mazing things are happening behind the mirrored façade of an otherwise nondescript building in Seaford’s industrial precinct. "Envision" is a not-for-profit charity organization dedicated to helping people on a local, national and international level. On the other side of the mirror, inside their humble workshops, experimental engineering and creative building is going on upcycling throwaway materials and repurposing them into lifechanging products.

Even better, people who are often marginalized in the traditional workplace are making them. Sean Teer, Manager at Envision doesn’t believe anyone is unemployable. He has dedicated his life to helping people find gainful employment. Envision, amongst other things, is a jobactive, aka work for the dole site. They teach hands-on skills and provide interesting challenges to people who don’t fit the typical employee model, such as the long-term unemployed or people with disabilities. continued next page...

At Envision anyone who is keen to work can learn practical and social skills vital to a working environment. There is a carpentry workshop where recycled timber is creatively repurposed into projects that help the elderly, people with mental illness and underprivileged communities locally and nationally. At the same, time some exciting work experimenting with recycled plastics is making a worldwide ripple.

In early 2018 at Envision’s Werribee office, Joe Ferlazzo started his Plastic Fantastic Project focused on recycling plastics into prosthetic hands/arms. He found out about this idea through an organization in the United States founded by Jen Owen called e-NABLE.

She received funding from Microsoft to establish a library of design for 3D printers. e-NABLE is an information hub that makes their prosthetic designs available free of charge to the worldwide online community.

Ferlazzo focused his efforts on plastic bottle caps because they were literally falling through the cracks in recycling facilities and ending up in landfills, on beaches or in the oceans. In fact, they are fifth on the list of top 10 plastic rubbish items most frequently found on beaches, in oceans and even worse, ingested by the fish, birds and marine mammals that live there.

Instead, Envision has partnered with schools and community groups such as Rotary to collect plastic bottle caps to make them into prosthetic hands/arms. The caps are shredded, melted and extruded into filaments using a machine designed and made by Ferlazzo. The filament is loaded into 3D printers and used to create the parts, which are assembled at Envision and sent to children overseas. The recipients are children in India born without fingers or hands or amputees in war-torn countries such as Syria. These simple prosthetics help children do things most people take for granted, such as, holding a cup or picking something up.

In Seaford, the Envision team is experimenting with different kinds of recycled plastics, working out the best combinations for optimum flexibility, rigidity or strength. A volunteer engineer explores all kinds of materials, such as, fishing wire, dental rubber bands, jewellery wire or anything else that could improve movement and design. Each prosthetic is individually made to meet the exact requirements of the child receiving it. They are fitted by organizations on the ground overseas, in medical facilities or community environments.

It takes hundreds of bottle caps to make a single prosthetic. A lot of trial and error is involved, as no two are alike. Many volunteers are needed to help with engineering, fundraising, bottle cap collection and 3D printing. Local schools have come on board to help out as they have both the resources and enthusiasm for the project. Envision gives schools the filament and production directions. Students then make the parts and Envision assembles them, but potentially, with some training, students could make the entire product. Many schools on the Mornington Peninsula have 3D printers and, as such, are well placed to help with the Envision Hands project.

Because of their strong focus on tackling waste, the staff and students embraced the opportunity to support such an incredible cause, turning rubbish into something meaningful. Heading the team is Year 12 student, Kieron Parmar –Poynter, who believes that embedding sustainability into the curriculum is critical to shaping the global citizens of the future. He states: “By fostering a sustainable approach in all our endeavours, we can encourage and inspire others to follow our lead.”

Envision has many pro-social projects on the go and always needs help. Everything they make, restore or refurbish from used computers to discarded bicycles are recycled back into the community or donated overseas. These projects enrich the lives of the people both giving and receiving. New skills are learned, new ideas are exchanged, new friendships are forged and people who felt they had no place to belong have found new meaning and purpose in their lives. Envision is a winning enterprise. Get on board.

here’s something intriguing about Gerard and Cynthia Walsh, the stylish couple of Sorrento Furniture who seem to hold the secret to a fun and adventurous life. Gerard is dapper as always in his tailormade suits, pocket handkerchief, slick backed hair and immaculately polished shoes, while Cynthia is effortlessly chic with an eclectic style that reflects an unmistakable chilled out nature. There is nothing false about this couple, who run the immensely successful Sorrento Furniture. They love good champagne, nice cars, and travelling the world.

They create stunning pieces of furniture for their clients and spend their life surrounded by beauty, and you would be hard pressed to meet a more down to earth pair. Peninsula Essence talks to Gerard and Cynthia about family, business and their secret to a happy life.

“I started out as at 15 years of age as an apprentice upholsterer,” said Gerard, whose eye for design, love of colour and form turned out to be the perfect combination for a lifelong career in custom designed furniture. “The love of furniture design was in my blood as I am a third generation furniture maker and have passed it on to one of my sons as well.”

While the Mornington Peninsula couple enjoy the finer things today, they certainly didn’t start out with a charmed life but are proof that hard work and a good attitude pay off.

“I met Cynthia when she was just 17. I had been working as an upholsterer for many years and a mate asked me to drive him and some friends to a disco," said Gerard who was 23 at the time.

The young couple married and bought a house in Dandenong where they started their first furniture upholstery business from their garage.

“It was so tiny but it was important to us to start our own business together,” said Cynthia and Gerard, who have now been married for 34 years. “Gerard would work during the day and then come home and do his own upholstery jobs from the garage. Before we knew it, we bought a little factory in the main street of Dandenong and we were on our way.”

“So far it has been an amazing life but we believe that whether we have had good times or bad. We look back with no regrets, and appreciate the difficult times when we look back,” said the couple who have faced their challenges in business. “We bought Sorrento Furniture eight years ago and at the same time were taken for a lot of money in our other business. We had to sell the house and the factory but were determined to pay off all the people we needed to.

That was very important to us. For those two years, we lived on a tight budget and only went out one night a week to the Glenn where we could have a cheap meal and get a free Slurpee and Chinese tea.”

A good work ethic and treating people with the same respect they would like is the key philosophy for Gerard and Cynthia in life and in business.

“We have had a really good life with the businesses we have had, but giving back and helping people is the most important thing,” said Gerard. “That is what I really want to do, treat customers the way we like to be treated. It is very easy when things are going right but it is so important when things are going wrong to have the same level of service and hospitality. When something goes wrong, we work out how to fix it, and that is a philosophy that is very close to my heart.”

From a young age, growing up in the Crittenden household, my brother Rollo and I were subject to many a dinner party. It was the eighties and the raucous laughter would waft up the stairs. Sunday morning would see us fossicking through the debris, ever hopeful we’d uncover an unnoticed after dinner mint. Perhaps you can relate. Mum, Margaret Crittenden, was known for the amazing food she was able to whip up in the kitchen whilst the wine Dad was making from his newly planted vines would complement the dishes beautifully. The perfect team.

