J

anette Bendle moves through her Mornington Pilates studio with the ease of someone who’s been teaching here for 13 years – though her journey as an instructor stretches back an impressive 26 years. It’s been seven months since she returned from filming The Golden Bachelor, and while she didn’t find romantic love on national television, she discovered something else entirely. “I remember it was one week in, it was my birthday, and they celebrated me,” she recalls of her fellow contestants. “I thought, you know, this is going to be my love story!”

At age 61, Janette suddenly found herself sharing a bedroom and bathroom with eight other women, an experience that could have been challenging but instead became transformative.

It was very much a reminder of give and take and accept other people’s misgivings and celebrate their wins “It was very much a reminder of give and take and accept other people’s misgivings and celebrate their wins,” she says. Within a week, the women had become family – a bond so strong they’re planning anniversary catch-ups every March.

The Mornington Peninsula has been Janette’s anchor for 32 years, and she can’t imagine living anywhere else. “It’s home, it’s community, it’s grounding. The people are accepting,” she explains. “I love the coastal feel, and then you drive five minutes and you feel like you’re in rural Victoria.”

Her favourite spots read like a peninsula love letter – South Beach where The Golden Bachelor filmed, Fishermans Beach for quiet moments, cocktails in Counting House’s beer garden, and sun-drenched afternoons at Montalto winery. “I love outdoor life. I love feeling the sun,” she says.

Pilates has been her professional calling since 1999 when she first started teaching in what would eventually become her current studio. The business has changed names over the years but has always carried her personal stamp. Despite losing some clients during her Golden Bachelor absence and the quiet winter months, she’s philosophical about her work. “I’m never going to get rich,” she admits, “but I have the most beautiful customers.”

The past year has brought its challenges alongside the excitement of reality television. As an only child, Janette has navigated the complex journey of caring for her elderly mother, who now resides in a care facility. “I’ve had this crazy year full of really high highs and really low lows,” she reflects. She now visits her mother daily, while maintaining her business and personal life.

Asked if she’d consider being The Golden Bachelorette, she doesn’t hesitate. “Would I love to have my choice of 20 men?

It’s not such a bad thing! Surely I’d have to find one out of 20!” she laughs.

Family brings its own rewards. Janette is the proud mother of two adult sons, aged 28 and 30, and recently celebrated a new milestone when she became a grandmother. Now 11-months old, the girl she calls her “little gem,” has brought fresh joy to her life. Back at home, three dogs and a cat ensure there’s never a dull moment in what she cheerfully describes as her sometimes chaotic household.

Along with her family and studio commitments, Janette nurtures a creative side through her Substack @janettebendle, where she documents her reflections on life and its many periods of transition. Some entertainment publications have chosen to reprint her pieces, recognising the power in her honest and heartwarming storytelling.

Experiences like The Golden Bachelor have given her rich material for reflection – offering unexpected lessons about resilience and adaptation. The camping weekend stands out as a highlight, particularly the night her friend Jan couldn’t figure out how to open the caravan’s bathroom door (“Try sliding it!”

Janette eventually suggested, before both women collapsed in fits of laughter). The ’80s-themed gala saw her performing on stage in full retro gear, though she paid for the enthusiasm with a knee injury that sidelined her for five days.

“Right now I just feel in a really, really good place,” Janette says with quiet confidence.

For someone who went on television looking for love, Janette Bendle found it in unexpected forms – in the sisterhood of women who became family, in the peninsula community that holds her steady, and in the quiet satisfaction of helping others find their strength through Pilates. Sometimes the best love stories are the ones we don’t see coming.

T

he day Lana Schulenburg’s family moved to their Pearcedale farm in 2020 remains etched in her memory as a childhood wish finally granted. She and her brother spent hours exploring paddocks and climbing trees, discovering every corner of the land that would shape her future. “It reminds me of how many candles I blew out wishing for a horse in my backyard,” she said. “The fact that it’s my reality now is a dream come true.”

Five years later, that farm has become the launching pad for an extraordinary array of ambitions. Now 18 years old, Lana is a Miss Teen Galaxy Australia National Finalist, a show-jumper with Olympic dreams, and the founder of youth empowerment platform Elevate U. Her 1,500-plus hours of community service barely scratch the surface of a schedule that would exhaust most adults.

“The chaos, challenges, and adventures make my life exciting,” she says of juggling commitments that recently saw her compete at a horse event, rush home to pack, fly to Gold Coast for a Derby Day runway show, squeeze in pageant appearances, then return for a family boating day. “I have a lot of fun juggling it all.”

I was overwhelmed with how genuinely kind and supportive this large group of women were Her pageant journey began after three years of modelling experience, drawn by visions of beautiful gowns and sparkling crowns. When she discovered Australia Galaxy Pageants, she found something deeper. “The moment I was called into the top three, I was overwhelmed with excitement,” she recalls of placing Second Runner-Up at this year’s competition. Watching the video later, she observed something telling: “I can’t help but notice how proud and happy I looked.”

The pageant world has surprised her with its supportive community, contradicting stereotypes about cutthroat competition.

“My experience at Nationals was amazing. I was overwhelmed with how genuinely kind and supportive this large group of women were.”

her other pursuits. Winning would mean recognition for her work supporting youth and horses on a larger scale.

Those horses – four of them – anchor her daily life. This year, each morning began with feeding and riding before schoolwork, tutoring, vaulting lessons, gym sessions, or online pageant coaching.

Her first horse, Dusty, taught her to ride. Her second horse, Charlie, proved how far they’d come as a team. Ollie, her third and most challenging mount, pushed her to become better, rewarding her persistence with a fifth-place finish among 44 riders at the Boneo Cup. Valentino, her youngest, has only ever been ridden by her – trained from scratch in what she considers one of her greatest achievements.

