning with the cookout, $5 gave students unlimited hot dogs, soft pretzels, bottled water, and admission to the annual hot dog eating contest Big crowds of students gathered outside of the field house to witness some of the schools’ most talented carnivores. The

senior contestants wolfed down the most dogs, waddling away with the competition The lunch was fun for all, except perhaps those who ate a few too many weiners. Later that afternoon, the pep rally began with the help of seniors Brandon White and Eric Berger These MCs energized the crowd in some new and upbeat cheers, and the teams’ videos were entertaining and helped pump up the school for PC/GA Day. The pep rally closed with a dodge ball game,

which involved the captains versus an ersatz “GA” team (some brave PC teachers) The PC captains’ team defeated the imposters to the delight of the crowd. The spirited week of dress code permutations culminated with this fun-filled afternoon and was a great way to excite everyone for PC/GA Day Many thanks to those who helped out in planning a successful cookout and pep rally!

PC/GA Day 126

This year marked the 126th PC/GA Day, and another overall win for PC. Though the day started out somewhat gloomy, our teams were able to overcome the foreign GA environment and contribute to the capture of the Competition Cup. Two victories this year were especially crucial: golf, a sport which competed for the first time in PC/GA Day, and tennis, beating GA for the first time in 5 years GA’s new, centrally located athletic fields helped many spectators see a variety of games and get a good workout walking from the parking lots Though the GA fans were boisterous, the Penn Charter spectators seemed to outnumber them on their own turf and brought a thunderous roar regardless of the score Big wins by Boys Water Polo, with Dave Huber’s MVP performance; Tennis, with clutch play by Margaux Losty; Boys Soccer, led by second-year MVP Teddy Foley; the earlier Golf match; along with a gut-wrenching scoreless tie in Girls Soccer; set up the Football game as the determining factor Led by seniors Mark Opaliski, Daryl Worley and Geis Trophy winners Eric Neefe and Mike McGlinchey, the Quakers advanced our gridiron domination to 82-33-11 in the nation’s oldest, continuous scholastic rivalry.

SEMI

The Upper School kicked-off the second trimester with the Winter Dance, more commonly known as “Semi,” starting promptly at 7:30 pm in the Old Gym despite a slight threat of bad weather. Potential rain kindly waited until the dance was over, a very good break for the girls in semi-formal dresses of varying colors, who were glad the evening was not too cold Most of the boys looked almost elegant, arriving in dress shirts, ties and even some suits Underclassmen and guests from other schools helped make the turnout one of the best in years; overall everyone seemed to have fun at the dance The seniors, enjoying their last Winter Dance at PC, seemed to make the most of evening and remained energetic and enthusiastic throughout the night, setting high standards of decorum. The expected (some say traditional) shortage of water bottles did not disappoint: there was no water to be found by the end of the dance The DJ played the classics, from Taylor Swift to The Temptation’s Shout, and students and teachers alike enjoyed the night

The Election of 2012

as seen through the lenses at PC

The Great Debate (Lincoln/Douglas it wasn’ t)

Sponsored by AP Government & Politics, Penn Charter Young Democrats and Penn Charter Young Republicans

Panelists wait their turn at the mic in rapt concentration (above); Liberal positions were somberly presented by Rachel and Stanton (left, of course), while Rightwingers Alex and Julia took a more casual approach Then Sam and Ed switched gears (below).

Social Studies classes in all divisions led students and teachers through the murky political waters of the hotly contested 2012 campaign to explore the issues and candidates and take the proverbial political pulse of the school. These events did not just raise awareness of the long-term implications of policies or provide venues for partisan bickering; debates and mock elections gave students a taste of making their voices heard and votes count. And we had a bit of fun along the way.

After the indoctrination ... uh, the debate, The Mirror conducted its own online poll:

The school overwhelmingly re-elected President Obama...

... thanks to winning the female vote...

In grades six through eight, plus faculty, 236 votes were cast:

208 votes for Obama (88.1%)

28 votes for Romney (11.9%) (and Fio demanded a re-count)

... with faculty a bit to the left of the students.

The Mirror received 389 responses from 68 freshmen (17% of responses), 68 sophomores (17%), 65 juniors (16.5%), 81 seniors (22%), 15 staff members (4%), and 92 faculty members (24%)

(After the debate, all the participants were given detentions for being out of dress code.)

February 22-24, 2013

The all-star cast of Seussical the Musical blew the audience away with their sheer talent and comedic charm The show, directed by Michael Roche, was the second All-School Musical performed in the Kurtz Center for the Performing Arts. With over 100 students in the cast, crew and pit orchestra, ranging from 4th to 12th grade, and only 11 weeks to rehearse, the musical came together gracefully and successfully thanks to immense preparation and dedication The show was a curtain call for theatrical seniors (on stage, backstage and below): Stephanie Risler, Ashleigh Brown, Amanda Ashbaker, Sapphire Johnson, Nicholas Hanson, Quinton Laurencio, Jessica Star, Marlaina Stuve, Lital Netter-Sweet, Emma Higgins, Kira Hastings, Tara Malone, Angi Ji, Ben Rubin, Dan Amchin, Andrew Uhlmann, Mary Cain, Jim Getsy, Kendall Moore, and Michael Paolini

