A Letter From the President

First and foremost, congratulations to our Back-to-Back Stanley Cup Champions! Wow, the Cup sure changes everything. These two seasons were a thrilling time, both on and off the ice.

Not only did the team leave its mark on history, but also the Foundation experienced back-toback, record-breaking successes. In 2016.17, we awarded over $1.2 million to 109 organizations in grants funded by our 50/50 Raffle. This impressive contribution was on the heels of $1.1 million awarded in 2015.16. And, because of our tremendous ownership, players, staff, fans and corporate partner support, the Foundation added to that total investing over $7 million into charitable, community and youth-oriented projects during the most recent season.

The Penguins organization is truly the model within the NHL for the development of innovative youth hockey programs. We are proud to have supported these programs financially, which are managed by our youth and amateur hockey group. From growing our Little Penguins Learn to Play program to introducing Give Hockey A Shot to showing that hockey is for everyone with Hockey Sticks Together, we continue to impact this great game in our region and beyond.

With that said, our mission statement is about more than just hockey. It is about kids and our belief that “Kids are the Future.” During the 2016.17 season, we worked to pioneer new programs to help kids in our community become “Future Champions.” Our educational programs like the STEAM Lending Library and Tablets in Education continue to expand and to impress educators and students alike. Oneder, a special needs application for children with Autism, has helped over 300 kids in the classroom. The outcomes are outstanding.

Further, we recently constructed the first COOL Zone at Edgewood Primary. COOL Zone, built to resemble an igloo and provide a safe space, is an early intervention behavioral health and therapeutic program for kids ages 3-8. Based on the positive impact seen in just a short time, plans are already underway for additional COOL Zone igloos. Finally, our relationship with the Pennsylvania State Police allowed us to introduce PensPacks. This initiative provided 2,350 backpacks and school supplies to Camp Cadet programs and schools with children in need in 22 counties across the state.

We hope you enjoy our 2016.17 Community Report. It elaborates on the above programs, shares player contributions to our community and may even introduce you to little known ways that we work to make a difference.

The Mission

of the Penguins Foundation To actively promote physical well-being, encourage teamwork, stress the value of education, and provide essential life skills to young people in our community through youth hockey and other activities.

The Story of the Penguins Foundation The year 2010 proved to be a year of transition for the Pittsburgh Penguins organization. The team’s longtime home moved from Mellon Arena to a new state-of-the-art arena. That same year, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation was created, enveloping all of the organization’s charitable efforts under one umbrella.

Ironically, the demolition of Mellon Arena created the funding needed to build a base for the Foundation and its programs. Its first initiative was to create ornaments forged from the arena’s roof. From 2010 to today, the Foundation and its projects have grown substantially.

Focused on our region’s youth, the Penguins Foundation has embraced a vast array of programs that emphasize education, physical fitness, and the wellbeing of our area’s children and their families. With strong leadership provided

by Penguins ownership, the Foundation strives to continue its mission of serving the people of Pittsburgh through new and innovative programs.

Presidential Salute During the summer of 2016, the Penguins players and coaching staff visited Washington D.C. to celebrate their 2016 Stanley Cup Championship with President Barack Obama. During the President’s praise of the team for their banner year, recognition was also given to the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation.

A Great Day for the Foundation In 2016, the City of Pittsburgh designated July 12 as “Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation Day” during a ceremony hosted by Pittsburgh City Council. The Penguins Foundation was honored for the organization’s continued support of the Pittsburgh community and its impact on the region through efforts such as Project Power Play, HEADS UP Pittsburgh, and Tablets in Education. Members of Pittsburgh City Council also shared congratulations with the Foundation on the team’s recent Stanley Cup victory during the proclamation presentation.

Inspired by Michelle’s ‘Let’s Move!’ initiative, the Penguins Foundation started Project Power Play to get more kids exercising -- and now it’s helping to restore city and county parks across Pittsburgh.

The Foundation is also raising awareness about concussions for young athletes.

Game Day Fundraising 50/50 Raffle The Penguins Foundation donated $1.2 million to local charities during the 2016.17 season from funds raised through the 50/50 Raffle on gamedays. A total of 109 local 501(c)3 charities were awarded grants that ranged on average from $5,000 to $15,000 allowing them to continue their valuable work in the community. Over the past five seasons since the Foundation introduced the 50/50 Raffle, more than $4.1 million has been awarded to local charities through the Penguins Foundation’s grant process using funds generated from 50/50 Raffle ticket sales.

