A SPOT OF Boules

étanque. Ever heard of it? No, that’s ok because neither has the vast majority of the population I’ll wager. And yet, unbeknownst to me and possibly to a great many of you reading this story, we have a well-established Pétanque Club right here on our doorstep, in Moorooduc.

So, what is pétanque exactly? It’s a bowling game that comes from a family of games called “boules” which include some more wellknown variants such as lawn bowls and bocce. It originates in France where you are sure to find many of the locals playing it, from Provence in the south to Normandy in the north. It rose to prominence in the early 19th century and is now well and truly entrenched as the national pastime.

Perhaps, the last place you’d expect to find a Pétanque Club is in the rural area of Moorooduc right here on the Mornington Peninsula.

How did this all happen I wondered? “The club was formed some six years ago by a small group of like-minded people,” said Jim Crawshaw, President of the Mornington Peninsula Pétanque Club (MPPC). “Initially we played pétanque at the Dromana bocce club facility and then on other grounds throughout the Mornington Peninsula Shire until the Shire Council provided the club with a specific area at Moorooduc Reserve in Derril Road.”

Pétanque, like bocce and lawn bowls, involves trying to get the “boules” – heavy metal balls – as close as possible to the “cochonnet” which translates into “little piglet” in English and is otherwise known as the jack. Players stand within a throwing circle that is created in a gravel playing area or “piste” and with their feet planted, they launch their boules towards the jack in a palm-down, back-handed, flickof-the-wrist motion. Pétanque can be played in teams of three or in singles with each player getting three boules. Closest boules to the jack score a point and the first to thirteen points wins.

It all sounds a bit complex and competitive but Jim assured me it’s neither, but then went on to add it can be both. “We are essentially a social club,” he said. “We provide a relaxed atmosphere set amongst a beautiful rural setting where people can play, relax and socialise.”

Friendship, social activities and relaxation are important to the members of the MPPC; a quick look at the very full social calendar on their website says a lot about how the club sees itself and what it considers important. All of which is in keeping with the origins of the game in France where wine and cheese, gentle conversation and a convivial spirit were as much a part of coming together to play, as was throwing a boule. Not that it’s all wine and cheese platters. “We have our own monthly club championship competition,” said Jim, “and the occasional game with other clubs on the Peninsula. It requires quite a lot of skill if you want to be competitive but it’s also a game that can be played by all ages and by all skill levels. It’s even a great game for those with restricted abilities.”

Talking to Jim you get a sense of how passionate he is about his club and how much he wants to tell everyone about it and make it as welcoming as possible. “The Club has a policy of allowing three free consecutive afternoons without cost,” he said. “We want people of all ages and abilitIES to come and try this game and become part of our special place. Even for people without any experience, we have rule books available and plenty of support from club members that will help you develop your skills.”

I get the feeling that it doesn’t really matter how good you are or become at Mornington Peninsula Pétanque Club, what matters most is that you are part of a club that places emphasis on friendship and coming together through social occasions like BBQ’s and drinks and nibbles. It seems to me a club that strives to make you feel welcome and included no matter your age or ability. And they even have a club anthem that is sung – chardonnay in hand I imagine - to the tune of Advance Australia Fair:

And while she won’t necessarily feel comfortable with the title of survivor, she deserves that accolade too. Karen’s no stranger to set backs; she’s fought hard to battle breast cancer and is a woman equally strong in mind as in body.

Boxing and fitness have helped her rise form the knock downs.

Karen’s love of gym life started in her teens. The fourteen yearold sports mad Chelsea teen accompanied her mum to a fitness session at the local gym and was immediately hooked. Beyond the exercise, she loved the energy, empowerment and working through challenges.

She soon put these values to the test. At sixteen, a fall resulted in spinal surgery and medical advice that her sporting days were over. With her mum’s support, Karen refused to accept that diagnosis. “I’m really bloody stubborn,” she admits “I was going to rehabilitate and get on with things, no matter what.”

