Users of Fintech know that although finances can be a very dry topic, making the information instantaneous, appealing and unique is what keeps users interested. New apps are constantly being released in the Fintech community that have smart features that make them beneficial and time-saving for users. Here are a few of the newest: Lemonade: Lemonade is a Fintech app that launched in 2016 and helps users get home owner’s insurance or renters insurance.

The app specializes in making the insurance process quick, and

getting a quote literally takes minutes.

The record time for paying for a claim is three seconds. Lemonade’s innovative and quick technology is becoming more and more popular among users by saving them time and money.

Mint: Mint is a personal budgeting manager so users can know where they stand on all financial platforms. Whether users have several savings accounts, checking accounts or credit cards from different financial institutions, all the balances and information can be linked together with Mint.

Users will never wonder how much money they have again.

With this app they can see exactly where their money goes and

where they can cut back on spending to save even more money.

HoneyDue: HoneyDue is an app that makes combining finances for couples easier. This is a free tracking and budgeting app that allows couples with cross accounts to get access to each other’s spending habits more easily than before.

Couples can comment on the other’s transactions and manage bill reminders together. This creates an easier way for couples to stay on track of their combined spending habits and financial goals.

Along with these Fintech apps, there are many more on the market for any financial need or question users might have.

Technology and Aeronautics (CETA) is welcomed to campus as SNHU’s latest initiative to expand their STEM programs.

In Spring of last year, Nashua’s Daniel Webster College (DWC), a well-known engineering institution, faced a crisis that caused the college to face both the loss of their accreditation and bankruptcy. SNHU stepped in to save the university, acquiring most of the staff, students and programs.

Dr. Bo Kim, Chair of CETA’s Computer Science department, is one of many faculty who made the transition to SNHU. “We felt the support that SNHU was providing us over at DWC… Many students made

the transition and they seem to be happy with their decision,” said Kim. Students and faculty have been spending the past month settling into their new spaces.

CETA aims to deliver their students, ranging from majors in engineering and computer science all the way to air traffic control, cutting-edge education relevant to today’s markets.

Dr. Ghanim Aljumaily, Chair of CETA’s Engineering Department, spoke of the fundamentals CETA was founded under.

The global state of media

As journalists, it becomes natural for us as an organization and as individuals to consider ourselves agitators. Troublemakers. Speakers of truth to power and students with a responsibility we did not think our university careers would afford us.

While many of us don't have any intention of going into journalism or media professionally, “university newspaper” has become a pseudo-profession which we accept with open arms.

We like to think that with an organizational constitution, a slew of First Amendment rights and the support of university faculty and staff, we are paving the way for change.

We, as a newspaper, find ourselves in conversations where we are asked to comment on what it means to run a student newspaper, what the state of journalism will look like in the future, what we as budding

professionals and citizens are doing to promote or combat that. We have these conversations readily, developing stock phrases about the importance of citizenship and participation, about rights and responsibilities, about censorship and freedom.

In just this year alone, due to the political and social climate, we have been included in these conversations often, both in professional settings and in our day-to-day developing of what it means to write for The Penmen Press.

What these conversations previously have been missing, however, is the acknowledgement of how "bubbled" they truly are.

The Penmen Press recently had the opportunity to speak with the East Asian Delegation on Journalism during their tour of media outlets spanning the Eastern Seaboard. This conversation enlightened members of our staff to the knowledge that,

when it comes to media ethics and law, we are incredibly fortunate and privileged.

We are empowered by the First Amendment, we are, ultimately, supported by our government and our university, and our various discussions surrounding freedom of the press hinge on an important and operative word: Freedom. As such, it becomes imperative that media ethics and law do not become something we think of only in terms of our university and the country, but of the world. We are privileged. We have an immense power. While maybe not future journalists, we are journalists now, and it is critical that we recognize that we do not act or write alone. We are a small but important part of journalism and media, and we are given a system to be such.

So read widely, and globally.

And know how miraculous, empowering and humbling it is to have the power to do so.

Aljumaily’s experience comes from many different backgrounds.

He’s worked with NASA on both the Mars Rover and the Cassini missions, but also spent time as Iraq’s ambassador to Japan and Saudi Arabia. He and CETA’s dean, Jim Smith, bonded during their diplomatic tenure over a mutual desire to improve America’s

education system.

Gaynelle Swann, Associate Dean of Academics at CETA, shares this desire to improve education. Much of her job is to develop and improve CETA’s programs.

“We’ve noticed some of the gaps in our curriculum as it relates to being responsive to industry standards. We’re interviewing various industry representatives across a wide array of industries to make sure the program we’re building and the vision we’re looking to realize are in line with what industry needs for our graduates.

We’re looking at shifting some of our teaching in specific disciplines as well as developing concentrations that will allow our students

to go in depth in those areas,” said Swann.

Most currently, Swann is looking to improve CETA’s electrical engineering programs. This means splitting into two programs, electrical engineering and computer engineering. Her philosophy is to allow students as much flexibility as possible to learn what interests them the most.

“In my conversations with [students], they love it here. It’s an exciting space. The transformation from a run down warehouse [at DWC] to CETA, with the new labs, equipment, and new techniques we’re bringing into how we deliver instruction is pretty exciting,” said Swann.

SNHU unites to Take Back the night

The Deborah L. Coffin Women’s Center held the eighth annual Take Back the Night march on September 27 on the Green Space.

Organized over the course of two months, Take Back the Night is an international event and non-profit organization with the mission of ending sexual assault and domestic violence in all forms.

Brooke Gilmore, director of the Women’s Center, commented on the goals of the event and others like it..

“It is about reclaiming spaces, demonstrating power as a community, as individuals,” Gilmore said. “This is a really important event to come together as a community under this important issue to demonstrate what our values are and demonstrate and what our commitment is to keeping this campus safe for everybody.”

