The Penmen Press is the first stop for Southern New Hampshire University news.

Not only can our members live their dreams of being a reporter by writing for one of our sections (News, Sports, Opinion, Arts & Entertainment and Penmen Abroad), but we also offer hands-on experience with managing our website, business

and marketing, social media, graphic design and even coordinating events.

Other opportunities include bonding events such as movie nights, our block party and Staff’s Thanksgiving, not to mention collaborative events with other clubs where you can meet new people!

Welcome to SNHU new students!

Let us be one of the first to officially welcome you to SNHU! I’m sure that you will come to see in no time that this campus is open, friendly and absolutely booming with incredible students and community.

Though you will meet countless students inside your classrooms and academic commitments, our office wanted to reach out and let you know of some opportunities outside the classroom to get to know our students better.

The Office of Student Involvement oversees our 60+ student clubs and organizations, the Student Center, Homecoming, Orientation, the semiannual Late Night Breakfast, leadership programs and many other campus tradi-

tions and activities.

The Penmen Press has created this special issue for you, and we hope that you take the time to explore these opportunities and the countless others that are on our campus!

We are the Live Action Role Playing Club (LARP) on the SNHU campus. Our mission statement is to create a world for all of our participants to interact and enjoy. With the use of costumes and acting, the E-Board wishes to create an immersive experience for all members to enjoy.

Our meeting time is currently to be decided to make sure as many members are able to attend as possible.

At our meetings, we usually discuss upcoming events and what the members want to see from us. At other meetings, we enjoy playing board games, small role

playing scenarios or video games depending on what the members wish to do that week.

Previous events that we have hosted on campus include Tavern Night and How to Host a Murder. This upcoming year, we hope to have multiple events that will be held throughout the

The Coordinators of Activities and Programming Events (CAPE) serves as the primary event planning group on campus. Our mission is to address the changing needs of the SNHU campus community through intentional programming and striving to continuously improve the quality of life for students! We focus on making our events inclusive, diverse and innovative.

During the year, some of our major events are the Major Concert, weekly BINGO, Spring and Winter Week, the Welcome Back Bash and SNHUStock.

We also do smaller DIY events, off-campus trips and host performers in the Last Chapter Pub! We focus on educating our members so that they are able to learn how to plan events whether thats done with CAPE, another club or even a job on campus.

This year, we will be

focusing on mentoring students in small groups that are able to work directly with our executive board through the event planning and execution process. CAPE wouldn’t be able to exist without our members, and that’s why we will be focusing on giving back to them even more this year.

We have great opportunities to attend conferences, plan your own events and lots of CAPE swag! CAPE is a great way to get involved on campus and create lasting relationships. If you have any questions feel free to reach out to cape@snhu.edu.

the SNHU E-Sports Teams, a brand new initiative. League of Legends and Overwatch players are encouraged to try out.

If that isn’t enough, we go on a trip every year to PAX East Boston, where all the biggest gamers come to play and hang out with others who enjoy gaming.

We meet every Friday from 6-8pm in the Corcoran Room located in the Student Center and also have events on Thursdays.

The purpose of the Environmental Club is to serve as a community resource for environmental sustainability through education, service, and awareness. Our goal is to make SNHU as sustainable as possible while creating a fun and engaging atmosphere for our members.

Last semester we completed service projects for the Arboretum on campus, made sleeping mats out of plastic grocery bags for the homeless and completed a park clean-up.

If you’re interested in games, then our club is the place to be.

The mission statement of the Gaming Club is “To provide a fun, fair, non-judgmental atmosphere for anyone of any skill level to play video games, card games, board games, role playing games, or any combination thereof.”

This semester, we’ll be having tournaments in Rocket League, Super Smash Bros. and a Fortnite Event, of course. We have so much in store for our club this year and are looking to recruit players for

hola H.O.L.A stands for Hispanic Organization for Latino Awareness.

Our club provides a safe and educational space for those interested in learning about diversity and the cultures and backgrounds of many Spanish, Hispanic and Latino nations. We also talk about some of the stereotypes and issues surrounding Spanish, Hispanic and Latino cultures.

We had a successful first year with events such as Latina Cosina.

Latina Cosina, our largest event, involved celebrating influential Hispanic women dur-

ing Women’s History Month.

In addition, we also had smaller events for the holidays. We frequently collaborate with other diversity events, such as the Illuminate dinner and the Soul Food dinner.

