Our faculty engage and mentor students, from support for judicial clerkship applications to simply taking students out to lunch to talk about their studies.

Penn also has a well-deserved reputation for cross-disciplinary innovation and as a world-leading research hub, attracting national and global figures to campus and to the Law School. To best prepare students to solve the legal challenges of the future, the Law School believes students must receive equal, parallel training in related fields like business, health, technology, education, and social work, which complement and enhance their legal expertise. Law students can easily take a class or classes (all within walking distance) at one of Penn’s 11 other graduate and professional schools, such as Wharton or the Perelman School of Medicine, enroll in one of the over 35 Joint Degrees and Certificate Programs offered, or study abroad at one of our partner law schools around the globe.

LEADERS IN LAW AND BUSINESS WHARTON CERTIFICATE IN MANAGEMENT As a leader in a rapidly changing legal marketplace, Penn Carey Law offers the Wharton Certificate in Management, a one-week, intensive bootcamp program designed to increase the business skills and leadership capabilities of upper-level law students who aspire to lead key parts of a firm, business, non-profit, or government agency.

The course is divided into four modules: Finance and Accounting; Leadership and Organization Design; Strategic Decision-Making and Leadership; and Competitive Advantage: Building a Strong Personal Brand.

Designed exclusively for Law School students and taught by Wharton faculty, the certificate complements and strengthens the practical training Penn Carey Law students receive as part of a comprehensive, crossdisciplinary legal education. The managerial and leadership skills taught in the course build upon Penn Carey Law students’ extensive practice skills, developed in the Law School’s many clinics, externship programs, and pro bono service opportunities and honed through the Center on Professionalism.

FRANCIS J. & WILLIAM POLK CAREY JD/MBA The Francis J. & William Polk Carey JD/MBA Program at the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School and the Wharton School immerses students in an accelerated course of study, preparing them for careers at the intersection of law and business. Students earn both JD and MBA degrees in three years, rather than the five years it would typically take to earn each degree separately.

Students spend their first year at the Law School and the following summer in Law and Wharton courses designed specifically for the Carey JD/MBA Program. The second and third years include a combination of Law and Wharton courses, along with the JD/MBA capstone course in the third year.

Students pursuing a joint degree typically spend their first year at the Law School and second at Penn Engineering. In years three and four, students will take classes in both schools and participate in a capstone course on Technology and Policy co-taught by faculty from both schools. The Master of Computing and Information Technology (MCIT) degree is ideal for those with no prior degree in engineering or computer science but who are interested in the practice of information technology. Students with qualifying undergraduate academic backgrounds and experience may pursue any Penn Engineering master’s degree.

Penn Carey Law’s OFFICE OF CAREER STRATEGY (OCS) provides you guidance and support to achieve your individual career goals, both during law school and throughout your career. Penn Carey Law’s CROSS-DISCIPLINARY JD PROGRAM prepares students for a range of careers in the law and related fields, complemented by professional development programs that build the skills necessary to pursue rewarding and enriching jobs and careers. At Penn Carey Law, students are exposed to the widest variety of legal employers, as well as to Penn alumni worldwide who have used their law degrees to excel in their fields. Penn Carey Law students are recruited nationally and internationally by a diverse array of employers.

The Office of Career Strategy offers tailored individual counseling to all JDs, LLMs, and alumni. With eight counseling professionals — all of whom hold JD degrees — with decades of collective and diverse experience, we provide comprehensive and customized services on all aspects of the job search. PUBLIC SECTOR CAREERS Students come to us to pursue careers dedicated entirely to the public sector or to explore ways in which they can incorporate public interest work into their careers. OCS has two counselors dedicated to supporting students who seek public sector employment. We also offer programs to support the public sector job search, including networking opportunities with public sector lawyers and intensive fellowship application support.

SUMMER EMPLOYMENT FUNDING With financial support from work-study programs, grants, and fellowships, each summer about 200 students pursue a wide variety of summer employment opportunities with courts, government agencies, and public interest organizations around the country.

International fellowship and internship programs support students working in a variety of human rights organizations and governmental and nongovernmental agencies around the world.

As a result, Penn Carey Law students spend their 1L and 2L summers all over the country and the world. They secure placements in federal, state, and local government offices, and legal aid, public policy, and impact litigation organizations.

THE CENTER ON PROFESSIONALISM COP prepares Penn Carey Law students to succeed as professionals, in law school and beyond, by offering an innovative and rigorous professionalism curriculum.

COP’s programs advance students’ development of the mindsets, personal and professional management skills, technological competencies, listening skills, and emotional intelligence tools that enable modern leaders to thrive, adapt, and achieve lasting success.

Some of COP’s programs include: • 1L professionalism cohorts, in which Penn Carey Law students learn from inspiring experts about fundamental professionalism skills.

• Executive and virtual communication coaching sessions.

• Training in the technologies and applications lawyers most commonly use, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Adobe.