Co-sponsored by CAPE, Student Government Association (SGA), Generation Equality, Multicultural Student Union, Radio SNHU and the Wellness Center, Take Back the night began with performance from spoken word poet Olivia Gatwood while other events occurred including sign making and t-shirt decorating for the Clothesline project.

Gatwood’s set covered topics such as sexual assault, as well as other aspects of womanhood. Her primary focus for these events, she said, is education. “I think sexual assault is an epidemic on college campuses, and a big reason it’s an epidemic is because of a lack of education and understanding about what sexual assault looks like, what rape culture is

It is October which means it is on-campus interview season. On-campus interviews are something that all SNHU students should utilize if possible. On-campus interviews are where students have the opportunity to meet with employers for an interview directly on campus.

The Vietnam Memorial Traveling Wall has relocated temporarily to Southern New Hampshire’s Green Space. The Wall, which arrived on Thursday, October 5, was ceremoniously welcomed by the SNHU community at 6 p.m. The Memorial Wall, which is an 80% scale replica of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C. The opening ceremony began with a musical performance put on by the Manchester Central High School choir. The ceremony continued with a number of speakers sharing their thoughts on the significance of the wall.

Senior Vice President, Strategy and University Chief of Staff Dr. William Zemp was introduced to the public and recognized for his leadership roles in the United States Army as well as various other contribution during his service.

“I am proud to be a veteran on a day like this,” said Zemp.

“This Green Space is offered, for the time we are here, as a temporary hallowed ground and a respectful place where you can reconnect. Where you veterans, can teach us of what living for

Take Back the Night attendees gather after march. and how it affects people,” said Gatwood Olivia Conrad, senior and forward for the Women’s Basketball team said Gatwood’s poetry “was very powerful,” reflective of lived experience and “was able to put everything into a real life perspective.”

The march itself took place on the west side of campus a few minutes prior to 8 p.m.

SGA led the march while carrying the Take Back the Night banner.

Women’s Center student associate and senior Amy Mercedes helped plan and execute the event. “We have survivors that come in each year that are here on campus… so we need to create a space for them so they know that they are loved and supported,” said Mercedes. This message was also reflected in the speech she gave to the campus community before the march began.

Participants shared their thoughts about the event after its conclusion.

Basketball team shared that the Women’s Basketball team attends Take Back the Night every year. “We were here because we all feel strongly about this topic, and we thought that doing this together would show our support for the cause.”

Senior Elle Tibbets also commented on the walk itself and the overall feeling of the event. “Walking the route with so many people from the SNHU community was awesome,” said Tibbetts. “The turnout this year was spectacular. As leaders on campus we should be standing up for what we believe in, supporting those who feel out of options and uniting a community stronger than the sum of its parts.”

The Women’s Center and director Brooke Gilmore will continue to program throughout the semester and encourages all students to get involved. “All students are welcome in the Women’s Center, and we are dedicated to raising awareness and to making SNHU a better, safer community,” said Gilmore.

This makes it easier for both the employer and the student by having a central location where they can interview many students at once, and students do not have to leave the campus.

The Gustafson Center is great for on-campus interviews because of the new interview rooms that the building has to offer. The Career & Professional Development Center are

currently looking for students for on campus interviews for several different companies.

The Career & Professional Development Center also helps students prepare for these on campus interviews. Students can make appointments for resume help, mock interviews, tips and tricks with interviews and anything in between.

Jim Covatis, of the New Hampshire Chapter 41 Vietnam Veterans of America, also shared his thoughts on the importance of the wall. “We stand before this wall and look at the names of all of the lives that war took. Men and women, fathers and sons, brothers and sisters, each and every one.”

Recognized for their attendance were Gold Star Families that lost their loved ones in the war. Also among the crowd were Vietnam veterans that came to pay their respects to fellow soldiers.

Located in front of the wall is a field of flags to represent veterans from New Hampshire whose names were on the wall.

To conclude the evening, a commemorative wreath laying ceremony was performed by the Chapter 41 Vietnam Veterans of America. Individuals at the event were encouraged to take time after the ceremony to get a closer look at the wall and acknowledge all of those who serviced and lost their lives to the Vietnam War. “A proud soldier, sailor, airman or marine who went to war, who gave their lives, who will never again be seen,” said Covatis. “So we honor them with this wall of beauty with the names of all who did their duty.”

Restaurant Spotlight: Soul-Satisfying Barbecue Can be Found at KC’s Rib Shack Nick VonSchanzt-Ricci Staff Writer

Finding authentic Southern barbecue in New Hampshire can be challenging to say the least.

Luckily for the SNHU community, KC’s Rib Shack in Manchester has been smoking ribs and slicing brisket since 1998.

Located on Second Street, KC’s is a haven for those seeking all the barbecue classics in an ultra-casual atmosphere.

This place is not recommended for vegetarians since the star of the menu is hickory smoked meat, including spare ribs, pulled pork, beef brisket, smoked sausage and bone-in chicken breast.

Owner Kevin Cornish was inspired to open a barbecue restaurant upon taking a road trip. “A few of my friends and I heard about this place in Putney, VT. We all drove there together and it was our first experience with real barbecue.”

About five years ago, Cornish added an outdoor tiki bar for the summer months.

Cornish is always looking for ways to keep things fresh.

“We just did a quarter million dollar renovation of the kitchen last year, and I am thinking of expanding the downstairs bar.”

Despite being in the business for twenty years, Cornish does not plan to slow down anytime soon. “I’m still having a blast, and I still have a ton of ideas.”

All meats are available as a sandwich or a platter, which comes with two homemade sides and cornbread. There is also an array of specialty sandwiches such as the Cardiac Sam, which is piled high with pulled chicken, pulled pork, bacon, cheese, roasted red peppers, lettuce and garlic herb mayo.

For most customers, the most eyebrow-raising menu item is the so-called “Feedbag Shovel.”