Perhaps that’s why, 35 years on, events and dinners at Crittenden Estate are such an important part of what we do. Rollo and I, having grown up with it, simply love to entertain. Many appreciate the emotive influence that food and wine has in our lives. Often shared with those we love it has the power to evoke an array of senses.

On March 16th guests were treated to an event that surmises all that we do here at Crittenden – create an amazing experience for our guests. As part of The Melbourne Food and Wine Festival we teamed up with Guy Mirabella from ShopAte in Mount Eliza to create not just a dinner but an experience for those who attended. We called it The Cook and The Winemaker.

Guy and his food is an institution on the Peninsula.

His cooking is superb. But more than that, Guy is creative and artistic; evident in the food he prepares.

We knew he would be the perfect partner to take this dinner to the next level.

In the thick of harvest guests were able to witness vintage in real time. The evening commenced in the winery with a cocktail made from local Bass & Flinders gin along with Pinot Noir “grape must”, fresh from this year’s crush.

Developing relationships is fundamental between nature, the winemaker and the cook. These threads were entwined on the night and guests were treated to an artistic and sensory feast.

Music, chosen by Guy, introduced each course and menus were quirkily crunched in a ball at place settings. The wine was carefully matched and

flowed in abundance; nine premium wines, three of these sneak peaks into wines not yet released.

Events at Crittenden are an important part of what we do, although they are but one component of the experiences those who are a part of the broader Crittenden family can enjoy. Perhaps after reading this you’re lamenting that you missed out.

Cynthia says that to be successful it is also important to take advice from other people.

As for their joie de vivre, the couple says it is important for them to always try and step out of their comfort zone.

Cindy Pritchard has performed countless shows of “Fiddler on the Roof”, "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" and the role of Earth Mother in the Australian regional tour of "Menopause the Musical”, as well as Grandma Poss in "Possum Magic" and Miss Plum in "Hairy Maclary and Friends”, and was a regular singer, accompanied by John Foreman, for over five years on Good Morning Australia with Bert Newton.

Never afraid of hard work, Pritchard has worked tirelessly to promote the film on social media and was thrilled at the turnout at the viewing in Rosebud and then with her home town of Orange.

With a love of theatre and the stage that continues to this day, Pritchard has a new incarnation as producer and cast member of a recently released feature film, “Book Week”.

“The next film I am involved with is called “Zarephath” which is based on the Old Testament and very close to my heart,” said Pritchard, of the film that will be filmed on location in Corowa. “While I am not appearing in the film, my role is executive producer and I strongly believe in the message of this story.

Written and directed by Taysha McFarland, “Zaraphath” is about resilience, loneliness and the will to survive, even faced with great adversity.”

“In the film I play a supporting role as Miss Vines, a no-nonsense school administrator who is fed up with the bad behaviour of teacher and suffering writer Nicholas Cutler, played by Alan Dukes,” said Pritchard, of the movie that was filmed at Katoomba and Lithgow High Schools on a shoestring budget of $100,000. “Book Week tells the story of Mr Cutler, who is forced to question his career after his second novel fails to be accepted. It is a lot of fun and a great message about the importance of reading and getting children to put down their screens and partake in other things in the world.”

It was a chance meeting with director and writer, Heath Davis that was the catalyst for Pritchard’s involvement with the film.

“Heath’s first feature film, “Broke” was being showcased at the opening of the film festival and we got chatting about the project.

I became a producer after putting in some money for the crowd funding and then was asked to play the small role which I loved,” said Pritchard, who is an advocate for Australian cinema. “The film is loosely autobiographical as Heath Davis is a writer and director who teaches to earn a living.”

“I am a firm believer in Australian cinema and supporting our writers, directors and actors but I also like to be involved with films with a strong message,” said Pritchard, who is already working on a second film called “Zarephath”.

For Pritchard, who has a strong faith, spreading a message of hope and resilience is an important part of her life’s work. The peninsula actor and producer with the theatre running through her blood, is a true inspiration, always on the look out to take it forward.

“While I still do the kids' music class, the odd TV commercials, theatre spots and film appearances, it is wonderful to be able to share a positive message through the medium of film.”

Wednesday Market Personalities Tash Nicholls is the person behind Margaret's Mushrooms; a backyard micro-farm operation based in Langwarrin. Challenging circumstances brought opportunity for her family unit to regroup and adjust their lifestyle; this included growing mushrooms! “A keen forager with an interest in natural medicine, I saw the turn-key grow room solution offered by Life Cykel as an opportunity to expand this passion into a business while having the flexibility to remain true to our punk-eco-approach,” said Tash. “My name is Henk Nieuwesteeg, also called Thorn, in the motorcycle world… for some unknown reason,” Henk laughed. He began his interest in roses as a young lad, taking cuttings and experimenting with all types of plants. Getting his hands dirty was a must with constant supervision from his dad, an experienced gardener and nurseryman. Henk fell in love with roses when he quickly learnt that they are virtually indestructible. Instead of focusing on growing ‘on mass’ Henk stuck to a manageable number of different varietals such as standards, old- fashioned and weeping roses. As a small set-up marketeer trading since 1998, he focuses on quality rather than quantity. “I have never changed profession and love what I do,” said Henk. “A tradie puts down his tools after work, but a nurseryman has the last laugh as his plants keep on growing when he knocks off at the end of the day.” Drop into the market and Henk will no double convince you that roses are the best plants in the world.

Helen from Button to Button learnt knitting, crochet and sewing at very young age and found that she not only love it but was also very talented. After having worked for a craft shop in Prahran as a designer and sample maker for eight years, she finally established her own business. Helen designs and makes covered button jewellery, knitwear and bags with hubby Patrick at their home studio in Melbourne. “I love attending the various local craft markets and fairs across the country,” said Helen. “All of my products are unique in design, Japanese inspired and hand-made at affordable prices to everyone can add some art and colour their to outfits”.

M

elissa Forbes has always loved fashion, working for retail giants throughout her early career, learning from the best at David Jones and City Chic, and finding her passion along the way.

The epitome of strength and style, you would never know the bright and bubbly mother of three who recently restarted her own business, Fashion Pop, had faced serious health challenges along the way. A true inspiration, peninsula-born Melissa is the essence of courage and conviction, continuing to push on with a determination to help other women through fashion.

“I originally started Fashion Pop four years ago after I could no longer work in retail due to a heart condition,” said the 37-year-

old. “I loved working in the retail field but saw there wasn't a lot of variety for the curved and plus sized women, so I wanted to bring affordable fashion for all body types without a hefty price tag.”

For the single mum, this was the chance to do something creative and work around her three children.