• A Project Management for Student Leaders Bootcamp, in coordination with Student Affairs, as well as programs about Time Management.

• The First Generation Professionals (FGP) Fellowship. This programmatic fellowship, available to selected Fellows, provides a unique connection to a mentor, one-on-one coaching opportunities, and private meet-and-greets with oncampus speakers and other legal professionals.

COP’s virtual programs are hosted and retained in an exclusive online platform, available only to Penn Carey Law students. There, past and present COP programs, including its collaborations with other departments, are stored and are available for repeat viewings.

JUDICIAL CLERKSHIPS Many Penn Carey Law graduates begin their careers as law clerks in the chambers of judges around the country. With clerkship counseling and support from OCS and the faculty clerkship committee, almost 400 students and alumni in recent years secured clerkships at all levels of the judiciary, including the U.S. Supreme Court.

Many of our faculty members have held prestigious clerkships, and they — along with OCS’s clerkship counselor — advise and guide students as they move through the application process. Penn Carey Law’s careers office also offers extensive programming on the value of clerking, and clerkship applicants are supported by a network of former clerks, alumni judges, and faculty members committed to the success of our students and alumni.

FOCUS ON CROSS-DISCIPLINARY RESEARCH

DOROTHY ROBERTS has been at the forefront of research about race, medicine, and science. As a Penn Integrates Knowledge (PIK) Professor — a top scholar working in two or more schools at Penn — Roberts holds joint appointments at the Law School, in the Department of Sociology, and in the Department of Africana Studies. Working with Sarah A. Tishkoff, a geneticist and fellow PIK Professor at Penn, the two have argued for an end to the use of genetic concepts of race in biological research, pointing to countless studies that have failed to uphold the concept.

SARAH BARRINGER GORDON is a scholar of law, history, and religion whose research has investigated how the American legal system has impacted the country’s history and culture. In a recent, award-winning article, Gordon, who holds joint appointments in law and history, explains how a seemingly unlikely legal field — corporate law — helped African-Americans gain rights they wouldn’t have otherwise had access to in early America.

FOCUS ON GLOBAL ENGAGEMENT

BETH SIMMONS is one of the University’s newest PIK Professors, and she brings her work as a quantitative political scientist to the field of international human rights. She’s looked at the impact of human rights treaties, whether the International Criminal Court deters crime, and — using data from satellite photography — analyzed border crossings around the world.

APPELLATE ADVOCACY CLINIC Students work closely with the clinic co-directors and with lawyers who volunteer on a pro bono basis from DLA Piper, as well as engage with any public interest advocacy groups with whom the clinic is partnering.

Students learn and practice all aspects of appellate cases: conducting legal research, writing briefs, communicating with clients, and preparing for oral argument. Students work in teams on cases, some direct representation, and some amicus, in addition to attending a weekly seminar focused on appellate strategy and practice.

CIVIL PRACTICE CLINIC In our general litigation clinic, students are certified by state and federal courts to provide legal representation to indigent clients in civil matters. Students interview and counsel clients, develop case strategies, draft pleadings, engage in discovery, negotiate with opposing parties, and provide representation in court hearings and administrative proceedings. In this intensive civil litigation course, students participate in weekly “case rounds” discussions about their cases and learn essential lawyering skills while promoting access to justice for poor and disadvantaged clients.

Students are engaged in litigation on issues such as landlord-tenant, homeownership, civil forfeiture, consumer debt, wage theft, social security disability, and more, representing clients in proceedings in the Court of Common Pleas, Municipal Court, U.S. District Court, and administrative agencies.

Recently: When an immigrant’s real property was stolen from her through a fraudulent deed conveyance while she was out of the country, Civil Practice Clinic students filed a lawsuit in state court, conducted extensive discovery, hired a handwriting expert, argued motions in court, and ultimately obtained justice through an excellent settlement on the day of trial.

The Clinic successfully represented elderly clients and veterans who had lived in their homes for many years but did not have legal title. In these cases, student teams filed actions to quiet title through adverse possession in state court, and, after detailed pre-trial filings and evidentiary hearings, they won legal title for their low-income clients. The hearings were held in the same City Hall courtroom that was used to film the movie “Philadelphia.”

Students have also engaged in larger projects, helping clear criminal records of many individuals, representing workers wrongfully denied the ability to drive for shared transportation services, and partnering with the City in conducting outreach and community education to immigrants wrongfully denied earned wages. In a precedent-setting Pennsylvania Supreme Court case, a team of Civil Practice Clinic students, along with their faculty supervisors, filed an amicus curiae (friend-of-the-court) brief contending that the forfeiture of an elderly mother’s home and car for several marijuana sales by her adult son constituted an excessive fine under the Eighth Amendment.

CRIMINAL DEFENSE CLINIC The Criminal Defense Clinic, conducted in partnership with the Defender Association of Philadelphia, combines hands-on trial experience with an educational component tailored to developing essential criminal defense skills. Students observe arraignments, preliminary hearings, and trials, and participate in mock classroom exercises to prepare them for actual court appearances. Students then serve as defense counsel in actual misdemeanor and felony cases in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas and the Philadelphia Municipal Court under the close supervision of a senior trial attorney employed by the Defender Association.