The Penguins Foundation has been advocating and supporting STAT since I met Dave Soltesz, President of the Foundation, in 2014. The first grant STAT received was seed money to start a Summer Adventure Camp for Autistic individuals. As I told him about the camp, he could see my vision was much bigger. Then, Dave asked me “Cat, what is your real vision?” I told him I needed to buy land, build a center, a place, where families like mine could come and feel welcomed, where their children can heal, ride horses, and enjoy some part of their day! In just a couple years, the Penguins Foundation has provided support to begin my vision and to build the Ligonier Therapeutic Center. Their support precipitated everything we do at the Center now and into the future. We opened for business in late Summer of 2016 and are providing unique treatments (Hippotherapy, using horses as PT, OT, and Speech therapy) to 27 children (and growing rapidly) with physical disabilities and mental health challenges as well as other programs. Dave Soltesz and his staff treat us like family. They are always rooting for us! ... and, we couldn’t have been where we are today without them.

Auction Through six seasons, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation Auction on gamedays has raised over $1,000,000 to support a variety of Foundation programs. During each Penguins home game, the auction display, located behind Section 104, provides fans with a unique opportunity to bid on fantastic team memorabilia.

Celebrating 50 Years 50th Anniversary Collection In partnership with Wendell August Forge, a Pennsylvaniabased premium metal giftware brand, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation launched its 50th Anniversary Collection to commemorate a half century of Pittsburgh Penguins hockey leading into the 2016.17 season. This exclusive assortment featured a limited edition bronze 50th Anniversary Collector’s Ornament embellished with 50 Swarovski crystals. Other products in the collection included glassware, metal serving trays and additional holiday ornaments, all handmade right outside of Pittsburgh. Proceeds from the sale of these items benefitted the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation’s youth-oriented programs.

Drawing 50 Years To start the 50th Anniversary season, the Penguins Foundation hosted the ‘Pens & Paper: Drawing 50 Years’ contest for children.

Youth ages 5 to 18 were encouraged to sketch their favorite moment in Penguins hockey history for the chance to win tickets to Penguins Fan Fest for their family and to have their artwork displayed at this first-ever team event. Winners in four age categories were selected for their artistic #PensIn50 submissions and helped the Foundation start the historic season in a beautiful way.

Dunkin’ Donuts Donation Dunkin’ Donuts celebrated the opening of its 50th Pittsburghbased store location, in addition to the 50th Anniversary for the Pittsburgh Penguins, with a fundraising promotion to benefit the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. For each medium cup of coffee sold at each of the 50 Pittsburgh-area Dunkin’ Donuts locations on January 30, 2017, Dunkin’ Donuts donated 50 cents to the Penguins Foundation. On February 16, 2017, key representatives from Dunkin’ Donuts presented a check for $5,255, the total amount collected through the promotion, to the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation prior to the home game against the Winnipeg Jets.

Military Support I.C. Light Hometown Hero

Operation Troop Appreciation

Throughout the 2016.17 season, the Penguins and Pittsburgh Brewing teamed up to recognize members of the military.

Hometown Heroes were honored on the carpet prior to the National Anthem with a formal welcome by the announcer and a roar from the sold out Penguins crowd saluting Hometown Heroes for their service.

During the 2016.17 season, the Penguins Foundation furthered their partnership with Operation Troop Appreciation by providing a $10,000 donation funded by the in-game 50/50 Raffle. The $10,000 grant will help further the OTA mission, which is to build and sustain the morale and well-being of the military community, past and present, with the assurance that the American public supports and appreciates their selfless service and daily sacrifices.

Veterans at Practice On November 10, 2016, the Penguins honored select U.S. military veterans during the team’s annual Veterans Day tradition.

Each veteran received a personalized jersey, lunch in Suite 66, and a meet-and-greet with Penguins players. In addition, each veteran enjoyed the Penguins practice that day creating memories to last a lifetime.

