William Penn Charter School

Since 2004, Mr. Zuccotti has been a pillar of strength in Penn Charter’s History department. Whether in the current AP World History and 10th grade European History classes, or recent courses like AP Art History and the well-loved electives of “Jesus to Julian” and “Rise and Fall of Rome”, students know him best for his unique lecture-based teaching style (the only lectures where students remain awake!) His passion for teaching comes through in his tangential stories and surplus of knowledge, sometimes random but always interesting to students Although eye contact in the hallways is optional, we know he sees each of us Mr Z continually makes students’ top teacher lists and is always sought out by OPCs when they return to visit Mr Zuccotti has also taken on the tough job of honing the skills of Penn Charter’s most argumentative students for the Mock Trial Club.
Although Mrs. Zuccotti is not a teacher at Penn Charter, she is an integral part of our community. As a Middle School lacrosse coach and parent of two Penn Charter students, she is

constantly involved and an enthusiastic volunteer in the Lower School library and at other events. Mrs. Zuccotti is an inspiration not only to athletes but all students overcoming obstacles. She has an unprecedented string of victories in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, and has completed a half-marathon. Recently, she has become a spokesperson for Fox Chase Cancer Research and has begun her own charity, Reading for Reassurance, gathering books for children whose mothers have been diagnosed with breast cancer Closely linked to Penn Charter’s senior class, Mrs Zuccotii has modeled and supported Tickled Pink, a teen-based organization dedicated to raising money and awareness for Breast Cancer, in which many 2012 seniors have participated The Class of 2012 thanks Margaret and Andy Zuccotti for their long-standing commitment to Penn Charter and their familyoriented involvement with the School. Our class is honored to be able to give back some of the love and appreciation that we feel from the Zuccotti family.

The Fall Festival took place on October 1st The Lower Schoolers had a great time enjoying the variety of activites, includuing jumping on the moon bounce, searching through a hay maze, and playing friendly games of hula hoop and potato sack races The Upper School Grill Squad cooked for the event, filling hungry bellies with hamburgers and hot dogs Everyone there had a great time, and many are looking forward to an even bigger Fall Festival next year.

At Semi, the music was pretty tight, and it just seemed high energy, like people were in a real good mood.

Spirit Week is a great way to show you school spirit and pump up the school. The Pep Rally was truly eccentric. It is an amazing closure to an exciting week and excites the school to want to beat GA.

Through service, you make positive connections with all kinds of people. Service opens doors you never knew existed.

-Ani Schug ’13

Service isn’t about the reward. It is about the experience, but still, nothing feels better than when you walk into a room full of kids and see their faces light up.

-Jessica Starr ’13

The Penn Charter community participates in service every day throughout the year
From the ever-popular St Francis Inn Soup Kitchen to the all-new Kroc Center, students use service to tap into the Quaker testimony of stewardship and engage in fun, meaningful activities with their classmates
Students can participate in a wide range of activities, suiting everyone ’ s wide range of interests, from tutoring kids at the Taylor School and Casa del Carmen to learning about issues facing many Americans through Visioning the Good Society Service learning is embedded in Penn Charter’s PK-12 curriculum, especially through the required tenth grade Quakerism class and electives, including Seminar on Poverty and Issues in Physical Disability

On October 12th, 2011, this enthusiasm for service came together during the 13th annual Louis Savino Day of Service The day began with opening remarks by Claire Robertson-Kraft, whose message of civic engagement showed how one person made a profound difference in her neighborhood Following the assembly, Upper School advisories were off to their service sites throughout the community: handcrafting bowls and packing meals for Haiti at school; others traveled off campus, bagging food at Philabundance or cleaning nearby parks and community centers The Day of Service is a great way to get the whole Upper School community to give back to our neighboring communities. Service is the price we pay for the space we occupy in this world. -Mr Ballengee

PC/GA day is a great day that combines tradition, athletics, and competitiveness through a sense of community

The 125th PC/GA was held on Saturday, November 12th. The day proved to be as exciting as anticipated with many close, grueling games. Boys water polo stole the game to win the InterAc title. Girls water polo also had an exciting game with Marion Hirshberg scoring the final goal. The football game ended the day successfully, with a huge win for PC, keeping the crowd on its feet and cheering throughout the first half. Eric Berger scored three touchdowns and won the coveted Geis trophy. Overall, it was a great day for Penn Charter, showing its school spirit and long-held (81-33-11) legacy.