Exercising to recovery, Karen reinvigorated her plans to work in the fitness industry. She worked in reception and management in Chelsea and Parkdale gyms, teaching Boxercise and circuit

classes while undertaking her Fitness Instruction and Personal Training qualifications at Frankston’s Chisolm TAFE.

And she gained her accreditation as a boxing coach, learning from Australia’s best at Boxing Victoria and Boxing Australia Coach and Athlete Development Camps Moving with her children to Capel Sound in 2001 Karen “found my true sense of belonging; we weren’t just a number like in the city.

I knew this was a great place for my kids to grow up.”

With accreditations from Boxing Australia and Fitness Australia, Karen works with Recreation Sorrento and Tonic Gym, channelling her love of “balance, movement and empowerment” into a compassionate teaching philosophy of helping others.

“I teach from life experience – both my spinal accident and my breast cancer saw me learn how I could work through my mental and physical challenges, coming out the other end a better person. I know those dark times, and how much joy there is in the smallest of victories.

Watching my students find that within themselves is fantastic.”

It was in 2015 that Karen received the news she had Stage 2 breast cancer. “I took it pretty calmly, then just got on with what needed to be done”. “Breast cancer taught me so much. You learn a lot about yourself; what’s precious in life and what’s bull.” continued next page...

We’re all in the same boat, it doesn’t matter who we are

Four rounds of "chemo" and six weeks of daily radiation took their toll, but training kept her going when she was well enough. “Boxing gave me balance during this time, my teaching gave me purpose. I learnt to hold boxing pads with one hand, and was so grateful that clients kept coming back. I kept providing for my family, and was surrounded by people who cared about me. There was a lot love in those classes – it was the best recovery.”

Karen’s an equally compassionate supporter of others doing it tough. Her classes are filled with people working through their own personal challenges and set-backs.

She’s taught the “balance of boxing and hand eye coordination“ to Parkinson’s Disease patients, built confidence and resilience amongst kids disengaged in the classroom, coached community groups and Men’s Shed blokes, and trained others struggling with self-esteem, and mental and physical health challenges.

Karen has also organised charity events Boxing for Breast Cancer and Fight for Cebby with Lululemon Sorrento becoming an active supporter of her work.

“I want to live a purposeful life, because I’ve had to fight hard for this. It’s matters that I make a difference to others. As a trainer, I’m now more aware than ever that people make a choice to come to my classes, I’m grateful they’re here and I try to be more in tune with what their processing themselves.”

Beyond the gym, it’s the outdoors where Karen comes alive.

Migrating from England to Australia as a young child, her parents were fascinated by the Australian bush and hikes to The Prom, The Grampians and Gunnamatta formed a backdrop to her childhood.

“I have such gratitude for the outdoors,” reveals Karen. “Your body and thoughts take up equal space together.” She’s a familiar face running the tracks of Mornington Peninsula’s National Parks, along Bushrangers Bay, Greens Bush and through Point Nepean.

“Being outdoors is so grounding. I gravitate to the ocean or the bush to reclaim my solitude.”

With the coronavirus pandemic temporarily closing her training sessions, Karen is reflective. “This virus is a powerful equalizer.

We’re all in the same boat, it doesn’t matter who we are. What matters is how we are. This is the time to be kind, to be aware of how we care of others, of our health and what we do have.”

That positivity is something we all need to propel us forward right now, a strength we can draw on. A fitting lesson from a warrior woman who has punched through the tough times.

OH YES, OH Yes!

R

aised in the UK, Carl Cox rose to mainstage stardom in the early 90s as a mobile DJ playing vinyl electronica to the masses.

Known as one of the pioneers of Britain’s house music scene and one of the world’s biggest names in techno, Carl Cox moved to Frankston 15 years ago. Carl’s career as a DJ spans three decades, although his early musical memories are from his childhood. His parents moved from Barbados to the UK to live and work in the 1960s and Carl was born in Manchester in 1962.

“I come from a musical family. In Barbados, they have a three-month long festival called the Crop Over. This celebrates the end of the sugar cane season with parties and music,” says Carl.