“My horses played a huge role, giving me a break from studying and helping me unwind during those long, tiring nights,” she says of completing Year 12 while maintaining her demanding schedule.

Her first mentee, who began riding lessons with Lana three years ago when Lana was just 15, exemplifies this impact. “Being part of her journey has also helped me grow, as I’ve come to understand the impact I can have on someone else’s life.”

Her show-jumping coach Mark Griffiths has transformed her from an inexperienced rider into someone confident and capable, with twice-weekly lessons propelling her toward that audacious goal: the 2032 Brisbane Olympics. “I truly believe I have the support and mindset to one day become an Olympic rider,” she states, currently riding at least 15 times weekly while planning interstate competitions to gain experience.

Through Elevate U, Lana channels everything she’s learned into helping others. The platform emerged from lessons absorbed from coaches and her mentor, Alycia Burton, whose youth retreats have been central to Lana’s volunteer work. At her own events, riding lessons lead into conversations about life, school, and growing up.

“Using horses as a starting point, I’m able to connect with girls, foster confidence, and support them in any way they need.”

People often assume her parents manage everything, but Lana has handled her own responsibilities since age twelve. “I’m still just a hardworking, happy horse girl who’s determined to make her own way in the world,

however I can.”

Her advice to peninsula teens with big dreams reflects this independence: find mentors with real-life experience. At age 12, Lana watched countless videos of Alycia Burton, attended her camps, and now works at those same camps of which she once dreamed. “With courage, curiosity, and experience over time, it’s absolutely possible for anyone.” continued page 16 ...

Despite opportunities beckoning beyond the peninsula, Lana sees her future rooted here. “Living here gives me the space and support to chase my biggest dreams while still having a place that feels grounding, familiar, and truly mine.”

For someone who grew up reading Peninsula Essence and finding inspiration in local success stories like that of AFLW player Mackenzie Eardley, being featured is a full-circle moment. The girl who wished for horses in her backyard is now garnering pageant sashes, training for her Olympic dreams, and lifting up the next generation, all the while keeping her boots firmly planted in the soil of her Pearcedale farm.

ronwyn Kidd is an international award-winning fashion, portrait and art photographer. Ensconced in her idyllic mid-century modern home amongst the gum trees in Frankston South, she envisions concepts for a photograph or photographic series from scratch. Once she has the concept in mind, she gathers the best creative collaborators to bring her vision to life.

A portrait of her friend, Polly Borland, a world-renowned photographer/artist, won the prestigious Martin Kantor Portrait Prize at the 2025 Ballarat International Foto Biennale. The judges loved Bronwyn’s sophisticated composition that utilized analogue and digital techniques to dramatic effect.

Over her long career, Bronwyn has created and photographed campaigns for major advertising brands and captured iconic portraits of famous people in fashion, film, television, theatre, arts, sports, human rights and politics. She’s also been commissioned for projects by the National Gallery of Victoria, City of Melbourne and Bendigo Art Gallery. Her proudest achievement, so far, is having five of her portraits in London’s National Portrait Gallery.

While Bronwyn enjoys the technical aspects of photography, it’s imagining concepts for shoots that really captivates her. To create an image or series from an empty studio space is a real thrill. She invests a great deal of time and effort in research and experimentation to see if her ideas can translate into images.

From the time Bronwyn starting experimenting with photography in high school, she was hooked. Her mother, a painter and cake decorator, loved the glamour icons of American black and white cinema. That style struck a chord with Bronwyn.

It’s influenced much of her work. Her father, a butcher, was also interested in photography. He always had a camera handy and let Bronwyn borrow it.

Growing up in the arty enclave of Eltham provided lots of inspiration. Bronwyn took her very first pictures at nearby artists’ community, Montsalvat. Then, she started going to music gigs to photograph bands. She’d return to school to process the images with her Year 11 teacher and mentor, James McArdle. Her first camera was a 35mm Pentax ME Super SLR and it got plenty of use.

Bronwyn went to study Photography at RMIT, but rigour didn’t suit her. She left after a year to apprentice with a young photographer, Andrew Vukosav. She was happy to work for free just to learn the ins and outs of the photography business.

“Everything has a reason in England. It created an understanding of history and where I come from. I love the depth of pride people put into doing things properly. I was given time to create thoughtfully. I was respected as an artist,” she says.

Then she met up with a peer from RMIT who worked at Vanbar Imaging, a film shop. He introduced Bronwyn to Andrew, who lived upstairs. He was like a mad scientist mentor experimenting with images until 3am. He invited Bronwyn to go to Paris and it was a game changer. When the assignment with Andrew was finished, she took off to travel around Europe.

Back in Melbourne, Bronwyn embarked on a new chapter. She has worked consistently. In fact, she’s never done any other kind of work. “It’s a privilege to be an artist and creator. I’m grateful to be able to do it. If I hadn’t found the camera, I’d have a lot locked inside me. Finding photography taught me my skill set.”

“I want my work to be timeless. There is a I could say sincerity in all of my pictures. “In the days of analogue fashion or portrait photography, as the photographer, I was also the director controlling all of the elements.

It’s was thrilling because it was all down to me. I cope best on a big production with a lot of pressure - living on adrenaline. I love the lights, camera, action!” she says.

Bronwyn was just 23 when she was in charge of photographing epic fashion collections. She was photographer to Hardy Amies of Saville Row who created fashions for Queen Elizabeth. London was where life started to make sense to Bronwyn.

