M

eaghan Densley began her life-long love affair with sport at the age of eight when her mum took her and her twin brother down to the local Frankston Yacht Club and enrolled them both into sailing programs, and she’s been there ever since. Her leadership qualities shone through from an early age with Meaghan running the club’s ‘Learn to Sail Program’ in her late teens, and then joining the committee of the club at age twenty-one.

From there, it was a stellar rise to the position of Club Commodore in 2013 at the youthful age of twenty-six, making her the first female Commodore of her club and the youngest female Commodore ever in the state.

I find the biggest challenge for women in sport is, well, women.

We don’t tend to put ourselves first, we put our children first, our partners, our families

The journey to the top was not without its challenges. While Frankston YC was generally a supportive environment, it wasn’t always the case when Meaghan represented her club in the wider sporting community. “When I attended meetings, people automatically assumed I was there to take the minutes and not to take charge.” She was also often treated differently to male colleagues, explaining that, “I was often ignored in conversation and when I was addressed directly, I was often addressed as ‘love’. One particular man told me that I should step down because, ‘Women, genetically, are not made to lead’.”

How did she overcome these prejudices? Determination, hard work, results and strong mentors. “I was lucky to have great mentors,” Meaghan said. “Strong leaders, both male and female, that I could lean on when times were tough and who generously offered their time and support. And that’s exactly what I hope to do for the next generation coming through, to give back because so much was given to me. To let the next wave of female leaders know that if they have the courage to jump in there will be people like me ready to help, guide and support. To have their backs so to speak.”

At twenty-seven, Meaghan added the General Manager’s role at Cheltenham Golf Club to her resume and again faced challenges from members who doubted someone so young could have the leadership capabilities to move the club forward. But she did, with the help of her previous leadership experience and support from mentors. She now works for Golf Australia as a Regional Development Officer, working with the golf clubs on the Peninsula to help develop their youth and women’s programs.

“This may sound strange,” Meaghan said, “but in my opinion as I travel around the Peninsula working with clubs, I find the biggest challenge for women in sport is, well, women. We don’t tend to put ourselves first, we put our children first, our partners, our families.

We don’t ask for help from those around us to allow us the time to go and participate. And a lot of women that are playing sport are not helping to bring the next generation through because they had to do it tough to earn their right to play and everyone else should have to do the same.”

But times are changing according to Meaghan. Sporting bodies are increasingly aware of the importance of growing the number of girls and women participating in sport, for healthy living reasons and to ensure the longevity of their sport. Meaghan’s work with Australian Sailing and Golf Australia has given her confidence that the sporting community will have many more girls and women playing sport in the future, with both bodies providing funding for staff and equipment that focus on girls and women’s sport.

And not just females playing sport but in leadership positions within sport. All over the Peninsula right now there are women leading clubs, soccer clubs, football clubs all sorts of clubs. “The landscape is changing,” Meaghan explained. “There are courses to develop female leaders in sport such as Sport Australia’s ‘Women Leaders in Sport Program’ and funding available for women to attend these courses. We also have governing bodies like Vicsport mandating that 40% of the boards of peak sporting bodies must be women. So change is definitely starting to happen.”

Meaghan hopes that one day the playing fields, beaches and clubs of the Peninsula will be full of men and women, girls and boys, all enjoying their sport. She is actively working towards that goal in her role at Golf Australia. “I hope that I can be an agent for positive change for girls and women in sport by developing programs at the sailing club and on the golf course that eliminate barriers and encourage more women and girls to at least try playing sport. My mantra is, jump in and give it a go, you don’t have to be good at it, you just need to have fun.”

Meaghan certainly lives by her own words. She has definitely jumped in and given it a go, overcoming hurdles and pushing through barriers to show the way so that others may follow her lead.

Even the biggest hurdle of all, the onset of her diabetes three days before her Year 12 exams, could not stop her from following her passion for sport and leadership.

“Diabetes has challenged every aspect of my life. There have been periods where I have wanted to give up and just stop, but I didn’t. I figured I could sit on the couch and ask 'why me?' Or I could make the most of the situation. I have learned to live with diabetes and not let it rule my life.”

Indeed, Meaghan Densley has not let diabetes rule her life, showing the type of courage that has helped smash stereotypes, crash through barriers and maybe, just maybe, inspire a whole new generation of girls on the Peninsula to play sport and become leaders in their chosen sport.

ALEXANDRA the Great

O

bserving seven-year-old Alexandra (Alex) Bacon’s bright and spunky disposition, you would never guess that the road leading to today was as bumpy as it has been. After she was born Alex’s family had no idea of the emotional rollercoaster they were about to ride.

When ten weeks old, Alex was diagnosed with a life-threatening condition called Biliary Atresia, in which the ducts that carry bile from the liver to the gallbladder are either absent or fail to develop normally. Bile is then trapped inside the liver, causing irreparable damage. It was a devastating diagnosis for her family.

Alex became a patient at the Royal Children’s Hospital and when three months old she underwent a Kasai Procedure, which surgically bypasses the failing bile ducts and prolongs the life of the liver.

Despite the surgeon’s best efforts, Alex’s liver was damaged beyond repair and she needed a transplant to survive. Due to her extensive liver damage, Alex failed to gain weight and developed Osteopenia, a condition where the bones become soft, causing nine fractures in fourteen months.

When we were told there was a liver available we just cried and cried Another setback occurred when Alex began to have respiratory arrests. Her longest arrest was a gut-wrenching fourteen minutes.

Sondra, Alex’s mum recalls the terrifying situation, “She started choking in the RCH clinic waiting room and before I knew it, she turned dark blue and stopped breathing. Our gastroenterologist, Dr George Alex, came running down the corridor and actually resuscitated her himself.

From there Alex was taken to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit where she was intubated for further tests to be completed. Alex was then diagnosed with Tracheomalacia, which meant the cartilage in her windpipe hadn’t developed properly, causing her tracheal walls to collapse and prevent breathing.

“It was incredibly overwhelming to meet with so many specialists and realise that she had developed another condition as a result of her failing liver. In order to be able to have the transplant she had to undergo a tracheotomy which was another major operation. It was the most stressful time of our lives but we knew we were in the best hands at the RCH”, says Sondra.

Alex spent a week recovering from the operation when her family were told there was a healthy liver available.

Across town in another Melbourne hospital Julie Wilson's 18-yearold son Brodie had tragically passed away after having an asthma attack. Many years earlier Julie had signed up to be a donor and had the discussion with Brodie. She knew Brodie’s wishes and made the life-saving decision to donate her son’s organs.

After fourteen long months the Bacon family received the call they had been desperate for.

“When we were told there was a liver available we just cried and cried. We thought of the family who had made the hardest decision to give our little girl and others another chance of life. It was such an emotional time and mixed feelings of relief and sadness”.

After being in the operating theatre for nearly fourteen hours, Alex’s marathon surgery was a success. “Seeing her after the transplant was very overwhelming, but we were ecstatic and grateful that it all went well,” recalls Sondra.

Six years passed and Sondra joined the Donor and Recipients Group Australia on Facebook. Julie had also joined the group after Brodie’s passing hoping to connect with his recipients. Julie came across a post asking people to type in their transplant anniversary.

Since organ donation must happen as soon as possible, Brodie’s date would match that of his recipients. Julie couldn’t help but scroll through and check the dates. There, she found Sondra’s comment with the same numbers.