Carl was exposed to music from an early age, with his father playing records and hosting parties for his friends.

“I was actually a DJ from around eight years old in houses for my mum and dads family and friends. So, I was kind of bitten by the bug early on.”

Carl describes himself as humble man, who came from a working-class family. He grew up riding push bikes, playing football and soon developed a love for motorcars and motorbikes.

With both music and motorsports driving his passions, Carl began as a DJ at his school’s discos, at birthday parties and at weddings. In the 70's and 80s he played funk, soul and jazz in public venues while also working as a scaffolder. In 1984, he hit a crossroad and had to decide whether to continue in the building industry or pursue a career as a DJ. “I really enjoyed playing music for people, so I dropped scaffolding to DJ. At the time, there was no career as a DJ. You had to make it for yourself, but I was helped by the Prince’s Trust,” he says.

The Prince's Trust is a charity founded in 1976 by Prince Charles to support young British people starting out in business. Acceptance meant that, at eighteen, Carl attended business school for thirteen weeks and became a self-employed full-time DJ. Carl was an early proponent of house and techno: “I’ve always been into the future of everything. The future of cars. The future of music. I grew up with every single track I bought being made by a band or an orchestra. Once disco music arrived on the scene and I heard electronica music being made by musicians such as Spandau Ballet, Kraftwerk and Human League, I thought “wow” this is something different. I was completely into it straight away.

Carl was influenced by the innovative new house music sounds coming out of Detroit, Chicago and New York in the early 80's. He was one of the first DJs to play these tracks in the UK. “The first electronic track I bought was Chip E – Time to Jack and that was it for me. As soon as I heard that record and anything that sounded like that I would buy it. I built up my collection and became known as the person playing this genre.”

By jumping on board the night train to house music during the 80's, Carl quickly climbed the ranks of DJ notoriety. His commercial success as an international DJ and music producer has seen him spin the wheels of steel in every corner of the globe, become a regular on BBC Radio 1's Essential Mix and a resident DJ for sixteen years at the legendary former dance club Space on the party island of Ibiza.

After travelling through Europe with his electronic tunes he was invited to countries all over the world, including Australia.

Carl was playing a lot of music the Australian DJ’s didn’t have, so it was an exciting time for those in the industry.

Carl has been playing house and techno for thirty years and has travelled widely. His first love is Ibiza, where he has been playing his music every summer since 1984. His second is Australia.

“Every time I’d travel to Australia, I’d always feel comfortable being in Melbourne. But I didn’t really travel outside of St Kilda or the heart of the city and I thought there must be more to life here.”

DJ friends Eric Powell and John Course introduced him to their homes on the Mornington Peninsula, which would influence Carl’s decision to make a semi-permanent move to Australia.

“One day we hit Beach Road and travelled down over Olivers Hill to Mount Martha, Mornington and Arthurs Seat and I thought ‘wow look at this’. I’d been coming to Melbourne for years and never knew about it.”

Fast-forward fifteen years and Carl calls the Mornington Peninsula 'home' during the summer months. He has been spinning tunes up and down the globe spending April to September in the UK and Ibiza, returning to the Peninsula from September to March.

Fully embracing life on the Peninsula, Carl Cox and friend Eric Powell started their Mobile Disco gigs in Dromana in 2005.

It started after the two friends toured wineries, sampling food and wine. After chatting to the owners of the Stillwater Restaurant at the Crittenden Estate, they came up with the idea to play a relaxed soul and funk session on a Sunday afternoon. The Mobile Disco concept was born with around 150 people in attendance at their first gig. The popularity of Eric and Carl’s Mobile Disco events quickly outgrew Stillwater at Crittenden, which would often sell out within weeks.

The Mobile Disco also travelled to Melbourne with over 10,000 people in attendance at their Myer Music Bowl event. Since then, Eric and Carl have been playing their favourite disco, funk and soul blends all over Australia, New Zealand and Bali.

In 2020, Carl and Eric’s Mobile Disco returned to the Mornington Peninsula, where the two DJ’s played their favourite tunes at The Briars.