A

Mt Martha artist and retired surgeon has unveiled his latest creative work, A World of Dogs in Watercolour, a beautifully illustrated book celebrating dogs and the joy they bring.

The book features over 140 breeds, each brought to life through David Freedman’s intricate watercolour paintings. From wellknown family pets and less familiar breeds, the collection captures the personality, expression and charm of each dog.

“It is one of the joys of life to experience the giving and receiving of a dogs love,” Freedman said.

“They provide both loyal companionships as well a sense of purpose in caring for them. They’re always so excited to see you and sad when you go away.”

Let’s do something positive for dogs and for all the love we’ve had from them in our lives Freedman, 81, said he wanted to show the soul of each fourlegged friend including their expression, posture, and the little details that make each breed unique.

But it was no easy task, with Freedman having called in advice including from international dog expert Jane Harvey to ensure every breed was accurately represented, with an abundance of photos also sent in from dog owners.

Following Harvey’s advice, Freedman said he looked up the Dogs Australia website and wrote down all the purebred dog clubs “just to get a feel for what purebred dogs were in Australia”.

“There are actually 350 breeds of dog in the world. I couldn’t do 350 in the book, so I cut it down to about 145 and I picked some dogs that aren’t common in Australia, but they look different,” he said, adding he tried to add “as much variety into the book as I could”. continued next page ...

All your favourite breeds are profiled in the book including the Border Collie, Golden Retriever and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, French Bulldog, Cocker Spaniel and Labrador with a few lesser known such as the Bolognese and Lhasa Apso also featured.

Freedman worked with his son-in-law Craig Whittle who helped put the words together of each breed. Whittle works in the film and television industry and has had a lifelong passion for books, writing, and research.

Both Freedman and Whittle have both experienced the devastating loss of losing a dog “so we thought, let’s do something positive for dogs and for all the love we’ve had from them in our lives”.

A lifelong painter, Freedman has illustrated two books about Australian birds.

“I worked up in Swan Hill most of my life as a rural surgeon.

Painting was my hobby and when I retired in 2016 I took up painting full time and tried to reinvent myself as a book illustrator,” he said.

Freedman spent every day for about a year creating his latest book – time, he said, that passed quickly.

“I would sit down and have a beer and wonder what time it was because I was so absorbed in it,” he humoured.

In 2026, Music at McClelland returns for its fifth season, inviting audiences to immerse themselves in a year of sonic colour and creative brilliance.

From February to November, on the third Sunday of each month, the Sarah and Baillieu Myer Education Pavilion will host ten remarkable concerts, each offering an intimate encounter with some of Australia’s most compelling musical voices. This season is a celebration of diversity and innovation, spanning centuries, continents, and genres. It is a program that moves from the haunting beauty of jazz to the elegance of classical piano, from bold contemporary soundscapes to the rare timbres of historical instruments.

The journey begins with Michelle Nicolle and Paul Grabowsky’s NOIR, a collaboration born from a shared love of melancholy and the art of storytelling through song. Their music speaks of sentiment rather than sentimentality, revealing beauty in shadow and calm in complexity. From there, audiences will experience the refined artistry of Stephen McIntyre, one of Australia’s most eminent pianists, whose interpretations have captivated listeners around the world.

Romanticism takes centre stage in April with Souvenirs: Brahms and Tchaikovsky’s String Sextets, works that blend intimacy with emotional depth. May brings the dazzling partnership of Zoë Black and Joe Chindamo, whose performances fuse classical virtuosity with daring imagination. In June, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Academy showcases the brilliance of emerging musicians, offering a glimpse into the future of Australian music.

July introduces Aaron Wyatt, a First Nations composer, conductor, violist, violinist, programmer, and academic whose career is as multifaceted as his artistry. From conducting major symphony orchestras to pioneering music technology, Aaron’s work is a testament to innovation and cultural depth. August welcomes the Grigoryan Brothers, whose guitar mastery transcends genres, while September sees Rubiks reimagine classical music for the modern era through fearless creativity and cross-disciplinary collaboration.

October brings the exquisite Australian Chamber Choir, renowned for its flawless intonation and dynamic range, performing repertoire that spans Renaissance to contemporary Australian works.

The season concludes in November with the Gryphon Baryton Trio, reviving the rare and beautiful baryton repertoire alongside newly commissioned works for this unique soundscape.

M

oorooduc master potter, John Stroomer, has spent his professional career of over 50 years chasing perfection.

He’s internationally recognised for his work with crystalline glazes which is a complex ceramic technique that creates gem-like crystals on a finished piece by controlling the cooling temperature. His forms and glazes reflect mastery of both the potter’s wheel and crystalline process; a testament to his passion and dedication. He loves the challenge and satisfaction of getting it right.

John has exhibited in over 100 major exhibitions in Australia and internationally. A highlight was being invited by Villeroy and Boch to exhibit in Abenteuer Kristallglasur, an international crystalline exhibition which travelled to five of the major porcelain museums in Germany.

In 2009 he was commissioned by the Department of Landscape Design at Cumbria University in England to collaborate in building a themed ‘Potters Garden’ around his work at the Chelsea Flower and Garden Show. This collaboration was awarded the Silver Medal.

John was born to parents of Dutch and Belgian heritage. At the age of five, he spent 12 months in Holland and Belgium with his mother. While living in Amsterdam, they visited a fair where John saw a potter working at the wheel. He distinctly remembers a little voice in his head saying, “This is what you’ll do in the future.”

John spent the first two years of a four-year Diploma of Art at Shepparton Technical College where he learned foundation skills from life drawing to art theory. For the final two years he moved on to Bendigo Institute of Technology specializing in Ceramics.