“I started out very slowly, buying items bit by bit when I had spare money so that I could build up enough stock to launch it,” said Melissa, of the process that took two years. “I finally opened my little boutique but three months into it, I developed a 5cm follicular carcinoma tumour in my thyroid with metastasis spread. This sent my life into turmoil; I had to concentrate on healing and so closed the boutique and put everything on hold until I recovered.” continued next page...

“I’m now so excited to finally launch Fashion Pop online and my goal is to make Fashion Pop Boutique about supporting women, building hope and turning fashion into power,” said Melissa, who has teamed up with the Australia New Zealand Gynaecological Oncology Group. “It is a wonderful organisation that funds women to get into vital trials to save their lives and goes under the banner ‘savethebox’.”

Melissa donates a percentage of every sale from Fashion Pop to the foundation and these incredible women.

“I wanted to give back hope. Cancer in all forms can be unpredictable and scary. I have been there and I understand the emotions you face, but through mine I found strength and hope and a desire to give back,” she said. “I now see that my cancer experience has inspired me to help others while doing what I love with fashion.”

After struggling with health over the years and now proud to say that I am fully recovered, it is even more important for me to help other women look and feel good, as well as donate funds for women’s cancer research.”

While it has been a long process, Melissa says that she can finally see her vision coming to life.

“It was all worth it because I know my vision is going to make a positive impact on the world, and support beautiful, strong women,” she said. “We have our first charity showcase Fashion show coming

Did you know that Tuerong had a wheat farm? Or that Red Hill was prime truffle growing terrain? Richard Cornish our MC introduced our show goers to so many locals from Tuerong Farm, Red Hill Truffles, Woolumbi Farm, Dromana Bay Mussels and so many more. The 1st Red Hill Apple Pie Competition was hotly contested with 37 entries but only Cathey Vissher took home the $500 prize money. Matt Wilkinson inspired us all with what culinary delights one can cook up.

2019 Red Hill Show Our Cider Marquee was busy all day with demonstrations of apple pressing, master class lead by 5 local producers including Mock Orchards, Seven Oaks, Camilla Humphries and Harts Farm.

Finishing up with a record of 91 entries, we are now the 2nd largest in the country. Special congratulations to Lisa Cresswell from Seven Oaks Farmhouse for taking out the Top Gold in Show.

Artisan Corner was a hit with crafts from stallholders, the CWA marquee and free kids facepainting and balloon twisters. The skilled artisans of the McClelland Spinners & Weavers and Woodturners Guild educated and inspired the crowd. Peter the sheep shearer worked hard all-day showing kids the tricks of the trade and of course, Futura Kelpies who always draw a huge crowd did not disappoint.

New to the show this year was the beautiful Brumby “Wrangler” and “Harry” the stockhorse. Special thanks to Amber Matthews and Lara Beth for demonstrating what these gentle horses can do.

The woodchop grandstands were packed to the rafters and with The Jackson Four and Diddy Reyes setting the tones, it was a festive

atmosphere everyone could enjoy. There were more free rides than ever before and animal experiences for the kids. With participation across all exhibits from so many of our local schools, scouts and guides, our number of entries were over 2,400. Honey was the highlight and we thank Ben Moore from Ben’s Bees for sharing his expertise on the MPP Stage. Next year, we will be opening up new sections in Olives & Olive Oil and Craft Beers.

On behalf of the Red Hill Agricultural & Horticultural Society we would like to thank our incredible team of volunteers who coordinate this event. MAY 10TH & 11TH 2019 FRANKSTON ARTS CENTRE

Dromana College is putting on the Greatest Show on Earth – quite literally! The hit musical ‘Barnum’, which tells the story of infamous circus and museum owner PT Barnum, will be coming to the Frankston Arts Centre in May with iconic tunes such as ‘Come Follow the Band’ and ‘Join the Circus’.

Following the success of the college’s production of ‘The Wizard of Oz’ in 2017, the Dromana College production team and Performing Arts teachers (Michelle Day, Jacqui Rodden and Sarah Cossey) have come together yet again to provide the students at Dromana College with an exciting opportunity to be involved in another spectacular theatrical experience.

Throughout 2018, the College began its first Music Theatre Enhancement Program which provided students with the opportunity to refine their stagecraft and performance skills. The focus of the program was to develop students’ vocal, dance and acting abilities as they learnt a variety of musical numbers as an ensemble.

Students worked with industry professionals to develop their own performance abilities, and performed in a variety of settings.

Due to the success of the Music Theatre Enhancement Program, the production team saw a professional level audition season.

‘Lessons come from the journey… not the destination’

There were over 100 applicants from all year levels and in all styles including singing, dancing, acting and circus.

They also saw an influx of students wanting to be involved in other capacities including students playing in the orchestra, design, media and backstage.

These students have been working hard since then making props and set pieces for the show, designing artwork and recording the rehearsal process.

Rehearsals for ‘Barnum’ began at the end of 2018 with the cast and crew attending a 3-day intensive camp on Phillip Island where they began staging one of the shows biggest numbers and started learning some basic circus skills. Since the return of the school year, rehearsals have increased, seeing the inclusion of some of the new Year 7 students.

Most recently, the production has welcomed the assistance of Bronwyn Falagan from Soul Circus to choreograph and stage the circus elements of the show. Audiences can expect to see jugglers, acrobatics, contortionists and more.

‘Barnum: The Greatest Show on Earth’ will be performed at the Frankston Arts Centre, May 10th at 7pm and May 11th at 1pm and 7pm. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased from the Frankston Arts Centre website. https://artscentre.frankston.vic.gov.au/Home

ARTHURS SEAT - MORNINGTON PENINSULA The Arthurs Seat Eagle has been soaring the heights of Arthurs Seat on the Mornington Peninsula since December 2016. rained in Malaysia and England, It Hao Pheh’s watercolours have a serenity about them that one can’t help but think is a reflection of the man himself. For the 47-year-old Malaysian-born artist, creative pursuits were always in his destiny, and he has managed to do what few artists can – make a living from his art. Pheh is now living

in Melbourne with his wife and children for the past four years and has an impressive list of awards and exhibitions to his name, including galleries on the Mornington Peninsula.

“Even though I have travelled a lot of the world, moving to Australia has meant a simpler life for myself and my family,” said Pheh, who finds his inspiration in everyday life. “I just have to look at my children or walk out the front door to find something that will inspire me to paint. It has been something I have done since I was a boy of 15.”

For Pheh, drawing and painting came very naturally even though the family was not particularly creative.

“My grandmother had fourteen grandchildren and one of them is creative, working as a music conductor,” he said with a laugh. “My young son does display some musical talent however and he is very good on the piano.”

Pheh was already teaching art to friends and relatives from high school age, after discovering he could pick up the skills very quickly.

Though the most popular of his work is watercolour on watercolour paper, Pheh does not believe in limiting himself to a particular medium.

“As an artist, I want to use as much of my creativity as possible and love playing with different mediums to create the special effects

While Pheh tends to focus on architecture and landscapes, he says that watercolour is the hardest medium to master.