Carl is known as the “Oh Yes, Oh Yes!” man on the club scene. His famous phrase originated in Ibiza almost twenty years ago.

“Most DJs don’t connect with the people in the audience and I didn’t want to be part of that. At Space in Ibiza, I would jump on the microphone and speak to the crowd. During one set in 2001, I said “Oh Yes, Oh Yes!” and the crowd went wild so it became a signature phrase and something people wanted to hear whenever I played.”

What’s next for Carl? Motorsports and drag racing will be part of his circuit alongside his new musical journey. Cars will be Carl’s priority in the years to come, although his love for music will never fade and his gigs on the Mornington Peninsula are set to continue. Oh Yes, Oh Yes!

The Ticonderoga This 4-masted Yankee clipper with the rather exotic name was built in New York in 1849. It was named after the fort in Essex County, New York State, where a great battle had taken place in July, 1758 during the Seven Years War between the British and French. Apparently the word itself is Iroquois, meaning either the sound of flowing water, the meeting of two waters, or even the land between two waters. The Ticonderoga, painted jet black with a fine white stripe running its length, was a particularly finelooking vessel with graceful, even delicate, lines.

The Legacy of Dr. James Veitch.

As indicated in the inscription, the Assistant Surgeon on the ill-fated vessel was Dr. James Veitch. The young surgeon worked tirelessly, both on the vessel and in the primitive conditions of the tented camp on the shoreline, trying to save those he could. He was assisted in his task by a young Highland woman passenger, Annie Morrison, who acted as his nurse. He later married Annie and settled in central Victoria where James Veitch assumed the role of a quiet country doctor and local councillor.

The story of the Ticonderoga was passed down through generations of the Veitch family but it was left to James’ greatgreat-grandson, Michael Veitch, to record the event: “Hell Ship”, a gripping narrative account of the voyage based on eye-witness testimony, letters, subsequent accounts, and the evidence of the Royal Commission, was published in 2018. Subsequently Michael Veitch created “Hell Ship: The Journey of the Ticonderoga”, a one man theatre piece in which he takes the audience on his greatgreat-grandfather’s journey.

A moving night can be anticipated when the play is performed at Cube 37, Frankston Arts Centre coming soon.

rom the red gum river country of northern Victoria to the Kimberley, Arnhem Land, Central Desert and the Pilbara, Everywhen Artspace in Flinders is continuing to bring the art of Aboriginal Australia to the Mornington Peninsula and beyond in a new format.

With art galleries required to close under Victoria’s stage 2 and 3 restrictions Everywhen’s gallery space in Cook Street, Flinders has been temporarily closed since late March.

“We’re very supportive of the necessity to close for health reasons,” says Everywhen’s co director Susan McCulloch. “However of course as with hundreds of thousands of other Australian businesses whose services have been severely impacted by Covid-19, we’ve needed to reinvent ourselves as much as possible.”

The gallery, which has been showing Aboriginal art on the Peninsula since 2009, is known for its talks, private viewings and other events that offer engagement with the art on show so Susan and her co-business partner Emily McCulloch Childs - who are both also writers, publishers and speakers on art - have created an ongoing series of online exhibitions, mini-book online catalogues and videos of curator’s floor talks.

Indigenous people are amongst the highest risk of any in Australia and many artists from the communities the McCullochs represent in the Kimberley, the Pilbara, the Western Desert and Arnhem Land have been able to return to small homeland communities.

Kaiela artists initiated a special research and art project for the exhibition that explores the once rich vegetation of the beautiful Goulburn (Kaiela) and Murray (Dangala) river areas - bringing them back to life in watercolours, weavings, carvings and acrylics.

Everywhen present new exhibitions every two weeks, hanging the Flinders gallery to match and leaving lights on so works can be seen by passers-by.

“The response has been very positive, however it’s a very challenging time for galleries and all the arts at the moment,” says Susan. “ We’re very conscious of supporting our artists, keeping our gallery viable and of bringing joyous and uplifting art to as wide an audience as possible in whatever ways we can.”