With characters such as the Cat in the Hat and Horton the Elephant, as well as songs like “Green Eggs and Ham,” “Oh, The Thinks you Can Think!” and “Solla Sollew,” the countless allusions to Doctor Seuss’ stories made children and adults in the audience smile The show had a lasting impression on all who attended and set the bar very high for future musicals at Penn Charter

The 2012 Boys Cross Country team had a very successful season In early September, the Quakers placed 1st at the XC4 Invitational and 1st out of 18 teams in the prestigious Briarwood Invitational. PC also dominated the 60th Annual George School Invitational with first place finishes in both the varsity and junior varsity categories. The Quakers claimed 2nd place at the Paul Short Run, a race with almost 400 competitors. The Quakers defeated every InterAc opponent but GA in head-to-head meets. To finish out the official season, the team took 2nd place at the InterAc Championships on Belmont Plateau and also 2nd place at the Pennsylvania Independent School State Championships in Philly The All-InterAc selections of Ben Szuhaj, Scott Mason, and ET Dumas also placed well in the All-State rankings Mason won the junior non-seeded race, and Ben and ET placed well in the seeded race against the top competition at the Northeastern Regional Foot Locker Race in New York. Final Record: 113 wins, 6 losses.

As are the hills of Belmont Plateau, so went the girls cross-country team: a year of ups and downs. With the freshman class growing into true runners, it is clear that they will continue the legacy of PCXC: hard-workers and belly-laughers. Freshmen McKenna Krall, Emily Smith, Alyssa Farrell, Karly McCloskey, Kolby Kaller, McKenzie Case, and Sarah Fleming were always smiling throughout practices

The sophomores were also a group of dedicated runners who made major improvements from last season Maya “Lets Do Core” Pressley and Sophie “Shoes Optional” Sepel always seemed to be doing extra workouts Lela Lerner, Leah Kurtz, and Imani Stone infected the team with laughter. Sarah Duys and Sarah Jobes, affectionately dubbed “Sarah2,”were the first pair to run as if joined in a three legged race. Sara Habbash was an enthusiastic manager

Juniors Lydia Milano, Julia Fleming, and Glynis Braun, brought the team their infectious smiles and spirit to both practices and races

Each of the twelve seniors brought their special personalities and spirit to the team Catie Skinner won the PAISAA and InterAc Championships, and Ella DiGiovanni was team captain and manager Kira Hastings led the team with her dedication and as the only runner who actually stretched, while Emily Diaz led through her spirit day attire Olivia Roak, Julia Vahey, and Caitlyn Farrell, despite injuries, were PCXC’s #1 fans on race days Marlaina Stuve, LitalNetter Sweet, Ani Schug, Rachael Morris, and Heidi Zisselman all contributed in their love for running, encouragement, and exuberance.

The football team, led by senior captains Mike McGlinchey and Daryl Worley, finished the season with a record of 5-4 The Quakers started the season strong with a 3-1 non-league record, including an impressive 13-0 win over McDonogh, a top-ranked team in Maryland. Unfortunately due to a few setbacks and key injuries, PC lost three straight games to open up league play The Quakers then bounced back with dominating wins over Springside Chestnut Hill and arch-rival Germantown Academy to finish off the season

Sophomore quarterback Patrick McCain had a smooth transition to starting quarterback with great coaching and an experienced team around him Senior Daryl Worley was quite the target for McCain, as the two hooked up for almost 500 yards

The team graduates a great group of seniors, who throughout the season provided leadership to an otherwise young team Mark Opaliski was a fantastic blocker on offense and a fierce tackler on defense, while Zander Chovanes was finally able to emerge from the league’s veil of ineligibilty Tyler Gottlieb was a critical addition to the team as placekicker, while Bennett Samuel started as a tight end and defensive end Dan Foley played large during PC/GA Day, Kyle Drayton was a lockdown in the secondary, and Brandon White was the the special teams’ specialist, and Kevin Murphy finished the season strong as a receiver and defensive back Terrance Collins contributed on D with key stops

The energy of the student body and the team’s execution inspired the 35-7 victory on PC/GA day The Geis Trophy, awarded to the MVP of the PC/GA football game, was shared by senior running back Eric Neefe, who had an impressive 1000+ yard season, and senior lineman/tight end/fullback Mike McGlinchey.