Recently: Students have appeared in Municipal Court on behalf of dozens of Defender Association clients in felony preliminary hearings and misdemeanor bench trials.

They conducted initial interviews of dozens of Defender clients in felony and misdemeanor cases.

They successfully litigated motions to suppress physical evidence and for dismissal of cases based on excessive pre-hearing delay and discovery violations.

They received trainings in a variety of topics, including immigration law, appellate practice, and the use of expert testimony in narcotics cases.

DETKIN INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY & TECHNOLOGY LEGAL CLINIC Penn Carey Law’s Detkin IP & Technology Legal Clinic provides hands-on practical experience in the commercialization of creativity and innovation.

Students who enroll in the Detkin Clinic become IP counselors to a variety of clients, which in any semester may include scientists, entrepreneurs, artists, and large and small entities, including Penn’s Center for Innovation. By helping a wide variety of clients with their transactional IP issues, students practice at the intersection of law, business, technology, and the arts. The clinic has created strong collaborations with other Penn professional schools (including the Schools of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Medicine, Business [Wharton], and Arts and Sciences), to allow law students to learn with an interdisciplinary perspective how best to serve clients.

Recently: Students counseled clients about patentability and infringement risk for early-stage Penn technologies, including a method to better deliver treatment to and monitor growth of cancerous tumors and a compound to help athletes mitigate the effects of traumatic brain injury.

They advised on copyright and trademark for an author and illustrator of a series of children’s books and for another nonprofit delivering educational programming to Haitian schoolchildren.

They developed a protection strategy for the processes and sculptures of a women-owned glassblowing studio upcycling recycled glass.

They prepared writs of certiorari and motions to quash to the Court of Common Pleas.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP LEGAL CLINIC The Entrepreneurship Legal Clinic is one of the oldest transactional clinics in the nation. Students gain experience in lawyering for entrepreneurs and organizations while creating positive social impact through targeted client representation. Clients include underrepresented entrepreneurs from underserved communities, social enterprises focused on public good in addition to growth, and organizations undertaking socially transformative projects. Students experience first-hand the essential role performed by transactional business law practitioners and develop and refine their own business and legal skills through work in a broad range of areas that include start-up counseling, enterprise structuring, entity formation, contract negotiating and drafting, and the protection of intellectual property.

Recently: Students have worked with a microbrewery focused on employing formerly incarcerated, formerly homeless, and other marginalized people.

They counseled a trade association of mobile food vendors about how to navigate and advocate for better City regulations for this industry.

And they represented a fashion business founded by a Black female entrepreneur trying to overcome barriers to raising capital and scaling her business to compete with mainstream brands.

INTERDISCIPLINARY CHILD ADVOCACY CLINIC The Interdisciplinary Child Advocacy Clinic brings together law and social work students to represent adolescents, children, and families in dependency, custody, and civil legal matters. Clients share a history of trauma, poverty, and being impacted by systems such as child welfare and immigration that can only be effectively addressed through an interdisciplinary practice. The clinic’s unique model of working with medical, mental health, and social work experts also provides an unparalleled opportunity for clients to receive the highest level of legal services. Supervised by interdisciplinary faculty, law students work collaboratively with social work students from the Penn School of Social Policy and Practice to advocate for the client’s legal and social service needs. Law students learn fundamental lawyering skills within the context of child and family advocacy and through the lens of a trauma-informed and client-centered service model.

Recently: The clinic expanded its collaboration with the Philadelphia Nurse-Family Partnership to provide legal support and representation to pregnant and parenting youth who have been impacted by the child welfare system. In one case, students successfully represented a young mother seeking to re-enter foster care and leave the family shelter system. In another matter, students opposed the discharge of their client during the pandemic and successfully argued for extended

jurisdiction and additional supports to transition her and her son to a more stable situation.

As a member of the Family Justice Partnership with Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and Community Legal Services, the clinic provided legal services to address the social determinants of health for children and families in Philadelphia. Students helped staff an onsite utility clinic to assist low-income families with applying for assistance with their gas, water, and electricity bills.

As part of the clinic’s work with immigrant families, students successfully represented parents and relatives seeking to gain custody of children who have been abused or neglected in their home country.

Additionally, students developed a legal training on custodial decision-making for noncitizen parents fearful of deportation and detention. Partnering with community-based organizations, students presented at local community centers and churches and conducted individual meetings with participants.

LEGISLATIVE CLINIC The Legislative Clinic is one of only a handful of law school clinical programs in the nation devoted exclusively to legislative lawyering and the formation of public policy. The clinic combines legislative fieldwork in Congress, state and local legislatures, and national non-profits with classroom study of legislative process, statutory drafting, and legislative advocacy. Lawyers are increasingly called upon to pursue legislative

and regulatory solutions for their clients. In the clinic, students learn about legislative solutions while conducting actual legislative and public policy work on issues of state and national importance. Students spend an average of two to three days per week engaged in legislative work at chosen sites, most frequently in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives in Washington, D.C.