Camouflage Jersey Auction The Pittsburgh Penguins players wore special camouflage jerseys during pregame warm-ups on November 10, 2016. The jerseys were autographed and auctioned online through November 21, 2016 to raise money for the Veterans Leadership Program of Western Pennsylvania. In total, the auction raised over $29,400 to support the cause.

Veterans Leadership Program of Western Pennsylvania The Veterans Leadership Program recognized the Penguins Foundation on May 25, 2017 with the Corporate Leader Award. The award thanked the Foundation for its ongoing support and unwavering commitment to help VLP fulfill its mission of providing Veterans and their families with housing, employment and supportive services, regardless of era of war, Veterans Affairs eligibility or discharge status.

Military In-Game Welcomes Military members were acknowledged during each Penguins home game with a welcome displayed on the videoboard and an accompanying public address announcement to thank them for their tremendous service.

On June 30, 2017, the Penguins Foundation was proud to cheer on bicyclists departing from downtown Pittsburgh as they set off to conquer 335 Miles For Veterans... all the way to D.C. During this tremendous farewell, the Penguins Foundation presented a $5,000 check to the Veterans Leadership Program with County Executive Rich Fitzgerald. The donation was part of a friendly Stanley Cup Final wager between Fitzgerald, Mayor William Peduto and Nashville’s Metro Mayor Megan Barry.

Pens & the Police

Many times we come across children who are in need of school supplies not just at the beginning of the year but throughout.

Working with the Foundation to get PensPacks to surrounding schools and organizations was so impactful. Teachers were happy to know that their students would have the items they needed for their continued success.

PensPacks The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) teamed up to supply backpacks to children in Western Pennsylvania as part of a new program, PensPacks. Members of the Foundation’s staff along with PSP Troopers and their families worked to fill 2,350 backpacks with school supplies. PSP’s Camp Cadet received a donation of 900 backpacks with the remaining 1,450 backpacks distributed by PSP Troopers from 12 troops to schools in 22 counties.

Fallen Hero On November 21, 2016, the Penguins Foundation coordinated a gameday collection to benefit the family of fallen Officer Scott Bashioum before the Penguins game against the New York Rangers. The Western Pennsylvania Police Benevolent Foundation, along with local police officers, collected donations inside of PPG Paints Arena in support of Officer Bashioum, a seven year veteran of the Canonsburg Police Department and a

Veteran who served during the Persian Gulf War and Operation Enduring Freedom. To assist in the collection efforts, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation contributed $10,000 to the Officer Scott Bashioum Children’s Memorial Fund with over $43,900 donated in total.

Camp Cadet During the 2016.17 season, the Penguins Foundation provided continued support to Camp Cadet, which is a tuition free one week event, staffed by local State Police, County Police, County Sheriffs and local Municipal Police Officers who serve as counselors and instructors. The Foundation’s support, totaling $50,000, will reach Camp Cadets in 22 counties of Pennsylvania and will assist the program in giving children a better understanding of law enforcement activities, improving self-discipline, building self-esteem and building confidence through teamwork and making new friends.

Merry Making

Children’s Hospital Visit Since the early 1980s, members of the Pittsburgh Penguins, along with team mascot Iceburgh, don their Santa hats and spread cheer to children spending the holidays in Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC. Players take time to visit with children and their families and to pass out gifts for the patients. This year, on December 12, 2016, the Penguins players presented each patient with a plush penguin or an Amazon Echo Dot. They also signed autographs and posed for pictures. This annual visit has continued to be a treasured tradition that brings joy to countless children who are too sick to make it home for the holiday season.

Project Bundle-Up Shopping Day Every season, the Penguins team up with the Salvation Army for the Project Bundle-Up Shopping Day. This season’s event took place on November 7, 2016 following team practice. The Penguins players spent the afternoon shopping with young children in need of outerwear for the cold winter months. The children also collected autographs and posed for photos before returning to school.

Penguins corporate partners DICK’S Sporting Goods and FOX’S Pizza assisted the Penguins to make this annual event a truly special day for the children.

Holiday Cheer

We have had success with our Stuff-A-Bus campaign over the years, but having the Penguins involvement has sent the amount of donations and awareness to a whole new level and really, really helped out a lot of kids in the region.

