October 13-15 SNHU saw an influx of families and alumni for the university's annual Homecoming. One that proved to be among the largest events in campus history.

Homecoming at SNHU is often one of the largest and busiest weekends of the year.

Events and activities are organized by many on campus clubs, organizations and offices, and new or old college students, alumni and faculty member have the opportunity to enjoy them with the campus community or their families.

One of the many on campus leaders in attendance throughout the weekend was Shannon Conway, CAPE vice president and major concert chair. She emphasized the community feeling throughout the weekend, saying, “Homecoming

for us is always just a really fun time to see family, see friends see alumni… The community that we have here is unbelievable.”

kick off the Homecoming weekend Friday night as Fetty Wap performed with opener and SNHU alumni, Matt Corman (‘17). The performance was highly anticipated as all 1,500 tickets were sold out within 12 hours of being on sale back in September.

Throughout the weekend, tours were held of the campus’ new buildings, Monadnock, the College of Engineering Technology and Aeronautics (CETA), the Green Center and the Gustafson Center, the last two which had yet to have their officially opening events as of last year’s Homecoming.

Saturday was the beginning of the Destination: SNHU Street Fair which saw participation from many of the campus’ clubs, offices and organizations in addition to multiple local food trucks, amusement park rides, attractions and live performances by current and former SNHU students.

ident, was among the various student leaders sponsoring a table at the Street Fair with her club. While spending time with her family, Camera also helped host Putt Putt on the Green Space. “For me,” she shared, “I think Homecoming signifies bringing together everyone as one… and making memories as a community.”

With eight SNHU sports teams in action on Saturday, there was constant action, culminating in the Men’s Soccer team beating in-state rival Franklin Pierce University 2-0 in a tense game on a pair of late goals from Louka Masset and Alex Satrustegui.

Each year, SNHU’s Homecoming celebration draws crowds of not only current students, families and faculty members, but also presents an opportunity for alumni to return to the campus to reconnect with friends and faculty.

Giving Back to Our Community

As students, for many of us, Manchester, New Hampshire is our second home.

While Manchester may not be the place many of us grew up, took our first steps, or where our high schools lie, it is still a place we hold to our heart and where have placed a pin on the corkboard of our lives.

Because of this, it becomes impossible not to want to give back to it.

Though maybe not the place that gave us childhood memories, it is the place that has given us the ability to grow, to learn, to make mistakes. As such, making a point to be a part of the larger community beyond just SNHU is not only essential but a responsibility. Our service, in many ways, is the rent we pay on calling this place home.

ects organized in every aspect of community life. But it is important that we, too, seek them out.

One opportunity that presents itself each October is Manchester's Making Strides event at Arms Park to raise money and awareness for breast cancer research and survivors. Each year, our organization participates, showing strength and love for a permanent community, even though our time in it may be temporary.

This event, for us, is a chance to support those in the local area with our attendance, our fundraising, and our solidarity. It can be easy, as a college student, to become complacent in our actions. We balance work and class, families and friends, clubs, organizations, and everything in between.

These are the years of our lives when we are "allowed" and even encouraged to be selfish. To focus on ourselves and our own personal growth.

. . . . . . .

But in the same token, it is critical to utilize this time of change and development to also support our community.

Through service and support we can both create opportunities of growth within ourselves as well as within the environments that enable and empower us to do so.

So this is our call to you.

To every student that, for whatever period of time, does in fact call this place home.

Give back. And give thanks.

Take the time to appreciate the city and the community beyond the SNHU you call home and find new ways every day to celebrate it. Whether it is walking, marching, volunteering, finding a cause that you are passionate about: do it. Your time at SNHU may be temporary, but SNHU's time in Manchester is not.

Be an active part of your community and be an active participant in your college years.

It will make all the difference.

turned to visit the campus, bringing back the positive energy that characterized him during his undergraduate years. A more recent graduate with a Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design and Media Arts, he shared that, while post-graduate life was a wild ride, he loved being able to come back to SNHU.

In the end, the Saturday of Homecoming was greeted with an uncharacteristically beautiful October day and

alumni, new and old, who came back to campus to celebrate their community.

Joe Cote, alumni of the class of 2017, echoed the sentiments of so many alumni, sharing his gratitude at still being able to get involved and to return to campus, even after graduation.

“Homecoming is.... coming back home.”

Adam Blumenthal Brings Virtual Worlds to Life

The School of Arts and Sciences has opened a new virtual reality (VR) lab in the Academic Center. To help students get excited about the wealth of possibility in this growing technology, SNHU invited Adam Blumenthal, artist-in-residence of VR at Brown University, to introduce students to VR and its

wealth of applications. “[I want] students to be excited about this new field,” said Blumenthal. “This field is really happening now and it’s going to be a huge career opportunity.”

VR comes in three different flavors. Room VR is created within a specialized room with an array of different projectors (70 in Brown University’s case) and a special set of glasses. Head-

Mounted Display VR is coupled with hand controllers, and is the typical highend consumer setup (like the HTC Vive).

A smartphone VR setup uses a peripheral like Google Cardboard, available for as little as $6 and the phones that everybody already owns.