Recently: A student working with U.S. Senator Patrick Leahy and the Senate Judiciary Committee researched and wrote on legislative issues involving unaccompanied immigrant children, Economic Communications Privacy Act reform, the internet, criminal justice reform, and judicial nominations.

A student attached to U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal’s office focused deeply on antitrust and price-fixing issues, conducting research and writing and developing policy positions related to proposed health insurance mergers and airline surcharges.

Another student interning in the late U.S. Representative Elijah Cummings’ office conducted research on obtaining increased funding for a historically Black college, helped arrange witnesses for a legislative hearing on a pending witness protection bill, and attended briefings on prison healthcare reform.

A student interested in state legislative affairs chose to work with a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, for whom she conducted extensive

research and analysis on redistricting reform and drafted a comprehensive redistricting bill.

Another student worked closely with a Philadelphia City Councilmember on critical local issues such as affordable housing, community land trusts, and gun violence.

MEDIATION CLINIC The Mediation Clinic teaches conflict resolution and creative problem solving. After studying negotiation and mediation theory and observing mediators in practice, students are trained in a wide range of mediation skills. Under faculty supervision, students then serve as front-line mediators for civil litigation in Pennsylvania trial courts, employment discrimination claims, child custody (domestic and international), neighborhood violence, and campus discipline cases.

Seminar topics range from restorative justice to judicial settlements to online dispute resolution.

Recently:

Students conducted an intensive mediation and mediation representation work as part of a novel program of divorce mediation offered by the New York City Legal Services’ Access to Justice Program.

Students mediated Hague Convention international child abduction disputes on referral from the U.S. State Department. Students worked on a matter that involved a six-year-old child allegedly kidnapped to the Midwestern United States from Europe.

TRANSNATIONAL LEGAL CLINIC Students in the Transnational Legal Clinic engage in direct representation of individuals in asylum and other immigration proceedings while also participating in broader systemic advocacy to advance the human rights of migrants in the United States and around the world. Students explore their role as lawyers in relationships and settings that cross cultures, languages, borders, and legal systems.

Benefiting from close faculty supervision and mentorship, students develop core lawyering competencies such as interviewing, counseling, legal research and writing, case theory and narrative development, persuasion, and negotiation, all with the aim of advancing the goals of their individual and organizational clients and partners.

Recently: Students have represented individuals and families who fear targeted violence, some at the hands of their government and others at the hands of their domestic partners and family members, in a diverse range of countries where significant corruption and discrimination led to their governments’ inability and unwillingness to protect them. Where necessary, students have pursued appeals before the Board of Immigration Appeals and in Circuit Courts.

Students have submitted urgent action communications to U.N. human rights bodies to address egregious violations against immigrants held in detention centers in Georgia. They participated in litigation at the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights on abuses against unaccompanied children held in immigrant detention and on a case seeking termination of the “Stay in Mexico” program. Students drafted amicus briefs addressing international human rights law specific to arbitrary and prolonged detention in cases before the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the First and Ninth Circuits. Looking beyond the U.S. borders, students have aided advocates in Nepal to advance the rights of the country’s migrant workers, pursuing law reform and other initiatives as Nepal transitions to a new constitution and a federal system of government.

Students have traveled to El Paso, TX; Lumpkin, GA; Leesport, PA; and Tijuana, Mexico, to provide pro bono support to asylum seekers through faculty-supervised service immersion weeks.

LEGAL PRACTICE SKILLS In Law School, you’ll learn to “think like a lawyer” — and that work begins in your year-long, six-credit course Legal Practice Skills class. Legal Practice Skills is a class in lawyering: legal analysis, writing, research, and oral advocacy. You will learn how to formulate a sustained and cogent legal argument, find the authority to support that argument, present that argument, and counter your opponent’s arguments in writing and orally.

In Legal Practice Skills, you will also practice communicating formally, in legal documents and oral arguments, and informally, as all lawyers do on a daily basis, through email and in face-to-face meetings.

Through a series of exercises designed to simulate actual law practice, Legal Practice Skills also exposes you to a range of other practice skills, including negotiations, contract drafting, effective oral advice techniques, client interviewing, and other skills.

The course urges students to think broadly about how different assignments and tasks fit together and how they contribute to the ultimate goal of representing a client. Through this interactive and hands-on class, students are able to engage in deep analysis, advocacy, and problem-solving and put their developing lawyering skills to practice.

A TRANSFORMATIVE GIFT In the fall of 2020, the Robert and Jane Toll Foundation, founded by alumni Robert Toll L’66 and Jane Toll GSE’66, made a $50 million gift to Penn Carey Law School to dramatically expand the Toll Public Interest Scholars and Toll Public Interest Fellows Programs, doubling the number of public interest graduates in the coming decade through a combination of full and partial tuition scholarships.