This year field hockey had an entirely new coaching staff They were energetic and proved to be ready to take on the task of a tough league schedule. At the beginning of preseason, it was clear that there was a lot of work to be done with a young team with a core of experienced seniors but no juniors. Nevertheless, everyone was committed to improving their skills and in short order came together as a unit The sophomore class truly stepped up, filling the gaps and learning quickly The season started off well with some big non-league wins against Lawrenceville and Shipley, showing that the Quakers were a force to be reckoned with. Numerous injuries presented setbacks for a tough league schedule, but PC fought hard in each contest. Besides an awesome win against GA in the first showing, some team highlights include a pumpkin carving contest and the trip to “Terror Behind the Walls” at the Eastern State Penitentiary Although the Quakers ended the season with a record of 10-10-1, everyone felt as though it was a successful and memorable season, with a lot to look forward to

The Varsity Soccer season jumped off to a quick start with four games against top-ranked teams in the country The team bonded during a weekend trip to Washington D.C. and competed against notable opponents, including co-national champion DeMatha Catholic High School and Gonzaga College High School Soon after, the Quakers traveled to north Jersey to compete against co-national champion St Benedict’s and #17 ranked Chaminade After a tough game against St Benedict’s, PC responded with a momentous victory against Chaminade, coming back from a 3-1 deficit to win in overtime 4-3

The next five matches saw the Quakers’ post a 4-0-1 mark before opening up InterAc play with a victory over Episcopal Academy, 1-0. PC finished with a 6-3-1 record in the InterAc league, good for 2nd place behind Haverford School Notable wins include a thrashing of Malvern Prep at St Joseph’s University and defeating Episcopal Academy twice in one season for the first time in years Senior goalkeeper Drew Paisley stepped up multiple times during the season, posting four shutouts, and even saved a key penalty kick against Haverford’s top striker

The Quakers capped off the season with a goal by senior captain Ted Foley to seal a 1-0 victory against rival Germantown Academy in the 126th PC/GA Day, helping to bring the Competition Cup back to Penn Charter Seniors Zach Weinberg and Sam Agre held down the defense, while injured captain Josh Cannon supported his team from the sidelines Though the talented seniors will graduate, the returning talent promises to keep PC Soccer competitive in the InterAc next year and beyond

This season the Girls Soccer team chalked up the best InterAc record they have recorded in many years and made it to the PAISAA Finals, although they lost in an exciting game

Key saves by “rookie” goalie, senior Ashleigh Brown, were among the highlights of a stellar season. The other seniors also helped lead a strong and talented team by example. Emma Ebert was a steady defender, and her corner kicks were perfectly placed to give junior Lauren Dimes and freshman Jlon Flippins scoring opportunities Senior Kelly Kubach consistently helped the team get on the scoreboard with her multiple assists Julia Mammone’s versatility from defense to midfield during the season and constant hustle were critical The team also loved the support of junior Julianna Casasanto, who was severely injured during the PC/GA Day game, but provided vocal support during the state tournament. Fellow junior Steph Soroka’s determination in games even when PC was down (which did not happen often), kept the team focused and oriented.

The Quakers’ achievements are also due to coaches who know the game, and their team members, very well, and to valuable role players such as Kristina Kubach, Leigh Steinberg and Maddie Mahoney The success of the team was largely due to a strong starting line up and hard working subs that kept the games running smoothly

Boys Water Polo ended a great season with an InterAc title. The squad posted a record of 24 -4 on the year, while being undefeated in the InterAc. Senior captains David Huber and Mike Lordi led an attack of four returning starters. Mike had shut down D playing in the set position Dave Huber was a huge threat in the whole, while Connor McGoldrick sniped at the corners from the weak side Junior Pierce Kraft really stepped up this year and was a major contributor Senior Jamal Willis won countless swim-offs, while Ross Wood grew into a silent assassin The team contributed five players to the InterAc team (Huber, Lordi, McGoldrick, Kraft, Christoph). Although the team is losing six seniors, there is confidence that PC Polo will come back for a “three-peat."

Girls Water Polo

Hennessey; back row: Laura Riedlmeier, Tyler Williams, Amanda Beck, Nicolette Napoleon, Jean Gleason

The Girls Water Polo team had a successful season with the help of new head coach Laura Hennessey. The girls’ best game was the amazing comeback of five goals to beat the Hill School. The Quakers finished fourth at Easterns and had a great finish at Beast of the East and the Upper Merion Tournaments as well Assistant coaches Dan and Christina added lots of energy to the program and helped the team develop Overall, the thirteen girls on the team formed friendships and grew throughout the season.

Eighth grader Emily Zurcher improved considerably throughout the season with her strong left arm Freshmen Pam Gonzalez, Laura Riedlmeier, and Jean Gleason all joined the team and learned quickly from the upperclassmen Sophomore Nicole Cousonis was the most improved player, and became a solid, key starter Fellow sophomore Tyler Williams brought tons of energy and laughter, while Nicolette Napoleon stepped up as goalie and fought through her injury Juniors Amanda Beck, Anna Ten Have, and Cherie Doan set an example of dedication, willing to show their goofy side.

The seniors led the team with organizing team bonding activities such as the sleepover, tye-dying, team breakfasts, and spirit days Carly Zurcher was the lead goal scorer of the season and lent her outside knowledge of the sport and sense of humor to her teammates Meredith Wurtz was the fastest swimmer who helped the team by winning nearly all of her swim-offs. PC golf, captained by seniors Luke Angelakis, Andrew Glatz, and Erin Lo, played during the 2012 season in its second year as a fall sport This was also the first year golf counted toward the PC/GA Day Competition Cup. The match was played on the Tuesday before the actual PC/ GA Day, and the team provided a critical point for the PC cup-capturing total

Freshmen Cesar Centeno, Henry Centeno, and Paul Glatz improved during the season to help the team’s total. Sophomores Hunter Gates and Christian Teuber brought the laughter and fun to the courses as their scores steadily lowered with each match. Fellow sophomores J.B. Bradbeer and Owen Davis were silent leaders through their dedication and low scores Unfortunately, J B ’s scores were not allowed to be counted as part of league rules, but he will be vital in the scoring next fall.