The matching dates could not be ignored. The two women exchanged private messages and got to know each other over the phone.

At present in Australia, donor families can send letters to the recipient family through the organisation Donate Life. However all personal information including the name, age, and sex of the donor is removed.

The two women decided that if Sondra sent the anonymous letter to Donate Life, and if Julie received it, that this was definitely not a coincidence. Three weeks later, Sondra’s letter arrived at Julie’s.

Through the power of social media via The Donor and Recipients Group Australia page on Facebook, the two families have connected and have met up. The two families’ bond was immediate and everlasting. The emotional experience of meeting in person left the Bacon family at a loss for words. Without the selfless act from Julie’s son, Alex would not be alive today.

Alex has become only the 50th person in Australia to meet her donor family. “It’s a very unique experience to meet our donor family, and be able to say thank you to Julie face to face as most recipients never get a chance to do that,” says Sondra. Seeing Alex doing so well is also a big part of Julie’s healing and she is understandably proud of her son.

“Brodie saved Alex’s life, and other people’s lives too. It’s the greatest gift that anyone can give. Brodie is part of our family and he’s our hero now. His legacy lives on in Alex and others.

One organ and tissue donor can transform the lives of many people. Australia is a world leader for successful transplants. The donation rate has more than doubled in recent years, but there is much more that can be done.

Did you know?

Around 1,400 Australians are currently waitlisted for a transplant. A further 11,000 are on dialysis; many of them would benefit from a kidney transplant.

In 2018, 1,782 lives were transformed by 554 deceased and 238 living organ donors and their families.

In 2018, more than 10,500 Australians benefited from eye and tissue donation.

The majority of Australians (69%) are willing to donate their organs and/or tissue when they die.

In Australia, 90% of families say yes to donation when their loved one is a registered donor. This compares to the national consent rate of 64%.

If our national consent rate reaches 70%, Australia would be in the top 10 performing countries.

One in three Australians are registered donors despite the majority (69%) believing that registering is important.

Emily’s office-with-a-view is aboard the MV Naturaliste passenger ferry, operating between Stony Point, French Island and Cowes on Phillip Island in Western Port Bay. For a Red Hill girl working dive boats as a teen, this is an office she was made for. The mum of two may have taken a different route from her colleagues to captain a catamaran ferry between Phillip and French Islands, but she wouldn’t have it any other way.

Emily spent her teens in Sorrento’s Surf Life Saving Club and surfing with her mates at Pt Leo. When she was 16 years old Emily’s dad introduced her to diving and the family’s new boat - a semi-rigid zodiac. Emily was soon at the helm, and hooked. She formed an affinity with engines and maintenance as much as with the Peninsula coastline. One of three daughters, Emily’s diesel mechanic dad had her on the tools early.

Queensland dive industry, qualifying and working as a coxswain’s deck hand out of Lizard and Brampton Islands.

Travels in Europe-“it was too cold for me,”-and a break from the industry to start a family confirmed landlocked jobs were not for her.

“I’m just not suited to offices; I’m more at home in boats.”

Back in Victoria, a Western Port Ferries ad caught her eye, “I knew it was the right job for me.”

Emily’s 'right job' looks a little like an episode from the TV show Sea Change.

Locals cart bags of groceries and swap weather reports, tour operators greet guests and backpackers jostle on the jetty for the ferry. Emily loves this interaction with her passengers.

“I was his replacement boy, so he always had me tinkering and messing about with engines.”

“When the school kids board at 4:15pm it’s a little noisier – but they’re great. Locals from French Island travel to the train to head into town. We’ve got folks coming and going to Phillip Island and it gets busier at Grand Prix time.

Above water white bellied sea eagles, oyster catchers and orange bellied parrots lure birdwatchers on board, but Emily has a soft spot for some other regulars: Big Ray, the stingray, and Sammy Seal.

Out on the water she keeps constant watch for fishing boats, kayakers, barges and tugs and tidal variations, and tunes into shipping movement updates.

“They certainly make the day interesting when we see them.”

A master of efficiencies and focus, Emily managed babies while working on the ferry as a deck hand studying for her Master Certificate by correspondence, and notching up 600 days in sea time. She qualified this year as one of a select group of female Masters in Victoria.

It’s not all fair-weather sailing in the waters of Western Port.

“Some days are rough. The big wind is the most challenging and requires all our attention and focus for the crossing. We’ve got up to 95 people to look after.”

“Strong gales test us, and we cancel if the weather is really bad.”

On those days Emily and her crew get stuck into maintenance jobs back at the wharf.

“Some people think I have the cruisiest job, but it’s not really.”

It’s a long yet rewarding 14 hour day for a ferry Master. Emily and her crew of two start at 6:30am preparing the ferry for the first run. They’ll complete eight return trips to French Island and four return trips to Phillip Island weekdays before the last run of the day after 7pm.

Emily’s understated ways play down the impressive feat that at 35 years of age she is Master of the helm in what has been traditionally a male dominated profession.

She’s currently mentoring 19 year old Kiara who is completing a traineeship with parent organisation Searoad Ferries. Emily has tremendous gratitude for her own mentors, old salts of the sea who shared their wisdom.

t a recent ceremony in Government House war veteran Alan Moore was named Victorian Senior Achiever.

The Mornington Peninsula resident won the award for his outstanding contribution to the community which has included over forty years of volunteer service.

Alan was born in the family home in Camberwell on 20 November, 1920 and his only sibling, an older sister, died of infantile paralysis when quite young. After starting his schooling at Camberwell Grammar, Alan transferred to Melbourne Grammar and by his final year he was a School prefect, a House Captain,

a recipient of 1st Colours for rowing in a winning Head of the River crew and an officer in the Cadet Corps.

The most important lesson of all my volunteering and community work is to just get along with each other and learn to better understand one another

After a short time in the workforce Alan enlisted in the militia. At the time a number of militia units were being combined to form the 39th Battalion for service in the tropics. Raised in October, 1941, the 39th was soon despatched to New Guinea to defend the territory against Japanese attack. Alan, a 1st Lieutenant, was one of the initial members.

In July and August of 1942, the unit was heavily engaged along the Kokoda Track as they attempted to hold out against the Japanese until reinforcements could be brought up from Port Moresby.

The Battalion was subsequently involved in fighting around Buna, Gona, and Sanananda. Such was their involvement in these battles that, by the time the unit was withdrawn, they could only muster 32 men of the 1,666 who had served in its ranks. Alan can recall the feeling of total exhaustion that he experienced at Sanananda, not helped by recurring bouts of malaria and dysentery.

The 39th Battalion was disbanded in July, 1943 after its return to Australia. Alan became a member of the 2/6th Battalion, which was sent north to participate in the Wewak campaign and in which he became a Captain and Company commander.

After hostilities ceased Alan worked for several organizations before joining H.J.Heinz in 1950. He worked for that company for thirty years, rising to become Manager of the Baby Foods Division.

In 1950 Alan married Joan Fossett who had served in the RAAF. They had two daughters and the family has now extended to include five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Alan and Joan moved to Mt. Eliza to live in 1955 and were residents there until Joan passed away in 2003 and Alan moved to Benetas Corowa Court Aged Care facility in Mornington three years ago.