“It was something I just understood and soon people were asking me for help with their art work,” he said of the career that started by chance. “I learnt all the mediums, working with oils, drawing and even doing sculpture but it was watercolour that people loved the most of my art.”

I am looking for. I have worked in oils, collage and abstract work but the bulk of my work and teaching is around watercolour.”

“Oils and acrylics are easier as they can be controlled but with watercolour it is about letting go, while still getting the balance right,” he said.

With a career that has already spanned 30 years, remaining creative and imaginative is part of Pheh’s life.

“It is all about imagination and being creative.

I call it being able to see with your eyes closed,” he said. “Painting and being artistic must be about your heart and soul, not what you see with your eyes. Great art reflects what the artist feels and allows the viewer to feel a sense of soul themselves.”

For Pheh, who was formally trained in fine art at The Surrey Institute of Art and Design, England, his love of travel and the world is documented in his large body of work, using abstract techniques to create a perfect balance of light and space in his architectural pieces.

“All of the work is about the journey, places we have travelled to, and people we have met along the way.”

wo new exhibitions – the first of their kind to be held in Victoria – feature at Everywhen Artspace in April.

One is the first group showing of brilliantly coloured paintings from Mornington Island Arts centre; the other a solo showing of contemporary jewellery in traditional form

by Torres Strait Island contemporary jeweller Emily Beckley.

The artistic history of Mornington Island, in the Gulf of Carpentaria, stretches back to the 1960s when brothers Dick and Lindsay Roughsey worked with missionaries to record their traditional stories in ochre, bark and carved artefacts.

More recently, Mornington Island Arts was best known for the highly sought-after abstracts by the late Sally Gabori (c.

1924-2015). Now the art centre is undergoing a renaissance with a new group of artists, including Sally Gabori’s sisters Netta and Amy Loogatha, daughters Amanda Jane, Dorothy and Elsie Gabori and others.

“Their work is fresh, dynamic, culturally rich and very exciting,” says Everywhen’s co-curator Susan McCulloch.

Sally Gabori’s youngest daughter Amanda Jane Gabori, McCulloch believes is an especially talented artist. “There has never been a comprehensive group show of the work of this art centre in Victoria and it’s a fabulous opportunity to see and acquire really individual, high quality and different contemporary Aboriginal art and also foster an emerging art movement.”

Torres Strait Island jeweller Emily Beckley, who will travel down for the exhibition has been working with the Indigenous Jewellery Project founded by Everywhen’s cocurator Emily McCulloch Childs since 2018.

Beckley is a pioneering artist whose work explores many facets of her culture and traditions. She is the first Torres Strait Islander contemporary jeweller to recreate, in metals, the Haddon Pendants, a series of traditional bridal pendants made by her ancestors now held in the British Museum.

In these works she says she aims to express the “softer, more romantic” side of Torres Strait Islander culture, whose contemporary art is famous more for its warrior depictions.

The exhibition runs from April 12 to May 6. The celebratory opening event is on Easter Saturday April 20 at 2 pm with an in conversation with Emily Beckley and Emily McCulloch Childs. Susan McCulloch will present an illustrated talk on the art of Mornington Island on Sunday April 28 at 2pm. Both events are free but bookings essential.

C

ombining a background in interior design and a love of art, local lady Claire Spring has found a niche in the creative world that is ideal for the Mornington Peninsula.

For the 70 year old artist, life has been a wonderful adventure, with an exciting career in fashion and advertising, running her own business in interior design and then discovering the joy of painting and drawing.

“I had my own business for many years in the city with a background in fashion and design, and I have always loved all things creative,” said Claire who moved down to the peninsula in 2000. “My business was in Melbourne, but after I married we moved down to the peninsula for a quieter lifestyle as my husband at the time wanted to do more fishing.”

For Claire, who has always managed to follow her creative path, working in her artistic endeavours could be done anywhere, and soon she was studying painting and design.

“I have always had a creative side and found that my experience with décor and interior design led to different artistic pursuits. For many clients I have painted massive indoor and outdoor murals for them in their home. I also do furniture and create a look that the client is going for,” said Claire, who shares her time between her studio in Rye and one in the city.

Claire says she has always been creative and remembers, as a child, drawing all the time.

“I would sit in the classroom drawing horses when I should have been doing maths,” said Claire, explaining her art style as “loose realism”. “My passion is colour with lots of flowers and seascapes. I have also had a lot of commissions doing kuta boats.”

Claire’s larger-than-life paintings are a result of sixteen years of doing murals and it is something she has become well known for.

“My largest painting commission was three metres by two metres, which I did for a local lady,” said Claire who considers herself a hobby artist.

“I love doing commissions and love a challenge. A lot of artists get very nervous when asked to do a commission but I love it. I am quite collectible on the peninsula,” said Claire, who uses her interior design skills with artistic influence to create her unique decorative art.

Claire has exhibited in a number of galleries and exhibitions across the peninsula since starting out painting on paper in watercolours and gouache and eventually focusing on oils on both linen and canvas.

elebrating its tenth year, the Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron Easter Art Show is on once again over the Easter long weekend. Proudly sponsored by Hocking Stuart, Blairgowrie, the show raises funds for the BYS rescue boat fleet. Artists from Melbourne, the Mornington and Bellarine Peninsula will have their finest works exhibited and for sale at the yacht club. Feature artists this year are It Hao Pheh, Maureen Kirsch and Lawrence Marshall exhibiting, with returning and new artists, in mediums from painting to photography and sculpture. A silent auction runs throughout the duration of the show with lifestyle experiences, products and vouchers from local retailers.

The first Easter Art Show was held in the Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron's old clubhouse in 2010 and was the joint initiative of the late Past Commodore Bruce Colliver and Past Commodore Jenni Maclean.

“The first art show was largely works from local artist James Uhe,” said Danielle O'Brien of the Art Show Committee. “Subsequent shows featured many Mornington Peninsula artists and a small but very supportive group of artists from the Bellarine Peninsula. Both the growth and churn of artists have maintained diversity in works exhibited at the art show.”

During its nine year history, over 8,000 people have visited the Easter Art Show, which had a temporary home at the Blairgowrie Citizens Centre in 2016 during the rebuilding of the BYS clubhouse.

“The art show continues to offer a broad range of artistic works for sale in a variety of media. At the 2018 show, more than 100 artists were represented with over 300 works on display,” said Ms O’Brien.

“In 2017, both indoor and outdoor sculpture was introduced, which was very well received by BYS members and the community.”

Artist prizes are awarded at each show and as the variety of media has increased over the years, so too has the number of awards to artists.

“The art show has been made possible with the support of BYS members and local businesses who have provided prizes for the raffles and silent auctions,” said Ms O’Brien.

he Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery is constantly mixing it up with a diverse range of exhibitions and artists, and the upcoming "Craftivism. Dissident objects and subversive forms" is sure to impress.