Senior Luke Angelakis finished 23rd in the league, with two rounds of 39, and helped keep the team focused Andrew Glatz, always focused on the team first, finished 16th in the InterAc, and his consistent scores were comforting for the team Erin Lo, the only girl in the InterAc, finished 14th in the league overall and had the low score at PC’s home course, Huntingdon Valley, shooting a 37.

The Quakers finished fifth out of six in the league Penn Charter finished fourth twice, fifth three times, and sixth once during the league matches.

Junior Margaux Losty stepped up to first singles, and her relentless play in matches inspired everyone. Senior Ali Borowsky debuted on varsity in singles, bringing her versatility as a team player Sophomore Emily Barkann jumped from doubles to singles and shocked her opponents with her powerful shots Co-captains and seniors Ryann Shaffer and Erin Lo made a strong first doubles team, combining their skill, spirit, and brains to have an almost undefeated season Sophomore Rebecca John and freshman Paige Hodges formed an consistent and aggressive second doubles team Senior Carly Stern and junior Liza Gendler reunited as a doubles team, and brought the laughter to the courts. Seniors Jessica Drossner and Michelle Gross made a strong, consistent, and victorious fourth doubles that produced results when the team needed it the most. Coach Rose Weinstein was the rock behind the team, giving advice when necessary and in general leading the team with her veteran knowledge. Assistant Coach Chris Spencer was always willing to help the girls with their mechanics and their serves

Although the Quakers lost to GA during the league match, 2-5, the girls came back with a vengeance to upset GA during PC/GA day with a 4-3 win with all four wins going third sets and being the last to finish. Ryann and Erin beat their opponents for the first time Rebecca and Paige won in a tie breaker to decide the victors Freshman Danielle Yampolsky returned from her injury to win at first singles and Margaux was MVP for the day

Junior Demetrius Issac was a leader in the backcourt and took over the first game against GA. Sophomore Chase Kumor really stepped it up this year and was another essential piece in the team’s success Coming off the bench was senior Austin Williams who brought athleticism and was called in for rebounds, blocks, and put-backs Also coming off the bench was junior Alex Schwarz, who was always in the right spot for the perfect shot. The Quakers have tremendous upside in the next year with three returning starters, plus Anthony Campanile and Schwarz stepping in to fill out the lineup. It was an exciting season overall, and the whole team played with heart. Big shout out to the Quaker Crew, cheering the team on throughout the season!

All-InterAc, Honorable Mention: Hannah Fox

Girls Basketball

The Girls Basketball team had an interesting season, to say the least. With many great new additions and returning players and coaches, the team had a fine mix of young and old Led by Coach Dave Bass in his second season at the helm, the team was always laughing at his jokes or “Gangnam Style” moves. His energy and high expectations led to hard practices and a competitive schedule. The team also appreciated the positive encouragement and help from coaches Natasha, Jim, Julie, and Shannon, whose great conditioning drills and sense of humor kept everyone on their toes.

Led by captains Nicole Weitz and Katie O’Malley, the Quakers finished their season strong Senior Day was a great tribute to the three seniors: Nicole, Katie, and Kelly Kubach. After missing last season, Kelly returned this year as a starter and energized the team with her competitive attitude Juniors Kristina Kubach and Carmela Dow were great guards, and Kristina’s and Kelly’s hard work on defense was a great match for guarding some of the league’s best shooters Sophomores Nicolette Napoleon and Caroline Jones worked hard in the post and learned to play tough Jess Soens also improved her shot tremendously and will be a major threat in the future. The freshmen on the team contributed a great amount of energy and love for the game Hannah Fox and Ayanna Matthews, who played as eighth graders last year, stepped up as the team’s main ball handlers and scorers. Newcomers Eileen Hennessy and Taylor Zahairagunn were great rebounders and aggressive players, always ready to contribute The Quakers were beset by many injuries, but they were still able to win the Germantown Friends Tournament and compete with some of the Top-Ten ranked teams in the state

The Boys Varsity Squash team performed to a high standard of play throughout the season. Led by five seniors, the team won the Middle Atlantic consolation and the sportsmanship award. The team fought hard in a very difficult division, ending up in fourth place. Our key victory came when we defeated Harriton Lower Merion in a close match, 5-4 Other close and good matches included GFS and St Andrews

The five seniors were key to the team’s successful year and will surely be missed next year Randy Beck, Luke Angelakis and Max Reiff were recognized for their excellent play with All-InterAc honors. August Crofton and Scott Marcus won key games in numerous close matches. Although High School Nationals was cancelled due to weather, the team was peaking at the right time and was primed for success

The Girls Varsity Squash team had a very fun season. Although the overall the record was not the same as it had been in previous years, the season ended up being very successful with every girl working hard and playing to the best of their ability Many underclassmen tried out for the team and gained experience with the sport which will be great for the program in the years to come.