Our meetings usually consist of educating our members about specific countries or topics. We have traditional foods at every meeting as well.

CSA has programed a variety of activities including blind food tastings, cooking demonstrations and baking activities. However, we are constantly open to any suggestions from anyone who is interested in joining.

Last year, CSA participated in numerous events including the ninth annual Soul Food Dinner, a lively and festive celebration of culture co-sponsored by the Multicultural Student Union (MSU). CSA also pre-

pared the eats for a traditional southern barbecue that was held in the pub.

These collaborations and others led to CSA winning the Club Synergy award during the annual Leadership Awards Banquet last spring. CSA strives to continue to work with other organizations on campus to become an active part of the SNHU community and to program successful events.

Food plays a significant role in the lives of all college students.

Not only is food a valuable source of fuel, but it is also a critical component of culture, a source of inspiration and the focus of a career for many individuals. The Culinary Student Association (CSA) aspires to celebrate culinary arts and to introduce students to new cuisines and culinary techniques.

InterVarsity Christian Fellowship is SNHU’s Christian ministry group. The vi-

This past year, we hosted many events including a kick-off and end of the year barbeque, a New Years Party and a dodgeball night. We also went on a 10-day Service Trip to Baton Rouge where 11 SNHU students served in an area of Louisiana that was heavily affected by flooding in 2016. During this trip, we were able to grow closer as a group as we individually grew closer to God. Overall, we are an encouraging and supportive group that students attend to learn

more about Jesus and get/stay involved in a community of faith.

We would love to get to know you, whether you believe in God and follow him already or not. InterVarsity meets Thursday evenings at 7:00pm in the Green Center, room 102A. In the past, SGA has worked on alterations of judicial policies, improvements in residence halls, eco-friendly takeout options in the Dining Center and providing free feminine products in the women’s

restrooms on campus.

All these changes have been implemented based on the suggestions of the students at SNHU. Along with acting as a voice for the students, SGA hosts and co-sponsors a variety

of events on campus.

Each year, SGA puts on the Celebration of Light, an informative Town Hall Panel and election events. SGA also runs the Penmen Pride program at SNHU. Penmen Pride en-

with a general meeting that will happen after the Involvement Fair, and then we begin practicing two nights a week when the courts are available.

Matches take place on weekends either at SNHU or at a rival school.

Our favorite event every year is going to USTA On Campus Fall Sectionals at Harvard University, where we compete against 35 other teams in our New England Conference such as

Bowdoin, Boston University, UCONN and UNH, to name a few.

In this weekend tournament, you get free t-shirts and tennis apparel. It provides a good team bonding experience.

The top five teams get a bid to the USTA On Campus Nationals in Florida, which takes place in spring semester.

After sectionals, we compete with other teams on the weekends and usually have 5-6 matches a month

on top of our home tournament, the Penmen Classic.

Club Tennis plays tennis for fun and competitively.

We offer SNHUdents both a relaxed and competitive feel.

You can come to learn the game of tennis or come to compete in matches against other schools. No experience is necessary. You can learn the game with us and gain tips from our coach.

SGA is a student-run organization whose sole purpose is to make decisions and speak up in the best interest for the students of SNHU. We are your voice in action and without students, our organization would not exist!

Our members take suggestions, comments and concerns that are voiced by students, like you, and make appropriate changes to campus whenever possible.

The mission of the Student Veterans of America (SVA) Club is to provide military veterans with the resources, support and advocacy needed to succeed in higher education and following graduation.

SVA is a national organization formed on the premise of promoting former military service members in acquiring academic success. SVA supports collegiate chapters with a variety of services, opportunities and resources that can help veterans in their pursuit of an education.

SVA aims to create a family among SNHU veterans.

Each Fall and Spring, we volunteer at the Liberty House, which is a non-profit transitional house for homeless veterans.

We also have vet-

eran’s week during the week of Veterans Day which is a blast. Last year, we had the Moving Vietnam Memorial Wall brought right to campus.

We love to do social events and activities as much as we can.

We might be going to Mind Trek in Woburn MA, where we play with Virtual Reality

while we fight zombies or go adventuring!

In the next year we aim to further strengthen our family at SNHU to even better reflect what we have had in the military.

We meet in the veteran’s lounge in the Green Center on the third Tuesday of every month at 3:00, but plan to move the club meetings to Wednesdays at 2:00pm in the Fall.