The Toll Foundation’s $50 million gift is the largest gift in history devoted entirely to the training and support of public interest lawyers. TPIC’s Service Corps houses the Toll Scholars and Fellows and provides programming for the broader public interest and law school community to TPIC’s Service Corps specifically houses the Toll Public Interest Scholars and Fellows programs, while the Public Interest Experience (PIE) provides programming for the broader public interest and Law School community.

TOLL PUBLIC INTEREST SCHOLARS Toll Public Interest Scholars are selected upon admission to Penn Carey Law on the basis of their lived and professional experiences, academic records, potential for leadership, and dedication to pursuing public interest careers following graduation. Toll Scholars receive full-tuition scholarships for all three years of law school.

TOLL PUBLIC INTEREST FELLOWS Toll Public Interest Fellows are second- and third-year students who desire to hone their leadership capabilities, further develop their legal skills, and challenge themselves to think about complex social, political, and cultural issues from new vantage points. Fellows are selected at the end of their first year on the basis of their lived and professional experiences, involvement in Penn Carey Law’s public interest community, and commitment to pursuing public interest careers following graduation. Toll Fellows receive partial-tuition scholarships for their second and third years of law school.

Since graduation, SHEERINE ALEMZADEH L’11 has focused on public interest projects that address genderbased violence, particularly in the workplace. After graduating from Penn Carey Law, Alemzadeh received a prestigious Skadden Fellowship, which supported her work at the CHICAGO ALLIANCE AGAINST SEXUAL EXPLOITATION. There, she represented mostly low-income survivors of workplace sexual violence and went on to co-found the COALITION AGAINST WORKPLACE SEXUAL VIOLENCE. To continue the work of empowering low-wage workers who experience sexual violence, Alemzadeh co-founded HEALING TO ACTION, a non-profit that is using an innovative, survivor-centered community organizing model to end gender-based violence by building the leadership and collective power of the communities most impacted.

Through it all, Alemzadeh says, the Penn Carey Law network has supported her work in instrumental ways.

Whether it’s talking through a program strategy, donating to our fundraiser, or giving me a pep talk when work is really demanding, I’ve gained so much strength from my alumni network,” she said. “I am so grateful for how my friends at Penn Carey Law champion my work and are so supportive of approaching legal systems and injustice in creative and unconventional ways.”

Penn Carey Law’s robust public interest network contains many others who also focus their work on fighting for justice in employment, including NINA MARTINEZ L’15. As a Skadden Fellow at the NEW YORK LEGAL ASSISTANCE GROUP, Martinez developed the Employment Mediation Project, which provided mediation services and advocacy to low-income workers embroiled in employment disputes. Today, Martinez is an associate at leading plaintiff-side employment litigation firm OUTTEN AND GOLDEN LLP, where she focuses her practice on class actions.

“The Penn Carey Law network was an incredible source of support as I endeavored to build my career as a public interest attorney,” said Martinez. “Both during law school and after I entered the workforce, TPIC staff provided meaningful guidance, working with me to explore my career aspirations and discuss concrete strategies.”

Each year, senior government officials and policy practitioners come to the Law School to teach and interact with students. These fellows encourage students to consider public service careers while offering them practical knowledge of how the law intersects with different aspects of government. OCS and TPIC are committed to supporting students who seek government employment through programs and career counseling dedicated to the government service job search, including networking opportunities with government service lawyers. In addition, we provide dedicated and intensive government honors application support. Penn Carey Law graduates have recently received positions in the U.S. Department of Justice Honors Program, the Office of the U.S. Solicitor General, prosecutor and public defender offices across the country, U.S. Attorneys’ offices, and the state and local government offices including the Pennsylvania Office of the Attorney General, the Oregon Department of Justice, and the Philadelphia City Law Department.

TOLL PUBLIC INTEREST SCHOLARS AND FELLOWS PROGRAMS These two rigorous programs are for select students committed to careers in public service. Through customized learning modules, participation in community-wide public interest events, mentoring, summer internships, and regular interaction with staff, faculty, students, and alumni, these programs facilitate the development of service-oriented leaders who are committed to utilizing their law degrees to foster justice and equity in the world. Toll Scholars receive full-tuition scholarships. Toll Fellows receive partial-tuition scholarships.

GUARANTEED SUMMER FUNDING FOR PUBLIC SECTOR INTERNSHIPS At Penn Carey Law, there are no financial barriers to taking unpaid summer internships in the public sector or pursuing public interest work anywhere in the world. The Law School has one of the leading summer internship funding programs in the nation. All eligible first- and second-year law students are guaranteed to receive funding for unpaid public interest summer internships.

Each year, close to 200 students take advantage of this opportunity. Over the last 10 years, the Law School’s guaranteed summer funding has supported substantive legal work done by students locally, nationally, and globally in over 1,600 unpaid public interest and government placements.