Alan has been active in volunteering since his retirement in 1980.He is recognised and respected within many communitybased organizations for his thoughtfulness, generosity and genuine nature. Alan has volunteered for 34 years at Corowa Court as a handyman-repairer and has been a stalwart at their Op Shop in Mt. Eliza. When the redevelopment of Corowa Court was being planned Alan was a member of the committee and it is fitting that he is now a resident of the facility.

original members of the 39th Battalion is now down to eleven.

He is a passionate member of the Kokoda Track Foundation, an organization that raises funds for educational, medical and other necessities for Papua New Guinea villagers along the Track. He also personally sponsors children from Kokoda.

As well as the involvements already mentioned, Alan has been a long-time member of Frankston Rotary and Mt. Eliza Probus and was a foundation member of the Canadian Bay Club.

Alan has also spent a large portion of his life presenting at various schools throughout Victoria to share his experience of war and promote a message of peace and collaboration. According to Alan: “The most important lesson of all my volunteering and community work is to just get along with each other and learn to better understand one another. I’ve sat on many committees and volunteered for many years and the inability of people to truly understand those you work with and admit when you don’t is one of the biggest challenges many of us face.”

At the Government House ceremony Alan was joined by three generations of his family, including his two daughters. Since then he has been the recipient of the Australian Defence Veterans pin.

Sepal is a sister company of APS Innovations, an industrial design firm specialising in engineering solutions. Five years ago, there was an opportunity for APS Innovations to work with The Royal Children’s Hospital to develop a better manufacturing solution for infant bottle-feeding.

“The hospital had some issues with infant feeding and called upon people in the industry to put forward ideas for a solution. We applied and won the opportunity to collaborate with the RCH on the product development,” said Mark.

One of the issues the Royal Children’s Hospital was having was fulfilling the needs of babies with various attachment issues and nutritional needs. At the time, the teats used in the hospital were inconsistent in milk flow, resulting in sick babies struggling to establish a good feeding routine. The hospital also sought a greener solution to replace silicone teats that were being disposed of after use.

This gave APS Innovations the opportunity to develop their innovative range of 100% recyclable infant feeding bottles and teats.

When Sepal won the tender, they were presented with the Royal Children’s Hospital’s research and data.

Research suggested that a symmetrical-shaped teat does not make sense; that a baby’s upper palate is hard whereas the tongue is soft. Sepal’s engineering team spent years developing a design that would conform to the natural, albeit complicated, shape of a baby’s mouth. Sepal’s teats allow infants to complete a continuous feeding cycle, because the teat fits more naturally in the infant’s mouth.

Sepal designed a selection of teats to cater for the needs of all infants. At the time, other infant feeding manufacturers only offered small, medium or large hole teats for bottles. Sepal has twelve variations.

“Our goal is to enable babies to feed independently, depending on whether they’re tired and can take their time on their feeds or if they’re super hungry and can suck more. Our range allows them to self-pace their feeds,” explains Fiona.

The secondary part of the manufacturing solution was to develop an infant feeding product range that could be recycled. Due to sanitary regulations, many hospitals dispose of teats after one use.

All Sepal products are made using 100% recyclable materials. This makes Sepal’s range a greener alternative to other products on the market.

Sepal is changing the way young infants feed in hospitals and at home. The business has also moved into the retail sector, allowing parents to buy teats and bottles online and in pharmacies throughout Australia.

While Sepal as a retail brand is relatively small, it is expanding.

When a new hospital starts using Sepal’s infant products, there is a jump in online sales of teats and bottles. Parents of babies who were in hospital using Sepal teats come home and need the next size up.

“We’re also finding a lot of recommendations for our products across platforms supporting new mums,” explains Mark. “Last week we received an online order at 6:43am - an early morning feed time and another anxious follow up email at 10am on the same day.”

“We were given access to CT scans of infants' heads, across different sizes. This enabled us to model where the teat should be positioned in a baby’s mouth to facilitate better coordination of swallowing. We had the ability to get the positioning right,” said Mark.

The development process took four years to develop. Bottles and teats were made and tested on mechanical devices. Prototypes were then produced but had to go through an ethical standards committee to trial with babies in the hospital. Sepal’s infant feeding teats and bottles are currently used in over 30 hospitals around the country and that number is growing.

Sepal’s manufacturing plant in Keysborough churns out around 8,000 pieces every day. There are also plans to launch the Sepal range to venture onto the global market. However, at the moment Sepal remains a small grounded business, with a team who are passionate and confident in their innovative design. As Fiona explains: “Every single staff member has had some experience with either their own child or family or friends’ kids and have seen the struggle with feeding infants. So, it really means something to all of us that if we can make sure there is a baby who stops crying, and is happy and content because they’ve had a decent feed, then it’s all worthwhile.”

W

hat 94 year-old Alec Hose of Rosebud can make out of cardboard, aluminium cans, wire and other recycled materials boggles the mind. Working with truly exacting measure, he crafts large-scale models of fighter jets, biplanes, paddle steamers, airships, ocean liners and airplanes. The detail in his work is incredible.

He remembers the market horse and cart, the cobblestone streets, the cable car on Sydney Road and the invention of the ‘wireless’ radio and all the technology that came after it from television to the Internet. Not many people had cars when he was young, but his father was an engineer and he could afford a family car – a 1922 Dodge.

He chooses to make models of historical interest and they are big! His Hindenburg and Titanic models both measure 10 feet long. His models depict some of the most famous air and sea craft ever made, such as the Concorde, the Red Baron, the Enola Gay and the RMS Queen Mary.

Engineering interested young Alec so he decided to get his training and education in the Air Training Corps of the RAAF at the age of 16. He spent his Saturdays drilling, marching and learning unarmed combat. He also took night classes at Essendon Tech studying flight rigging.

Tools to make the pieces of his models don’t exist. He makes his own jigs, presses and other machinery in his purpose-built workshop at home. He can cut timber down to half a millimetre thick. Invention and reinvention best describe his life and career.

Born in Brunswick in 1925, Alec has seen remarkable change in his lifetime and he likes to tell tales of times gone by.

Originally he wanted to do a fitting course, but missed out and instead got close up and personal with aircraft when he was tasked as a sign writer on planes such as the four engine B-24 Liberator Bomber. There he honed his attention to the detail required for his model making.

The war ended his time in the RAAF, but he later worked for Australian National Airways servicing aircraft at Essendon Airport. When he left that, he spent the balance of his career in plumbing and drainage, but he was always making models.

I’m the kind of person who has to experiment with things to get to the nitty gritty of how things work

Through one of his drainage jobs, he met Charlie Schwerkolt of Charlie’s Car Museum who took great interest in his models and to this day, all of Alec’s models are on display at the car museum.

When he was 50, Alec changed tack and took up figure skating.

He trained very hard, but switched to ice dancing, as it was a little less strenuous. He did ice dancing for 13 years and never had a single fall even doing the quick step on ice. Once the music began, he was off skating around the Sydney Myer Music Bowl in Melbourne. After the Music Bowl skating shut down, he went into model making full tilt.

Initially, making his models required a lot of invention and experimentation. He was always making something to further his cause. He made an air compressor out of an old car, devised an ingenious system for flattening out cans, and set up a jig that cuts to the precision measurement of a pin’s head!

All his skills from engineering to sign writing come into play when making one of his models. He’s currently working on a

Spitfire with a wingspan of over 10 feet. It takes an entire year to make a single model!