From the moment he touched clay, he couldn’t put it down.

“I love throwing on the potter’s wheel because I like the physical connection with the clay. Glazing is the real challenge,” he says.

After completing his second diploma, John set up his own studio supplying gift and cookware shops. He built that business up to employ 23 potters. Following a horrific factory fire in 1988, then, the brutal recession of the 80s/90s, John stood at a crossroads. He could have given up, but that five-year-old’s inner voice returned,

John likens getting perfect crystals to mining gold. He has his own gold mine in each batch of raw materials. Every new batch is different and unpredictable. He gets it right or he starts again.

John is certainly not short on patience. “Crystalline glazing is widely regarded as one of the most difficult ceramic techniques in the world. It’s a knife’s edge balance. Chasing those gems is the thrill,” he says.

Despite his challenges, John says, “I feel very lucky to be able to do what I do; to have people appreciate what I make and want to buy it. The work is the legacy.” A perfect piece of ceramic art comes from the skill of the maker; the shape, form, and mastery of the glazework. John seems to have all of that down. Even better, he insists on making his work affordable.

Being able to live and create on the Mornington Peninsula provides space, peace, and inspiration. “I love working and living on the same property. The serenity has such a positive impact on my energy. I love the ocean and fishing.

Everything I need is right here,” he says.

Currently, John is working on something completely different with a brilliant creative collaborator, visual artist Marta Gola. John’s enormous former chook shed set amongst rolling green hills in an idyllic countryside property has been converted into two studios at either end with a huge production space in between.

The pair of artists are breaking new ground as Marta paints her gorgeous nudes onto John’s pots to genuinely striking effect.

“This studio is beyond my dreams,” Marta says, looking out her huge picture window at the horses grazing on the neighbouring property. “This collaboration has expanded my drawing practice and given me a whole new direction working with a new medium.

The vessel itself gives another dimension to the intention of the work. The pots represent a holding place for the feminine representing women finding their own peace, coming home to themselves,” she says.

Marta creates portraits and drawings in charcoal and graphite on paper. Now, she also paints onto ceramic tiles as well as her own pots, creating an unusual and dramatic effect.

Sometimes the clay cracks. That only adds to the piece. “Some kind of magic happens in the kiln. The organic nature of the firing process gives the work a lived history. You couldn’t manufacture that effect. It takes some of the control away as the kiln gods do their thing,” she says.

John and Marta have a symbiotic relationship. Each provides knowledge and inspiration to the other. John has always envisioned having figurative paintings on his pots. Marta had never thought of working with clay. Collaboration has brought new life to each artist’s practice. Together and apart, they make exceptional art.

UNFOLDING: FIRST NATIONS WORKS ON PAPER Unfolding is a major exhibition of First Nations works on paper featuring prints, drawings and paintings on paper works from the MPRG collection. First Nations artists have used paper as a material to demonstrate a particular kind of strength and permanence – one that holds, carries and expresses identity, body and self, language, connection to Country, history and community.

Curated in collaboration with Gulumerridjin (Larrakia), Wardaman, and KarraJarri artist and curator Jenna (Mayilema) Lee, Unfolding recognises the significance of paper as a powerful tool for the transfer of knowledge, stories, and contemporary artistic expression.

The exhibition features more than 100 works by over 80 artists including Queenie McKenzie, Gloria Petyarre, Robert Fielding, Brian Robinson, Brian Martin, Fiona Foley, Nici Cumpston, d harding, Danie Mellor, Teho Rope-yarn, Lisa Waup, Dominic White, Sally Morgan, and many more.

Co-curator Jenna (Mayilema) Lee says: “Paper is alluring because it holds contradictions. It is the material of colonial paperwork, the bureaucratic pages that catalogued, restricted, and attempted to define us. Yet in the hands of First Nations artists, paper becomes something else entirely: a surface for resistance, renewal and possibility.

Each work on paper unfolds to reveal a new facet, a reminder that this most everyday of materials can bear the weight of history while opening space for newer, truer tellings.”

Over the course of its 55-year history, the collection policies that have shaped the development of MPRG’s Permanent Collection have focused on a core collecting priority: the acquisition of works on paper by Australian artists of national significance. This priority has enabled gallery directors and curators to develop a focused First Nations works on paper collection that encapsulates drawings, prints, paintings on paper and sculptural works. Through the Gallery’s diverse acquisition streams, nearly 170 contemporary First Nations artists from across Australia are represented in the Collection.

The first work by a First Nations artist entered the Collection in 1997: Swamphen at Lake Joondalup, a vibrant screen-print by Sally Morgan gifted to the collection by Ms Ingrid McGaughey. This was shortly followed by purchases from the Gallery’s acquisitive prize exhibitions Spring Festival of Drawing (1997) and the National Works on Paper (1998): Watiya Tjuta (Many Trees) by Mitjili Napurrula and Untitled (Awelye) by Gloria Petyarre respectively. The acquisition of these three powerful works, all notably by women artists from across the continent, marked the beginning of the Gallery’s commitment to supporting First Nations contemporary art through its collecting practices.

29 NOVEMBER – 15 FEBRUARY 2026 Co-curator Stephanie Sacco says: “Of a collection of approximately 2,500 works, over 400 works are by First Nations artists. What makes this collection special is that every single First Nations work in the Collection is a work on paper: this is a collection that tells the story of the significance of this medium to First Nations artists.”

The exhibition is supported by an activity space featuring the work of multidisciplinary artist Sammy Trist, a proud and passionate Taungurung woman of the Kulin Nation. Sammy will launch the activity space with an insect ochre painting workshop on Sunday 30 November. There’ll also be artist and curator talks, a long table discussion.