“We were just about to open the Kaiela show when Covid-19 hit and had a great opening planned that included didgeridoo playing by Kaiela’s Eric Brown and a weaving demonstration by Suzanne Atkinson and Eva Ponting,” says Susan.

estled along Arthurs Seat Road in Red Hill is the picturesque Red Hill Truffles farm. Stretching across 40 acres of rolling hills with orchards, you can smell the wood fire burning and hear the birds chirping from the entrance. Jenny McAuley inherited the property from her uncle in 2003, but her great grandfather was the first to own the land dating back to 1886. Originally an apple orchard, she saw the opportunity to produce something different. Seven generations later, Jenny has four varieties of trees including oak and hazelnuts and harvests mainly black truffle and summer truffles. continued next page...

Truffle growing isn’t easy and takes years to perfect. However, Jenny McAuley believes she has finally mastered the art of growing truffles, just in time for the coming season. But with local Mornington Peninsula restaurants temporarily closed or offering takeaways only, Jenny is worried what this season will offer.

With the season beginning in June and running till mid-August. Jenny said as from June she will be opening her doors from Wednesday to Sunday to sell her truffle and truffle products.

But she will be leaving a majority of her truffles in the ground as she predicts there won't be the same demand as usual whilst we remain in lock down. With only a 14 day shelf life, Jenny will sell on request. None-the-less she is excited by the amount of truffle that will be available. Walking through the orchard with Jenny and her beautiful dog, Maddie [who is in training to hunt truffles] you could tell by the ground surrounding the bottom of the trees that there will be an abundance of product.

Originally a social worker, Jenny’s curiosity and love for truffles was ignited during a trip to Italy where she “Chased truffle hunters through Italy.” Captivated by the truffle aroma, she said to her friend “I can grow this” but her friend thought she was absolutely mad. But as soon as Jenny returned to Australia, she began researching and realised that there was only a small industry in Australia, mainly in south Western Australia and Tasmania. Jenny knew she had the perfect property with good soil at nearly perfect ph level. The climate wasn’t exactly what the truffles required but was very close. “They like hot summers and cold winters with a bit of frost”. But truffle growing isn't easy. Jenny first planted trees in 2005 and although it could take up to 12 years to produce your first harvest, she received her first truffle in 2010.

Now with over 2700 trees, including four varieties of oak and hazelnuts, Jenny predominantly produces black truffle (perigord)

sometimes known as ‘black winter truffle’. She also produces summer truffle which has a lighter aroma and is used in cooking similar to the black truffle. But she has also been experimenting with ‘the truffle of all truffles’, the white truffle (borchii). It has a stronger aroma, but according to Jenny, “No one has successfully grown white truffle in Australia yet. White truffle is perfect with desserts and ice creams.” But determining when truffles are ripe requires training: “I’ve had to be trained to smell the aroma. It’s taken years and included extensive courses.”

Jenny’s farm doesn’t stop at just truffles though. In collaboration with Max's restaurant in Red Hill she produces truffle products including truffle butter, honey, salt, paste and even truffle eggs.

Her social worker background has equipped her with the skills to network and she has collaborated with numerous local businesses such as Bass & Flinders, Red Hill Brewery, and various cheese producers. She said, “I’ve encouraged other places that sell gin, beer or cheese to try my truffle. I offer them truffle to experiment, and we’ve produced truffle gin and vodka, beer and cheese.”

As winter is usually a quiet time, Jenny and her business partner Danielle Field, who owns Mornington Peninsula Experience, have created ‘Hunt & Gather’ where the public can hunt for truffle whilst learning about truffle cultivation. They offer this experience online at Mornington Experience and through local restaurants and wineries. Usually one of Jenny’s trusted sidekicks, Maddie or Thomas, her beautiful English Springer Spaniels will hunt with her as well. Usually this experience sells out, however since Covid-19 Jenny has had to temporarily cease her truffle tastings and hunts. I love staff coming in, because they can tell the story, about where the truffle is harvested and share that story with their customers

Covid-19 has affected so many businesses on the Mornington Peninsula and Jenny knows it will affect her business as well. Before Covid-19 Jenny loved hosting groups of people from all around the world. On Tuesdays she would have hospitality staff from local restaurants and wineries visit for a tasting and to broaden their knowledge. Jenny explained how this was important as the staff could then go back to work with knowledge and a story about her truffles, “I love staff coming in, because they can tell the story, about where the truffle is harvested and share that story with their customers.”