If you ask Alec about his life, he’ll tell you that he has done practically everything. “ I can’t be idle,” he says. “I’m the kind of person who has to experiment with things to get to the nitty gritty of how things work,” he says.

If you ask him the secret to his longevity he’ll say it comes down to genetics. (He’s actually related to Queen Victoria!). In reality, he says it’s about how he looks after himself and how he eats. “ I steam everything!” he quips.

There can be no doubt about it; Alec is an inventor. He likes to figure out the way things work. “I know mathematics backwards,” he says. He feels his greatest risk was flying airplanes, but it was also his greatest thrill. And he got to see the evolution of the airplane through the course of his life. To him, nothing could be better than that.

Glass blowing is the art of gathering hot, molten glass on a blow pipe and then adding colour on various layers, manipulating and shaping the hot glass into beautiful shapes with intricate, delicate, beautiful designs and colours Each incorporated into the final art glass piece.

"Inside the furnace there is a big crucible where we melt the clear glass,” said Roberta.

“Imagine getting honey on a knife, sliding the knife down the edge of the jar, and continuously turning it so that the honey doesn’t drip off. That is what it’s like to gather the molten, lava like, clear glass out of the furnace on a blow pipe."

Part of the challenge with working with molten glass is to essentially trap a picture or design in the work.

“There are so many ways to apply colour. I use a technique that puts the background colour of the piece onto a blowpipe. A bubble is then blown. When it’s cool enough the blowpipe is plunged into the furnace where it is encased in the hot, molten, clear glass.

"This is then encased with up to three more layers of the hot molten, clear glass from the furnace. Other colours and patterns are applied to the piece via the various layers of glass.”

Then it is finally mouth-blown with air, and shaped.

“I’m not just making a vase or bowl, but the shape is designed to showcase the artwork within the piece.”

Roberta feels fortunate that she has been able to pursue her infatuation with glass because of the support of Gordon Studio Glassblowers.

“I am very grateful for the opportunity Eileen and Grant have given me to work with them,” said Roberta.

“They are wonderful at what they do, and I am honoured and proud to work with them. It has allowed me to pursue my passion, in the part of the world where I want to live!”

Roberta assists the glass blowers with making their glass in the Red Hill based glass studio. She also works in the retail gallery there and runs the beginner glass blowing classes for those wanting to experience the art for themselves.

“I am lucky to be able to do a wide range of jobs working there,” said Roberta. “And do different things again when working on my own.”

Glass blowing is gaining popularity right now thanks to the reality TV show ‘Blown Away’.

“People get a really good feel for what is involved in glass blowing from the show. The heat and intensity, skill and design, and the unpredictability of the medium.”

Roberta will be exhibiting her work at the Mornington Rotary Art Show in January.

“I was contacted by the art show about three years ago to feature my work, and they have asked me back again,” said Roberta.

“I really love the opportunity to show people what I do.”

But for Roberta, it is not about being the best, or producing the most, but putting her heart and soul into each and every piece that she does make.

“My plan over the last few years has been to focus on what I’d call ‘career pieces’”, said Roberta.

“These are pieces that represent me as an artist, and that I can throw myself fully into.”

The results are beautiful works of art that represent the artist’s love and care.

“At the end of the day, I just love what I do. I hope that shows through in my work.”

P

hotography has been a constant passion for 34-year-old Adam Richmond, but it was illness that has cemented his love for photography, and the long road back to health that has accompanied his photographic journey.

“I first got into photography at school,” said Dromana-based Adam.

“I did photography in Year 12 at Dromana Secondary College. I was encouraged by my dad, who is also a keen photographer.”

“Of course, that meant working with film and darkrooms, and learning the basics.”

After leaving school, Adam worked in a photo lab while he studied photography in the city.“I borrowed money while I was studying and bought a Nikon D300,” said Adam. His style drifted towards street art photography, and he built quite a following.

But in 2014, Adam was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and his urban and street photography was put on hold.

“Due to being so ill, I moved back to the Mornington Peninsula. I was looking for a way to express myself and keep busy, so I picked up the camera again”.

The end goal for me is to work as a freelance photographer for National Geographic

And just recently he received two “highly commended” and one “commended” for a series of black and white images in the 2019 Mono Awards run by Australian Photography Magazine in conjunction with Capture Magazine. He also recently garnered the attention of Nikon Australia and National Geographic Australia on Instagram with two

“In the early days, doing street and urban photography, I was inspired by the situational work of photographers like James Nachtwey,” said Adam.

“It’s been a long road to this point and I’m proud of how far I’ve come.

“Now, I am inspired by the incredible landscape photographers around here, people like Tom Putt, who have lifted the bar so high.”

As for Adam, the recognition is coming thick and fast. Adam was awarded a “Commended” in Australian Photographer of the Year 2018 (landscape category) as well as “Commended” in Australasia’s Top Emerging Photographer 2019 by Capture Magazine.

“I am still on the journey of self-discovery,” said Adam.

“The end goal for me is to work as a freelance photographer for National Geographic.”

His work can be viewed on the walls at Blackthorn Café, Dromana. All proceeds of the prints go towards treatment costs for his ongoing recovery.

SUMMERS COLLECTORS SHOW AT Everywhen O

utstanding Aboriginal art from nine regions and works from the gallerist’s own collection feature in Everywhen Artspace’s Summer Collector’s Show 2020.

Works come from as far afield as the Central, Western and Eastern Deserts, Far North Queensland, the APY Lands, Utopia, the Pilbara, the Kimberley, the Tiwi Islands, Arnhem Land and the Mornington Peninsula. Included also are coastal and rainforest works by non-indigenous artists David Beaumont from Queenscliff and Claudine Marzik from Queensland.

The selection from the McCulloch Collection of Contemporary Aboriginal Art features some 30 pieces acquired by art writer and gallerist Susan McCulloch over the last 20 years.

“It has been a very exciting time in Aboriginal art with an explosion of colour, new directions for the barks of Arnhem Land and the emergence of a whole new school of desert art in a region called the APY Lands situated around the South Australia/Western Australia and NT borders,” she says.

Susan has been documenting the rise of this movement since the 1990s in her book McCulloch’s Contemporary Aboriginal art; the complete guide – co-authored for the last 11 years by her daughter and gallery partner Emily McCulloch Childs.

of the APY Lands, barks from Arnhem Land, Kimberley ochres, canvases by Papunya artists, Tiwi ochres, works on paper from Arnhem Land and WA, and sculptures from Utopia and Alice Springs.

New works include a selection of kelp and other 3D works by the Mornington Peninsula’s Baluk Artists, Kimberley ochres, ceramics, stunning colour works from many regions, new paintings by Western Desert artist Gabriella Possum Nungurrayi and carved poles and other sculptures from Arnhem Land.

“We work with more than 40 Aboriginal-owned co-operatives called art centres based in communities around Australia as well as a number of individual artists,” says Ms McCulloch. “We’re very excited to make these works of such great quality, diversity and interest available to a Peninsula audience.”

EXPERIENCE AN OPERA LIKE NO OTHER World-class musicians come together in January for exclusive performances within the Peninsula Hot Springs open-air amphitheatre – a unique performance space surrounded by native bushland and hot springs baths. Imagine soaking in the sounds of not only opera and classic musical performances, but being immersed in the thermal mineral spring pools that overlook the stage.