Toys for Tots Each December, the Penguins join with the U.S. Marine Corps in hosting a Toys for Tots collection. Over the past twelve years, more than 19,100 toys and $101,000 have been collected to support underprivileged children in our community. This season, the Penguins also partnered with 96.1 KISS Radio’s popular Stuff-A-Bus program to draw more attention and support for children in need during the holidays. Following the gameday collection, Iceburgh, the Penguins Ice Crew, and Foundation staff members personally delivered the toys donated by the Penguins fan base and Cuddles for Kids to the Stuff-A-Bus drop-off location at Robinson Town Centre with an assist from Enterprise Rent-A-Car.

Operation Shoebox The Operation Shoebox program was designed to brighten the holidays for seniors residing in assisted living facilities who would not typically receive visits or gifts over the holidays. Penguins staff members from all departments donated beautifully wrapped Christmas gifts enclosed in shoeboxes. On December 19, 2016, members of the Penguins staff delivered 52 shoebox gifts, plus holiday joy, to the residents of Concordia Franklin Park in Sewickley, PA.

Teaming Up with the WWE In December, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation partnered with AEG and the WWE to raise funds for Connor’s Cure, an organization created by Paul “Triple H” Levesque and Stephanie McMahon, to honor the spirit of Connor Michalek and to support pediatric cancer research. During select December home games, bracelets were sold on the PPG Paints Arena concourse to support the cause. Proceeds from bracelet sales with an additional donation by the Penguins Foundation were then given to Connor’s Cure during a pre-game check presentation on December 16. Sasha Banks from the WWE and Steven Michalek (Connor’s Father) were in attendance to accept the $7,500 donation, which will support The Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Foundation’s pediatric cancer initatives.

Tis the Season to Assist

2016’s Week of Assists:

Week of Assists December 12 through December 16, 2016 marked the Penguins Foundation’s first-ever Week of Assists. Each day, the Foundation performed a random act of kindness by assisting a different organization in the Pittsburgh area. The holiday cheer continued inside PPG Paints Arena at the Tree of Assists during the Penguins home games on December 12, 14 and 16. Fans had the opportunity to purchase a Stanley Cup Champions ornament, mystery puck autographed by a current player and more with all proceeds benefitting three local 501(c)3 organizations: Pressley Ridge, St. Anthony School Programs, and STAT, Inc., raising over $19,000 total. Lastly, the Foundation also conducted an online social media contest in which fans were encouraged to share their own random acts of kindness with the hashtag #WeekOfAssists to enter for a chance to win tickets to an upcoming Penguins game.

Players Give Back Making Wishes Come True On March 18, 2017, the Penguins organization signed five Wish Kids, between the ages of 8 and 17, to honorary one-day contracts to be Pittsburgh Penguins players for the day. The children from the MakeA-Wish Foundation of Greater Pittsburgh & Southern West Virginia were treated to breakfast in the locker room with Penguins players and were able to watch practice from Suite 66 with their families. In addition, several Wish Kids skated with players on the ice following practice with all five attending the following day’s home game at PPG Paints Arena.

Luck O’ The Irish On March 17, 2017, the Pittsburgh Penguins sported vibrant green jerseys during pre-game warmups in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. The jerseys were later autographed and auctioned online, raising nearly $31,000 benefitting the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation.

Bonino’s Beard

Penguins Fan Fest To start the organization’s 50th Anniversary season, the Penguins team and front office staff hosted the inaugural Penguins Fan Fest event for the best fans in hockey. Held on October 9, 2016 inside PPG Paints Arena, Fan Fest welcomed fans of all ages to the ice for a day of Q&A sessions, interactive demonstrations with the players, a kids-only press conference, drop-in hockey, autograph signings, and much more. Tickets were available to the general public for just $10 with all proceeds benefitting the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation.

After the coveted win in game six against the San Jose Sharks in 2016, the Pittsburgh Penguins returned the Stanley Cup back to its home in Pittsburgh. With its return came all the luck and superstitions that brought us through the playoffs including the playoff beards. A week after his return with the cup, Nick Bonino shaved his beard in front of hundreds of fans at Giant Eagle on Camp Horne Road. Both Giant Eagle and Gillette made generous contributions to the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation while also bringing fans together to continue to celebrate the victory brought home by our favorite players and their superstitious beards.