In Blumenthal’s work, he uses each of these for educational applications. For example, he and a group of 14 Brown students recently worked on a VR experience recreating The Gaspee Affair, a 1772 event where Rhode Island colonists burned a British Royal Navy ship.

This project involved the use of a Google Jump camera, loaned to the university, consisting of 16 stereoscopic GoPros and capable of taking 360-degree video. This camera was brought to a number of historic locations to film with real actors.

“One need not be a computer programmer. Among my 14 students last semester, only four were programmers, the rest were all over the map,” said Blumenthal.

Another technique Blumenthal uses to transport viewers back in time is pho-

togrammetry, using a series of two-dimensional photos stitched together to create three dimensional objects and models.

Jose Hernandez, a game programming major at SNHU with an interest in VR, said, “I think it’s really interesting that you can use photogrammetry to create 3D environments without having to have an artist meticulously model them. Instead, the artist can just go back and touch them up.”

Other applications Blumenthal has worked with include physical therapy machines to aid veterans in adapting to prosthetic limbs and 360 degree recordings of surgical procedures.

“I don’t think [VR] is just the current fad, I think it’s inevitable,” Blumenthal said during his presentation.

Goldman Sachs predicts the industry to be worth $180 billion annually in the next 10 years, while Bank of America predicts $150 billion annually in the next 5, said Blumenthal in his presentation.

Blumenthal is currently working with the University of Arizona to bring to life

16 VR modules for online courses, one of which is an experience in Thomas Edison’s lab in 1890, right after inventing the light bulb. Students will have the ability to explore, experiment, and analyze primary and secondary sources. Included within the program is a virtual notebook that will track students’ progress. Students can then reference these notes when doing their coursework.

The courses are designed to be interdisciplinary. The Edison experience will tie together history and science.

Another planned course will center on Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar.” Students will have the opportunity to perform a crime scene investigation during the piece’s iconic murder. This module will bring together literature, history and science.

Blumenthal finished by strongly encouraging students to check out the VR lab upon its opening.

“No matter what your interest is as far as major or profession, VR is likely to touch it in the near future.

Having a little bit of exposure in your college years will better prepare you.”

advisor, shared the role in assisting the student coordinators in regard to behind the scenes work, handling logistics, details, paperwork and questions, as well as offering a listening ear and his support. “Overall the night went totally awesome,” Balestracci shared. “A lot of [the students I’ve spoken to] thought it was amazing... they talked a lot about how they didn’t know how much of an entertainer he [Fetty] was on stage... A lot of students thought it was really fun.”

This sentiment was reflected in the students who attended the event, as well as those who volunteered.

security expressed her happiness to have been able to participate in both the volunteer aspect while not missing out on the show itself. “I was fortunate enough to still watch the concert from where I was standing. I thought it was a successful night and I would do it again next year."

Senior Nico Holtkamp, commented on the overall atmosphere of the event from his position as a volunteer.

"I loved the effort that CAPE members put in, in order to make such a great event work,” said Holtkamp “This is why I chose to volunteer. I wanted to support that. It was so much fun to be part of such an amazing event and to see the love with

which the concert was organized.”

Now that Fetty Wap has come and gone and the anxiety that comes with hosting such a large event has passed, Conway only had gratitude for all of those involved in making this year’s major concert a success.

“We just want to say thank you to all of the students who came out and supported us, to all of our volunteers... this was the most crazy thing ever and for me standing on stage and watching, kind of looking out and seeing everyone there supporting us as CAPE and supporting the concert that we worked so hard was unbelievable. So thank you all so so much.”

On October 13, Southern New Hampshire University’s student-run organization Coordinators of Activities and Programming Events (CAPE) hosted their annual major concert as a part of 2017’s Homecoming celebration.

Selling out in the first 13 hours of being on sale earlier this month, the concert was set to be bigger and better than its predecessors.

In this regard, the concert met and exceeded many people’s expectations, as just un-

der 1,400 students and alumni crowded into the Athletic Complex to see performers Fetty Wap and SNHU alumnus, Matt Corman.

Fetty Wap’s energetic set and team of entertainers brought the energy to the event, but CAPE Major Concert Chair, Shannon Conway, said that prior to the event, they could not help but feel all the potential anxieties of the night. “One of the big concerns that everyone had with our show this year was that Fetty wasn’t going to show,” Conway said. “But, as soon as he stepped into the building, we all felt so good just knowing that we proved everyone wrong.

For first-time diners, Davis recommends the Jambalaya, a hearty combination of rice, spicy tomato sauce, vegetables and house-made andouille sausage. A vegetarian version is also available.

The Southern-inspired dessert offerings include bread pudding, red velvet cake and pecan pie.

The kitchen is open until 11 p.m. from Tuesday to Thursday and until 1 a.m. on weekends.

Downtown Manchester is home to a plethora of interesting restaurants, many of which are concentrated on or near Elm Street; however, for those willing to venture outside the hustle and bustle of Elm Street when looking for a place to eat, they will be rewarded with a meal at Madear’s.

Tucked away on Hanover Street, this unassuming little eatery specializes in modern Cajun fare reminiscent of what you would find in New Orleans. Half of the menu is devoted to Cajun-inspired small plates. These items are meant for sharing and are especially popular when dining with a group.

Additionally, the menu features full-size entrees, po boy sandwiches served on fresh French bread, rice bowls

and homemade desserts.