Leading Australian operatic soloist, Adrian Tamburini, accompanied by the Inventi Ensemble, will present operative favourites by some of the greatest composers of all time on Friday 10th January, 7pm in Opera at the Springs. Adrian is well known for a career performing with Opera Australia, Melbourne Opera, the West Australian Opera and television performances including Carols in the Domain.

Leading up to the Opera at the Springs, the Peninsula Summer Music Festival and Peninsula Hot Springs will present three performances, free with Bath House bathing. The Rathdowne String Quartet will explore historic works from the string repertory on Thursday 2 January, a yoga and violin experience with Veronique Serret on Sunday 5 January, to a performance by Unknown Mirrors including majestic sounds of the recorder and koto on Monday 6 January.

This will be Peninsula Hot Springs’ third major performance in its newest Bath House Amphitheatre space, which not only combines its unique mineral spring baths with live music and natural surrounds, but also allows guests to picnic with a nutritious and locally sourced menu from the Amphitheatre Café.

The Peninsula Summer Music Festival will present 10 days of concerts ranging from the finest classical and early chamber music, to jazz and world musicians in unique Peninsula locations, including Peninsula Hot Springs, from the 1 – 10 January 2020.

rom his first foray into the high energy, high stakes environment of a professional kitchen as a 16 year old, Adam Sanderson was hooked. He’d been working front of house at the Marriot Hotel in Newcastle, England. His keen interest in the workings of the kitchen caught the attention of the head chef and he was hired as an apprentice

Nottingham was next where he was working in a brasserie/bistro.

There he learned the basics and traditional cooking methods as well as developing troubleshooting skills. In a small kitchen there is nowhere to hide so the difficulties and intensity are felt and managed first hand.

Adam then moved to London to work with Gary Rhodes – a challenging and inspiring experience. It was the hardest kitchen he’d ever worked in. Starting out with an empty fridge in the morning, everything had to be bought fresh and made from scratch to serve 80 people for lunch and then 80 for dinner.

Another incredible mentor in London was Heston Blumenthal at The Fat Duck. Adam was struck by how interested Blumenthal was in the work of the chefs under his charge. Blumenthal shared great kitchen stories and gave excellent notes to his staff. Working at The Fat Duck was also special because it’s where he met his Danish wife, Marie, who was working there as a pastry chef.

Though he has worked in the UK, US and Denmark, the Mornington Peninsula is Adam's favourite place. He first heard about Melbourne when he was working in Copenhagen with Paul Cunningham at The Paul. He and Marie followed up with their own research and decided to sell everything and move to Melbourne.

Adam and Marie received a very warm welcome in Melbourne when they joined the team at Andrew McConnell’s restaurant, Cutler & Co., in Fitzroy. Their first experience in an Australian kitchen could not have been better. Adam took the position of sous chef. Marie worked as a pastry chef. The pair found it very inspiring the way Andrew ran the restaurant, managed the business, and took care of his team.

About eight or nine years ago a sommelier friend suggested that Adam and Marie check out the Mornington Peninsula. He added, more specifically, that they should try the food and wine at Ten Minutes by Tractor because he considered it to be the best food on the Peninsula.

A little bit later, through a recommendation by a friend who had also worked with Heston Blumenthal, the head chef at Ten Minutes

by Tractor gave Adam a call to see if he would be interested in a chef position. Without hesitation, Adam accepted and he’s been there ever since. Now he is head chef.

Adam’s own style is fresh, clean and seasonal. It’s important to him that the food is honest - the ingredients speak for themselves without need for embellishment. For the most part the ingredients come from local farms and local producers.

Creativity is at the heart of Adam’s cooking. Keeping up with what’s available from day to day and week to week keeps him on his toes. He loves working with the local growers and producers and the sense of community that comes with that. He likes being hands-on in every way.

Adam has a couple of signature dishes. First is Mary’s Garden Greens - a medley of Alambra Farm fresh produce resting on a bed of whipped smoked macadamia with apple balsamic and rye.

He’s also especially proud of his Kangaroo en croûte partnered with caramelized cauliflower, kale, raspberry and pepperberry.

While focused predominantly on local ingredients, the restaurant also sources from other places if the quality is great and the product can’t be found on the Peninsula. “Our food is locally driven and seasonal. We don’t have four set menus per year. The menu evolves weekly or monthly depending on what’s growing and what’s available,” he says.

“The Mornington Peninsula is the best place to be, as a chef and as a family. You’ve got everything here - the hills, the beach, great people and great community. It’s great to be a part of it,” he says.

Even his young daughters are involved in collecting ingredients from nature when Adam and Marie take them on family outings.

Recipe PANNA COTTA WITH PEA SKIN SORBET Method

Ingredients Buttermilk and pine panna cotta, pine nuts, pea skin sorbet, pine oil

warm up the cream mixture and pass through a sieve and whisk in the gelatine.

Recipe for the panna cotta

let cream cool for 10 mins then whisk in the buttermilk.

100g double cream

add mix to set in bowls at desired measurement. let cool and set in the fridge.

50g caster sugar 10g pine needles

Recipe for pea skin sorbet

3g gelatine leaves

600g pea skins

200g buttermilk

700g water

Method

350g sugar

place the cream, pine needles and sugar in a pan and bring to a simmer then let infuse for 20 mins. soak gelatine leaves in cold water until soft.

7g sorbet stabiliser 5g ascorbic acid

bring a pot of water to the boil and blanch pea skins for 30 seconds then refresh in ice water. drain off and dry. make a sorbet syrup by boiling the water with the sugar, stabiliser, and ascorbic acid then cool in the fridge. add the blanched pea skins to the cooled sorbet syrup and blend together in a food blender on high speed. pass through a fine sieve and freeze in paco jet containers. when ready to use blend in the paco jet and serve when ready.

For the garnish we use fresh podded peas, diced cucumber, toasted pine nuts, picked chervil.

elebrated local winery, Crittenden Estate, has been awarded the top accolade in one of the world’s most significant competitions recognising outstanding sustainability practices and wine quality.

It seems the critics agree with a raft of gold medals at the recent Mornington Peninsula Wine awards and a Crittenden wine featuring in the recently announced @drinkeasyawards ‘Ten Best Drinks in Australia’.

The 2020 BRIT/FIVS International Sustainable Winegrowing Award is an annual event attracting entrants from around the wine world who take a leading role in implementing sustainable land management practices. Crittenden headed a top-notch list of international wineries including fellow Australian wine icon Henschke with other finalists hailing from Spain, Chile, Portugal and USA.

While taking a step back from day to day operations, Garry remains as passionate as ever about the land. This applies in particular to the 400 cubic metre pile of compost the company produces every year from waste bi-products such as grape pressings and stable waste from surrounding properties.

The resulting compost, carefully fermented over a 12-month period, is applied to the vineyard at key times of the year to promote healthy vine growth and disease resistance.

This, in addition to an innovative covercropping regime where nutrient rich crops such as oats, peas and dwarf broad beans are planted between the rows, ensures that a good source of nitrogen is made available to the vines while allowing moisture to be retained in the soil during the long summer months. And with the harvested vegetables made available to friends, family and staff the entire community benefits.

Employing sustainable land management practices has always been central to the family’s philosophy when it comes to producing high quality wines. As one of the pioneers of the local wine industry and a perennial innovator, Garry Crittenden was amongst the first to see the potential of the Mornington Peninsula for wine growing and planted vines near Dromana in 1982.