It’s a real honor to get to participate in PC-GA day as both an athlete and a spectator. I get to show my pride for Penn Charter in two great ways.

Brent,
Congratulations on all you have accomplished! We are very proud of the compassionate, insightful and dynamic person you are Your enthusiasm for life and all you do has been a joy to share and experience We know you will make the most of college and your life beyond academics We fondly remember your early and undying passion for sports; the preschool arguments with your brothers to watch Sports Center, not cartoons; the neighborhood pick-up football games (who are all these people in our yard?); kitchen wrestling; beach football; the Church Farm School and the best stalling call ever; tenaciously learning to type, write, and shoot left-handed; your human siren cheer; your first game back to water polo and the buzzer winner against GA; all your other clinches of wins including five wrestling captains (what a competitor!); our putting contests; our road trips; Big Red; rugged off-trail adventures; moose encounters; and, of course, the Gagne Olympics. Hold on to your love of life and your indomitable spirit!
Love, Mom and Dad

Dear A&E, Quite a ride, yes? Maybe not quite what you had in mind; “ more than a few surprises” might be an understatement? Your optimism and creative ideas at the start, your patience and persistence with procrastinating peers throughout, and your timely rescue of apparently orphaned pages are hallmarks of your leadership and character The adept use of color, cut out backgrounds, and tones have made for a beautiful book It was my pleasure to work with you; I am always willing to share the vicissitudes of the job with good editors like yourselves Cherish the good memories, learn from both success and setback Thanks for the ride JB

Great Run David! ¡Te Queremos!
And to our Penn Charter family,
A heartfelt thank you!

Alexis Lo: “This is what Penn Charter is all about Balance Balance as an individual and as a group This is the hidden gift - or as I like to call it, the Quaker surprise - that Penn Charter has given to the class of 2012 This institution balances outstanding academics with competitive athletics, sciences with the arts, encouragement with discipline, freedom with limits It is the balance of these competing ideas, behaviors, and beliefs that allows us to be our best as individuals in our life, our community, and our world Balance allows us to be critical but supportive of ourselves and others, to be both serious and light-hearted, structured but creative, firm in our beliefs and values but also keep an open mind. Penn Charter has taught us how to maintain this harmony and has therefore set us up for great things as we carry this balance throughout life ”

Shane Carr: “Kenny Koplove coined the phrase “I love my team ” When reflecting on this year and this grade, I couldn’t think of a better saying to describe us We love our team, and our consistent support of one another is a testament to that love. The class bonds that form year after year here at Penn Charter are what make this community so unique. The supportive environment that has given me the courage to stand and speak today will no doubt be in the back of my head twenty years from now, giving me the courage as an OPC to stop some shy seventeen-year-old student in Penn Charter clothing on the street, even if only to ask him or her if Steve Bonnie is still there... The sun may be setting on our time here at Penn Charter, but another sun is rising. We should be excited for our next step, not sad that our stay at Penn Charter has come to an end ”

(above, left to right:) Joining the faculty during the school year as substitutes for teachers on maternity leave were Stephanie Kuper and Sue Shelly in Lower School and Dan Wollman in Middle School We also welcomed Emily Bartlett OPC’06 (alumni relations and learning support) and Jeff Diritto (strength and conditioning coach) this year Matthew Barkann joined the Middle School student body (pictured at left)

We thank these fine folks for giving so much of themselves in a brief time: James Bolden (Middle School intern and English); Hanne Duncan (Visual Arts and the Muse of PC Crew); Karinn Figdore (Trask Library, much more than an assistant); Daphne Lee (the pioneer of the Mandarin Chinese program at PC); Caitlyn McDugall (First Grade and Enrichment); Maggie Ryan (Admissions, Pre-K); Mary Schilling (outstanding Lower School teacher and friend); Laurel Tanier (Nurse); and Blair Weymouth (Athletics)
The summer of 2012 will see new milestones for three longserving and respected teachers. Paul Butler (left) will begin a leave of absence after 36 years in various positions: head athletic trainer, chair of the physical education department, and most recently the director of athletics and athletic planning. Stephen Bonnie OPC’66 (center) will transition from director of admissions to a new role as director of stewardship with PC’s development office Rick Mellor OPC’69 (right) stepped away from his role as head varsity baseball coach after 34 years and over 450 victories and 11 InterAc championships. The mentoring, wisdom and good humor each of these gentlemen has given, and continues to give to us, are invaluable