On Friday 23 January, First Nations DJs Fosters and Pvrtal take over the decks with an electric mix of melodic afro, shuffling house, disco and techno, layered with First Nations sounds and vocal samples.

This high-energy night is all about rhythm, culture and coming together.

NEW FRANKSTON ARTS CENTRE FORECOURT TAKES CENTRE STAGE The iconic Frankston Arts Centre (FAC) forecourt now boasts a grand new entrance, making it more accessible, inviting and safe — while highlighting Frankston City’s artistic heart.

“It’s more than just an upgrade—it’s a celebration of Frankston’s commitment to art, accessibility, and the arts-loving community who make it all happen.”

The $2.1 million redevelopment was designed to accommodate a diverse range of visitors, reinforcing FAC’s position as a much-loved cultural hub.

Barbara Crook, Chair of the Frankston Arts Advisory Board, also welcomed the upgrade.

The project was initially planned in 2018, however following the COVID-19 pandemic, priorities shifted to support the community, and the project was delayed to future years.

Project delivery required considerable time to plan as it was particularly complex, with services relocated by providers, and construction taking place around a full schedule of live events, ensuring the Centre remained fully operational throughout the works.

Key features of the redesign, informed by community feedback, include: • Universal access: Upgraded pathways, ramps, and smoother surfaces for prams, wheelchairs, grand pianos, and hospitality trolleys.

• Safer traffic flow: Separate areas for cars and pedestrians, with clearly marked drop-off and pick-up zones and relocation of the bus stop.

• Enhanced lighting: Modern fixtures that improve safety and create a warm, inviting atmosphere for evening visitors.

• Additional seating and shelter: More places to rest and wait comfortably out of the sun and rain.

• Cultural water feature and landscaping: Created with the Bunurong Land Council Aboriginal Corporation, this feature honours Frankston’s First People. Reflecting the region’s waterways and the eel’s cultural significance, it symbolises abundance, vitality, and connection— linking the flowing water outside to the storytelling and creativity celebrated within.

• Dynamic signage: A larger, street-facing screen provides real-time event updates, while modern signage guides visitors seamlessly.

Cr David Asker said the project is a win for the whole community.

“The Arts Centre is one of Frankston City’s biggest drawcards, attracting on average 160,000 visitors each year (though last year was a record year reaching 195,000 visitors including about 40,000 students).

“Almost half of these come from outside the municipality, playing a vital role in our local economy by supporting nearby cafes, restaurants, and shopping centres,” he said.

“This redevelopment cements the Arts Centre’s position as not just an arts and culture institution, but a key player in the vitality of the broader Frankston community.

“This forecourt transformation is a powerful reminder that art belongs at the heart of our city,” she said.

“Council has created a space designed to spark creativity, invite connection, and celebrate the cultural identity of Frankston. We’re proud to see a design that reflects community voices and honours our artistic heritage.”

The upgrade follows another special occasion for the Arts Centre, the opening of the Gail Dudeck Lounge at the mezzanine gallery of the Dress Circle.

Frankston City Mayor Kris Bolam JP said Gail was a passionate and tireless champion of the arts. Her visionary leadership was instrumental in the creation of the Frankston Cutural Centre, now proudly known as the Frankston Arts Centre.

“The Frankston Arts Centre continually strives to improve its facilities to reflect the community it serves and to recognise those who helped bring it to life,” he said.

“This dedication was recently celebrated with the opening of the Gail Dudeck Lounge, honouring one of the Centre’s most passionate advocates.

“Continuing this commitment, the newly refurbished forecourt now offers an inviting outdoor space that enhances the overall visitor experience and strengthens the connection between the centre and its community.”

Gail’s granddaughter Amy Dudeck added: “Seeing the forecourt transformed alongside the dedication of the Gail Dudeck Lounge is deeply meaningful to our family,” she said.

“My grandmother believed the Arts Centre should be a place where everyone feels welcome, and this upgrade truly reflects that vision— creating a space that is accessible, vibrant, and connected to the community she loved.”

Frankston City is attracting unprecedented growth, development, and investment from the public and private sector and continually growing visitor numbers. don’t have my head in the clouds, but I certainly am taking a closer look now that Pantone (a global authority on colour) has announced its colour for 2026: 'Cloud Dancer' which is a lofty shade of white. Its certainly creating a whir and a lot of chitter chatter but when you look up to the skies and focus on what that actually entails, you quickly learn that this is not just any white shade; it’s an ombre of hues that range from pearly silver to a crisp sharp bright white. continued page 42 ...

This 'neutral' is an avant-garde choice that is creating a little controversy around the world. Is it too boring? Is it just being lazy?

The colour of the year is typically given to a pigmented shade as in past choices like Mocha Mousse, Peach Fuzz and Viva Magenta.

So why white?

The decision-making process is a serious one as it influences not only the fashion arena, but it weighs heavily into product development, marketing, graphics, packaging, even politics!

There seems to be a global mood of hyper-connectivity and noise that feels like it may need some settling. The hope is to evoke a feeling of tranquillity, like the emotion of seeing freshly fallen snow or clean linen blowing in the wind. The population of Balnarring area in 2021 was 5149 (including Balnarring, Merricks, and Somers).

Balnarring Beach, also known as Tulum Beach, lies at the mouth of Merricks Creek and overlooks Phillip Island.

The formation of the Balnarring village came with the opening of the post office in 1866, a school in 1871, and a church in 1881.