Since those early plantings, the Crittendens - now led by secondgeneration winemaker Rollo - have never seen more clearly the connection between their work in the vineyard and the resulting quality of the wines produced. “There is no doubt these efforts are contributing to an increase in the quality of our wines, which is really rewarding. We will continue to push harder with our land care and wine advances for future generations,” Rollo Crittenden said.

The use of these innovative practices has enabled the Crittendens to do something truly remarkable in winegrowing circles; eliminate the use of synthetic chemical sprays. continued next page...

Another positive consequence of this approach is the extraordinary growth in the biodiversity of plants and insects on the property. The introduction of bees has ensured the fertilisation of a wide range of fruiting trees, while serving to control a nuisance population of wasps that used to regularly feature as the grapes were harvested. Large and healthy colonies of native wildlife – including birds, mammals, reptiles and fish – have also noticeably recolonised the property, harking of a return to yesteryear.

Building strong connections with the local community and disseminating knowledge was another key criteria for the sustainability award. This is something the Crittendens have always done with great passion, hosting field-day events for new vineyard techniques and participating in the state parliament’s Environment and Planning Committee session on what the local community can do to tackle climate change. Efforts to advocate for more community proactivity in sustainability and regeneration are also being forged by the next generation with Garry’s grandson Oscar presenting at school about the risks of discarded plastic straws, as well as actively campaigning local businesses to find sustainable alternatives to straws.

The wine included as part of the awards submission was the 2017 Cri de Coeur Pinot Noir, a wine that represents the culmination of the family’s efforts to create the best possible environment in which

to produce an extraordinary wine. Recently awarded 97 points by James Halliday’s 2020 Wine Companion, BRIT’s President and Executive Director, Dr. Ed Schneider praised the winning Cri de Coeur, stating that “the combination of sustainable programs with the family’s love of the land has produced a wine that is truly outstanding”.

The RACV Victorian Tourism Awards celebrate the best of the best in the tourism industry throughout the state.

WaterMaarq ocean adventures operate from the seaside town of Sorrento.

Providing boutique up close marine wildlife experiences, snorkelling and freediving adventures, and specialised freedive courses, WaterMaarq’s personalised approach gives you the confidence to enjoy life-changing marine experiences with seals, seadragons, dolphins, whales and unique temperate fish of the Great Southern Reef.

Moonlit Sanctuary Wildlife Conservation Park won the Gold Award for Ecotourism.

Moonlit Sanctuary is an internationally recognised native wildlife park within the UNESCO sponsored Westernport Biosphere in rural Pearcedale, positioned between the popular Victorian holiday destinations of Phillip Island and the Mornington Peninsula.

Home to 70 endangered Australian animal species (six of which are in species recovery programs), this privately-owned sanctuary offers an immersive ecotourism experience within a natural bushland setting, and dedicates 25% of profits to the rebuilding of Australian threatened species populations.

"Tourism is invaluable for attracting visitors, increasing economic activity across the region and providing employment.

Blairgowrie

Blairgowrie is located on a thin strip of the Mornington Peninsula, facing Port Phillip in the north and Bass Strait in the south, nestled between the popular beach resorts of Rye and Sorrento. Blairgowrie is 87 km south of Melbourne.

Population: 4,627 Blairgowrie has an area of 6.3 square kilometres Blairgowrie has a compact commercial centre situated opposite the bay beach, featuring a supermarket, speciality shops and cafes.

Popular for holiday makers and families, it has calm and safe sandy beaches that front onto Port Phillip. Also fronting Port Phillip is the extensive Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron boat harbour which is a hive of water craft activity.

Spectacular walks and scenery can be enjoyed in the Mornington Peninsula National Park which runs along the rugged Bass Strait coastline. There are numerous walking tracks along cliff tops, through sand dunes and down to the beaches below. Koonya Ocean Beach, at the end of Hughes Road, is the most easily accessible, with a lookout at the car park providing views down to the rocky outcrop of Pelly Point and inland across Blairgowrie towards the bay beach.

Other places of interest along this scenic coastline include Bridgewater Bay at the end of St Johns Wood Road, Pearses Beach and Dimmicks Beach Blairgowrie was named after the Burgh of Blairgowrie, the largest town in Perth and Kinross, Scotland.

Blairgowrie Jumping Rock is a special attraction of the area, and suited for daredevils. Situated in Bridgwater Bay, the scenery is as beautiful as you’d expected it

Blairgowrie's was originally named Canterbury. Later it was known as Sorrento West. After the second world war it was renamed Blairgowrie. The name Blairgowrie was taken from an old estate called 'Blairgowrie House' owned by Dr. John Blair who adopted the name from a Scottish Village north of Strathmore .

The Honorable Michael O’Grady bought over 140 acres of land around the Blairgowrie district and built his 6 room house "Villa Maria" in l872. He was a prominent figure in public life and in Irish circles in Melbourne In the 1860’s and 1870’s and his career was very fully described in The Advocate after his death.

The late 1940's and 1950's saw a period of extensive sub-division and opening up of all the Blairgowrie area north of the Melbourne Road, and, east of St. Johns Wood Road, through to the Ocean Park.

In 1954, the Club Constitution was completed and the name changed to the Blairgowrie Yacht Club. Later this year the name became Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron to avoid conflict of the initials with the Brighton Yacht Club.

The next two years saw a period of intense co-operative effort in building the Club House.

It was a memorable occasion on the evening of 9th November 1957 when Commodore George Pizzey welcomed Miss Australia to the new Clubhouse.

‘WHILST AEROPLANING AT MORNINGTON’

hilip Roff Nunn died at Mornington one hundred years ago, on 4 January 1920, and was buried at the Melbourne General Cemetery two days later. He was just eighteen years of age, the only son of Philip William and Louise Nunn. His father was a nephew of Crompton J Nunn, one of the founders of Buckley & Nunn, a leading Melbourne department store, and spent his entire career with the company. The family was well-known and respected in Melbourne society and business circles, and this was reflected in the numbers attending young Philip’s funeral.

If you were to visit his grave today it is probably not just learning of Philip’s age that would attract your attention. After all, around you at the cemetery there is plenty of evidence of other young lives having been cut short. Chances are that you, like the writer, would be intrigued by the curious inscription detailing the cause of his death: “Accidentally killed whilst aeroplaning at Mornington”.

A Fascination with Flying New technologies bring with them new words. Some of these become part of our vocabulary almost overnight, others take a while to gain acceptance, and a few are eventually rejected in favor of some alternative. It seems that for those composing the lines to go over Philip’s grave, “flying” was something that birds did, and travel in an aeroplane was “aeroplaning”. (Just as riding a motorcycle was “motorcycling”.) And although the word was certainly in decline by 1920, it can be found in regular use in Australian newspapers from about 1909.

But whatever you chose to call it, travelling in an aeroplane – indeed, anything at all to do with aeroplanes – was a matter of great public interest. There was probably no better way of attracting a crowd to an event than to have an aeroplane and pilot present,

particularly if they were to perform aerobatic manoeuvres or offer joy-flights. It was a fascination shared by young and old, male and female, and, as the society weekly Table Talk recalled in January 1920, by Philip Nunn.