POSTGRADUATE FELLOWSHIPS Penn Carey Law’s postgraduate fellowship program has been highly successful in launching the public interest careers of recent graduates. TOLL LOAN REPAYMENT ASSISTANCE PROGRAM Penn Carey Law supports the careers of alumni committed to public service through a generous loan forgiveness program. The Toll Loan Repayment Assistance Program (TolLRAP) enables students to pursue public interest careers without regard to indebtedness. The program provides direct financial assistance on an annual basis to assist graduates in making their monthly loan payments. The program also rewards graduates’ sustained service in public sector careers through the TolLRAP PLUS program.

CAREER SUPPORT Penn Carey Law’s commitment to public interest lawyering is unsurpassed. In addition to the specialized counseling offered by the Law School’s careers office, TPIC leverages the support of faculty members and an extensive alumni network to prepare students for the highly competitive public interest marketplace. During your first year at Penn Carey Law, you’ll learn the fundamentals of lawyering through the Legal Practice Skills course. You’ll take on the role of a lawyer solving problems for your client — identifying legal issues, investigating the facts, finding the relevant law, making strategic choices, and presenting analyses and solutions orally and in writing.

But your Legal Practice Skills course isn’t just an introduction to the profession of lawyering, it’s an introduction to life at Penn Carey Law. As part of the curriculum, you’ll be assigned to a cohort of 12 to 15 students who will share the same schedule of classes as you, participate in professionalism programming with you, and become your close colleagues as you progress through your first year. INCLUSIVE EXCELLENCE The Office of Equity & Inclusion (E&I) partners with faculty, staff, alumni, students, and industry experts to cultivate inclusive excellence at Penn Carey Law. For example, E&I has launched a Law and Inequality series. This series highlights work that advances equity and the law. PHILADELPHIA IS ALSO A GREAT PLACE TO PLAY The city has some of the most well-reviewed restaurants in the nation featuring world-renowned chefs. Rittenhouse Square is a great place to spend a beautiful afternoon, and its cafés are fabulous for people-watching over an evening cocktail.

Old City is one of Philly’s hot spots, with great restaurants, bars, and clubs. Don’t miss out on “First Friday,” the first Friday of every month on which Old City’s numerous art galleries throw opening parties in the evening and whose crowds spill out into the streets. Follow any night out with a late-night visit to Pat’s or Geno’s at 9th and Passyunk in South Philly. These two famous cheesesteak places are open 24 hours (closed major holidays). Be sure to explore every neighborhood’s local gems, such as Frankford Hall or Johnny Brenda’s in Northern Liberties or Pizzeria Vetri in Fairmount.

And don’t forget our Sansom Street restaurants located right across from the main entrance of the Law School.

For those of you coming from a city like New York or Los Angeles, the size of Philadelphia will seem rather modest in comparison. Learning to get around will be easy. For the rest of you coming from suburban and rural areas, you will be pleasantly surprised at how quickly you attain your newfound mastery of the Philly transportation network. It’s easy without a car, so you might want to consider not bringing one to law school. (Car insurance is expensive in Philadelphia, as is parking.)

WALKING If you are lucky to live within walking distance from the Law School, as most students do, take advantage!

Walking one mile at a fairly brisk pace will take about 20 minutes, and it’s a great way to get your daily exercise in.

BIKING The larger streets in Philadelphia have good, spacious bike lanes, and many Penn Carey Law students take advantage. One piece of indispensable advice: you need a high quality U-lock to protect your bike and a helmet, too! In September 2009, the City launched an “expressway” for bicyclists from river to river, eastbound on Pine Street and westbound on Spruce Street. (We’re only four blocks from the Schuylkill River.)

In Spring 2015, the city of Philadelphia launched a bike share program called Indego Bike Share. It is an inexpensive and convenient way to get around the city. Visit http://www.rideindego.com for further information.

SUBWAY/TROLLEY Most students who ride the subway take the Blue Line (also known as the Market Frankford line, MFL, or just the El), which runs east-west (all the way from beyond 2nd & Market to 69th & Market). During rush hour, there’s a train every five minutes or so. At other times, the intervals range up to 10–15 minutes between trains.

Trolleys go right to 36th & Sansom Street. They are small — almost bus-like — and you must board the trolley immediately or they will take off without you.

Each ride costs a flat fee of $2.50 (if you pay by cash) or $2.00 (if you buy a Septa Key Card and add money to the Travel Wallet ahead of time). A weekly transpass costs $25.50, and a monthly costs $96.

Alternatively, Penn students can also purchase a Penn Pass that’s good on SEPTA subway/trolley/buses for one semester, which gives unlimited rides within the City of Philadelphia as well as rides on the R1 line to the airport.

CABS Taxis in Philadelphia aren’t too expensive and should be easy to find along the main thoroughfares of Chestnut and Walnut streets. If you want to “guarantee” a cab, just go nearby to the Sheraton Hotel at 36th and Chestnut, the Inn at Penn at 37th and Sansom, or near UPENN Hospital at 34th and Spruce.