In 1924, the Harley Davidson motorcycle club built a clubhouse at the beach and it is still there today. The club members met at the Cheero Tearooms at Balnarring presumably after they had been beach racing at Balnarring Beach. The local council prohibited beach racing around 1930, so the club members then used Bob and Frank Myers property (who were local members) for racing. In 1926 Milledge Bros. Pty Ltd of Elizabeth St Melbourne purchased 2 lots of land from the Balnarring Beach Estate for the use of the Harley Club. Milledge Bros. were the importers of Harley Davidsons at the time.

Club rooms were built on this land and were opened in December 1928. From 1930 until the mid-1950s Mr. K.J. Rattray Wood of East Brunswick was listed as the owner of the land and he rented it to the Harley Club.

Today, although the board over the gate still says 'The Harley Club' the house is privately owned. This is certainly an unusual piece of Mornington Peninsula's history.

On 23 August 1899, the Balnarring Mechanics' Institute was opened by the Hon. F.S. Grimwade (MLC North Yarra, 1891–1904). It was a timber hall, used as a community hall and social centre by the community until the 1960s. A new hall was built in 1969. In 1970 the Mechanics' Institute building burned down, and in 1979 a reserve was declared in its original location.

The Balbirooroo Community Wetlands border the commercial centre and include a lagoon and walking trails.

Balnarring Beach has won prestigious cleanliness awards, including "Cleanest Beach in Victoria" multiple times and the national title of "Cleanest Beach in Australia" in 2006 from the Keep Australia Beautiful Council.

Just to the east of Balnarring on the coast in neighbouring Somers are the Coolart Wetlands. This nature reserve surrounds the historical Coolart Homestead which was built in 1895 and includes a lagoon where thousands of Australian white ibis nest every year, plus attractive picnic and BBQ areas.

From 1857 onwards, the Government created a number of Land Acts designed to open the land, offering blocks to small-scale farmers. The Parish of Balnarring was surveyed in 1865, as part of the "Agricultural Area of Mount McMahon". Most of the selectors were orchardists although dairy farmers also took an interest in the area. In the 1920s, the construction of cool stores at Red Hill increased their ability to trade their produce further afield.

THE MAGIC OF CRITTENDEN There’s a particular magic to a long lunch on the Mornington Peninsula; the light on the vines, sea air drifting inland and the sense that everything is meant to be savoured slowly. It’s a homecoming and fresh chapter for one of the region’s most respected wine families who, after more than two decades, have reclaimed their original restaurant, transforming it into a modern, thoughtful space still deeply tied to its roots.

The story starts well before this latest chapter. The Crittenden name has been part of the peninsula’s wine landscape since 1982, when Garry and Margaret planted their first vines and quietly helped shape the region’s food and wine identity. Their winery restaurant, opened in the 1990s, was the peninsula’s first of its kind and a sign of what this corner of Victoria could offer. Today, the next generation leads the way: Rollo oversees the winery and broader business, his sister Zoe steers the creative and brand direction, and Rollo’s wife Linda brings her property expertise and design eye to the luxury accommodation. It remains a true family enterprise, evolving alongside the region it helped put on the map.

Stepping into the reinvented Crittenden Restaurant it’s clear that the family has poured themselves into every detail. The dining room is contemporary yet warm, anchored by a modern fireplace that invites you to linger. Beyond it, the covered deck overlooks the lake and vines for year-round alfresco dining, while the landscaped terrace offers a more relaxed spot for casual, unhurried meals.

As Linda explains, “The goal was to create spaces that felt tied to the vines, the water, and the people who gather here.”

The restaurant’s menu, crafted by Head Chef Brunno Melo, shares the same strong sense of place. Blending modern Australian flavours with Mediterranean influences, His dishes are fresh, textural, and deceptively simple, an expression of the region’s produce and his own belief that great food should be honest and unpretentious. Two Josper charcoal-oven dishes are signatures of his approach: The Raven’s Creek Free-Range Dry-Aged Tomahawk Pork Chop arrives blushing and tender with a smoky crust, lifted by burnt pear glaze, fire-roasted cabbage, capers and pickled chilli.

The Josper-Fired Half Barrel Swordfish Steak, line-caught off Mooloolaba, is charred and brightened with burnt lime and smoked maple chimichurri. Both showcase his mastery of fire, flavour and fresh produce.

A visit to Crittenden isn’t complete without stopping by the cellar door, one of the region’s most loved tasting experiences. Relaxed yet educational, it showcases the family’s wines; from elegant regional heroes chardonnay and pinot noir, to textural Savagnin and smallbatch releases crafted with Rollo’s meticulous care. OUT LOUD ON THE NINCH

QUEER VOICES \ QUEER ART \ QUEER SOUND

Midsumma comes to the Mornington Peninsula for the first time in 2026 with Out Loud on the Ninch set to transform the Peninsula Community Theatre into a vibrant sunset celebration of queer identity, creative expression and intergenerational connection.

Taking place on Saturday, 7 February 2026, the event is part of Midsumma’s Regional Activation Program and welcomes LGBTQIA+ community members and allies for an evening of pride, performance, and shared stories. The celebration will also feature live queer performers Maxon and DJ Minogue, food trucks, and information stalls offering resources and connections for the local queer community.

At the heart of the event is You & I, a new photographic exhibition created through an intergenerational exchange between queer young people aged 18–24 and queer elders on the peninsula.

Participants will explore photography, portraiture, storytelling and documentary practice through workshops led by professional queer local artists Noa Wolf Smith Fletcher (Photography) and Roe Bonnici (Filmmaking & Visual Arts).

Noa Wolf Smith Fletcher said, “When queer young people photograph queer elders, they are doing more than making portraits; they are recording living history. They remind us that queer identity is not only personal, but collective, built through conversation, remembrance, and the gaze that says, I see you; I am because you were.”