Crosby & Malkin Charity Suites Since 2008, Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin have each purchased a luxury suite at PPG Paints Arena for local youth to enjoy the excitement of Penguins hockey. During the 2016.17 season, the players hosted 26 different charitable organizations in total – each with an emphasis on children who are coping with difficult health issues, economic or family challenges. Suite guests all received a special gift from their host player along with a visit from Iceburgh for a memorable photo opportunity.

Fleury Forever

We’re proud of the outcome, it looks amazing. We’ve been in Pittsburgh for about 14 years, and now having kids, we just know kids are our future. So we wanted to give something back to the community and we thought kids would be a great idea, and a playground, all the kids love it. We thought the Boys and Girls Club would be a perfect fit for us.

29 Project Just 8 days after winning the Stanley Cup in 2017, Marc-Andre Fleury unveiled a state-of-the-art playground and dek hockey rink at the Boys & Girls Club in McKees Rocks. Funded by the Fleury family, the playground features an outdoor structure over rubberized flooring for year-round activities and a water feature for the neighborhood’s children to enjoy during the heat of the summer. In addition, the Club’s indoor dek hockey rink, now branded Rink 29, received a facelift with new hockey nets, score clock and equipment for the children.

This special act of kindness adds an entirely new dimension to our menu of services for the children who depend on us when school lets out. From the onset of this project, it was obvious that Marc-Andre and Veronique shared our passion to make the growing-up years count for the children of the community and that this gift is being presented for all the right reasons.

Pets & Pucks Penguins & Paws Charity Pet Calendar The Penguins Foundation partnered with the Animal Rescue League Shelter & Wildlife Center and the Western PA Humane Society (now Humane Animal Rescue) to create Penguins & Paws, the team’s 2017 charity pet calendar. With outstanding fan support, the calendar raised $85,000 for pets in need. This unique and always-popular calendar featured Penguins players in a casual setting at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex with adoptable animals from the Animal Rescue League and Western PA Humane Society. Over the past four years, calendar sales have reached over $318,000.

Pet Supplies Collection The Penguins held their annual Pet Supplies Collection on March 24, 2017 to benefit the Animal Rescue League Shelter & Wildlife Center and Western PA Humane Society. Over the past six years, the Penguins have collected over 5,300 pet supplies and $23,900 to benefit shelter animals thanks to the unbelievable generosity of the Penguins fan base.

Our partnership with the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation has allowed us to give our animals the care they need and the love they deserve. The Penguins Foundation’s support has helped us to educate the Pittsburgh community on humane care, to find loving homes for abandoned animals, and to raise funds to benefit both our shelter animals and those at our wildlife center. We Love Hockey Moms From April 1 through Mother’s Day on May 14, 2017, the Penguins Foundation celebrated Moms for their commitment to hockey and for bringing glamour to this great game. The celebration focused its efforts on raising funds for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) through sales of a unique line of jewelry handcrafted by Wendell August Forge, pink mystery pucks signed by the Penguins roster, and proceeds from the 50/50 Raffle on April 2, 2017. In addition, the Penguins Foundation gave away 2,500 t-shirts to kids on social media to honor Mom using the hashtag #WeLoveHockeyMoms, plus the Foundation hosted ticket giveaways from the @pensfoundation social media accounts during the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

City of Organ Donation Champions On April 2, 2017, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation announced a $20,000 donation to Donate Life America during the Penguins game vs. the Carolina Hurricanes. The donation, in partnership with the Thirty-Three Foundation and UPMC, will support a city-wide push to dub Pittsburgh as the “City of Organ Donation Champions.”

Every day, 21 people in the United States die while waiting for an organ transplant. This educational initiative will work to #StopTheWait and raise awareness for why citizens should opt to be an organ donor in our region.

Penguins Wives Association

We are very appreciative of the Penguins Wives Association for donating and preparing a meal for the families at the Ronald McDonald House. It is such a comforting feeling for our families who have been at medical appointments all day or visiting their child in the hospital to have a warm meal prepared and waiting – especially during the holiday season. The luncheon gave the families more time to concentrate on why they are here, while bringing joy to the children.