On Wednesday, October 4 many students came to the Athletic Center to talk to 111 different employers. Some employers came from Wayfair, Target, NBC, WMUR, Coca-Cola and The Recreational Education Center to interview possible candidates for internships or future jobs in these companies. Students were asked to dress professionally and bring enough copies of their resume to show to possible employees. Starting with a shake of a hand and a simple introduction, students were able to create new relationships with what could be their future into a company.

This event was organized by the Career and Development Center at SNHU. Beth Prieto, executive director for the Career Profes-

sional Development Center said, “I hope students come and make new connections, that they are able to network with folks that maybe they didn’t have an opportunity to meet before and that they learn about jobs and companies that they maybe didn’t know about before.”

Previous to the Career Expo, the Career and Development Center organized Resume Critique Night on Wednesday, September 27 to help students prepare themselves better for Career Expo.

Employers from companies like Target attended the workshop to review students’-+ resumes and advise them in what and what not to include in them to attract the attention of the company they are looking to apply for.

As a result, students were able to attend Career Expo with an improved resume on their hands that they could show to potential employers for jobs and internships.

Another issue she is passionate about is food insecurity and homelessness. Anderson formed her passion for these causes during the alternative breaks she went on during her time at SNHU. Anderson was a big participator of the alternative break program, because coming in she knew she wanted to volunteer in community service related activities. Her older sister participated in Habitat for Humanity over spring break at her university, so she thought she’d do something similar here.

For her first alternative break, Anderson traveled to Washington D.C. The trip mainly focused on fighting the hunger and homeless situation in the nation’s capital. It was this trip that acted as the catalyst for her true passion: service.

“A lightbulb went off in my head that I had this experience, and it altered my view of my place in the world.”

After the D.C. trip, it was clear this was the type of career she wanted to pursue. She went to D.C. two more times and was program coordinator for both trips. Senior year, she was a coordinator during an alternative break program in the Dominican Republic for two weeks that focused on education and breaking the cycle of poverty.

Being a Childhood Adolescent Psychology Major, she wondered about what type of career she wanted to pursue. Instead of going down the clinical path like a lot of her classmates, she wanted to go into organizational leadership, and the organization Outreach 360 would give her that opportunity.

She commented that working for Outreach 360 in the Dominican Republic was challenging in the best way. Every day there was a purpose. Not only did she work to provide English education to students, but she got to work closely with volunteers from North America too.

“To be a part of this organization when I was 21, 22, 23, was humbling and exciting.”

She had a lot of fun living in another country and becoming connected to another culture too.

Anderson also gave some insight into what it’s like being a SNHU alumna. One major

People are sometimes all talk and no action. Beth Anderson, the Vista for the Community Center for Engaged Learning (CCEL) is not one of those people.

Her position, which is officially known as the AmeriCorps VISTA, entails a year of servicing the community at large. A large part of her job is directed towards the capacity building of nonprofit organizations to help that organization run more smoothly. As the Vista, she provides the services of program management and education about programs people have access to, while helping current programs run more smoothly.

For example, a key role of hers is helping Kelley Hobbs, assistant director of CCEL, run service learning.

In a matter of 5 years, the amount of service learning classes jumped from 5 to 30. Service learning classes operate in the classroom like regular classes, but require students to meet and volunteer at an organization once a week. Anderson has the role of the facilitator where she provides students with support during their volunteer activities.

College Access is another program she’s heavily involved with. The College Access program focuses on providing opportunities for students from underrepresented backgrounds to enter college and stay in college to keep them from becoming at risk of dropping out.

Another big initiative she’s a part of is called “Ask Big Questions”.

Ask Big Questions is a seven-question program aimed at understanding how to change the world for better, while initiating a more productive conversation that won’t cause people to shut down.

The idea is to make it apolitical and take away arguing by asking low-risk questions such as “Where do you feel at home?” or “Who is in your community”, since everyone has an opinion about those questions.

Anderson’s Ask Big Questions initiative is one of her major tasks this year. The goal of this initiative is to help establish a community through asking questions where everyone has something to say.

“It’s proven as a society we’re becoming less of an involved community,” stated Anderson.

Ideally, the “Ask Big Questions” initiative will help establish a community on campus through the process of deep conversation; however, one of the biggest challenges to a campus community is that tough questions are often asked, and people don’t feel like they know what to say, because they don’t want to be wrong. Anderson gave some insight into this dilemma.

“People shut down, and fall into more of an argument.

There wasn’t a space where we could come together and talk.”

This initiative will allow people to talk about diversity in a way that deals more with people’s experiences rather than specific viewpoints. Discussions are a big part of this initiative, and it will be interactive. The overall goal is that, in a couple of years, this initiative will encourage the campus community to come together and answer the challenging questions.

“It’s all about the fact that we’re human beings and getting to know people,” explained Anderson.

Anderson also helps run programs like Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week in November and Human Trafficking Awareness week during the Spring Semester.

Before becoming the Vista, Anderson graduated from SNHU in 2015 and went to the Dominican Republic for two years to work in an educational nonprofit. Afterwards, she thought about attending graduate school but eventually decided on joining the AmeriCorps since she loved working in a field that always had a vision and a purpose. AmeriCorps was a yearlong endeavor for Anderson.

While searching for the next part of her journey, she spoke with Elizabeth Richards, director of CCEL, and learned they previously had an AmeriCorps Vista and would welcome another one in a second. She knew it would be a perfect fit, as she loved her experience at SNHU, and she’s not shy about the fact she loves her job.

A major cause she is passionate about is education access for everybody.

“I really believe education

Graduates from other universities don’t have the same alumni experience, so SNHU alumni experience a more genuine connection with their university. Even after coming back to work at SNHU, Anderson still feels that SNHU is like a home.

Her main source of inspiration has been the people in her life. The people she works and worked with, her family and friends, are some of the many people that pushed her to reach new heights. Social issues have also inspired her to stay on the path of active citizenship.

Anderson also revealed why she chose SNHU as her college of choice.