Owners Rob Curry and Kyle Davis opened Madear’s about three months ago. Curry grew up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and has over twenty years of experience in the industry.

The name of the restaurant is derived from his grandmother, Martha “Madear” Sullivan.

Davis, a Hudson, New Hampshire native, has a passion for baking and is responsible for all the restaurant’s scratch-made desserts. Davis worked as an engineer for 16 years before entering the restaurant industry.

“Previous to this, we had a catering restaurant in Boston; after doing that for a while, we decided to pursue our dream of opening a restaurant,” said Davis.

Despite its relative youth, Madear’s has gained quite a following, “The response has been great.

five things to know about student loans More than $3,000 in loan debt is accrued every second, according to Debt.org. Between 2004 and 2013, student loan debt tripled, reaching a new high of $986 billion during that period. Students have more debt than ever before.

“The class of 2016 owes an average of $37,173,” according to loan expert, Mark Kantrowitz, which is more than any class before it.

With students taking on more and more debt each year, it is important for them to know some basic facts about student loans. Here are five things to know.

Know What is Owed: A common mistake students make is not keeping up with their student loan balances and interest rates. The amounts slowly add up, and before students realize it, they are borrowing more than they will be able to feasibly pay off with their projected starting salaries. For students to see exactly

how much they owe, they can visit the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) at www. nslds.ed.gov to view any federal loans borrowed under their name and social security number at all schools attended. To access NSLDS, students must use their FSA ID that is otherwise used to file the yearly FAFSA form.

Know the Loan Servicer: Every student who received federal student loans were also assigned a loan servicer by the U.S. Department of Education.

Some of the common loan servicers are NelNet, CornerStone, Navient, and Fedloan.

Students can find out who services their federal loans by logging into NSLDS. Students should visit their loan servicer’s website, create an account, and stay updated on any messages or updates from the loan servicer. Students may opt to pay any accruing interest while they are still in school.

Know the Difference Between Federal and Private Loans: Most students have federal or private loans or a

combination of both. Federal loans are in the student’s name without a co-signer and provide students with low, fixed interest rate loans with flexible repayment options. There are two types of federal loans; subsidized loans or unsubsidized loans. For direct subsidized loans, the federal government pays the interest on the loan until students graduates. Direct unsubsidized loans accrue interest as soon as soon as the loan is dispersed. The student is responsible for repaying their federal loan six months after they graduate, stop attending or become a half-time student.

Private loans are loans students have typically taken from a bank, credit union or state agency. The loans typically have variable interest rates, interest accrues while in school, students might need a cosigner and the payment terms may be less flexible than federal loans.

Know Estimated Monthly Payments: While federal loans are more flexible than private loans when it comes to repayment, it is still important for students to understand how the different payment plans will look and how long it will take to repay the loans. Federal Student Aid provides a loan repayment calculator that estimates repayments based on students’ actual loan information such as balances and the interest rates. The calculator breaks down repayment into the seven types of repayment plans, the first and last monthly payments, total amount paid, projected loan forgiveness and how long it will take to repay the loans. Keep Searching for Scholarships: Students commonly think that once they are in col-

lege, scholarships are no longer important or available, but it is quite the opposite. Many outside scholarships students received before college may not be continuous for all four years and therefore the cost of attending college will increase after freshman year. Keeping that in mind, there are less scholarships available for college students than there are for high school students, so continue to search online for any new scholarships that may have appeared throughout recent years. Also, take advantage of SNHU’s Named and Endowed Scholarship program and apply to everything students are eligible for. Each scholarship requires a brief essay and opens in January and are due in March each year.

With these five tips in mind, students will be better prepared for student loan debt and also be more aware of the active steps they should be making to reduce that debt as well. While these steps do require research and time, the more time spent will, literally, payoff in the end.

On October 19, the Southern New Hampshire University Student Government Association (SGA) hosted the Town Hall Panel in Walker Auditorium, an event dedicated to bringing information directly to the SNHU Community from a variety of SNHU leaders.

Moderated by Dean of Students Heather Lorenz, the evening featured top voices from all across campus including President Paul LeBlanc, Provost Patty Lynott, Director of Residence Life Shannon Brown, Associate Dean of the School of Business Andy Lynch, Dean of the School of Education Ray McNulty, Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences Steve Johnson, Director of Online

Throughout the evening, the discussion covered a broad and wide range of topics, directly answering questions and concerns brought forward by those in attendance.

Among the first questions brought forward by the audience was, “What is the purpose of the SNHU Arena?”

President Paul LeBlanc responded, providing insight into the decision both from the marketing possibilities, as well as more altruistic ones.

“The purpose is, on one level, simply marketing the university’s name, building our brand,” said LeBlanc. “When we looked at it, they presented an amazing amount of data, [a] really well done, like surprisingly detailed level of data that showed us that their mar-

keting footprint is throughout the Northeast, and we wanted to make sure that we were reaching students increasingly in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut.

So we looked at the number of impressions, the number of hits on their website, the fact that every single ticket they print says SNHU Arena, it was just a really good brand building opportunity… and the primary reason.”

LeBlanc continued, describing their intentions attached to the naming rights that were not directly related to the branding aspects.