The exhibition presents the work of 18 contemporary Australian artists who utilise craft-based materials with a political intent.

Broadening our understanding of craft-making traditions, the artists in this exhibition subvert and extend these forms into the realm of activism and social change, reflecting on the world in which we live.

Penny Byrne is one of the artists presenting her work in Craftivism, an exhibition that is a perfect fit for her work and philosophy.

While the motivation was to draw attention to the migrant crisis in Europe, Penny explains that it also resonates in Australia.

“Even though we have supposedly stopped the boats, we know there are still people trying to get to Australia, and the figurines represent that,” said Penny, who is trying to get people to think about these issues.

“Through my work being overtly political, my aim is for people to know about the issue. I have my own views but I am not preachy about it.”

In Penny’s work she used a large number of figurines which she sourced from op shops, eBay and social media callouts.

“I decided to use social media and called it the ‘great blue and white figurine hunt of 2017’ because I needed as many figurines

as I could get for this Berlin show. I wanted them to be blue and white because it taps into the traditional European blue and white porcelain tradition, and I imagined all these people dressed in their blue and white outfits with their orange life jackets trying to get to this utopian Europe. I just wanted them really crowded in as if they were overloading this vessel and I made the jackets out of epoxy putty so that they are small and ineffectual as that is what migrants are often given.”

Being made in Australia, then travelling to Berlin and back to a national Australian tour, Penny is thrilled the work is well travelled.

“These figurines that have been donated, found in op shops and discarded get a new life in my art, the same way people are seeking a new life in Europe,” said Penny, who would like people to think

about the ongoing crisis. “Ultimately, how we treat migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers is about our humanity.”

That’s precisely what three friends did when they came across the site a year ago and decided it would be the ideal venue for their restaurant and bar. Now the building, built as a bank in 1912, has a new lease on life with the opening of The Counting House Bar and Grill.

Peninsula Essence talks to the owners, Kevin Ko, Arbel el Sharafy, and Jana Lipold about their foray into business ownership and a lifestyle change to the Mornington Peninsula.

“I moved down here in March after living in the city for many years,” said Jana, who had worked alongside Kevin and Arbel at La Camera, Southgate. “It was interesting as Arbel and Kevin came down for a visit and happened to see the deserted building, saying they would love to start a restaurant there.”

With Arbel as an experienced chef and Jana and Kevin well versed in front of house it was the perfect combination for the trio who soon discovered the business was up for sale.

LOBSTER ROLL INGREDIENTS

TO SERVE

3 units cooked lobster tail –shelled

4 hot dog buns

Melted butter

1/3 fennel bulb 3 pink radishes

METHOD

½ daikon

Place mayonnaise into a large kitchen bowl. Using the vegetable grater, grate all vegetables into the mayonnaise. Chop lobster tails and add to the mixture, Add chopped herbs and season with tabasco, salt and pepper.

When ready to serve, cut each bun length ways across the top, butter the bun on both sides and grill slightly in a warm pan until the bun caramelises. Fill the pocket with the lobster mixture and serve while the bun is slightly warm.

“We worked day and night doing the renovations and creating a menu and venue that would be exactly what we had dreamed of,” said the trio. “The building was restumped and totally given a makeover to bring it back to its former glory.

With an official opening on February 19, The Counting House Bar and Grill has already become a favourite haunt of locals with its meat based menu and tapas style dishes.

“It has such a wonderful history with the old vault we use for storage.The steel vault door is so heavy and we had to get new keys especially made for it,” said Jana who was intrigued by the history of the Counting House. “I love that the main inside dining area was a bank with the original front door, and the rest of the house the family quarters.”

These days, the three owners live in Mornington and embrace the new, slower paced lifestyle.

“It has been everything we have wanted here and we can’t wait for more people to come along and discover our new restaurant and bar and see there is life in the old counting house yet.”

A LONG WAY FROM

rowing up in Israel, Arbel el Sharafy could never have imagined he would end up working and living on the Mornington Peninsula. Yet that’s precisely what happened when the 44-year-old chef opened The Counting House Bar and Grill with two partners.

I had seen photos of Australia and thought it looked beautiful and I have loved it here ever since

“I became a chef when I was 14, and got into trade school back in Israel,” said Arbel, who was taught from a young age to care for his brothers and sisters. “My parents were working so I had to look after them as I was the oldest.”

For Arbel, who worked as a chef at five star hotels in Tel Aviv, cooking very quickly became part of his life “I worked for a big network of hotels in Israel right up until I enlisted in the army from the age of 19 to 21. After that I came back to work at the Hyatt and soon came out to Australia,” said Arbel, who chose Melbourne as it was the next available flight.

“I had seen photos of Australia and thought it looked beautiful and I have loved it here ever since,” said Arbel, who arrived in 1998, working at city venues for many years until the sea change to the peninsula. “With the Counting House Bar and Grill, I am able to do the style of cooking that I specialise in which is good meats and tapas.”

The Counting House Bar and Grill has an extensive menu of grass fed meat which is a specialty dish for Arbel, who enjoys cooking simple, delicious food.

“I have always had a passion for good meat and I like large portions of food. Fine dining and small portions are not my style and I am more drawn towards fresh meat and simple ingredients. We use a lot of beef and seafood in our dishes,” he said.

The Counting House Bar and Grill has a large menu to choose from with lunch and dinner Tuesday to Sunday.

“We do Hervey Bay king prawns, semolina coated cuttlefish, lobster roll in a buttermilk bun, charcuterie, spicy Jamaican wings, as well as sausages, Mediterranean skewers, a huge range of different cuts of quality meat” said Arbel, who is beginning to source more locally and encourages the use of fresh, peninsula grown produce.

THE MONTALTO Way

W

ith rolling hills dotted with vines and olive trees, and views that span across the countryside, the Mitchell family have certainly created the lifestyle that epitomises their love of food, wine, art and the natural landscape. And, at their winery and olive grove, Montalto, they generously share these loves with anyone who comes to visit. The vineyard was originally planted in 1986 however John and Wendy purchased the property - with the planted vineyard already in place - in 1997. For John and Wendy, and their daughter Heidi, the passion for the winery is as strong as the day they started.

“It all came about from our holidays in the south of France each year. We would go to the supermarket and buy a bottle of rose with friends and drive towards Italy where we would see the hills with vines heading down to the ocean,” said John, owner of Montalto.

“Every year with the family we would see these vineyards and just loved it. Not because we were big foodies or even wine connoisseurs but we loved the lifestyle.”

At the time, John, Wendy and the kids had a beach house at Balnarring beach and John decided when they return home he would plant 50 vines at the front of the house.

“Within two years, I did a short viticulture course while I was still working in the corporate world, we bought this land and planted some vines with the view of having a little hobby vineyard. All I needed was a tractor and some secateurs,” he said with a laugh.