During the war years, Buckley and Nunn’s employees, like those of many other businesses, were actively involved in fund-raising for war-related charities, and in 1917 and 1918 they organized two highly successful Annual Balls in Melbourne Town Hall. On Philip’s death, Table Talk noted: “His great ambition was to fly, and many people who attended the last ball . . . will remember the fine aeroplane suspended from the roof of the Melbourne Town Hall.

This was built entirely by young Philip Nunn, and was a perfect model, occupying the whole of the roof space.” (Table Talk, 8 January, 1920)

Larkin, DFC, who returned to Australia in July 1919 as General Manager of the Larkin-Sopwith Aviation Company of Australasia, founded in England in June, “to carry on business in Australasia as manufacturers of and dealers in aircraft.” (The Age, 13 June, 1919) He set up business in Glenhuntly and began importing Sopwith Dove and Gnu aircraft. Larkin’s promotion of the company, its products and services, and civil aviation in general, was both vigorous and imaginative. One of the evening attractions of Melbourne’s 1919 Henley-on-the-Yarra Regatta was an “illuminated” Sopwith Dove, piloted by Larkin, circling down over the site. The first aircraft exhibited at the Royal Melbourne Show were on a LarkinSopwith stand, in 1920. Even test-flights of newly-assembled aircraft, scheduled for weekends and with advance publicity, could, and did, serve as promotional events.

Larkin also offered joy-rides to those keen to sample flying. He was certainly not the only one to do so, but the Sopwith Dove and Gnu were probably the most technically advanced aircraft on offer, and the Larkin-Sopwith pilots included some highly-decorated “aces”. And the company’s aerodrome at Glenhuntly was no great distance from the Nunns’ home at Elsternwick. All of which may explain why, with his father’s approval, Philip Nunn chose LarkinSopwith for his first flight, on Wednesday 31 December 1919, in a Sopwith Gnu, with Captain A. W. Vigers, MC, DFC.

Larkin-Sopwith Aviation Other than those in military service, real aircraft, and people capable of flying them, were scarce in war-time Australia. This changed post-war, with the importation of new and technicallyadvanced aircraft designed for civil use, and the repatriation of men who had gone away as soldiers and returned as skilled pilots, trained in the hardest of schools. One of these was Captain H. J. (Jimmy)

Enter The Herald On Christmas Eve 1919, The Herald, Melbourne’s evening newspaper, announced that its next eight issues, from Boxing Day to 3 January 1920, would be delivered by aeroplane to six bayside centres from Mordialloc to Sorrento. It proudly claimed that this “aerial newspaper delivery service” would be a “first... in the history of Australia”. Then, perhaps to dispel any notion that this was some sort of publicity stunt, it went on to explain that the goal of the exercise was an improved service to those readers holidaying at the bayside resorts. continued next page...

In the past, it said, “those whose business interests necessitated their keeping in close touch with affairs in Melbourne” had been “sorely handicapped” when holidaying with their families, in some cases being unable to obtain their evening paper until the following day. But as from the next issue, thanks to this innovation, “holiday makers at Dromana, Sorrento and Portsea will receive their final edition of The Herald about an hour after it is published in Melbourne. . .When they assemble for tea at the hotels or boarding-houses, they will be able to discuss the events of the same day.” (The Herald, 24 December, 1919) Using an aeroplane may have been, in today’s parlance, “hightech”, but other aspects of the planned operation were certainly not. The Sopwith Gnu biplane to be used would not be landing anywhere en route. Instead, bundles of newspapers would be dropped overboard from the open passenger cockpit at convenient locations – sports grounds, golf courses, or paddocks - for the local newsagent to collect and distribute. And to provide a degree of accuracy to this rather hit-and-miss procedure, the pilot would bring the aircraft down as low as circumstances permitted. If subsequent reports are correct, this could be less than five metres above ground level.

The inaugural delivery flight coincided with an aerial display at Mordialloc’s Epsom Racecourse, where an estimated ten thousand people watched the Larkin-Sopwith pilots perform various “hairraising manoeuvres” as if in battle. Thus Captain Vigers “gave an exhibition of ‘ground strafing’, flying a few feet from the earth along an imaginary trench, which, it had to be assumed, he was machine-gunning under hostile fire . . . The crowd was alarmed, and then cheered when he flew low and direct towards the grandstand, and when a crash seemed imminent rose swiftly and skimmed the flagpoles. . .” (The Age, 27 December, 1919)

Captain Roy King, DSO, DFC, left Mordialloc mid-afternoon, subsequently returning with an aeroplane load of newspapers in bundles, with the first to be dropped at the racecourse. When the bundles hit the ground, Mr Edsall, the newsagent, ran out with his helpers to collect them, only to be overtaken by a stampede of spectators intent on helping themselves. Mr Edsall was knocked over and trampled on; his clothes were ruined; and he lost a fifth of his newspapers. Thankfully, the crowds of spectators at other dropoff points were smaller and less warlike in their manner.

The next day’s front page was almost entirely devoted to a detailed coverage of the first delivery – the reception at each of centres visited, how well it all went, and how incredibly enthusiastic the bayside citizens were, seeing themselves as “taking part in an epochmaking event”. It included an account of the flight by the pilot, Captain King, part of which might well raise questions in the mind of today’s reader. What do we expect of the pilots of light planes flying overhead today? How would a 2020 repeat of the following exploit be regarded?

King described how, having time to spare on the return flight, “we gave the visitors at Frankston some amusement by flying low . . . over the beach and . . . chasing a bather. A man in bathing costume was strolling along the pier and we chased him at a height of about fifteen feet (4.5 metres) . . . It gave one the feeling of being a hawk in pursuit of a mouse. The man glanced around and fled for the end of the pier, where he took a neat header into the sea.” But there are no subsequent reports of anyone complaining. On 30 December, The Herald announced that “in order to satisfy the urgent requests for delivery to other centres”, the service was to be extended. As from the following day, another twelve communities around Port Phillip Bay would receive their evening papers by air.

Because of the greater number of newspapers to be transported, two flights would be required. The first would deliver to eleven locations from Sandringham to Frankston, and would be followed by a second flight covering Mornington to Portsea, then crossing the bay and dropping papers at Queenscliff and Portarlington.

Seizing an Opportunity It was probably this extension of the service that prompted Philip Nunn to seek the role of passenger/cargo-handler on a delivery flight. The family often holidayed at Queenscliff, and his mother – presumably with his young sister Betty – was currently staying there at the Ozone Hotel. And what teen-aged lad would not be tempted by the possibility of having his family unexpectedly seeing him flying overhead? He did not share his plan with his parents, nor seek their permission. Maybe he didn’t want to spoil a great surprise, or perhaps it was simply a teenager’s thoughtlessness.

On 2 January 1920 he was working in Buckley and Nunn’s Bourke Street warehouse, and his father last saw him there about 2 pm. At some stage he received a telephone message from the

Larkin-Sopwith aerodrome at Glenhuntly – apparently in response to an inquiry he’d made – informing him that he could go on that evening’s flight. He left the warehouse mid-afternoon, and headed to the aerodrome, detouring briefly to collect a camera and a pair of field-glasses from his home in Elsternwick.

Captain Vigers was to be the pilot for the MorningtonQueenscliff flight that day. He subsequently testified that he had heard beforehand that Philip might be acting as his assistant, but didn’t know who had approved of his doing so. And when the lad presented himself at the aerodrome, he had tried to dissuade him from taking on the role, as he didn’t know precisely where the papers were to be dropped. Somehow, Philip prevailed, and when the Sopwith Gnu took off for Mornington shortly after 5 pm, he was the one sharing the passenger cockpit with bundles of The Herald newspapers.