“The second piece,” he said, “was that we would do some events there… We also use our building to get really low cost tickets to make really large swaths of tickets available.”

LeBlanc shared that in the past, this ability to purchase tickets in bulk and for a low price, had enabled the

university to provide a local elementary school the ability to see Disney on Ice. These schools witness high poverty rates and this ability to give back has been made possible with this deal.

Another key topic brought to the attention of the panel is one a little closer to home and on campus: Kingston. Director of Residence Life Shannon Brown shared some insight into the progress and blueprints of the upcoming residence hall. “There will 382 beds in the building, and there will be mostly doubles and some singles,” Brown said. “The rooms will be in clusters, so a group about 16 students will be in close proximity to a close, shared bathroom and then one single use bathroom.”

Brown went on to describe how there will be a fireplace, multipurpose spaces, a kitchen for the building a

game room, designated classroom with an exterior entrance and more study space.

The following discussion also included the changing policies regarding meal plans, how students can now select whichever plan they prefer, the inability to get meal plan refunds as a result, as well as a wide range of other SNHUrelated topics.

The evening empowered the SNHU Community to ask questions and enabled those answers to be immediate, synchronous and direct.

Michelle Fortin, SGA vice president, shared her thoughts on the event’s purpose. “The importance of the Town Hall panel is for students to be able to share their opinions and questions for campus.

"Having that direct face to face contact and getting the direct answers from the direct source is so important for students to feel heard.”

Each year, under the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (The Clery Act), all colleges and universities that receive federal financial aid are required to maintain and disclose information, data and statistics regarding crime on and near their campuses.

Each year, this information is collected and released in a formal report at the start of October, covering the reports from the previous year.

Previously, The Penmen Press released our annual infographic covering and displaying this information for ease of consumption for the SNHU Community. Since then, we were able to meet and discuss this data with key faculty members and SNHU leaders to gain more insight into the 2016 statistics and reports.

Speaking with Jay Tifone, DIrector of Community Standards, he shared that, while the Clery Report does not denote time of year for referrals and violations, the Conduct Office does track the

time of year and notes a consistent pattern. “The number of violations is always highest in September,” Tifone said.

“Incidents decrease throughout the semester, with a spike around Halloween and the last week of classes. The number of incidents bumps up the first week of spring semester, then settles down for the rest of the term.”

Officer Jim Winn, itle IX coordinator for University College stated that with this report, there is an increase in transparency, both for current students and for potential ones. “One of the main purposes [of the Clery Act] is really so that when families and students are picking where they want to send their child to school that they can make an informed decision.”

One key aspect that both Winn and Tifone highlighted was the rise in drug referrals and violations in the past three years. According to the reports from the past three years, 2014 saw 17 drug referrals, 2015 saw 68 and this past 2016 saw 114; as compared to alcohol referrals which have been relatively comparable throughout the past three years (The Clery Report, 2016). Tifone commented a hypothesis that suggests that “our drug-relat-

ed referrals may be related to the legalization of marijuana in neighboring Massachusetts and Maine, as well as the approval of medicinal marijuana in New Hampshire and decriminalization of marijuana across much of New England.”

Another key aspect of the report are the sections focused on Title IX and the Violence Against Women Act. According to SNHU’s website, “Title IX of the Educational Amendments of 1972 protects individuals from sex discrimination in educational programs and activities at institutions that receive federal financial assistance. Southern New Hampshire University is committed to providing an environment free from discrimination on the basis of sex. Sexual harassment, which includes sexual violence, is a type of sex discrimination and is prohibited under Title IX and by the University.”

The primary focuses in Clery reporting, that most people tend to gravitate towards analyzing are the numbers sexual misconduct.

non-forcible,” but rather predominantly into “rape” and “fondling.”

Between 2015 and 2016, numbers for reported rapes have increased from 3 to 5.

Brooke Gilmore, Director of the Women’s Center shared her thoughts on this perceived increase.

“It may seem counterproductive, but when we’re doing our job better, in terms of Title IX and prevention education and outreach to students, our numbers should go up. Because what this is indicating is reports and not incidences. Because as we know from statistics nationwide, many more incidences of sexual assaults and rape go unreported than reported. So, what this trend is telling me is not that there were more instances, but that people were more aware of their ability to report and what avenues they could go through to report…

These numbers don't tell us what is happening but rather what is being reported.”

Becca Lawrence, SNHU’s Title IX Lawyer, also shared her thoughts on this, confirming that an increase of reports could be simply such: an increase in reports.

She stated that this increase has not been an uncommon trend at other universities, as “a lot of schools saw increase in reports, because we had new regulations. You change policies, you make new programming, and you push it out, and then you get more reports, because now more people know that there’s this process, this office, [and] prevention."

Many initiatives are taken throughout different corners of the university to increase awareness of the ability to report, as well as the support offered to survivors.

While the Clery Act “Annual Security and Fire Safety Report” is only released once each year, the work in all of these offices is year round.

Both Jay Tifone and Jim Winn ended, sharing the work that is done through their offices while also highlighting their purpose and intentions throughout the year.

Jim Winn discussed the importance of relationship building across campus. “We want to feel that students know they can approach us.

We’re going to help them, guide them, advise them, and support them. The only way you do that is by taking the time to create relationships.”