Buses are the same price as the subway and trolley and also accept SEPTA Key Cards and the Penn Pass. Buses 21 and 42 head westward (from Center City towards West Philadelphia) on Walnut Street and head eastward (from West Philadelphia towards Center City) on Chestnut Street. While convenient, the bus system is not as reliable or punctual as the subway.

The Penn Bus East is an evening bus service that runs Monday through Friday between 5 p.m. and midnight, serving Center City (along Chestnut Street, 23rd Street, South Street, 20th Street, and Walnut Street). The Penn Bus West is an evening bus service that runs Monday through Friday between 5 p.m. and midnight, serving West Philadelphia (along Baltimore Avenue, Springfield Avenue, 48th Street, Pine Street, Locust Street, and Spruce Street). Both Penn Bus East and Penn Bus West operate on a fixed schedule and established route. They do not deviate from that route, but will pick up and deliver passengers at designated stops on campus and at any corner off campus along the route. PENN SHUTTLE SERVICES (FREE!) Various shuttle vehicles provide transportation to and from Campus Transit Stops throughout Center City and West Philadelphia, within defined boundaries. Students generally wait for the shuttle to campus for around 5–20 minutes. Penn Shuttle provides “to door” transportation off campus within Penn Transit’s service area every day of the week between 6 p.m. and 3 a.m. (The E shuttle is 12:00 a.m.–3 a.m. during the week, 6 p.m.–3 a.m. Saturday and Sunday). There are three different Penn Shuttle routes: East, West, and Xtra. You can tell which route a Penn Shuttle is driving by the lit-up “E,” “W,” or “X” on top of the van. TRIPS OUT OF TOWN Convenient transportation is available if you want to enjoy other cities and destinations: AMTRAK: Only four blocks away at 30th Street, trains run on a regular basis. New York City is only one hour and 20 minutes away and Washington, D.C., is two hours away.

PHILADELPHIA BOLTBUS AND MEGABUS: Located at 30th Street, along the north side of John F. Kennedy Boulevard, the Boltbus and Megabus offer an inexpensive way to get to New York City, Washington, D.C., or Boston.

GREYHOUND: Greyhound also offers various destinations from its Philadelphia headquarters at 1001 Filbert Street.

SEPTA COMMUTER TRAINS: SEPTA offers many trains to the Philadelphia suburbs and a line to Trenton, NJ, where you can catch either Amtrak or NJ Transit (much less expensive) to New York City.

PATCO: Patco is the commuter line to New Jersey that runs frequently and on-time.

Over 30 miles of Schuylkill River Trail that runs along the Schuylkill River from Center City through Valley Forge National Historical Park in Montgomery County is great for getting some fresh air. The trail passes Manayunk (a great place for brunch) and leads to the park’s Betzwood Picnic Area.

The Clinton/Parker Wellness Suite Students have their own designated spaces to relax and recharge. In 2019, the Law School opened the Clinton/Parker Wellness Suite. These two new spaces include a small workshop space to host wellness programs and a comfortable living room space designed for relaxation. The living room features a large-screen multi-player video game console, comfy chairs and sofas, and a kitchenette.

The Clinton/Parker Wellness Suite is named after two beloved members of the Penn Carey Law community who made student well-being the cornerstone of their work in the Law School. In 2017, the Dean of Students, Gary Clinton, was due to retire and the graduating JD class wanted to pay homage to him by naming the Wellness Suite after him. That same year, when the Associate Dean for Graduate Programs, Matthew Parker L’00 EdD’15 passed away, the LLM Class took up a contribution to add his name to the suite. The Clinton/Parker Wellness Suite recognizes the energy Clinton and Parker dedicated to student welfare by providing a space for students to give attention to their own well-being. LEARNING OUTCOMES Penn Carey Law’s program of legal education, combining our rich, interdisciplinary curriculum, varied co-curricular activities, and pro bono responsibilities, prepares our students for admission to the bar and to serve as effective, ethical, and responsible members of the legal profession. FINANCIAL AID OPPORTUNITIES MERIT-BASED AWARDS All applicants are considered for merit scholarships based on their admissions material. Applicants may be invited to apply for certain scholarships, which may include a separate application, interview, or additional essay. Nominations are made on a rolling basis starting in February. Financial aid awards will be finalized when copies of the 2020 Federal Tax Returns and the forms listed below are submitted and reviewed. We recommend that you retain a photocopy of completed forms for your records.

LAW SCHOOL NEED-BASED GRANT APPLICANTS If you are applying for Law School need-based grants and all other forms of need-based financial assistance, complete the following:

1. Submit the 2022–2023 FAFSA to the U.S. Department of Education at https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa. Penn’s Federal School Code is 003378.

2. Complete a financial aid application for the fall of 2022 through the CSS Profile Application website: https://cssprofile.collegeboard.org/.