Logistically, she knew she wanted a small school where there was more hands-on learning. Going to school that pro-

vided numerous opportunities for on- and off-campus involvement was another aspect she was looking for.

“I didn’t want to be a number, and I think about SNHU at the time six years ago and today, it still provides that community feel. They knew I was investing in them, and I knew they were investing in me.”

If she had to make the choice again, she’d still choose SNHU. Some fun facts about her are that she recently hiked the Inca trail to Machu Picchu and enjoys relaxing in hammocks.

Anderson also played golf for a year and a half, and was also a part of club field hockey before it became a Division II sport her junior year. During her time in the Dominican Republic, she also learned how to speak Spanish.

We’re entering fall once again, which means it’s once again time to break out all the standard seasonal fare. Comfy sweaters, decorative gourds, Hefe-filtered photos of leaves and festive scenery and the annual tradition of flavoring everything with pumpkin spice.

Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts (DD) have a plan this year to introduce a new festive fall flavor to compete with pumpkin spice saturating the market with other products, like Oreos. Ironically enough, they’d also be competing with themselves in that regard. I don’t see the point.

One could argue that it’s time for a new flavor. Pumpkin spice has run its course, and a change might be necessary. It’s also worth mentioning that introducing a new flavor alongside pumpkin spice would offer a better variety, and allow customers to make the choice of sticking with pumpkin spice, or trying the new maple flavor, all while still having the freedom to go back and forth between the two, or neither, if they aren’t into that.

There’s simply no need to introduce a new flavor. Pumpkin spice is inarguably the king (or queen) of fall-flavored food and drink, particularly with coffee. It’s got a rabid and ravenous

following, especially in younger generation x-ers and nearly all millennials. Putting the time and money into developing a maple flavoring, and then promoting that through advertising is expensive and unnecessary.

People are still going to choose a Pumpkin Spice Latte (PSL) over whatever maple flavored beverage Starbucks or DD can concoct.

Speaking from personal experience, I’ve tried Dunkin’s maple coffee, and I wasn’t a fan. It doesn’t blend well with the pecan flavor thrown in, and if the coffee is purchased with regular cream and sugar, the beverage falls apart on the palate. I have yet to try Starbucks’ attempt at broadening the selection, but I don’t think it will be as successful as they hope.

This is an overly dramatic scenario, but consider this: let’s say that maple really takes off, and it accrues an insanely dedicated following the likes of which are easily comparable to pumpkin spice’s fanbase. Then, as things tend to do on the Internet, a verbal war ensues and people are arguing back and forth about which flavor is better. Are PSLs dethroned?

People will fight about anything, and we don’t need beverages to be added to the list. Let everyone come together over some PSLs and reminisce about the good times before maple was even a concept.

There are so many things to love about fall, especially when you live here in New England. The foliage is a visual feast for the eyes, the crisp frigid air, snuggling in a comfy cashmere sweater and let us not forget all those delightful fall flavors.

For many individuals it is pumpkin spice season again at our local Starbucks. This polarizing coffee concoction has two camps: Those with a feverish passion that would rather give you their first born than hand over their Starbucks gold membership and those who think anyone who even thinks about sipping on a pumpkin spice latte isn’t of planet earth.

What about those of us that just want to enjoy a fall flavor in our coffee without being slapped with the label “basic b**ch”? Well my friends I have the answer! Say hello to my friend maple pecan.

Some may roll their eyes at a new addition but variety is the spice of life. If you think having a mere two fall flavors is too daunting a task to deal with then you should think about skipping Thanksgiving this year, because the variety

The twenty first century is a tumultuous time, with people of all kinds trying to pull people in all various kinds of directions. While a lot of people find themselves in college, it’s easy to get lost, too.

Prevent the dire fate of the latter by refusing to become an empty canvas.

Losing yourself is the greatest type of defeat one can experience. That’s why it helps to have a place away from your roommates

to gather your thoughts. Hint, the third floor of the library is a prime example of a place like that.

In college, socializing is often a major focus. Let’s be honest though, sometimes less time with people is a welcome treat.

While with age comes wisdom, it’s worth mentioning that in the young adult years a better way to put it would be: with college comes less alone time. On the one hand, hanging out with people can be a wonderful time. After all, everyone probably knows an individual that works hard and plays harder.

However, it becomes a dangerous road when time spent with people is used to escape being alone with oneself. Being alone in college can sometimes be impossible though, especially if you live with a ragtag group of roommates. Students should know that it doesn’t have to be that way.

If you face a situation like mine, then chances are your roommates never go home, making your college dorm or apartment away from home anything but homey. That’s why the key is to adopt a lone wolf persona. Let’s be honest, too much time with spent with roommates will make your head spin.

When adopting a lone wolf persona, don’t twhink that means making friends isn’t a priority. Instead, making friends with people that are worth being friends with, rather than going out of your way to be yes man/woman is the priority.

Being a Sophomore, I can honestly say I’ve made more friends living my life than I ever have by going out of my way to force it.

Let me be clear, there is nothing wrong with having a preferred singular style of coffee you stick to, but a lot of those individuals who participate in the act of drinking coffee daily should at least have the option to try a seasonal flavor rather than always having to stick with the same roster of flavors day in and day out.

Also, it is only a seasonal occurrence, it will not clutter the sandwich board at Starbucks forever. Before you know it, everyone will be complaining about the design of the holiday cup because somehow people will find a way to be offended by it like they always do.

We can all sit down together with a cup of Joe and celebrate the variety of the coffee landscape, from those who sip their coffee black to those who do not know they’re drinking mostly sugary foam. Adding new flavors to the Starbucks menu is simply just allowing us to enjoy one of the many spectacular aspects of fall just a little bit more.

Don’t hesitate to go against the crowd because the crowd will never go out of its way for you.