Similarly, Jay Tifone emphasized that “the hearing officers have worked hard to be very transparent throughout the conduct process – ensuring that students know their rights and responsibilities, understand the charges that they face and have the opportunity to present their account of what occurred. Additionally, we’ve worked hard to remember that a hearing can be an incredibly difficult experience and that a hearing officer’s kindness, support and willingness to genuinely listen all help temper the sting of accountability."

While President Trump may speak lightly of war, it’s really more of his theatrical strategy at work. His frequent reminder that he’s not ruling out military options when it comes to North Korea is a call back to an older strategy from the 1980’s. That strategy of course is to bluff effectively in the face of America’s adversaries so that way opposing nations make stupid mistakes as a consequence.

In the 1980’s it was telling the Soviet Union that the United States was in the process of developing a Strategic Defense Initiative system (SDI) that could stop a full scale intercontinental ballistic missile attack. Whether or not the initiative was feasible is a debate that’s never really ended,

but the Soviet Union believed President Reagan’s bluff and put themselves into bankruptcy by trying to outspend the United States on military investments.

Russia may still be an influential country, but the Soviet Union is an enemy from an era long gone.

Today, President Trump’s threats to reignite conflict with North Korea is already making Kim Jong Un make stupid decisions. If he can’t even maintain strong ties with China, then his ability to led North Korea will become compromised.

His frequent desire to invest in North Korea’s military will put the country’s economy even in further distress.

Every year when Halloween rolls around, kids, teenagers, adults and sometimes the elderly partake in the age-old tradition of paying homage to being afraid of paranormal forces. However, sometimes explainable phenomena are more frightening than the unexplained ones.

Take the Zodiac Killer for instance. He murdered people in a series of killings in northern California between 1968 and 1969, and is believed to have killed at least seven victims who probably never saw it coming.

Even more freaky is that this enigmatic killer loved to taunt police by writing threats in the local newspaper about who would be next until ceasing all communication in about 1974.

Facts aside though, only one truly matters: the Zodiac Killer was never caught. Yes, you read that correctly.

No one truly knows who held the identity of the killer, but what chills me thinking about this dilemma is that in all manners of practical thinking, the killer could be anybody.

We tend to see people how we want to see them. The killer could’ve been a local shop owner, a parent, a teacher, a sibling, heck maybe even a choir boy.

No one knows.

In a way, the Zodiac Killer represents the skeletons in our closets we all try to hide. Everyone has secrets they try to keep locked inside. One secret every human being hides is that even the nicest among us can commit terrible deeds.

Whether that’s due to the balance of good and evil within

the soul or long forgotten primal urges of an early stage of evolution, evil is as natural as good.

The Zodiac Killer represents a very troubling notion, that notion being that humans can commit one of the gravest sins imaginable and get away with it without a trace. For decades and

decades, common people and authorities alike attempted to discover the identity of the Zodiac Killer, but it was futile.

His ability to get away with his crimes led people to become paranoid and very few humans are as dangerous as a paranoid one. Rationality is the major

force that separates humanity from beasts. When humanity loses that, let’s just say it’s not a ghoul, zombie, werewolf, alien, etc. you’ll have to worry about this Halloween.

Instead, you might want to worry about your next-door neighbor. Just to be safe.

President Trump’s demands towards the Chinese government that it does more to curb the threat posed by its ally has paid off, since China has drastically reduced the amount of coal it imports from North Korea. This fact is significant to North Korea as coal imports are the country’s biggest source of foreign currency.

“No matter how much people don’t like him, he has extracted more cooperation out of China than any of his predecessors,” Sun explained to the Business Insider publication.

On the world stage, the situation with North Korea has without a doubt reached a boiling point. Whether it’s coverage of the name calling between President Trump and Dictator Kim Jong Un, or anxiety about the possible threat of nuclear conflict, the North Korean situation concerns every citizen of the world.

To be fair, President Trump’s handling of the north Korean situation hasn’t been as disastrous as other media outlets may want to claim. Granted, his strategy of fiery rhetoric and threats to totally destroy the North Korean nation does come across as harsh, but harsh action is what’s needed dealing with a leader like Kim Jong Un, the dictator of the self-declared hermit kingdom.

Yun Sun, a senior associate at the Stimson Center, a D.C. – based think tank, explained to Business Insider about how Trump’s actions have changed the course of the situation.

“He’s changed the momentum on the issue,” she explained to the Business Insider publication.

She’s far from wrong. Due to the awareness of the North Korean situation that Trump’s dialogue has brought, the international community has

ever, credit must be given when it’s due, and so far his handling of the North Korean situation is not as apocalyptic as mainstream media outlets make it out to be.

Hopefully once Kim Jong Un is backed into a corner where dialogue with the free world is his only option, President Trump will use that opportunity to negotiate North Korea’s reunification with South Korea and doesn’t commit the mistake the allied powers made when dealing with Germany after World War One. That possible moment will be the deciding factor in if he’ll take advantage of progress made or squander it and prove mainstream news outlets correct.