The Mornington Peninsula restaurants, wineries and the community have shown unconditional support for Jenny since the beginning of her journey and now are continuing to do so. “Without the local support I wouldn’t have been able to do this.” Jenny explained that the council is doing an incredible job in supporting numerous local businesses and ensuring the preservation of the green wedge. “The green wedge is absolutely critical, it’s important that the council continues to support the preservation of this land.”

2020 TRUFFLE SEASON Visit Red Hill Truffles on the Mornington Peninsula Farmgate Trail to purchase freshly unearthed truffles and delectable truffle products. he ambitious idea of opening The Milbri came about whilst owners, the two Chris’s (Miller & Fabri) were on a well earned break between lunch and dinner service at their roles at an eatery on the Mornington Peninsula. The name as you may have noticed is an amalgamation of their last names, to keep it easy.

The idea would encompass a seven day brunch, lunch and dinner venue with an emphasis on fresh, local and seasonal ingredients.

This produce would be the backbone of their Latin-Asian inspired menu, inspired by Fabri’s extensive travels through South America.

Drinks, drinks and more drinks were a must! A big long bar full of spirits and liquors on the shelf, and a wine wall encompassing Latin and local wine was inevitable.

Brunch and coffee had to be great, and sticking with the local theme, they found a great roaster in Little Rebel (Dromana) who they worked with to create the award winning ‘Milbri Blend’.

The Milbri has stayed strong through the COVID-19 pandemic trading seven nights offering pickup and delivery and it’s no wonder why. After being established for almost six years in Rosebud, they

have a loyal following and are ranked number one for dining venues on Trip Advisor in the area.

Flinders

Flinders is a town south of Melbourne, located on the Mornington Peninsula at the point where Western Port meets Bass Strait. Flinders is located close to the southern tip of the Mornington Peninsula, fronting onto the calm waters of Western Port in the west and offering a rugged coastline of cliffs and ocean beaches along its southern frontage onto Bass Strait.

• Flinders is an appealing holiday destination due to its scenic coastal location amongst rolling green hills and the fact that commercial development seems to have forgotten this town, instead preserving the area's natural beauty and scenic views.

• Attractions along the coast include Bass Park which provides spectacular views down to the Flinders Jetty and across Western Port, as well as being home to a monument dedicated to George Bass and Matthew Flinders who were the first explorers in the area.

• The Flinders Golf Course is situated above the cliffs and ocean beaches to the south, overlooking the Mushroom Reef Marine Sanctuary and bordering the Mornington Peninsula National Park. To the west of Flinders, just off Boneo Road, is The Blowhole which includes walking tracks along the rocky coastline and over huge bluestone boulders.

History

St Mark's Anglican Church Dromana

estled between a three-storey apartment block and a busy shopping plaza is a little, limestone church, dwarfed by its modern neighbours. When these places were built it was feared the little church would all but disappear in the shadows of these giants, but the contrast of the buildings around it just emphasises the pioneering charm of St Mark's Anglican Church Dromana.

In the 1870's, the fledgling community’s worship services were held on the foreshore amongst the banksia opposite Mrs Warren’s confectionery shops and tearooms, but it was soon decided that the township needed a more formal place of worship. In 1877 a meeting was held in Rudduck's Store and it was decided that a church would be built for all denominations to use; attending this historic meeting were Mr H Robinson, Messers Barnett, Snell, N. Dyson, Burns, Boag, Ninnes, W. Gibson, A Gibson and J Gibson, J Cairns, G Henderson and N Rudduck. After many places were considered, a site was chosen and plans drawn up, but over the ensuring few months this attempt failed through lack of interest.