It was daughter Heidi, who suggested they make the winery into something more.

For Heidi, who had worked as a lawyer, the idea of a winery appealed as did the idea of moving back to the peninsula.

“My husband and I decided it would be a nicer, quieter life here and I had a chat to dad about doing more in the business,” said Heidi, who has worked there on and off while having her children, starting up full time again this year.

For John, it was a no brainer. “If your child comes to you and wants to work with you, you don’t say no,” he said.

For the family, it then became like six degrees of separation, choosing architects, staff and producing the wine, until eventually they opened the restaurant and cellar door.

“I am also really proud of the wine results. Initially we had the wine made under our guidance and set up the winery fully in 2010. In this year alone, we have had 16 trophies and 30 gold medals throughout the country. We have had awards internationally in Canada and Asia, and I am thrilled to have presented the best possible fruit for our winemakers and just let them do their job.”

“We know what we like with our wine, food, natural landscape, and the art. It all comes together as a package which we love and have the desire to let other people experience as well,” said John.

All I needed was a tractor and some secateurs,

“Our philosophy always been to have a destination that we love with the highest standard of food and wine, but it is the experience people have that we love the most and their connection with the property,” said John and Heidi.

For John, the most memorable moments have been the simplest ones.

“The times when it has been a really busy day and we have enjoyed welcoming lots of people through the property, either in the piazza or the restaurant, or just wine tasting at the cellar door. Then when everybody leaves, there is that moment when you look around and

“Wendy loves her art as do I and I just happened to be at an art gallery in the city when I saw these sculptures that looked like our building, so I bought them,” said John of the interlocking sculptures that sat on the front lawn for many years. “By 2003 artists wanted to display their sculptures through the grounds so we started the national sculpture show which is running annually to this day.”

att Little has been making great cider since 2014 when the former sommelier and his friend, Mal Stewart, got together to create the first batch in Mal’s coolstore in Drouin. From that day, Mr Little Cider was born from the simple desire to drink really good cider made from the wonderful apples that are in abundance on the peninsula.

The next test for the budding cider maker was to see what others thought of the product so it was entered it into The Australian Cider Awards.

“Lo and behold I was awarded a bronze medal,” said Matt, thrilled at the professional feedback of the judges. “That inspired and motivated me to continue on the journey.”

At Mr Little Cider we select only local Australian fresh apples, crush them to extract their precious juice “I had an extensive background in restaurants and especially as a long standing sommelier working both in Australia and Europe,” said Matt, from his newly opened business, Mr Little Cider in Dromana. “I have always loved great quality wines, artisanal beers, spirits and ciders. There was an abundance of commercially produced ciders of dubious quality but not a lot of ciders of high quality, and of the quality I wanted to drink.”

With extensive experience in the wine industry, Matt understood the tenets of good wine making and put that to use with his own cider.

“I knew it would be all about high quality fruit, good handling, minimal interference and minimal processing,” said Matt about creating ‘genuine’ cider made the way he wanted to drink it. “The result is pure, natural, refreshing and of course delicious.”

Within the next year, Matt was making a pear cider and a few years later quit his day job to start his own cider cellar door and café.

“It was 2017 when Mal and I started looking for a suitable site for our cider and, in January last year, we found the perfect place in Dromana,” said Matt. “We opened the cellar door in October and it is moving ahead in leaps and bounds.”

These days, Mr Little Cider has its original apple cider as well as pear, and a new range of ciders with strawberry and lime, ginger apple, blackcurrant, mango and lime, spiced apple, and little woody aged oak cider.

“At Mr Little Cider we select only local Australian fresh apples, crush them to extract their precious juice, filter and then ferment the juice. Later we press more fresh ripened apples and then carefully blend them to the fermented apple juice. This creates a deliciously fresh apple flavoured and aromatic cider with a hint of sweetness and crisp acidity,” said Matt. “We then bottle the blend and try a few, and then try a few more, and if it is good enough for our lofty standards we will then, and only then, put our name on it.”

J

ohn Filiopoulos has a passion for food and people, and so it’s no wonder the hospitality industry is where he has spent the bulk of his career. The owner of Pier Street Kitchen says there is a fair amount of "foodie lust" associated with the café that prides itself on fresh ingredients and a cool, relaxed vibe.

“Pier Street Kitchen is a cafe that offers breakfast and lunch with a Middle Eastern/Mediterranean influence, and we are fully licenced,” said John from the café. “We pride ourselves on being the perfect neighbourhood establishment, full of friendly people and good vibes.

We are a reliable spot to enjoy breakfast, brunch or lunch and on occasion, and our menu is influenced by healthy, simple flavours from the Mediterranean and the Middle East. The chef chooses most of the items seasonally and as local as possible. Nearly everything is made in-house and we are very passionate about this.”

Seven years ago John, and then business partner Dee, started the business with a view to creating a relaxed café atmosphere with unique flavours and great wines. Nowadays, John has taken over the business himself, changed the name to Pier Street Kitchen, and continues with the original vision for both locals and visitors to enjoy.

“I moved down here around 2007 after working in the city for many years,” said John, who loves the peninsula and living at Red Hill. “Once you have been here you never want to leave. It is such a great lifestyle and community.”

John has worked in restaurants and retail throughout Melbourne and the CBD, owning his own café in Toorak and managing a variety of restaurants throughout the city.

“When I got down here I worked at Ten Minutes by Tractor for a while then started the business here,” said John of the business that has maintained the same quality and taste since it began. continued next page...

“We always try to do different dishes as well as the basic, everyday items like basic bacon and eggs, burgers or pasta. Our well known dishes include Shakshouka, a baked Middle Eastern salsa with spinach, chevre, and two poached eggs and served with house pita,” said John. “We also have a pumpkin and potato smash which is very popular, housemade dips with hafla spiced pita, smoked salmon cucumber, baby beetroots, red sorrel, broad beans, peas, blackberries and a pomegranate dressing, falafel on humus, chop chop salad, and a house made pita topped with olive oil and za’atar spice.”

C

hief ’s Son Distillery in Somerville has just opened its doors to the public and whisky lovers are in for a treat.

Proprietors Naomi and Stuart McIntosh have created a one of a kind product and they are rightfully proud. They are cofounders, co-owners and co-distillers making them partners in every sense of the word. This is a family business with a past, present and future.

McIntosh translates from Scottish Gaelic as Son of the Chief.

The McIntosh clan was awarded this name 900 years ago through victory in battle. 900 is an important number at Chief ’s Son’s; it’s the name of their standard single malt whiskey recipe and there are 900 bottles in each release.

Meticulous attention to detail shows in every single aspect of the business from the design of their own whisky still to the top shelf labels on their bottles and the logo on their products. Every single element is a story within a story. It’s taken seven years of planning and working seven days a week to get to this point, but in actual fact, this whisky has been over five hundred years in the making.