One thing that some of the fans might have some problems with is that the new CBS comedy does not really fall into the style of a traditional comedy. One particular aspect that makes us realize that “Young Sheldon” is not only intended to make us laugh is that the well-known laugh track is gone. A sadder tone, even more than the one in the original series, is planned to be added to the prequel.

There is no doubt that the first episode definitely pleases the fans showing the series has the poten-tial to become equal to or better “The Big Bang Theory.” However, the big success from the premiere episode does not justify the long way the show still has to go. For example, there was little to no character development for some of the family members. The new series also needs to come up with new material never seen before in

As long as I can remember, I’ve been a faithful “Big Bang Theory” fan since the moment the first episode aired. Nothing has made me laugh more than the stories of a young Sheldon growing up in Texas.

I couldn’t help laughing when imagining the neighbor’s chicken chasing Sheldon down the street or him constructing a giant robot out of his sister’s Easy-Bake Oven. Thankfully, we will no longer require our imagination to picture young Sheldon’s comical adventures with the new prequel series “Young Sheldon.”

With the pilot airing on September 25, the new CBS comedy narrates the story of 9-year-old boy ge-nius Sheldon Cooper as he enters public high school thanks to his extraordinary, yet unusual, academic abilities.

Ian Ermitage does an amazing job portraying the annoy-

ing and perky Sheldon Cooper; this changes though when such attitude is transferred to a 9-year-old kid, making annoyance turn into sadness towards him. As soon as Sheldon walks into the classroom, he immediately insults his professor, his classmates and those unknown to him for simple rules.

Professors show their discomfort towards her heartwarming mother over the boy genius to which Sheldon, as always, is unaware of.

Zoe Perry shares the character of the heartwarming boy genius mother with her own, Laurie Metcalf. With Zoe sharing the same attitude, voice and mannerisms as Laurie’s original portrayal, it is difficult not to receive Zoe with open arms as the younger version of the always Loving God Faithful Mary Cooper. Zoe along with Lance Barber as the boy genius father, bring excitement to those curious of knowing how was life in East Texas as the parents of the famous, yet

the original series than just using Sheldon’s intelligence and atti-tude to keep viewers’ attention.

“Young Sheldon” is in hiatus right now and will continue on November 2nd at 8:30 EST on CBS.

"Kingsman: the golden circle" is a bronze sequel

Gabriel Carrio Executive Copy Editor Matthew Vaughn released a smash hit in 2015 with “Kingsman: The Secret Service,” which earned an astonishing $414 million at the box office. As is customary nowadays, a sequel was released. “Kingsman: The Golden Circle.” The film performed better in its opening weekend than its predecessor, but the quality of the film was most certainly lower.

In Vaughn’s sequel to his spy movie spoof, returning characters Eggsy (Taron Egerton) and Merlin (Mark Strong) are tasked with connecting with their American-based cousin agency, the Statesman to bring down Poppy, and prevent her from killing every drug user on the planet.

The plot is straightforward: the protagonist loses everything, and must get help from others to take down the bad guy and save the world. Standard

action-espionage fare. Where the issues lie in this mess of a film is the writing, and the lack of focus.

When I say that Poppy is the central villain, I mean that there are too many villains to go around, and none of them hold more weight over the other.

Poppy (Moore) can’t have more than fifteen minutes of screen time, yet she’s intended to be the most intimidating source of conflict.

Poppy is not an active vil-

lain, and she only exists in one area of the film: her 1950s themed Amazon drug base. The only aspects that make her a villain are her intentions, and her aggressive personality. Everything else is carried out by her henchmen, and her two robotic dogs that run off batteries.

As villains, they play far more active roles in the film than Poppy, and they’re significantly more active. In some senses, this is blatantly sexist.

Both henchmen, one of which returning from the first film, are both fit, highly trained combatants. Poppy is a cheery, fragile middle-aged woman.

She’s not active because she can’t be, she’s a frail woman.

Along with the poor decisions when it comes to the antagonists and the writing behind all of them, the writing behind the protagonists isn’t much better.

Eggsy’s (Egerton) girlfriend, Princess Tilde of Sweden, is in the film solely to be his female counterpart. She serves no purpose other than to be his love interest and to drive him to keep her safe. As a character, she’s unnecessary and poorly

represented.

There’s unnecessary sexual conduct, put in the film only for shock and titillation purposes.

At one point, Eggsy needs to plant a tracker and microphone on Charlie’s girlfriend, and the “only way” it will work is through a very uncomfortable, crude, and unnecessary method.

Where the movie shines, and unfortunately the only time the movie shines, is in the action, which is far better this time around. The first “Kingsman” featured incredibly slick and stylish action, and “The Golden Circle” does not disappoint in that regard.

The final conflict resolution, however, is a call back to a conflict resolution earlier in the film, and unfortunately it takes away from the film. It paints the protagonists in a sadistic light that they weren’t in at any other point in the film.

As a whole, “Kingsman: The Golden Circle” is a far cry from the quality of “The Secret Service.” It appears that Matthew Vaughn forgot that Kingsman is a parody of James Bond, and took many of the ideas and jokes too far. 6/10

arts and entertainment netflick of the week: "little evil" Tyler Leighton Events Manager Having children for the first time is one of the hardest experiences for any parent, and it can be even more difficult for a stepparent, coming into a child’s life after they’ve already grown so much. Little Evil is a story of a step-father trying to form a relationship with his new stepson, with the added twist: the stepson’s real father just so happens to be Satan.

Gary (Adam Scott) just married the woman of his dreams, Samantha (Evangeline Lilly), and even though the ceremony was interrupted by a literal disaster, they’re moving in together, and he’s finally going to spend time with her six-year old son Lucas (Owen Atlas). But, after a series of “mishaps and accidents,” Gary begins to think that the Lucas may be the antichrist and starts plotting ways to kill the demon spawn.

Don’t be fooled, Little Evil is a fun, and occasionally sweet, movie about a budding relation-

ship between stepdad and stepson. Along the way, there is a healthy dose of horror element,s but Little Evil is a comedy first.