The Mornington Drop The papers for Mornington were dropped onto what was known as “the five-acre paddock”, located between Main Street and the

railway line, opposite Alexandra Park – where The Bays Hospital stands today. Around 5.30 pm, as the Sopwith flew in from the jetty end of town, there were 200-300 people gathered on the roadside to watch the operation. But when directly over the town, the plane’s engine backfired, then stopped completely: Vigers now had to land somewhere, and the paddock was the obvious choice.

Unfortunately, as he headed down to land, the crowd, unaware of this change of plan, rushed onto the paddock.

“When about 10 feet (3 metres) from the ground I flattened out preparatory to landing,” Vigers later explained, “but the people crowded on to the ground . . . and that made it impossible to land without injuring someone.” He then attempted to take his machine up over the railway line onto vacant land opposite. (This was the Bay View Estate, where 79 residential lots were shortly to be offered for sale.) But the tail of the Sopwith snagged the telegraph line running alongside the railway, and it somersaulted, crashing to the ground upside-down, with pilot and passenger trapped beneath. continued next page...

The presence of the crowd meant that assistance was promptly at hand. Although injured, Vigers was struggling to free himself: he was lifted out, and taken by car to Dr VJE Woinarski’s surgery in Wilsons Road. After administering appropriate first aid, the doctor left him and hurried to the crash site. By this time, Philip Nunn had been extricated from the wreckage – not without difficulty, for the machine had to be lifted bodily to release him. Unconscious, and obviously suffering serious head injuries, he was taken on a stretcher to a local private hospital.

If an aeroplane flying down to drop bundles of newspapers could attract several hundred spectators, how big a crowd might be drawn to the site of a very recent and serious crash? According to one report, until midnight that evening in Mornington, “there were constantly present between 700 and 800 people.” And some, it noted, were as much souvenir-hunters as spectators: “In spite of . . . a mixed police and civilian guard . . . many splinters and fragments (of the machine) were seized, and the engine and other parts were only put out of harm’s way by their removal.” (The Argus, 5 January, 1920) The Death of Philip Nunn Philip Nunn never regained consciousness; his condition deteriorated, and he died early on Sunday morning. His body was removed to the City Morgue, and on the following day, Monday 5 January, an inquiry into the cause of his death was formally opened – and subsequently adjourned – by Deputy Coroner Alexander Phillips. Captain Vigers, obviously a key witness, had suffered a fractured leg, fractured ribs, and a punctured lung, and according to Dr Woinarski, it would be five or six weeks before he was fit to give evidence.

On 3 January 1920, in their first accounts of the crash, Melbourne’s two major dailies suggested that for one reason or another, Vigers was at fault. The Argus reported that it was because he “swooped down so low (to drop the papers)... that... his machine became entangled” on the telegraph line. The Age, whilst acknowledging that he was attempting to avoid people on the paddock, stated that he had “tried to pass under the telegraph wire”, and that Captain King did so “regularly” at Portsea. These inaccuracies were not repeated, and The Argus made amends three days later with an item on the urgent need for government regulation of civil aviation.

“At present”, it declared, “neither a motor-car nor a hackneycarriage can be driven in Collins-street without a licence. But a daring – and it may be entirely unskilled – aviator can fly the full length of the street, sweep hawk-like above the office of the Prime Minister, and loop the loop above... Government House. No official protest could be made, and no-one has the power to inquire into his fitness for attempting the feat. As to the general public, it would content itself with a wild stampede towards the machine when it began to land . . . endangering the lives of the onlookers as well as those of the airmen.” (The Argus, 6 January, 1920)

Another Fatality As if to emphasize the point, six weeks after the Mornington crash a combination of the same ingredients – aeroplanes, skilled pilots, a crowd, and fancy flying – led to another fatality, this time at Geelong. Advertising for the “flying exhibition” at the Geelong Racecourse on 14 February promised “aerial racing by low-flying aeroplanes around the race track”, and invited the public to “come and see them JUMPING HURDLES.” So they came, they were thrilled – occasionally alarmed - and at times some strayed onto parts of the course where they were not meant to be.

Towards the end of the day’s activities, John Coghlan, 30, was struck by a low-flying Sopwith Dove and died instantly, his neck broken. Unbalanced by the impact, the aeroplane then crashed and the pilot, Captain GC Wilson, MC, AFC, DCM, was lucky to escape with minor injuries. Some newspaper reports suggested that shortly beforehand Wilson had been “clearing” people from parts of the racecourse by flying dangerously close to them, and portrayed Coghlan’s death as an unfortunate consequence of this.

Captain Wilson declared that he was in the process of landing, and didn’t see Coghlan until it was too late.

A lengthy inquest into Coghlan’s death opened two days later, and was taken up largely with argument as to whether or not Captain Wilson’s flying was “reckless”. A number of witnesses – including two pilots (not with Larkin-Sopwith) – were quite adamant that it was. Their claims were vigorously rejected by Captains Larkin and King, and by Wilson himself. In the end, Deputy Coroner W. R. Anderson passed no judgment on Wilson’s flying, simply ruling that Coghlan “died from injuries accidentally received through being struck by an aeroplane”. He did, however, recommend the introduction of State regulation of “aeroplane displays.”

The Inquiry into Philip Nunn’s Death Understandably, all this appears to have informed Deputy Coroner Alexander Phillip’s inquiry into the cause of Philip Nunn’s death, which resumed on Friday 26 March. Vigers was quizzed on the events leading up to the crash, the decisions he’d taken as the situation developed, his flying methods, whether the engine problem should have been detected earlier, and if it could be attributed to inadequate maintenance. Other questions put to him were of a broader nature. Were pilots in England required to be licensed? And would it be better if access to airfields was limited, as in France?

Captain Vigers came through the inquiry well. Expert witness confirmed that the engine failure that occurred could not have been foreseen, and that Vigers’ handling of all that followed was faultless. Accordingly, Deputy Coroner Phillips concluded that Philip Nunn’s death was the result of “an unfortunate accident”.

But he went on to say that with the use of aeroplanes increasing, “regulations governing aviation will be required”, and that it was high time “for some person of experience to be empowered to issue aviation certificates and licences for air pilots.” (The Herald, 26 March, 1920) The Government Acts Despite the public fascination with aeroplanes and flying, there was a rising chorus of concern, not just relating to safety, and not

only from coroners and newspaper editors; those directly involved in the fledgling civil aviation industry also had their grievances.

In May 1920 a Premiers’ Conference in Melbourne called on the Federal Government to assume responsibility, and before the year’s end the Commonwealth had a Controller of Civil Aviation – Lieutenant Colonel HC Brinsmead, OBE, MC – a Civil Aviation Branch (of the Department of Defence), and an Air Navigation Act. The regulations contained in the Act seemed to cover every aspect of civil aviation. There were regulations on the licensing of aerodromes, the examination and registration of pilots, airworthiness and the registration of aircraft, the rules of the air, and a host of matters related to safety. As the Press noted, these included strict limitations on flying at a low altitude over populous areas; on ‘trick’ or exhibition flying; even on dropping anything from an aeroplane: all this of cold comfort to Philip Nunn’s family perhaps, but clearly making the world a little safer for others.