Led by senior co-captains Emma Ebert and Ryann Shaffer, the Quakers met their goals by the end of the season; they kept the team positive and energetic Sophomore Izzy Hirshberg and junior Margaux Losty were key members of the team, playing the top positions on the ladder. Alongside Izzy and Margaux, Danielle Reisley and Leigh Steinberg kept momentum throughout the entire season, finishing with key wins in close matches

Coached superbly by Damon Leedale-Brown and Rose Weinstein, the Quakers improved greatly throughout the few months of the season. Coach Damon made sure that each player felt confident enough to challenge their opponents. Assistant Coach Rose was great in organizing the team and helping with all the gear and uniforms

The season went well with Paul Coleman stepping in as the new Boys Varsity Swimming coach. Everyone gave it their all each time they swam and the end result was positive Beating the Hill School and Episcopal Academy were two big, close wins for the Quakers, despite unusual circumstances On the way to Episcopal, the bus got stuck in some mud and the team was stranded for about two hours The Hill School meet was not quite as dramatic, but the majority of the team was sick in the days leading up to the meet, and the team was still missing a few swimmers the day of the meet. The Quakers worked together and ultimately succeeded

The team finished the season with InterAc Champs and Easterns, where they had much success at both championship meets, breaking school records and setting personal best times. Altogether the swim season was a success

Senior Jamal Willis broke his the record for the 50 freestyle several times, with his personal best being at Easterns with 20 81 seconds Sophomore Ross Wood broke the PC record for the 500 free (4:43 24) at Easterns, and junior Connor McGoldrick broke the 100 fly record (52:02)

Throughout this season, the Girls Varsity Swimming and Diving team had a great season As a close knit group, they worked hard in the pool and pulled out a winning season! One highlight of the season was our meet against Hill. We came in as underdogs and ended up dropping huge amounts of time and winning by 11 points. The team was led by seniors Maria Georgiou, Meredith Wurtz, and Carly Zurcher Maria dominated the 200 IM while Carly got her personal best in the 100 free at Easterns, which led the 400 free relay to a top 5 time in PC history Meredith Wurtz played “mom” to the team. Juniors Amanda Beck, Glynis Braun, Cheri Doan, and Anna Ten Have all contributed to the team’s success. Sophomores Maddie Mahoney, Sabrina Koenig, and Nicole Cousounis always made the team laugh and came up with great dance moves Freshman Pam Gonzales, Caitlin McLafferty, and Liz Cowhey were great additions to the team as well! It was such a fun season and the team should continue its success next year!

The team also enjoyed Glynis’ baking and had fun together, with some shenanigans at other teams’ expense. The Quakers also learned to apply eyebrow gel, but only to get freaky.

Coming into the season the Varsity Wrestling team did not have a coach and the season did not look bright. However, the wrestlers were lucky enough to have Coach David Priest come on board. From day one each and every one of the them got tougher and had fun doing it. The Quakers’ league record improved to 1-4 and with an overall record of 6-5.

The team had its biggest success at the Valley Forge Invitational with one first place finish (senior Eric Berger, Most Valuable Wrestler), three second place finishes (seniors Etienne Dumas, Taylor Jobes, and Alex Magers), and one third place finish (senior Mark Opaliski). Opaliski came into the season as a first year wrestler and improved tremendously in every match. He ended his solo career with an impressive 8th place finish at the state tournament Although the Quakers were mostly made up of seniors, the underclassmen who return have a lot of potential Led by sophomore Jelani Buie, who placed seventh at the state tournament, the team has a very bright future, and Penn Charter Wrestling will return to its true form

Mock Trial

Mock Trial draws from students in grades 9 through 12 and meets twice weekly. The group is divided into two teams, Team A named “Team Paradox” and Team B named “Team Tom.” Each year the club is presented with a case which they must argue for both the prosecution and the defense At press time, Mock Trial is waiting to find out if they will advance to the fourth round of the current trial..

Writing Center Peer Tutors

The Writing Center’s warm and inviting environment are reasons why students in the Middle, and Upper School come to get assistance on writing assignments Some peer tutors enjoy the work so much that they go above the required 40-minutes per week Peer tutors enjoy assisting others, whether it’s a friend or the occasional, nervous, Middle School student The Writing Center is a treasured room at school and always is the perfect place to work on homework or lounge on the comfy couch!

GSA

The GSA meets on Fridays Discussions range from school-related issues, such as bullying, to country-wide problems, especially regarding the recent election. Usually any LGBT-related topics in the news are discussion topics. Besides discussions, the GSA watches videos, dances, and occasionally hosts assemblies in order to increase awareness in the Upper School.

RLC

The Religious Life Committee is charged with supporting and deepening Quakerism in the Upper School. Not just a club, but a committee, it provides students an opportunity to make substantive contributions to our community, including Meeting for Worship and Friends-Multicultural Day. The RLC sets their own agenda each year, with the goal of finding ways to better our understanding of Quakerism and to contribute to the ongoing revelation of what it means for Penn Charter to be a Quaker school.