Though it is considerably more expensive and time-consuming to create a handcrafted product, the McIntoshes feel it is worth the effort. They take their role as the ‘malt whisky custodians’ of their generation very seriously because they are the first generation of the Australian McIntosh family to make whisky. Using the knowledge passed down through their ancestors and the benefit of modern technology combined with their own educational backgrounds, they have created the best whisky money can buy.

Whiskey has been in the blood of the McIntosh family since the early 1500s with each successive generation of distillers putting its own stamp on this ancient Scottish tradition. At Chief ’s Son tradition is important. Their business name is their namesake.

Making good whisky is a complex process. There are three main recipes and two processes involved which sounds deceptively simple, but it’s not. Too get the taste, aroma and mouth feel just right involves many elements working in perfect harmony.

The heart and soul of whisky is malted barley, but it has to be steeped, germinated and kilned just right. It can then be infused with peat to make another overlay. The barrel the whisky is stored in is critical as it accounts for half the flavour. Also the amount of time it’s stored is paramount.

At Chief ’s Son, they use a special type of pure malt to get their distinctive flavour, which is why their whisky is unique in the world.

They even have their own ‘malster’ to source the best malt barley in Australia. But it’s not just the ingredients; it’s the dedication to producing a craft product. “Craft is about the provenance. It’s about attention to detail. We choose every aspect of the product,” says Stuart, adding, “We make whiskey that we enjoy drinking, but we have to offer something special to our avatars (connoisseurs). We’re confident we do that.” Their boutique small batch process ensures quality and guarantees that every release has a different character.

There are so many details that go into creating a complex yet smooth whisky and all those details matter because no one who loves whisky drinks it in a hurry. As Naomi says,

“Whisky is a slow drink. It’s something you want to savour, not rush.” This slow drinking tradition is how bonds are formed, weddings are celebrated, broken hearts are mended, loved ones are mourned and new friendships are forged. To the McIntoshes, whisky is about all of those connections. In a world where everyone seems to be in a rush, it nice to take the time for a good slow drink.

In the tasting room at Chief’s Son Distillery, there is plenty of time to pull up a stool, have a look out over the distillery floor and have a chat about life, liberty and the love of whisky with people who really know what they are talking about. Come in for a tasting, take home a bottle or bespoke gift pack and if you’re really a fan you might want to sport a snazzy cap or polo top too. One thing is for sure, if you’re a connoisseur of whisky, you won’t go home disappointed.

Flinders

Flinders is a town south of Melbourne, located on the Mornington Peninsula at the point where Western Port meets Bass Strait, located 86 km from Melbourne.

Flinders is located close to the southern tip of the Mornington Peninsula, fronting onto the calm waters of Western Port in the west and offering a rugged coastline of cliffs and ocean beaches along its southern frontage onto Bass Strait.

Flinders is an appealing holiday destination due to its scenic coastal location amongst rolling green hills and the fact that commercial development seems to have forgotten this town, instead preserving the area's natural beauty and scenic views.

Flinders was established in 1854 At the 2016 census, Flinders had a population of 905.

A number of historical buildings exist within the town, complemented by several antique shops, restaurants and cafes In recent times, Flinders has become a hub for the arts with seven galleries along the main street.

Attractions along the coast include Bass Park which provides spectacular views down to the Flinders Jetty and across Western Port, as well as being home to a monument dedicated to George Bass and Matthew Flinders who were the first explorers in the area.

Sanctuary and bordering the Mornington Peninsula National Park. To the west of Flinders, just off Boneo Road, is The Blowhole which includes walking tracks along the rocky coastline and over huge bluestone boulders.

Around 12 kilometres west of Flinders is the small community of Cape Schanck, known for its golf courses and the historic lighthouse situated at the rocky southernmost tip of the peninsula.

The town was named by George Bass after his friend, the explorer and British naval officer Matthew Flinders. Settlement commenced in 1854 and many pioneers and settlers are buried at the Flinders cemetery. Flinders Post Office opened on 7 March 1863 as the population grew.

Flinders was the original home of Flinders Bread, available throughout Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula. The company's operations are now based in Dandenong, but the bread is still available locally.

KEEPING FLINDERS TRADITION Alive

I

t’s a little slice of history right in the main street of Flinders that has withstood the test of time; a monument to its predecessors that date back to 1866. It is the Flinders General Store and it has been providing goods for the people of Flinders and acting as a community hub for nearly 150 years.

“Frank and Olive are my husband’s parents and they bought Alf Murray out in 1959, and stayed on until 1987,” said Pam, who now looks after papers, magazines and alcohol.

Many locals fondly remember the shop as a dark and rambling labyrinth of shelves piled high with everything you could ever imagine. Whilst it is no longer dark and rambling, the store does stock a little bit of everything in true general store fashion.

For Pam, who has a four generation attachment to the area, she remembers going to the general store as a child. “My mum was born in a shop above Cook and Norman just a few doors down from the general store. I remember going into the store as a little girl and now it is wonderful to have been working here for three decades.”

While many things change, some things don’t. Kids still call in on their way home from school every day; the store still has accounts and sells bait to fishermen, and there is even a member of the Commons family working there.

Pam Commons has been working at the store for 30 years and has a significant association from over 60 years ago when Olive Commons, married to Frank Commons, bought a share of the business in 1951.

It then became ‘Murray and Commons’, with Olive working with her uncle while Frank had a job elsewhere.

“My husband finished working in the store when his parents sold it but I began after working in the education department for many years after my children started school.”

Pam says the manager, Kate Parton, and new owners, have made a huge difference to the store and brought it back to life.

“With the combination of the new owner as well as Kate our manager, the shop has changed dramatically, and been brought back to its previous incarnation as a wonderful general store,” said Pam. I am proud to say it is a shop for all the people,” said Kate who also has a strong family link to the area, with her first introduction to Flinders in 1964 when the family emigrated from India.

elebrating three decades in the real estate industry is certainly a milestone, but for L.Cooper Directors, Phil Stone and Jacqui Thompson, the truth is that they have loved every minute.

It is great to look back and be part of a community for so many years

More than 60 years’ experience between the two means these agents have seen a fair amount of change in the area and proudly attest to having been an integral part of that.

“Our company is an independent agency which prides itself on its ability to keep its finger on the pulse of local trends while maintaining a heightened, professional approach with honesty and integrity front of mind,” said Phil and Jacqui who, along with Lynne Cooper, opened the business all those years ago with the sole intention of offering personal and professional service the way they chose to.

“We have always remained the same friendly and down-to-earth agency and it is something we are proud of,” said Phil of the real estate office that began after the pair met while working for Crowders in Somerville. “We decided to go out on our own, to have the opportunity to run our own business, and treat people the way we like to be treated. It has just been Jacqui and I running it for many years now and we make a great team. Jacqui does the rentals and we have a significant rent roll and I do sales.”