Elders will share lived experiences, wisdom and resilience, helping create a powerful dialogue across generations. The resulting images and stories will be displayed in the You & I exhibition. Audiences will also be invited to contribute by writing letters about their own identities and pride, which the Australian Queer Archives will professionally archive alongside the participants’ work.

Roe Bonnici said that growing up queer can be an incredibly isolating experience, especially on the Mornington Peninsula, where community pockets can feel scattered.

“You & I not only empower our young people with technical skills and creative expression, but offer a chance for curiosity, and connection with our community’s elders,” Roe said.

Out Loud on the Ninch is supported through Victoria’s Pride program, a partnership between the Victorian Government and Midsumma.

It is produced by the Flinders Fringe Festival with support from the Mornington Peninsula Shire.

FIRST NATIONS ART FROM THREE REGIONS FEATURE AT EVERYWHEN Three stand-alone exhibitions by leading and next-generation artists from different regions feature in Everywhen Arts’ summer show over January.

Award-winning Kimberley artist Shirley Purdie's rich ochre works detail her Gija people's creation stories and the events that shaped her life and those of her people. Innovative paintings by Amanda Gabori – the youngest daughter of the famous artist Sally Gabori – relate the stories of her Far North Queensland Bentinck Island Sea Country; and vibrant paintings by Atipalku Intjalki, Carlene Thompson, Janice Stanley, Langaliki Lewis, Rachael Mipantjiti Lionel and Tjulyata Kulyuru from Ernabella Arts in the APY Lands depict salt lakes, desert storms, Mamu-spirit figures and more.

Each occupies its own exhibition space in Everywhen's historic home gallery, Whistlewood. Susan McCulloch, Everywhen's cocurator says that the artists are represented by three of Australia's leading art centres: the Kimberley's Warmun Art Centre; FNQ's Mornington Island Arts; and the APY Lands' Ernabella Arts, the oldest continuously running art centre in Australia.

“The quality, vitality and cultural significance of the works makes for a stylistically varied and exciting display.” As well, she says, a wide range of other First Nations art is also available.

TURNING A NEGATIVE INTO A POSITIVE: & INDEPENDENTS OPENS IN SORRENTO The recent decline in art sales and retail has made things challenging for galleries and small independent traders in Sorrento. For many, the closure of the beloved Toy Workshop — a Sorrento institution for over 20 years — was a painful moment.

This shop has delighted generations of locals and visitors alike, and seeing it close last month was truly disheartening.

But rather than complain or give up, the team behind the new initiative chose to turn a negative into a positive. From this challenge, the concept of & Independents was born — a vibrant new retail destination designed to celebrate independent traders and makers.

They are thrilled that Noel has decided to reopen the Toy Workshop within & Independents, joining approximately 20 other small businesses. Now, it’s up to locals and visitors to help ensure that cherished independent traders remain a thriving part of Sorrento’s retail landscape.

History

How The Peninsula Was Made

formed it.

e take for granted the peninsula on which we live and play, but we never stop and think of the forces of nature, over millions of years, that

“A peninsula is a piece of land that is almost entirely surrounded by water but is connected to the mainland on one side.” (National Geographic) The aborigines might well have witnessed the formation of the Mornington Peninsula. Those camped in the vicinity of today’s Somerville and Tyabb 20,000 years ago would have been aware of water on only two sides - to the south (Bass Strait) and to the west (Port Phillip). In the east the sun rose on the far side of a broad fertile river valley several miles wide.

The first earthquake would have been both bewildering and catastrophic. In one shuddering movement, the valley floor was lowered 30 metres and in rushed the sea. After a period of calm, a series of smaller movements lowered the valley by another 30 metres, and the waters of Western Port were here to stay - the peninsula land mass was now surrounded by water on three sides.

The streams which flowed into Western Port tell the story. With each lowering of the valley, they cut deeper and left a series of steps in their floors and terraces on their banks. As the sea rushed in, the old valley’s river system became the shipping channels of a new bay.

Geologists talk about this period as being of “recent” times. The story really began several million years earlier.

An underwater birth 450 million years ago the eastern third of Australia lay under the sea in a large depression called the Tasman Syncline. As sediment and dead marine life settled on the ocean floor it was compressed into horizontal layers by the weight of water above it. The mud

and sands were compacted into shales and sandstones, called sedimentary rocks, containing many fossils.

The earth’s surface is like an egg shell, broken into several pieces.

Pressure from the interior drives these portions - called “plates” - in various directions. The Australian plate, which was once connected to Antarctica, is today the fastest moving of them all, travelling northwards at the rate of 7 cm a year - or two metres every 25 years!

These same internal forces also created pressure on the horizontal layers of sedimentary rock, and buckled them into ridges and valleys, like a corrugated iron sheet.

These tilted sedimentary rocks can be seen in many roadside cuttings around the Peninsula, especially in the Mt Martha district.

The making of Arthurs Seat Take a large leap forward in time to 150 million years ago. Despite what many people think, Arthurs Seat is not an old volcano, although it is of “volcanic” origin. Molten rock is called lava only when it reaches the surface - and, in this case, it did not.

Magma from a large underground molten rock chamber pushed up into the horizontal layers of sedimentary rock. Although this heated and chemically changed them into much harder rocks, the old sedimentary rocks were more easily eroded leaving the harder granite dome exposed. Arthurs Seat remains a prominent feature today, standing at over 300m above sea level.

Other domes, Mt Martha (163m), Mt Eliza (156m) and Olivers Hill (55m), are all of similar granitic rock and made in the same way. Their location all in a row suggests that they developed at points of weakness along a line in the earth’s crust. continued next page...