Current Events Club

The Current Events Club meets every Wednesday during lunch, to engage a diverse student body with different biases, political ideas and cultural perspectives Topics are both domestic and foreign Prominent topics of discussion this year were: gun control, the Benghazi attack, Lance Armstrong, and CIA Director David Petraeus, to name a few.

Science Peer Tutors

As a relatively new group, the Science Peer Tutors are a student-run resource for those searching for help in the sciences. The Science Peer Tutors often hold large study sessions before major tests and final exams, and always are willing to help students who either struggle with science or need a little extra assistance on a confusing topic, regardless of how trivial the subject or work may seem.

Jazz Band

It was a great year for the performing arts and small ensembles at PC The one year-old Performing Arts Council, run by students, has organized and sponsored various successful events, such as Improv Night and a Performing Arts Panel to heighten arts awareness and appreciation on campus. Small ensemble musical groups meet a few times a week in the Kurtz Center. Quakers Dozen, a co-ed a Cappella group, performed both on and off campus and even graced the hallways with carols over the holidays Groups like Boys a Cappella and Girls a Cappella grew in size and repertoire this year, with music ranging from Beyonce to Doo-wop Groups like Jazz Band, String Ensemble, and Flute by the Foot give students instrumental opportunities beyond Symphonic Band Members of the all flute ensemble, Flute by the Foot, always spice up concerts with their colorful socks while playing. With the Performing Arts Council’s emergence and students’ dedication to and passion for music, the arts remain a strength of the Penn Charter experience.

Although council meetings are open to all, there are 20 elected student representatives (five freshmen, five sophomores, five juniors, and five seniors)

Service Council

Service Council organizes all community service opportunities for the Upper School Weekly projects include serving at St Francis Soup Kitchen, as well as tutoring at Casa del Carmen and the Kroc Center. The council also encourages student participation in other projects with students from the Saint James School, Visioning the Good Society program, and the holiday gift drive.

Community Council

Along with faculty members Brian McCloskey, Beth Glascott, Tim Lynch, Sarah Sharp and Lee Payton, the Council hears cases regarding infractions of the Community Code and recommends possible sanctions to the Upper School administration.

To the Class of 2013:

I congratulate you on the achievement of producing a stellar Class Record Your yearbook not only chronicles your success while at Penn Charter but also captures your school at a very special time in our history, as we think strategically about our future. Consistent with your theme, you, the Class of 2013, are known for your variety and have always given us a little something extra – like a baker’s dozen of doughnuts You are caring, and many of you have always been more than a little committed to service. You are athletic, and many of you have always given a little bit more of yourselves in the big game You are artistic, and many of you have given your best performances on stage, and at times, in class! You are a little bit louder but not at the expense of sportsmanship You are a little bit more “type A” about grades but not at the expense of learning. You are a little bit more opinionated but not at the expense of empathy. Just as some have turned the number 13 into a lucky charm, I am certain that you will be lucky in life. More important than luck, however, I am certain you will find success and happiness and make your mark as you make a positive difference to improve our world Congratulations to you all, fondly remember Old Penn Charter, and take that little extra piece of us with you as you pass through our storied red doors upon your commencement

I couldn’t pick the right pictures to add of my parents because it is not that easy to find one that portrays the appreciation, love, and feelings I have for them both. Therefore, I want to dedicate this page to them. To my mom, because there is not anything in the world that shows the same affection that she gives to me. I am proud to call myself a “mama’s boy” because I know I would not be here without her To my dad, because of all the long soccer trips up and down the east coast our bond has been so strong and because you will not be taking me to my sporting events in college I do not want you to feel that the bond will fade. “Then what’s happened to the missiles?” he said.

A new and astounding image appeared in the mirrors

“They would appear,” said Ford doubtfully, “to have turned into a bowl of petunias and a very surprised-looking whale ”

Another thing that got forgotten was the fact that against all probability, a sperm whale had suddenly been called into existence several miles above the surface of an alien planet.

And since this is not a naturally tenable position for a whale, this poor innocent creature had very little time to come to terms with its identity as a whale before it then had to come to terms with not being a whale any more

This is a complete record of its thought from the moment it began its life till the moment it ended it

Ah ! What's happening? it thought

Er, excuse me, who am I?

Hello?

Why am I here? What's my purpose in life?

What do I mean by who am I?

Calm down, get a grip now oh! this is an interesting sensation, what is it? It’s a sort of yawning, tingling sensation in my my well, I suppose I’d better start finding names for things if I want to make any headway in what for the sake of what I shall call an argument I shall call the world, so let's call it my stomach.

Good. Ooooh, it's getting quite strong. And hey, what about this whistling, roaring sound going past what I'm suddenly going to call my head? Perhaps I can call that . . . wind! Is that a good name? It’ll do . . . perhaps I can find a better name for it later, when I find out what it’s for. It must be something very important, because there certainly seems to be a hell of a lot of it Hey! What’s this thing? This let’s call it a tail--yeah, tail Hey! I can really thrash it about pretty good, can’t I? Wow! Wow! That feels great! Doesn’t seem to achieve very much, but I'll probably find out what it’s for later on Now, have I built up any coherent picture of things yet?

No.

Never mind, hey, this is really exciting, so much to find out about, so much to look forward to, I'm quite dizzy with anticipation . . . Or is it the wind?