Back in the '80's you were not allowed to start a business in the area where you previously worked so L.Cooper first opened an office in Tyabb.

“At first you had to be a certain amount of kilometres away from the business you had worked for, so we started in another town for 18 months until a shop became vacant in Somerville,” said Phil. “That was when we opened in Somerville, near Richie’s, on the corner in late 1990.”

Phil says the market is heading into a rough time with the Royal Commission into banking and house prices dropping by five to ten per cent.

“We have just come out of a great time but are now starting to see another cycle with banks changing their criteria and price reductions on homes,” said Phil and Jacqui, who have seen generations buy and sell through L.Cooper.

“It is great to look back and be part of a community for so many years, and see the way you have helped form an area,” said Jacqui, who is in charge of an extensive rent roll. “We are so proud to be part of an independent agency and help guide the growth of the area that we all live in and love.”

L.Cooper has been responsible for several residential, industrial and commercial projects over the years, has helped thousands of families find homes, and is proud to be Somerville’s longest established agency.

“In thirty years we have seen a massive change in Somerville. When we started there were no supermarkets on the other side of the train tracks and very few housing estates and commercial areas. Now we have a thriving community and feel, in some small way, we helped to shape the township,” said Phil and Jacqui, who moved to a larger office on Frankston Flinders Road about 20 years ago. “We have expanded to a larger office but always stayed with the same friendly, professional service, which we began with all those years ago.”

Starting the business in a recession was difficult for the young directors but they stuck it out and said it taught them a lot about resilience.

“Initially when we opened the office in Tyabb we had come out of a big boom and started our business in a recession, which was fairly difficult for us and our families,” said Phil. “It was when Paul Keating said: ‘This is the recession we need to have’. You quickly learnt that, in real estate, you have to roll with the times; enjoy the good and be resilient when times are tough. Since then, we have seen lots of ebbs and flow with some incredible times and lows again. It is all cyclic and dependent on interest rates to a large extent.”

SOMERVILLE'S ICONIC PHOTOGRAPH

A

lthough the word “iconic” tends to be used rather loosely at times, there are certain photographs for which that description can be justified. Some such photographs are terrifying; others are heart-warming. Sadly, many of the world’s iconic photographs have emerged from an international conflict.

But what of the local level? When she was compiling her book “The Great War Comes to Somerville” Lisa Bayley chose this photograph of five local men who enlisted on the same day (20 July, 1915).

It seems to express so much: the three men at the rear appear a little apprehensive while the two at the front (the Bond brothers) have a look of eager anticipation. You can almost hear one of them

saying “Let’s get over there and sort out this bloody Kaiser bloke.”

Perhaps a question that should be asked is: “How did these five young men fare over the next few years?” In fact only four returned and they were all damaged in some way; the Bonds, who looked so confident in 1915, suffered the most. Here is an account of what was experienced on the Western Front: William Arthur (“Will”) Bond William Bond was killed at Fromelles on 19 July, 1916 and is buried at Aubers Ridge British Cemetery. (Fromelles was, in fact, the biggest disaster in Australia’s military history with the 5th Division losing 5533 men in one night’s action.) continued next page...

Charles Rundle (“Charlie”) Bond Charles Bond was a member of the 5th Pioneer Battalion and spent several years at the Front. His luck ran out on 17 April, 1918 when he was a victim of “gas shell poisoning”. After spending some time in the Reading War Hospital in England, he returned to Australia in April, 1919.

However, like many of those who were gassed, Charlie never recovered and he died on 6 October, 1941. He was 47.

John Edwin (“Jack”) Cozens John Cozens became a driver with the 59th Battalion and experienced his first hospitalization in Egypt with diarrhoea. At the Front he was hospitalized on 16 November, 1916 when “injured in the field.” In fact he sustained a broken jaw.

On 24 September, 1917 he was wounded in action experiencing “shrapnel in legs and buttock.” This required hospitalization in London although he was able to rejoin his battalion in January, 1918. He, too, returned to Australia in April, 1919. There is no further information in the official records although one could assume, in light of the location of his wound, Jack would have generally preferred to stand rather than sit.

Samuel Henry (“Harry”) Male Samuel Male left Melbourne on the same ship (HMAT Ulysses) as Jack Cozens on 27 October, 1915 and was allocated to the 7th Battalion. By July 1916 Harry was in hospital in France with a persistent knee problem, probably something that he was able to hide when he had his medical back in Australia. After some time in London he was repatriated to Australia in February, 1917.

Although he might not have felt so at the time, Harry was probably the luckiest of the five.

Robert Charles (“Rob”) Young Robert Young became a member of the 58th Battalion and suffered his first hospitalization in Egypt in February, 1916, with measles. By December, 1916, he, too, was in France where he was admitted to hospital in May, 1917, with “trench fever.” By October, 1917, he was back in hospital with an illness diagnosed as “shell shock”; this was apparently the result of being buried in a trench at Polygon Wood. (This battle, part of the Third Battle of Ypres, took place between 26 September and 3 October, 1917. Today it is commemorated by the memorial for the 5th Australian Division.)

No further information is contained in the file of Rob Young; some men were able to overcome their shell shock but for others it was a burden which they carried for the rest of their lives.

So we can conclude that none of the five came home unscathed and, indeed, one never came home at all. But wait, there’s more!

While the Bond brothers joined up at the same time, it should be noted that both Harry Male and Rob Young had brothers who had already enlisted. It is interesting to see how they fared.

Edward George (“Ted”) Male Edward Male joined up only a week before his brother and became part of the 13th Light Horse Regiment. His service was plagued by illness which started in February, 1916 when he was admitted to hospital with “orchitis” while still in Staging Camp. Over the next two years while in France he was frequently hospitalized; this include a bout of influenza in late 1916, “debility” on several occasions, a “contused” foot and “pyrexia.” He returned to Australia in May, 1919, having spent much of his time on the sick list.

William Hay (“Billy”) Young William Young enlisted several months before his brother (in April, 1915) and was posted to the 24th Battalion. His first few months overseas were plagued by bouts of pneumonia, when he was reported as being “dangerously ill”, as well as a bout of diarrhoea, before he joined his unit in France on 25 July, 1916. A month later he was in England recovering from “GSW left leg and foot.” Back in France his luck ran out on 26 August, 1916 when he experienced “GSW right leg”; another evacuation was required. After returning to France he was hospitalized on 14 October, 1917 with “trench fever”, and then “trench feet.” Restored to health he was back in France in early February, 1918, only to be gassed a month later.

He rejoined his unit on 26 July, 1918 but was back in hospital with “tachycardia” on 5 August. In January, 1919 Billy Young was invalided back to Australia and was discharged as “medically unfit.”

His service history qualified him for a TPI pension.