Eli Craig, writer and director of the cult comedy horror Tucker and Dale vs Evil, returns to the director's chair for another film that blends his inoffensive and genuinely fun filmmaking techniques with scary visuals and horror tropes.

In a similar vein to Tucker and Dale vs Evil, the horror elements are largely played for laughs rather than genuine terror. The film is rated TV-MA, almost entirely for the colorful and creative use of profanity throughout.

One of the funnest elements of Little Evil is Gary’s reluctance to give into the idea that Lucas could be evil. It helps that Adam Scott is playing his usual dorky leading man, a la Ben Wyatt from Parks and Recreation, a part that he’s perfected and makes him seem as though he’d be horribly outmatched by any stepchild, let alone the spawn of satan.

The largest issue that Little Evil has is the underuse of its great cast; Evangeline Lilly and Donald Faison are relegated to minor supporting roles as the skeptical mother and stepdad support group member respectively, and Tucker and Dale vs Evil star Tyler Labine appears in only one scene as an avant garde wedding videographer.

larious as Gary’s co-worker and fellow stepdad, but the film’s slower moments could have benefited from more use of the great cast of characters that were assembled.

Ultimately, even though Little Evil is a silly movie about the antichrist, it does have a very positive message about parenting. It’s difficult for stepparents and stepchildren to form strong

connection;, sometimes there are external factors, the Devil, getting in the way. But in the end, the struggles are worth it for the parent and the child.

If you’re in the mood for an October flick but still aren’t quite ready for the spooks and frights of Halloween, then spend some time watching Little Evil, a good blend of comedy and darkness.

The Killers have emerged from hiding after a five-year hiatus, and the meditation has made this collection of songs on Wonderful Wonderful some of their most personal yet.

The eponymous album opener is moody and theatrical. A silky and sexy bass-line shepherds the listener through the song in the same way lead singer Brandon Flowers sings reassurance to a motherless child. This is the first of many songs about the PTSD Flowers’s wife struggles with since being abandoned when she was young.

Following that is “The Man,” which establishes the second of the two major themes on this record. On this track, Flowers delivers cocksure lyrics of a man who thinks he’s all that ("'Cause baby I'm gifted/ You see what I mean?/ USDA certified lean"). The inyour-face disco swagger provided by the rhythm section only further drives the point home. Hidden under the sur-

face however is a man unsure of himself.

The track is divisive -- for listeners who are familiar with their usual 80’s-influenced alternative rock, it takes some getting used to. The Just Dance-era Bowie influence is palpable, but the self-awareness on display is enough to sell the track.

Flowers further grapples

with his wife’s battle with depression on twin tracks “Rut” and “Life to Come.” The former serves as a statement from his wife about her illness: “don’t give up on me, ‘cause I’m just in a rut.” I can commend the track for its subject matter, but can’t help but feel bored by the mid-tempo meandering. “Life to Come” remedies this problem with its

more varied guitar work and soaring chorus, but still falls short.

The energy The Killers have been known for has a much harder time showing itself on this album, a problem that also reared its head on previous album, Battle Born.

Whether that’s a sign of maturity or slowing down with age remains to be seen.

This problem doesn’t exist on “Tyson Vs. Douglas,” a track that should not work but manages to be the best song on the album.

The mental image of Flowers crying while watching a boxing match on TV is downright ridiculous, but somehow it’s not. Really though, this should be no surprise from the band who could once get away with the nonsense of “Somebody told me/ that you had a boyfriend/ who looked like a girlfriend.”

Flowers turns the 1990 defeat of heavyweight champion Mike Tyson into a lesson learned in the ever-present fear of failure; the epitome of machismo was able to be taken down, and Flowers is reconciling that with his own ideas of masculinity.

“Have All the Songs Been Written,” asks the album closer.

While the band has shown a tremendous growth in the maturity of their lyrics, their songwriting overall lacks the energy and spontaneity that made songs like “Mr. Brightside” hits.

The SNHU Study Abroad Office is excited to announce their new programs that will be offered this upcoming summer.

These programs will be available in Sicily, Italy and Yucatan, Mexico, and are open to all students.

When asked why the office decided to add in summer abroad programs, Stefano Parenti, study abroad director, said that it was “to allow students that, for different reasons, cannot spend a semester abroad to enjoy and benefit, at least, of a short study abroad program.”

Both of these programs are about four to five weeks long and are full of different opportunities. Not only do students who choose these programs get to spend a full month or more studying in another country, they also get the opportunity to go out and engage with a new culture.

“We believe that the engagement with differences de-

velops more awareness in terms of alternatives and different perspectives,” Parenti said.

“Most of the language classes are ‘on sight.’ This allows students to learn the basic[s] of a new language through experiential learning activities

Although the Study Abroad Office hopes these summer programs will encourage first year students to want to learn more about semesters abroad, they hope to see all students get engaged with the unique opportunities SNHU has to offer when it comes to studying abroad.

Parenti is most excited about the potential results of the summer programs. “Students that appreciate the beauty of differences, that get some foreign language skills, that develop more curiosity and start to have their own ideas about the world…once back, decide to apply for a semester.” Parenti said.

“There is nothing more transformative than spending a term overseas for their mind, personal and professional skills and much more.”

Outside of the homestay booklet Ouellette received, outlining appropriate behavior, her host family has not implemented any rules. “We are all just respectful to each other, and we make sure we communicate when we won’t be home at night or for dinner.

We all have a group chat, and we usually share what we are up to so that nobody worries,” she said.

Her and her host sister do the dishes every night though, to help their host family out.

“They are just overall a really great support system when you are alone in another country,” Ouellette said. “It’s really comforting to be a part of a family.”

The SNHU Study Abroad Office partners with five other universities that offer homestays, according to Scott Snyder, study abroad advisor.