What people should be afraid of is that pursuing foreign policy objectives becomes an excuse to ignore problems at home, something which unfortunately is a common trend in both Democratic and Republican administrations of ages past. Being a candidate who portrayed himself as a fiery populist who wanted to take focus away from international issues and focus more on domestic affairs, President Trump could potentially become a foreign policy president in the manner former president George H.W. Bush became, which is not ideal.

America will not be able to be an adequate leader of the world if it can’t even heal itself.

Is “Happy Death Day” even a horror movie? The short answer is no. You can expect to be terribly disappointed when you see that the film turns out to be completely the opposite: a comedy/suspense film.

“Happy Death Day” tells the story of a young college student called Tree, a selfish sorority girl who gets brutally murder on the night of her birthday. The whole idea of the movie is that Tree will keep dying over and over again and her day will keep repeating (for some inexplicable and weird reason) until she finds her murderer.

(Minor Spoiler ahead) One might expect to find the reason for her repeated murder in this review.

Well, don’t expect to get one if you decide to sit for an hour and 36 minutes in the movie theatre looking

for it. The truth is: it really is a waste of time. The movie absolutely fails to answer the main and most important question in the entire film. One would expect the murderer or the smart guy of the movie to have the answer to why this keeps happening to Tree, but they don’t. There is no logical or supernatural explanation given in the movie.

Apparently, we are not getting our answer to this big question until director Christopher B. Landon releases the sequel. Although, I wouldn’t really get that excited about it. Sure, the film had made a great start in the Box Office on top of “Blade Runner” and the “Foreigner”. But all that glory is going to last but a moment.

The performance delivered by Jessica Rothe and the rest of the cast isn't something to complain about; they actually deliver great performances

throughout the movie, but the plot doesn’t really help.

Not to mention the murderer’s motive for Tree’s suffering, although being in some way “realistic”, it ends up being a little bit silly.

“Happy Death Day” surely keeps viewers entertained by being a mix between “Scream”, “Ground-

hog Day” and “Scary Movie,” but it fails miserably at trying to scare the audience in order to make it into the horror category.

The movie is more a comedy/suspense kind of film, which is something that will definitely disappoint horror fans who expect to see something that

makes them scream or jump off their seats. However, I would highly recommend going to see the movie if you want to hang out with friends or you are just looking to kill some time, but don’t watch it expecting to have nightmares tonight because you surely aren’t going to get them from this.

“The Beers,” a track from six years ago (Encore, night is almost over, I'm bored, wanna leave/ It felt good before but now it's getting older, 'Cause there's no more empathy). Musically, the heavy guitars and thick synths create the sound the band were striving for on their last album.

The Front Bottoms create some of their most complex arrangements yet on “Going Grey.” “Vacation Town,” a song where singer Brian Sella compares himself to a resort during the off-season, begins as an acoustic rocker and introduces electric instrumentation, guitar solos, trumpets, pianos, and even drum machines. All of it flows together in a way that feels familiar with an undoubtedly pleasant polish.

While “Going Grey” is the sound of progress, not every experiment hits. Most

The newest record from New Jersey act The Front Bottoms has landed a far cry away from the basements and bedrooms that gave the band life. The band has returned with new sounds, a new perspective, but also the reassurance that it’s going to be okay, the same boys are still there underneath.

The best descriptor for The Front Bottoms has always been something along the lines of “folky pop punk,” but hearing the synths and drums that usher in opener “You Used to Say” give a new listener no indication of this.

Previous to “Going Grey,” the band put out their first “major” label record on Fueled by Ramen, the same label hosting bands like Twenty One Pilots, Panic! At

the Disco, and Fall Out Boy. That record was the sound of growing pains; the newness of more expensive production techniques clashed with the band’s DIY ethics and the result was a band unsure of who they wanted to be.

“You Used to Say” is admittedly off-putting for longtime fans but necessary to set a different tone for the record to come.

On “Going Grey” the band shares a new perspective. The band has made a name for themselves by writing about the insecurities of your late teens and early twenties. Now they can look at the hollow feelings behind those bad relationships and binges in past-tense, with the wisdom only time can bring.

In this way, “Grand Finale” is the culmination of this change. It looks back on those parties sung about in

The sequel to the 1982 neo-noir classic, “Bladerunner 2049” is an intriguing, thought-provoking, sci-fi ride.

It reels you in and takes hold with its stimulating ideas and captivating imagery. Director Denis Villeneuve breathed new life into an already established world with new characters and an intriguing story that doesn't feel like a retread of the past.

In the future, the LAPD now uses special officers called Bladerunners to track down and destroy rogue artificial humans known as replicants. The replicants are bioengineered humans, meaning they are not androids, but essentially fabricated people.

After a blackout causes the loss of all online records, the LAPD begins targeting the older replicants for “retirement”.

After a while, newer replicants are made to hunt down the older models.

One of those replicant Bladerunners named KD9-3.7

(Ryan Gosling) ends up in the middle of a conspiracy of replicants giving birth, which was previously impossible. Knowing that if news of this replicant child got out a war could start, thus “K” is entrusted with eliminating it.

The desolate world traversed as K searches for this impossible child is both futuristic and grounded at the same time. As all the hustle and bustle of life goes on around K, it begins to feel like a window into the future and not just some arbitrary vision of it.