There really is a lot of that now, isn’t there?

And wow! Hey! What’s this thing suddenly coming toward me very fast? Very, very fast So big and flat and round, it needs a big wide-sounding name like . . . ow . . . ound . . . round . . . ground! That’s it! That’s a good name-ground!

I wonder if it will be friends with me?

As I reflect on my experiences at Penn Charter, starting as that crazy caped crusader to now, I am struck by the importance of community in my life Although the academics were always my top priority, being part of the community was equally as valuable. I will miss this community and I will soon become a part of a new one Luckily this time, I won’t need my cape - David

Report cards and resumes do not define a Penn Charter student

Rather, our values and relationships define our time here We are not just taught how to be good students but also how to be respectful and engaged community members Being a valuable community member is not an inherent quality but one we must strive for, as we constantly seek to improve ourselves and also bring out the best in those around us - Ani Schug

PC’s 2013 baseball season was off to an enjoyable start - how could it not, playing well against good teams in Clearwater, FL? Unfortunately, the Quakers had to fly home to the cold north, where the reception in the InterAc was just as chilly Solid wins against good teams, both on the trip and at home, plus some rare scoreless ties against Catholic League schools, gave the Quakers the confidence that they belonged on the field with anyone. With the exception of Malvern, PC played tough against every InterAc team, earning big wins against GA and Episcopal Unfortunately, inexperience and a lack of pitching depth caught up with the Quakers over time, leaving a disappointing end to what otherwise was a fun season, notable for the growth in some Key senior leadership came from Ted Foley, Greg Nazarian, and Drew Paisley; much is expected in 2014 from returning veterans Jordan DellaValle, Steve Cohen (.361), Demetrius Isaac, Brian Luxton, TJ Pagan, Zach Wielgus (most innnings pitched, most strikeouts), Kenny Bergmann leader in hits and RBI), and Zach Kurtz. Continued growth by Nolan Jones, Harrison Timberlake, Joey Lancellotti, Dillon Malandro, Gabe Smith and Eric Stahlheber will allow PC to contend next year

The PC Varsity Softball team had a very successful and exciting season. Finishing first in the InterAc, the team’s record (11-1) speaks for itself. With the addition of five new freshmen, the girls were stronger than ever Of course the four seniors, Nicole Weitz, Molly Mornhinweg and captains Rachael Garnick and Jessica Drossner, did a great job at leading the team all season long The spring break trip to Myrtle Beach brought the girls together and promoted team unity, a leading factor and key team goal throughout a tremendous season. With “Doc”, Aaron, and “KWack” coaching this team, nothing was impossible “You haven’t won anything yet” motivated every single player to do their best and stay focused on the title Great offensive production from Nikki ( 410, 3HR, 35RBI), Molly (.362, 2HR, 23RBI), Eileen (.391, 1HR, 20RBI), and Kayla (.381, 13BB, 11RBI); stellar defense from Devon, Nik and Nic, Rach, Eileen, Ayanna (9-3 to save perfection), Jess, Molly and Kristina; superb baserunning by Zoë, Kelsey and Marissa (once); all complemented the unstoppable pitching of Jess (8-1, 2 00ERA) and Kayla (3-0, 0 00ERA) and gave us the championship formula Overall, the softball team did a great job this season, and the credit goes to each and every girl on that team.

5- The “destiny” incident (or was it “intensity”?)

As physically demanding as Crew is, the 2013 PC boys season demonstrated the mental toughness demanded by the sport as well. As one senior said, “People can learn the stroke in 10 minutes, but it takes a lifetime to perfect it ” Every member of the PC Crew made strides toward perfecting their craft this year Of course, not all of the hard work was on the river; in preparing to place ourselves in the boats and on the water, some odd conversations took place on the dock that inspired deep thinking. Once out on the water, everyone put their minds, hearts, backs, legs and arms into improving their boats’ times, with stellar results The varsity doubles of Grant and Kelly (flexing, left) earned second place at Stotesbury and third at Nationals; the varsity quad (Jolinger, Point, Young, Delaney) made semis at Stotesbury; JV doubles (Grugan, Foley) earned at least one semi-final place; and the novice single (McDavid) took second in the City Champs. Each year PC Crew grows better; this was a year of major strides.

The 2013 season was filled with intense practices and many extra hours spent together as a team. Spring break was challenging due to the wicked weather and changes in the line-up, but as we progressed together we saw many improvements The Manny Flick regattas were showcases for our team’s skills as they won many preliminaries and placed well overall: varsity double (Georgiou and Zisselman); gig single (Gleason); the JV doubles. The varsity quad adapted to different combinations of rowers during the season, and lightweight doubles (Gendler, Pogrebivsly) made major improvements. As the competition became tougher throughout the season, we continued to improve in both technique and power Our team bonded through 4 by 2ks, and rainy practices, and we never once gave up on each other. Even with the drama on the dock, each member of the team became stronger and closer to one another.