Aside from Otago Polytechnic, the school Ouellette attends, students who study at the Universidad Viña del Mar in Chile, the Universidad de Especialidades Espiritu Santo in Ecuador, the

Universidad Nebrija in Spain and the Institute for American Universities College in France will live with a family in a homestay.

Florence University of the Arts in Italy offers both a homestay and off-campus student apartment options.

Brianna Ouellette, class of 2019, is not living in the dorms this semester. Nor is she commuting from her home in New Hampshire. She’s living in a homestay in New Zealand (NZ) with a family she had never met before. Ouellette is studying abroad this semester in a time zone that’s 16 hours ahead of SNHU, at Otago Polytechnic, located in Dunedin, NZ. Ouellette is living with a young, engaged couple and their two dogs. Her host dad is from NZ, and her host mom is from Australia. She also has a host sister, Bonnie, from Shanghai, China, who is studying abroad at Otago Polytechnic too. “She is the best host sister I could ask for,” Ouellette said. “She is funny, energetic, happy, kind and outgoing. We all get along very well.”

Ouellette enjoys learning about the Chinese culture in addition to Kiwi, or NZ, culture.

About a month before leaving the U.S., Ouellette received an email from the homestay coordinator at Otago Polytechnic with information about her family and

an email to contact them. “You fill out a questionnaire about yourself, and the school tries to match you up with a family that is best fit for you,” she said, describing how the homestay process works.

There are many perks to living in a homestay that students may not experience in student apartments. “When you live with a homestay, you get to experience real NZ living,” Ouellette said.

“You get to learn what dishes are popular; the family can bring you to do cool things around the city; they can have good suggestions on what to do.”

Three meals a day are provided to students by their host families in NZ. Ouellette says she typically eats her breakfast at home, packs a lunch or eats out and has dinner at home with her host family. “It’s really nice to all sit down and have a meal together where we can talk about the exciting things that happened in our days,” she said.

Ouellette noted some popular foods in NZ include fish and chips, sushi, cheese rolls, lamb, sausage sizzles, kiwi and marmite. Her new favorite ice cream is called Hokey Pokey, which has honeycomb pieces in a vanilla

Steady cold rain streamed down from dark, ominous clouds in the misty New Hampshire sky. A strong wind blew through Larkin Field in the crisp September air. It was a stormy fall night, and the start of SNHU’s soccer season.

On the night of the SNHU Men’s Soccer team’s home opener, forward Alex Satrustegui stood in the middle of the field with rain dripping off his face, anxiously awaiting the ball.

His white jersey was saturated; they were stiff and stuck to his body like thighs on a chair on a hot and humid day. Yet, the number 9 still illuminated off his jersey. The score was tied at one, and it was overtime. The clock was ticking. Satrustegui knew he had to come up with something big to save the game.

He stood alone on the right end of the field facing Post University’s goalkeeper. When the center kicked the ball into play, Satrustegui chased it down until it became his. With none of his teammates around to help, the game was in Satrustegui’s hands.

With the game on the line, Satrustegui made a run for it. He dribbled the ball down the field past Post defenders. The defending goalie pounced in front of him, but Satrustegui was too quick. He maneuvered the ball around the goalie’s feet, and when he knew he had the opportunity, he punted the ball.

All eyes were on Satrustegui.

Everyone stood still, holding their breath. The fans were on their feet warily awaiting what was going to happen next. His teammates stood anxiously across the field clutching their fists.

Time stood still. Then it happened. As the clock ran out, the ball whisked through the air and into the top right corner of the goal. Satrustegui netted the winning goal. He ran across the left side of the field cheering and chanting. His teammates breathed a sigh of relief before breaking into a congratulatory chant. They jumped on top of Satrustegui and patted him on the back. Everyone was ecstatic.

Penmen pride was in the air that night at Larkin Field. Alex Satrustegui saved the game.

“Getting the winning goal is an amazing feeling,” said Satrustegui. “Soccer is the thing I like most in my life, and being able to save the game and get the winning goal is amazing.”

The winning goal in the matchup against Post was just one of three game winning goals Satrustegui has scored throughout the season thus far. In total, he has captured seven goals throughout nine games. Satrustegui joins the SNHU community from Spain, where he played for the best team in Barcelona.

Last year, his Barcelonan team won its conference. At the same time, he became the top scorer in the region. While in Spain, he attended the University of Na-

varra in Pamplona for two years before transferring to the US. To find schools in America, Satrustegui partnered with a Spanish sports agency. They connected him to dozens of schools throughout the country, and he applied to almost all of them. However, there was something about Southern New Hampshire that stood out.

“I did a skype call with JT [SNHU men’s soccer coach, Josh Taylor], and he told me about the school,” Satrustegui explained. “I really liked what he was saying. He told me everything about the team, as well as the school, and it seemed like a good fit.”

Taylor was very impressed with Satrustegui during the recruitment process, and believed he would make a great asset to the SNHU’s team.

“I was impressed with his level of play,” Taylor said. “Alex was very proactive during the recruiting process and showed the traits, both on and off the field, that we look for.”

Satrustegui did not choose SNHU for its soccer program alone; he chose it because it offered the program he wanted: engineering.

SNHU merged with Daniel Webster College this year, a school known for its engineering program. If SNHU never merged with Daniel Webster, Satrustegui would not have chosen to come to SNHU. “I was really lucky to have applied when I did,” Satrustegui

said. “I had really good timing and I’m glad they have the program I want to pursue. Despite everything I like about SNHU, like the soccer team, I would not be here if they did not have the program.”

Coming to SNHU was Satrustegui’s first time in America, and he has had nothing but positive experiences. He loves that he can play soccer for one of the best teams in the northeast while also receiving a good education.

What stands out to Satrustegui about the SNHU team is how close it is. His teammates have given him a great foundation at SNHU, as well as in the US, and have welcomed him with open arms.

“Since I’m here, everyone has tried to help me, not only with soccer, but with everything,” he said. “If I have a problem or need help with something in my life, a teammate or a coach will help me, so I am grateful for everyone here.”