This year, our club is working on planning and organizing some unique field trip opportunities for our members. Additionally, our chapter is hoping to attend the FBLA-PBL National Leadership Conference this June in San Antonio, Texas. During

how to snhu WATCHING SPORTS Catherine LaChance Sports Editor Welcome to SNHU, home of the Penmen!

Now that you are more familiar with the academics and culture here at SNHU, let me tell you a little bit about our sports teams and where you can watch them play.

SNHU is a NCAA Division II institution that plays in the Northeast-10 conference. We are home to eight men’s sports teams and eleven women’s teams that continuously prove to be some of the best in the region.

All home soccer, field hockey and lacrosse games along with women’s track meets will be held at SNHU’s brand new, state-of-the-art Penmen Stadium. Penmen Stadium features a track and field and

six tennis courts. The stadium also features a modern video board where game highlights and coverage will be displayed. In addition, Penmen Stadium offers food concession stands available during games.

Men’s and women’s basketball and women’s volleyball games will be held at the newly renamed “Stan Spirou Field House” at the main athletic complex next to Larkin Field. Baseball and softball games are held at their respective fields behind Windsor and Hampton Halls on the east side of campus. Men’s Ice Hockey is the lone sport played off-campus. All home games are at the Ice Den in Hooksett, which is only five minutes from campus.

time management tips Amber Khan Staff Writer As the first year of classes draw to an end of the first week, there’s a lot to take in with several different syllabi, requirements, binders, textbooks, and the mountain of homework that begins to build. How does someone manage one class, let alone six or more and find the time to do extracurriculars?

The secret to managing a successful college career, starting as a first year, is through time management.

Here little tips for using time management to your advantage to get ahead of the game.

Begin by using a planner to write down assignments when they’re assigned. If there’s a project due

in a few weeks, go into the planner and circle the due date as a reminder and make a note that the assignment is due. Using brightly colored items like sticky notes or highlighters can also work to mark down important days.

If there’s free time in your schedule, plan out how you’d like to tackle a project with a group or by yourself and set deadlines for when you’d like this to be done.

Incase just organizing classes isn’t enough, plan out your day by the hour, including clubs. Schedule out whatever time is left for a small breather, giving you the chance for a mental break or food.

If working alone doesn’t suit your style, find people within

class, or friends who also need to do homework, and find a quiet place to get together. Having others to watch your make to make sure your assignments get done can be a life saver.

On campus, there are many places like the Wolak Library, Green Center’s study rooms, or depending on the season, the Green Space.

Make a note of when certain clubs meet and try to have homework more or less done by the time the club meeting starts, so when you return from the club, you can pick up right where you left off.

Remember to relax, homework is important, but know that it will get done and this is just the beginning.

Here are some tips on how to make move in day a smooth, happy transition for the whole

family.

When finding parking at your respective dorm on campus, try to find one of the many students from organizations such as Peer Advising, who are helping first years move in, and go sign in to receive the key to your room and a trolley. Signing in with one of the many staff members helping students move in not only gives you access to the room, but taking care of the expensive, small key is an-

other step towards that sense of independence.

The trolleys are essential for the frequent trips to the car, and make going up and down the elevator an easier task than carrying in anything by hand if possible.

That being said, be warned that a U-Haul for transporting items isn’t allowed—try to fit whatever’s needed into the car, and know that there’s time to go back for items if there’s anything forgotten.

Getting settled into a dorm room is an exciting part of move in day, but it can also be the hardest. Deciding on how you’d like to face the furniture, where to put items, and making sure there’s room for everything. To ease the chance of bringing too much, pack the essentials, such as the bed sheets, the pillows for sleeping and décor, and a variety of clothes for seasons and the transitional period along with

shoes. By having the essentials, you’re then able to go back home, if needed before classes start.

Check with an RA for items that are not allowed within the dorm room, such as lighting a candle, or how many power strips are allowed in the room, or for any needs in terms of surviving the dorm life!

Remember to enjoy being away from home, and tackle the first year with confidence!

2. Attend every class. Professors take attendance. Coming to class on time and prepared shows and earns mutual respect. Don’t be the student who casually walks in three minutes late, ice coffee in hand.

Be in your seat ready to work by the start time.

3. If you need to miss a class, tell your professor before it starts. Some professorsunderstand that you work part-time, have internships, or are involved in other activities or athletics, but most believe that being a student

is your full-time job.

They expect schoolwork to come first, and think their class is your most important one. Don’t do anything that tells them otherwise!