Penn Charter lacrosse had a roller coaster of a 2013 season After starting off with three tough losses to some of America’s top competition, the Quakers went to D C over spring break and showed the country that Penn Charter was a force to be reckoned with. Criticized for being too young of a team, the Quakers responded by knocking off two top-25-ranked teams over the course of three days and continuing on to an eight game win streak. At the apex of the Quakers’ season they were nationally recognized as the 25th best team in the country Penn Charter faced a perennially difficult InterAc schedule that included some of high school lacrosse’s biggest names Although the Quakers only went 3-7 in the league, they refused to roll over The season ended at Lawrenceville in the quarterfinals of the InterAc tournament where even a herculean performance by senior Raymond Vandegrift could not lead the Quakers to victory Penn Charter is a young and vivacious squad who will be returning the majority of the team, including standout goalie Sean McKee. Coach McDonough and the rest of the team are excited for what the 2014 season has in store and hope to build on 2013’s success.

The 2013 PC girls lacrosse season was one of hard work and grit After a rough few weeks of preseason and a challenging trip to Virginia and DC (including numerous “Manchester” tests), our team was off to a promising start with a nearly undefeated record. Once the Quakers started the InterAc games, the team lost some steam that they couldn’t seem to regain. Despite our overall record, the Quakers were a close knit group with many determined players who never lost focus. Our goal at the beginning of the season was to win the InterAc title, and we fought game by game even when our prospects grew slimmer. The 2013 experience was one of learning and growing in times of disappointment, but rejoicing in the mutual effort brought by every single member of the team

The 2013 Girls Track season can be called a season of improvement. The majority of the team improved their personal records from the start of the season to the end in their respective events. In fact, every single girl on the distance team improved her 800 meter times. Despite charismatic leadership from coach Flemming the Quakers took fourth place at Champs. Senior leadership was vital to the Quakers: Catie Skinner was the unanimous MVP and was lethal at long distance, and Tara Murphy was the fastest 100 and 200 meter runner on the team Our greatest strength was provided by the field events, with many points won due to great depth. Although the girls hoped to have ended up placing higher in the InterAc they are proud of the strides they made from the start of the season to the end. Thanks to the seniors for leadership and inspiration, and to Coach Flemming for setting high standards

The old saying goes, “It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish ” PC’s boys track team had something to prove Based on the returning talent from a disappointing finish in 2012, the pundits were hesitant to call PC the favorite to re-claim the InterAc title in 2013 What the doubters failed to consider were the hidden talents in this year’s team, and the motivated seniors eager to avenge last year’s loss. Examples of the former are Abdul KareemMuhammad improving his triple jump by over two feet to take first at Champs with 43’9”, Nikhil Krishnan scoring in the long jump, and Gavin Hatfield soaring in the pole vault An earlier peformance at Great Valley Relays gave a hint of what the veterans had inside of them when the sprint medley team of Daryl Worley, Brennan Mellor, Charlie Hoyt and James BiggsFrazier won, and then the 4x400 relay team of Daryl, James, Charlie and Tre Williams triumphed. Key points from Worley, Ben Szuhaj, Austin Williams, Mike McGlinchey, Naaz Suluki-Johnson, Mellor, Williams and Hoyt added to a 20-point margin in PC’s championship. Geoff

As can be surmised from the scores this season, the boys tennis team enjoyed as much success as could be expected, given the dominance of Episcopal and Haverford in the InterAc. The third place finishes by talented underclassmen could bode well for the team next year, and the seniors provided leadership with positive attitudes in every match Our thanks to Coach Stevens for keeping things light, and to Coach Rose for always having good advice and positive energy.

Color Day

What Rain? With fingers and toes crossed in the face of an ever-changing forecast, the Blue and Yellow teams slipped, slid, face-planted and splashed their way up and down the stadium field toward one of the most lopsided Color Day results in history During the heaviest of the downpours the younger grades of Yellows proved to be true “mudders” and built an impressive 8-0 lead, under the encouragement of captains Kelly and Big Mike (who wouldn’t run fast with him chasing you?) Blue leaders Molly and Batman Dave were just as enthusiastic, but too many unfortunate slips and trips kept their side from closing the gap By the time the sophomores sealed the deal, raindrops and tears gave way to high fives and cheers, as the seniors lined up for one last pull of the heavy rope. With most of the “beef” on one side of the tape, this last tug sealed Yellow’s 29-8 victory and sent everyone home to dry out for a much needed long weekend before final exams

Those not returning to PC: Megan Kafer (Pre-K) who will have a year’s maternity leave; Katherine Donnard (Mandarin); Channing Weymouth (Associate AD for Girls, Field Hockey and Lacrosse coach); Neno Bartocci (Head Trainer) Joshua Ratner (English, squash and soccer coach); Stephanie Sidlow (asst. nurse); Matt McAuliffe (Social Studies and Latin, basketball/ track coach, Flute by the Foot); Emily Bartlett (Development and Learning Support); Kim Grant (Development); Jay Mahoney (Middle School Director); Marta Zamora (40 years in teaching, almost half of that at PC; Spanish; depart chair; Cultural Series coord , Strategic Planning); Fred Huntington (41 years of English teaching at PC; Squash coach, Mirror Advisor, outdoor skills)

Congratulations, Carly! with love, Mom, Dad, Tim, Emily & Cora