Other attempts also failed due to dissention amongst the many strong personalities resulting in resignations and replacements. In the end it took thirty-nine months and many hurdles to finally complete this ‘unified’ church. It was decided that the Church of England and the Presbyterians would take turnabout on alternative

Sundays. However, it seems harmony was never quite achieved and arguments ensued over various issues like the care and maintenance of the lamps and the position of the organ! Dissension just got worse and by 1886 the relationship had broken down irretrievably and, after more resignations, only two men remained.

George McLear (1840-1918), born in Campbelltown, New South Wales of Irish parents represented the Church of England and Walter Gibson (1829-1916), born in Scotland, represented the Presbyterians; both men were notorious for thwarting each other and it appears they simply wore everyone else down. McLear was known for his rigidity when it came to rules and Gibson would not compromise - one man wanted to sell the church, whereas the other wanted to keep it and neither of them would budge. Family dinners must have been interesting because Walter Gibson's son Adam was married to George McLear's sister Mary Ann! All appeared helpless and for the ensuring four years a deadlock remained. How were they to break this impasse and come to a decision as to what was going to happen to the church? Peace came in the shape of a store owner in 1891 when it was discovered that Nelson Rudduck, a Londoner (1849-1935), may have resigned as a trustee but, his name was never removed from the trustee’s list. Rudduck stepped back in as an Independent, broke the deadlock and the sale of the church finally went ahead. This original interdominational

church was sold for cash to the Presbyterian congregation and, on 19 September 1891 the net profit of five hundred and fourteen pounds, eight shillings and sixpence was split three-ways.

During this deadlock, on the 17 January 1891, members of the Church of England had met and decided it was time they had their own church in Dromana. In July 1891 the Bishop of Melbourne, Dr Field Flowers Goe and Mrs Goe, attended a service where the Bishop confirmed sixteen people and the following day there was an event to raise funds for the construction of a stone church in Dromana for the Church of England congregation.

On 24 September 1891 a meeting decided to purchase a fortyfoot block of land abutting The Esplanade (Point Nepean Road) which went through to Gibson Street. With architects Hyndman and Bates supervising and solicitors Wynne and Co. keeping a close eye on proceedings, building was commenced by George Morce of Sorrento, with the memorial stone being laid on the 7th November 1892.

R Adams (possibly Captain Robert Henry Adams) of Rosebud donated 10,000 bricks which were transported to the site by George McLear. Godfrey Burdett Wilson carted the sand and metal for the foundations and the stone was carted by John Dyson. The church was designed in the neo-gothic style and constructed of dunn limestone with red brick masonry blocks on the corners and rendered parapets at the gable end.

St Mark’s Anglican Church Dromana was dedicated on 7 April 1893 by the aforementioned Bishop of Melbourne, Dr Goe and assisted by the Revs. B N White and Frederick Willcox. One hundred and twenty people attended the service.

The church bell has done more over the years than draw the faithful to their services; it was also used to warn the townsfolk of any emergencies including bushfires and landslides at The Rocks (Anthony’s Nose); if that bell rang, the people gathered.

Unfortunately, the bell is now permanently welded into silence after it was discovered it was in danger of falling onto the footpath the next time it was rung, bringing bell and tower down on to some poor unsuspecting pedestrian. One hundred years of ringing a bell in a limestone building had taken its toll.

The building which now houses St Mark’s Op Shop, was once the parish hall. Built in 1958 it hosted many a local dinner dance, community gathering, wedding reception and Sunday School activities. In 1981, the old vestry (a small room on the side of a church) was demolished and replaced with an entry foyer (known as a Narthex), toilets were also added and in 1988 O’Donohue Street was made, providing new access into the church.

By the 2010's St Mark's was rapidly outgrowing its premises and it was decided a transportable building would be installed. In 2012 a generous donation of $12,000 was provided by the Bendigo Community Bank of Rye, Rosebud and Dromana to allow this to happen. This afforded a place to be used for Sunday School and is affectionately known as ‘Mark’s Place’. It is also used for meetings and storage.