There is a $24 fee. Need-eligible students who enroll at Penn Carey Law will receive a $24 tuition reimbursement for this fee at the time of matriculation. Penn Carey Law’s CSS Code is 2495.

FUNDING YOUR PUBLIC INTEREST CAREER Penn Carey Law’s commitment to lawyering in the public interest is unsurpassed. Since 2006, the amount of financial assistance available annually for all Penn Carey Law students has more than doubled in the form of scholarships, postgraduate fellowships, substantial loan repayment assistance, and guaranteed summer funding. Our commitment includes: • Our public interest counselors guiding students and alumni through applications for postgraduate fellowships and loan repayment assistance. Our counselors also provide comprehensive support and access to resources for securing summer internships and public interest and government employment.

• The Toll Public Interest Center (TPIC), Office of Career Strategy (OCS), and a faculty committee providing consistent support and an unrivaled network for students seeking postgraduate fellowships. This includes personalized assistance during the rigorous application process for national fellowships, as well as postgraduate fellowships sponsored by Penn.

TOLL LOAN REPAYMENT ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (TolLRAP) Penn Carey Law supports the careers of students and alumni committed to public service through our loan repayment assistance program, which is one of the most generous in the country. The Toll Loan Repayment Assistance Program provides substantial relief from law school debt burdens. Repayment assistance is provided on an annual basis for up to 10 years following graduation to alumni working in public interest positions. Eligible graduates receive TolLRAP assistance for the full payment of their federal loans in an eligible income-driven repayment plan. In addition, participants can be eligible for TolLRAP PLUS assistance. TolLRAP PLUS provides support to graduates for their continuing and sustained service. Participants become vested in the Program after three years and are then eligible for TolLRAP PLUS payments. SUMMER PUBLIC INTEREST INTERNSHIP FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES At Penn Carey Law, there are no financial barriers to taking unpaid summer internships in the public sector or pursuing public interest work anywhere in the U.S. or abroad. Funding for such work is guaranteed, and each summer approximately 200 students take advantage of this opportunity.

Students work with counselors from the Office of Career Strategy and the Toll Public Interest Center to find the right program for their public interest placement and funding needs. Penn Carey Law’s guaranteed summer funding program provides financial support for public interest work in government, legal services, non-profit organizations, and NGOs.

POSTGRADUATE FELLOWSHIPS Each year, Penn Carey Law students and recent graduates secure career-launching public interest fellowships with the Skadden Foundation, Equal Justice Works, the Independence Foundation, Immigrant Justice Corps, and Gideon’s Promise. Penn Carey Law also has its own robust fellowship program:

THE LANGER, GROGAN AND DIVER FELLOWSHIP IN SOCIAL JUSTICE — Generously funded by Penn Carey Law alumni at Langer, Grogan & Diver P.C., this fellowship is a Delaware Valleybased fellowship that will fund one year of full-time work at a sponsoring public interest organization.

THE PENN CAREY LAW PUBLIC INTEREST FELLOWSHIPS — These fellowships fund one year of full-time work at a national or international sponsoring public interest organization.

THE TOLL PUBLIC INTEREST FELLOWSHIP — This fellowship funds one year of full-time work at a national or international sponsoring public interest organization.

UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA LAW REVIEW PUBLIC INTEREST FELLOWSHIP — This fellowship funds one year of fulltime work at a national or international sponsoring public interest organization.

PENN CAREY LAW CATALYST FELLOWSHIP — This fellowship funds one year of post-graduate volunteer attorney work in government, nonprofit, or international organizations.

In recent years, our graduates have launched their careers through fellowships with a wide range of organizations including the ACLU of Hawaii, the Brennan Center for Justice, the National Women’s Law Center, Earthjustice, Reprieve, Community Legal Services of Philadelphia, and the Defender Association of Philadelphia.

TOLL PUBLIC INTEREST SCHOLARS & FELLOWS PROGRAMS The Toll Public Interest Scholars receive a generous scholarship that includes full tuition and fees for all three years of study at Penn Carey Law. This program also offers a generous stipend of $10,000 for public interest employment for each summer, including the summer following graduation. All admitted students are welcome to apply to the Toll Public Interest Scholars Program. Instructions for applying will be sent shortly after admission, starting in January. Scholars are selected on the basis of their demonstrated commitment to public service, their academic record, and their potential for leadership in the legal community.

The Toll Public Interest Fellows receive a half-tuition scholarship for their second and third years of study at Penn Carey Law. This program also offers a generous stipend of $10,000 for public interest employment for the summer bridging 2L and 3L, plus $10,000 for the summer following graduation. All students are welcome to apply to the Toll Public Interest Fellows Program. Interested students apply and are selected during the summer following their first year of study. Application instructions are sent out in late spring. Fellows are selected on the basis of their demonstrated commitment to public service, their engagement with the Law School’s pro bono and public interest communities during 1L, and their potential for leadership within the legal community.