Coach Taylor is pleased with how well the transition process went for Satrustegui. He said that “being new to a school and team, especially as an international student, can be difficult as there is typically an adjustment period.” However, he credits the “leaders and upperclassmen who do a great job integrating the new players into our culture.”

Satrustegui said that the team is a very tight knit community. They are a close team who, in Satrustegui’s words, are “like

a family”. They partake in many team bonding activities that encourage friendships to grow. On weekends or on days off from practice, Satrustegui and the team will go to the mall or the beach, and, whenever they can, go to the dining hall for dinner.

Not only is Satrustegui blessed to be on such a great team, Satrustegui’s teammates are beyond grateful to have him.

Like coach Taylor, they believe he is a great asset to the team, both on and off the field. Teammate Kiko Hernandez (Spain) said Satrustegui is “really fast on the field, which distinguishes him from other players,” while sophomore Romain Daniellou (France) said Satrustegui is a “great person who is extremely mentally tough; he’s a great player and a good finisher.”

Although he plays to impress himself and to be the best player he can be, Satrustegui believes that you are not playing the sport right if you are not playing for the team.

“The most important thing is being a team.” Satrustegui said. “It doesn’t matter who scored, the important thing is being a team. We are doing this together.”

Alex Satrustegui is the Penmen’s top scorer thus far in the season. He is a talented soccer player with a drive to succeed.

He has demonstrated top athletic performances, shown through his gratitude toward his teammates and his ability to fight when a game is on the line.

After a tremendous performance in the men’s tennis opening match against Colby Sawyer, senior Tiago Fernandes of Porto, Portugal rallied his way into the semifinals of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Regional Championships at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on September 25.

With his strong showing, Fernandes became the first man

in program history to reach the semifinals of the tournament.

Because he battled an illness throughout the entirety of the tournament, Fernandes fell just one match short of the final. Although he played well, he feels he could have performed even better.

“I coughed the entire match,” Fernandes said. “It was a two-and-a-half hour long match. It was very competitive, but I didn’t do as well as I could’ve. If I wasn’t sick, I may have been able to pull away

with the win.”

Fernandes lost in a hardfought battle in three sets to eventual winner Matej Selecky of New York Institute of Technology. He lost the first set 6-2 before clawing back to capture the second set 7-5. Fernandes was too fatigued, however, and lost some of his mental toughness, and ultimately lost the final set 6-1.

“At this level the game is very mental, so if you’re good mentally you can make it through a lot of rounds.”

Couto finished with a time of 19:14, Coakley with 20:09, and third year Ashley Dennis (Coventry, Rhode Island) with 20:44.

The third meet of the season was held in Hopkinton, New Hampshire.

SNHU finished second out of the five teams competing (Bentley College, SNHU, Franklin Pierce University, Southern Connecticut State and SUNY Poly).

Couto had a time of 22:39 and placed first, Brand had 24:52.3 finishing ninth, Dennis had 25:03.2 finishing tenth and sophomore Emily McLean finished with a time of 25:07.6 and eleventh overall. The total time for the race for SNHU was 2:03:23. Butler has a positive outlook for the remainder of the season.

“I’m sure if we can keep everyone healthy and focused we’ll see some really good outcomes at these next few meets.”

The team is about to enter the championship part of their season and will be competing in matches on October 21 and November 4.

SNHU’s Women’s Cross Country team has partook in three races so far in their season. They performed their best in each, even when the competition was tight.

Head coach Lex Butler is confident in his team. Butler said he is “really excited about the team” and that “it takes a special, mentally tough and committed woman to be on the XC/Track & Field team.”

In their first race, the Penmen came out the underdogs, finishing fourth out of the four schools competing, with a respective score of 111. Sophomore Jill Couto (New Junction, New Hampshire) scored 15, with a time of 23:54.5.

First year student Maura Coakley (Yorktown Heights, New York) finished with a 25:06.2, and sophomore Madison Brand (Valhalla, New York) finished with 25:11.1.

The total time for SNHU during the race was 2:05:47 The second race didn’t go as planned. The meet was held at Vermont Technical Institute in Randolph, Vermont.

set, but ultimately lost 6-2 6-4.

Junior Rachel Wagner (Framingham, MA) trailed in her fifth singles match, but came out the victor after her Adelphi competitor retired due to injury.

Senior Lindsay Baum (North Salem, NY) had no trouble handling her Adelphi opponent, taking her out 6-3 6-1. With Baum’s win, the Penmen captured four wins for the match, but Adelphi

had upper hand and beat them 5-4, giving the Penmen their first loss of the season.

Following this loss, the Penmen faced another challenge at Stonehill on Tuesday October 3.

The Penmen had trouble picking up momentum throughout the course of the match, and ultimately fell 7-2 to the Skyhawks.

Women’s tennis is swinging into one of the best seasons in program history. They began strong, winning their first five matches for the first time in several years. They captured wins over Northeast 10 (NE-10) competitors Merrimack, Franklin Pierce, AIC, New Haven and Saint Anselm.

However, their winning streak was snapped, on October 1, when they faced Adelphi, the number one team in the NE-10.

The match began with doubles action. The team suffered a 2-0 deficit after second and third doubles wrapped up, losing second 8-4 and third 8-3. First doubles clawed away in a long, strenuous match before clenching it 9-8 (7-5). Although it was a sign of hope for the Penmen, they still trailed 2-1.

Sala won the lone two matches, one at number one singles and the other at number one doubles with Burns.

In addition to regular season action, the Penmen had the opportunity to partake in the International Tennis Association (ITA) East Regional Tennis Championships at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens, New York on the weekend of September 22. While most bowed out of the tournament during early rounds, Burns and Poje were forced to retire early due to illness and injury. Morais, however, earned a spot in the quarterfinals.

The Penmen return to action on Saturday, October 7 when they travel to Lemoyne.