The stained-glass windows of St Mark’s were all installed by Brooks Robinson & Co. of Elizabeth Street, Melbourne, a major stained-glass firm which started in the 1850s as importers of glass but, by the 1880s, were producing their own. Brooks Robinson & Co. employed a number of different glass artists over the years, so there is often considerable variation in the style and quality of their windows. Generally, the earlier glass is much better than that produced in the later years. One of the reasons for this is the difficulty of getting good artists and most firms re-used designs rather than drawing up new ones, so you will often see the same windows in a number of churches. There are windows by Brooks Robinson & Co in many Victorian churches.

There are eight stained-glass windows in St Mark’s and whenever the church is open visitors are welcome to come and see them: "God is Love" is a memorial to Mrs Maria Wilson. This window depicts a girl and a boy reflecting Jesus’ love of children. When the Narthex was added in 1981, this window ceased drawing light from outside and is now rarely seen in its full beauty.

"The Good Samaritan" is a memorial to Ben Wilson. This window is a representation of the parable of a man who is set upon by

robbers, a priest passes by without helping him as does another man (notice the distant figure down the path).

“The Birth of Jesus”is a memorial to Coralie Violet and Francis Alfred Burmah. This double window is in two parts, the first part on the left is the representation of the Nativity with Joseph, Mary, the baby Jesus and a lamb. The second part of the window is a representation of Jesus in the temple where he was consecrated.

"St Francis of Assisi" is a window dedicated to Kimberley John Bailey who died in 1972 aged 14 and represents Saint Francis of Assisi, the Patron Saint of Animals. It is interesting to note the inclusion of Australian native animals in this design. The artist for this window was Mr Derek Pearse.

"Jesus Heals the Paralytic" is a memorial to Dr James Charles Weld, one of the first doctors in the District, who died in 1923. It portrays one of Jesus’ healing miracles and was designed by Brooks Robinson in 1923.

"Faith" is a memorial to Robert and Mary Bodycomb, their children and descendants including their great-grandson Edward Miles Beaumont who was a Pilot Officer. This window depicts the nature of Faith and is based on the Parable of the Ten Virgins.

Faith is represented by the female figure, ever ready for the return of Christ, her lamp lit for God who calls people out of the darkness; the cross a sign of being true to Christ.

"The Sanctuary Windows" were the first stained glass windows placed in the church and are a memorial to Godfrey Burdett Wilson who died in 1919. The main window is in a traditional style and forms a triptych representing the ascension of Christ. The small windows underneath, which are in a more modern style, also form a triptych and are a symbolic representation of Jesus - the crown represents Him as more than a king, the chalice in the middle is the vessel used during Communion and the palm represents Jesus’

entry into Jerusalem.

“St Mark” Patronal Window was given by the parishioners and friends of St Mark’s as part of the church Centenary celebrations of 1992-1993 in thanksgiving for the pioneers of the church. St Mark, the writer of one of the Gospels, and obviously represented here because of the name of the church, is often depicted with a lion, which is his symbol.

St. Mark’s is the Mornington Peninsula’s third oldest Anglican stone church and is only pre-dated by St. John’s in Sorrento (1874) and St. Andrew’s in Rye (1882).

From the beginning, St Mark’s was part of the Parochial District of Sorrento but over time it became part of a new parish with Rosebud and McCrae. In 1988 St Mark’s combined with St George’s in Red Hill forming, yet again, another new parish until 2010, when it became an independent Parish and welcomed The Rev Paul Woodcock as its minister.

These days St Mark's is a thriving little

church community with regular Sunday services for both traditional and family worship, a monthly healing service, regular prayer groups, a Wednesday morning service, Bible Study groups, a craft group, family activities and involvement with various community initiatives and projects. It is hoped in the future that St Mark's Dromana will have the funds to grow again to meet this ever-expanding community, but still keep the beauty and spirit of their unique little pioneer church.