Roger Deakins cinematography is the real stand out in the film. Each scene feels carefully crafted to evoke the tone of a grueling future. The way the camera lingers on simple things, like water streaming across a window or watching the snow fall, felt impactful and let all your thoughts sink in.

Jazz Quintet Shines

fectly displays a replicant going from an emotionless robot into a dazed confusion as everything falls to pieces in front of him.

The acting by the entire cast is fantastic. Jared Leto, Sylvia Hoeks, Ana de Armes and Harrison Ford reprising his role as Rick Deckard. The entire cast works perfectly together and helps make everything feel real.

All the action feels like it hits you right in the gut with every strike. Every fight scene feels lethal and the blood and gore present throughout the film reinforce the frailty of humanity.

Though the droning of the score does fit with the general tone, it goes against the pace of the action scenes. A little more variety in music would be better, but it doesn't destroy the experience.

In the end, “Bladerunner 2049” is a fantastic piece of cinema that manages to balance style with substance creating a satisfying and narratively fresh addition to an ever-growing sci-fi genre.

The talk of the music department had recently been of the upcoming jazz performance by the Taylor O’Donnell and Chris Klaxton Quintet. New music professor Paul Santerre, who has seen the Quintet numerous times before, said “These guys are pure players. They’ve dedicated their lives.” On Wednesday, October 4, the Quintet didn’t disappoint.

SNHU students and faculty filled the upstairs of the dining hall for the 7 P.M. performance.

The group eased into things with a soft instrumental, excluding Taylor O’Donnell on vocals.

Chris Klaxton shined immediately with his cool playing style.

Each player present, drums, bass, piano, and trumpet, all had solo time and the chemistry amongst the members was apparent. I asked the accomplished drummer of the Quintet, Less Harris Jr., about how the improvisation sounded so natural, and how the band makes that happen. “We all know the form of the tunes, but

Afterwards, Taylor talked about the inclusion of newer tunes and their importance.

“It’s about picking material that already has its foot in the tradition and also shows where jazz is going.” The modern setlist was appreciated by the younger crowd, who hummed along and offered regular rounds of applause throughout the performance.

Despite being the big names of the group, Taylor O’Donnell and Chris Klaxton didn’t override the performance. When not actively playing, each would walk to the side of the crowd and nod appreciatively, as if another member of the crowd.

Live Your in Nightmares “The Evil Within 2” Troy Robinson Staff Writer

Bethesda decided to treat fans of the first “Evil Within” to a sequel. This sequel remained under the radar until its announcement, coming as a shock to fans. “The Evil Within 2” was revealed during 2017’s E3 Conference held in Los Angeles. Fans couldn’t wait to immerse themselves back into Bethesda’s world of survival horror and ammunition conservation.

Bethesda even reintroduced old fan favorite enemies, like Safe head and Rebirth Laura, and have easter eggs hidden throughout the game that relate to other titles Bethesda has produced also produced.

Overall, the game was

great. It begins a few years after the events of the first game. The player reprises their role as Sebastian Castellanos, and runs into familiar faces from the last game as well. This time, a group by the name of Mobius has recreated the system used by the main antagonist in the “Evil Within”, Ruvik,. What’s even more intriguing is that, in order to power this new system, this government group has decided to use Sebastian’s daughter, Lily.

The game itself felt great overall. It’s slow to start, but picks up around the halfway point. The combat is the same from the first game, and feels just as smooth.

One thing that I didn’t like too much was that the game has an open world environ-

other, but the player, as Sebastian Castellanos, remains as the problem to them all.

The flow of the story is concrete and this game is much longer than its predecessor. Based on the ending, which will not be spoiled here, there is easily room for another entry into the series.

PENMEN ABROAD GET A JUMP START ON YOUR SEMESTER ABROAD

In the spring of 2017, senior Aaron Yellin did something he had always dreamed of doing.

He went to Italy and studied at Florence University of the Arts (FUA).

Yellin is a culinary major and thought that it would be incredible to study in such a beautiful place. He described his trip as “the best experience you will ever have.”

Yellin arrived early to participate in a week-long early start program that FUA offered, which gave him the opportunity to travel and adjust to being away from home, prior to the start of classes. In one week, he

Florence University of the Arts (FUA), located in Italy, offers students studying abroad there an opportunity to arrive a week before classes start. This early start program gives all students involved a full week to get ahead with adapting to their new surroundings.

Breana Diaz, a fashion merchandising and management major, is currently spending the first semester of her senior year at FUA. She arrived a week early with a group of other students, participating in the program that is an actual class and worth three credits.

When asked to describe what her experience was like, Diaz said, “we started in Rome and spent about two to three days there, then ventured to the countryside of Lazio and Tuscany and ended in Florence.

Each day was full of events, basically 8 a.m. - 8 p.m.”

Each day throughout that week is full of guided tours and opportunities to get students adjusted to life in another country. Diaz described this week as “an adjustment period to Italy.”

Although this is a class, it’s

clear that the instructors who are a part of this program wish to see students reflecting and learning more from their experience abroad.

“After the day was over, our instructor would send out questions from the day and from the reading we were doing and that was our journal,” Diaz said. “At the end of the course we had to send in our final reflection.”

Throughout her tours and reflections, Diaz learned about the Colosseum, Vatican City, the Trevi Fountain and so much more. Not only did she learn more about the culture and history of Italy, she has also made close friends because of her first week there.