4. Follow directions carefully. Spelling and proper capitalization counts – this is not texting!

Most professors know the tricks about late assignments – blank documents, corrupt files, forgotten attachments – that’s so 2003. Even in a class where late assignments are automatic zeros (this is not high school), turn the paper in. You might still get the zero, but it shows your professors you care about learning, not just about grades.

5. If you’re having trouble with an assign-

ment, simply ask for help! See the professors in person during office hours or right before/ after class. If you’re willing to make that effort, they’re more likely to go the extra mile for you too. If emailing the professors, try doing it during normal business hours.

6. If a class you want is full, go see the instructor. That sad puppy dog face in person goes a long way!

7. When you visit your professors, introduce yourself on a first and last name basis so they’ll know who you are. Have your student ID card with you in case you want help with your academic program.

8. Many professors have worked in the industry they teach about.

They can help you make contacts and introduce you to opportunities to learn, do internships, and find jobs.

9. Once professors get to know you, they can help you make contacts and be part of their network. This can open up new opportunities to learn, do internships, and find jobs.

10. If you have a problem with a class, see that professors first.

Most are open to discussion and want to work with you. Being proactive is more likely to lead to a happy resolution.

If that doesn’t help, see your Academic Advisor, or the Department Chair.

The Pub is one of the main hubs of life and events on SNHU’s campus. The people that work there are the same people that we all attend class with. With the Pub there’s always something going on even if it’s something as small as pool tournament.

As a Pub veteran I can say that to all the incoming students you’ll like the pub and if you happen to blow through all of your meal plan, you’ll definitely rely on the pub for the sake of snacks and drinks. This was the case for me both my freshman and sophomore year. Outside of events the pub is just a big chill spot for if you’re bored or if you want to work on homework or just talk with friends. The lights are never too harsh and the tables are big enough to gather around for a

board game, with the option of cozy booths.

You’ll meet tons of people and make plenty connections in the Pub for sure. For the soccer fans out there The Pub always puts the soccer games on when they’re aired so grab your friends and root for your favorite teams.

To the football fans out there the Pub definitely makes it their duty to put on any football game, but moreover any football game with the New England Patriots playing. The same can be said for basketball and the Boston Celtics.

Emma Sheehan Layout Editor For students bringing cars to campus in the fall, it is important to understand SNHU’s parking system. Parking at SNHU is essentially just a three-step process: buy a parking permit, figure out where you are allowed to park and parking in a legal spot.

First, to park on campus, it is necessary to buy a parking permit.

These can be purchased on mySNHU student portal for $200. Once

There is also the Zachos Common Cafe, where students are free to study or get together with friends while enjoying a beverage or snack from the Starbucks counter.

The second floor of the library is where students can find the Wolak Learning Center, which offers various peer-tutoring services for any and all courses.

Students can either make an appointment or visit the center during its walk-in hours to have a tutor aid them with any school work they may be struggling with.

On the third floor is where students will be able to find books, movies or other hard copy

resources which may be required for their courses. The third floor is also the “quiet floor,” and is meant for students who need peace and quiet in order to complete their work.

Every floor of the library provides a plethora of computers for students to complete their papers and projects, as well as three printers in case they need to provide a hard copy to their professor.

There are also multiple study rooms throughout the library which can be reserved for group projects.

The Edward S. Wolak Library is one of the main hubs of SNHU’s campus. On weekdays, it operates between the hours of 7 a.m. and 12:45 a.m., and it is also open on the weekends.

The first floor of the library features the Front Help Desk. These employees should be able to answer any questions students may have about the library as well as where students can check out any resources they need to borrow.

From here, students can create their SNHU parking account. After entering your last name and student ID number, the option to purchase the permit will become available. Make sure that the pass corresponds to the side of campus of your dorm: W for west side, E for east side, or F for freshman. Alternatively, students living off campus will purchase

a C (commuter) pass. If the correct option does not appear, call Public Safety to be preapproved for the right permit before making the purchase.

Once you have bought the parking permit, knowing where to park around campus is simple. All of the parking lots are designated with the letter – E, W, or C – of parking passes allowed to park in the lot.

For example, parking lot 26-C is for commuters. Freshman resident students can also park

in any W or E labeled parking lots depending on what side of campus they live on.

Securing a good parking spot is a matter of strategy. As a commuter, making an effort to leave home early is essential. For resident students, it is more of a matter of luck, and knowing when people will be coming and going from campus.

Parking in illegal spots can result in receiving tickets for $15, getting a boot on your car or even being towed.