Building up the ridge Over time, the buckling up of our ridge (anticline) developed weaknesses and cracks began to appear, called “fault lines”. The main ones were along the ridge line in the same north-easterly direction. The Balcombe fault lies along the central axis of the fold, with Selwyn fault to the west and Devilbend fault on its eastern side.

Since these fault lines are weaknesses in the rock layers, vertical movements occurred along them from time to time and the land between them was either raised or lowered. These movements would have been accompanied by rumblings and sizable earthquakes.

Two main blocks were thrust up between these fault lines.

Let the lava flow About 40 million years ago, lava did flow on the surface but this came from outside our region well to the north east of us. This lava was thin and fairly fluid and oozed gently and quietly from numerous fissures in the earth’s surface. It flowed down the synclines (valleys) on each side of our ridge where it flooded the broad river plains and buried the existing soils.

These two lava flows came together near Cape Schanck and their combined weight caused the land there to sink.

Over the years there were many separate lava flows. These can be seen in the cliffs at Cape Schanck and Flinders where each flow is separated by thinner layers of ash and soil.

These softer soil layers eroded faster and wave action has left distinctive coastal features: rock platforms at sea level, vertical cliffs, and the occasional special feature of resistant rock such as Pulpit Rock and Elephant Rock.

Bald Hill was the first to be raised - between the Devilbend and Balcombe faults - about 120 metres, leaving it only 60 metres less than the nearby Arthurs Seat.

The Arthurs Seat Block, between Selwyn and Balcombe faults, was elevated some time later. There were three distinct movements – 90m, 60m and then 30m – which pushed the granitic dome of Arthurs Seat to 314 metres, the highest point on the peninsula.

There were two important consequences of these uplifts.

Firstly, before it was raised, the Arthurs Seat block was partly covered by sands blown in from the ocean. This unproductive land was never cleared for farming, and “Greens Bush” remains our largest area of bushland today.

Secondly, as these blocks rose higher they created a steeper fall to the sea and streams were energised to cut more deeply onto their courses. The longest stream on the peninsula, Main Creek, runs through a deep valley between two main blocks. continued page 94...

The inland sea The old lava flows had largely filled the broad valleys on either side of the peninsula ridge. Streams slowly cut new channels and the two main river systems joined up south of Cape Schanck and ran for 50 miles across a broad plain before reaching the open sea somewhere between Cape Otway and King Island.

About 25 million years ago these broad basalt valleys were flooded by a significant and long-lasting rise in sea level, called the Miocene Sea. When this sea receded, it left behind some interesting features – for instance, sea fossils in the sandy limestone on top of the cliffs at Flinders and Cape Schanck.

Other sediments known as Baxter Sandstones were left in the shallow waters further to the north. Limestone and marine clays were also deposited on the edge of this vast sea, especially on the Port Phillip side. Port Philip Gets that Sinking Feeling Fifteen million years ago, a massive subsidence occurred between the Selwyn fault and the Bellarine fault near Queenscliff. These faults formed a “hinge fault” with a fulcrum in the north, and a widening towards the south where the land was lowered by nearly 500 metres. The result was a huge inlet - narrow in the north and widening into Bass Strait where the vast plain and the old river mouths were submerged.

Today, Selwyn Fault can be seen as a long cliff stretching from Dromana to Cape Schanck. North of Arthurs Seat it lies a couple of kilometres out in the bay, the coast having eroded back to the more resistant rocks of Mount Martha, Mt Eliza and Olivers Hill.

The making of a Bay One million years ago, as the subsidence of the Port Phillip sunkland continued, large quantities of sand from the Pt Lonsdale side were carried towards us by westerly winds and ocean currents.

This material attached itself to the Mornington Peninsula along the cliff face of Selwyn fault and eventually built up a new land mass of over 100 square kilometres, later named the Nepean Peninsula.

This blocked off the southern part of the broad inlet and created the bay we call Port Phillip.

This extensive bay bar is far from a simple sand dune. It is a complex depositional feature created by changes in sea level during several small ice ages. With each glacial period, water was held in the ice caps and the sea level fell - only to rise again when the ice melted and waters warmed. With each rise and fall of the oceans the dune material was periodically heaped up, exposed, and rearranged.

Older dunes were covered by newer ones and their shells were compressed and cemented into hard dune limestone – a resource later mined and smelted by the early settlers of the Sorrento district, or cut into blocks for their houses.

The surface dunes of today, however, are quite young – and very moveable if not bound together by vegetation. In places, the wind has created rounded hummocks as in the “Cups” region of the renowned golf course landscapes near Cape Schanck.

This dune material doesn’t hold water and there are few streams.

In some places the bay tides would scour out a depression which, if sealed by a sand bar, would develop into a marshy vegetation area, such as the Tootgarook Swamp. continued next page...

At long last a true peninsula!

Fast forward to “today”, or strictly speaking, 20,000 years ago, and the movements along the Tyabb Fault which formed Western Port. Not only did this create a true peninsula, with water on three sides, but a region with its own distinctive personality.

The Western Port sunkland was too recent and too shallow to experience the rise and fall of the sea with the various ice ages and there was no complex bay bar like the Nepean Peninsula. The closest was a beautiful hooked sand spit called Sandy Point stretching eastwards along the coast from Somers near Cerberus.

The lowering of Western Port brought a considerable amount of silt flowing in from the Koo Wee Rup Swamp to the north.

The tides, hindered by French Island, pushed it back and forth and created the extensive tidal mud flats and unique mangrove ecosystems found north of Stony Point.