“It helped build community because being with this group of students a week before everyone else made us close,” Diaz said when asked about the benefits of getting a jump start on her study abroad experience. “It created close bonds and you learn so much.”

When asked if she would recommend this program to other students, Diaz said, “100 percent. It is worth all the walking, in my opinion, [because] you just delve right into the culture and if I was given the chance, I would do it all again.”

personal benefits of studying abroad traveled to eight cities. These cities were all located in Italy and in order he visited Rome, Vatican City, Caprarola, Viterbo, Orvieto, Torgiano, Perguia and Assisi.

“When you first get there, it is a whole world of difference,” Yellin said. “It is a huge culture shock. However, after the first month you begin to pick up the culture and develop a sense of more of a local than a tourist.”

According to Stefano Parenti, SNHU’s study abroad director, “studying abroad becomes mainly a personal experience, the most transformative and learning opportunity for any university student.”

The more time that is spent in a place allows for a longer amount of time to explore and discover the different cultural aspects within it. Learning a language is a large part of this.

In general, it is useful to know more than one language, and it is likely those students

will pick up some phrases or dialects while living in a foreign place. “This can be beneficial back at home for getting a job in a global market,” Yellin said.

Study abroad is a useful program that SNHU offers to students that are interested in learning in a new environment and immersing themselves in a culture.

“Each new generation creates hope for a better future and this begins with expanding horizons and getting more awareness on what is going on throughout the world,” Parenti said.

SNHU tries to make studying abroad an affordable option for students. “It was almost the same cost as my previous semester at SNHU was after housing and all the extra things on the bill,” Yellin said.

In addition, the experience allows for exploration of the self as well as another country.

“It's taught me to be financially

independent and work with a budget,” said Morgan Lenko, a SNHU senior studying at the University of Limerick this semester.

Just like Lenko, Stephanie Anderson, another senior attending the University of Limerick, notices the difference between spending an entire semester abroad and visiting while on vacation.

“When you just visit a country, you see the top sites, eat at the famous restaurants, and only see some of the culture,” Anderson said. “Actually living in Ireland, I’ve been able to see some not as popular sites, eaten at restaurants and pubs only known to the locals and me[e] t people who actually grew up here and know the country and its culture.”

Another benefit of spending a semester abroad, according to Anderson, is that it has allowed her to view her own culture from a distance and in a new

light.

Anderson isn’t the only SNHU student who has benefited from the cultural experience abroad. “Studying abroad has opened my eyes to culture in a way that I would have never experienced in a classroom,” junior Sarah Schoenbeck said.

Schoenbeck is studying at the Universidad Viña del Mar this semester. “I've made memories that I'll carry with me for the rest of my life. Especially coming here as the only person from SNHU, I've become a more independent person and my traveling and navigating skills have heightened incredibly.”

Through studying abroad, students are exposed to the world around them in a way that isn’t possible while staying in a home country.

After they return home on Wednesday, October 18, when they will play host to their rivals Assumption College.

Men’s soccer wrapped up homecoming sporting events Saturday night under the bright lights of Larkin Field.

Sophomore Louka Masset (Paris, France) and junior Alex Satrustegui (Pamplona, Spain) each fired goals to lift the Penmen to a 2-0 win over in-state rival Franklin Pierce. Going into the second half, the score was tied at zero-a-piece.

Masset, however, shatered the scoreless deadlock in the 71st minute when he flicked a header into the top-right corner of the net off a pass from sophomore Romain Daniellou (Brest, France). Less than three minutes later, Southern New Hampshire struck again when sophomore Chaney

Nash-Gibney (South Burlington, Vermont) delivered a long cross from the right into the left side of the shooting box, where junior Claude Diesse (Broussard, Quebec) headed the ball back across the box to Satrustegui, who finished struck the ball into the right side of the net to make the score 2-0.

Masset’s goal was his fifth of the season and seventh of his career, while the strike for Satrustegui was his 11th of the year in his first year with the Penmen team.

SNHU is on fire and has now won three straight matches.

They return to action Wednesday, October 18, when they play host to Bentley College in a match that will air live on FOX College Sports. Fans are also encouraged to wear white as part of the Penmen White Out.

They, like the women, faced the Purple Knights of Saint Michael’s College. They had no trouble at all bringing down the Purple Knights in a 9-0 shutout.

Van Biezen made little work of Foley and Work, each posting 6-1 6-1 victories at number 2 and number 5 singles, respectively. At number 3 singles, Miguel Marreiros earned a 6-2 6-2 win over Maher. Aubron and Reichentahl were also victors at respective number 4 and number 6 singles.

Aubron came up with a 6-1 6-3 win over Allen, while Reichentahl topped Remillard 6-1 6-0.

The Penmen are 3-0 in preseason action. They will return to the courts in the spring for their seasonal competition.

Over on Larkin Field, the field hockey team faced the fierce Skyhawks of Stonehill College. The Penmen held a 3-0 lead, but four unanswered goals in the second half would lead unbeaten Stonehill to a 4-3 win.

Senior Trisha Luis (Lowell, Mass) scored for the fifth time in six games when she found the back of the net in the 13th minute, giving the Penmen a 1-0 lead.
