FITNESS TIP The lunge is a great exercise to train your legs individually. Not only does this exercise challenge your stability and core strength, but it also helps build strength within the entire lower body. Make sure to check out the correct vs incorrect versions pictured here: CORRECT LUNGE

• Body weight is evenly distributed between both the front and rear leg.

• In most cases, having a slight lean forward will help engage more of the front leg glute muscles, as well as relieving tension in the opposite knee joint while going through the movement.

• Chest up, core engaged and maintaining tightness in the upper back muscles.

INCORRECT LUNGE

• Positioning your body weight too far forward on front toe will limit the use of the glutes, the preferred muscle group.

• Stance is too tight causing front knee to track too far over the front toe, which may cause sheering in the knee joint if you’re already prone to knee injuries.

• Shoulder blades are not retracted, causing the upper back to drop and round forward. With heavier loads in particular this may become an issue for maintaining balance and preventing lower back injuries.