Each holiday season, the Penguins Wives Association hosts an online auction. In December 2016, the ladies created themed baskets filled with items unique to their significant other. Over the past ten years, the team’s wives and girlfriends have donated over $117,000 to local charities through this initiative.

This season’s selected charity, Blessings in a Backpack, received over $16,000 thanks to the Penguins Wives Association’s basket auction.

The Penguins Wives Association embraced the spirit of the holidays by participating in the Adopt-A-Child program. The ladies provided 22 underprivileged children with a variety of new, wrapped gifts for the holidays.

Ronald McDonald House Luncheon On December 12, 2016, the Penguins Wives Association hosted a luncheon at Ronald McDonald House Charities of Pittsburgh.

Children and families staying at RMHC were treated to an Italian feast prepared on-site by the ladies. In addition, Penguins-branded gifts were distributed to the children in attendance while Iceburgh posed for photos with each family sharing in the bountiful meal prior to the holidays.

Pittsburgh is someplace special… It’s like coming back and putting on a pair of old slippers, it’s a comfort factor.

In 1998, the Alumni Association created its signature event, the Pittsburgh Penguins Alumni Charity Golf Classic presented by Verizon, to assist in the mission of local children’s charities. Over 30 former players and coaches, along with the Stanley Cup, gathered at St. Clair Country Club on August 29, 2016 for a beautiful day on the links raising over $50,000 for Achieva, Magee-Womens Research Institute & Foundation, and the Mario Lemieux Foundation. Over the past 19 years, the event has raised over $649,000.

50 Years of Penguins Hockey Throughout the 2016.17 season, the Penguins organization welcomed members of the Alumni Association to PPG Paints Arena during special theme nights to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Penguins hockey. Take It Outside Operation Restore A new community project by the Penguins Foundation, Operation Restore, was announced during the 2016.17 season. The environmentally-conscious program will focus on restoration and upkeep of Pittsburgh City and County green parks. Plans also include playground builds, paint revitalizations, tree plantings, and more throughout the region. Further, the program is designed to engage employees of the Penguins and corporate partners, as well as the great people of the city, in volunteerism. The first Operation Restore project will be restoration of the Cascades, a historical area in the South Park suburb, and the addition of an educational walking trail within the park.

Stadium Series As hockey moved outdoors, the Penguins organization celebrated the community as part of the NHL Stadium Series match-up against the Philadelphia Flyers at Heinz Field. Fans were treated to the NHL’s Centennial Fan Arena event on both February 25 and 26, 2017 outside of Stage AE, which included an appearance by the Stanley Cup. In addition, the Mighty Penguins organization collected used hockey equipment for donation, as part of the NHL’s “Recycle the Game” initiative, outside of Heinz Field.

Finally, during the Stadium Series contest on February 26, a $100,000 check presentation was made by the NHL, PPG and Penguins Foundation to the South Park Ice Skating Rink as the game’s Legacy Project. The tremendous donation will convert the rink into a yearround facility with a brand new sport court surface for ball hockey in the summer; new sets of ball hockey equipment; improved player benches; a brand new scoreboard; energy efficiency upgrades; landscaping enhancements; and upgrading the space to an NHL regulation-sized hockey rink for winter programming.

We have been fortunate to benefit from the Foundation’s quality-of-life investments in this region. We don’t just have a great hockey team which brings our community together, giving us thrills and Stanley Cup championships, but a team which, through its Foundation, continues to invest in our parks.

On March 11-12, 2017, families were invited to the North and South Park ice rinks to attend this action-packed weekend filled with food, face painting, balloon art, and more. Kids had the opportunity to try on hockey equipment and hit the ice with former Penguins Stanley Cup Champion, Tyler Kennedy, through the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation’s Give Hockey A Shot program.

A Penguins Premiere

Pens in Hollywood With the help of Hollywood actor Joe Manganiello, the Penguins Foundation hosted the Pittsburgh premiere of Smurfs: The Lost Village on March 16, 2017 at the Hollywood Theater in Dormont. Manganiello, originally from Mt. Lebanon, is the voice of Hefty Smurf in the feature film. Seven non-profit organizations were present at the event including the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Greater Pittsburgh & West Virginia, Jameson’s Army, Ronald McDonald House Charities of

Pittsburgh, Best Buddies Pennsylvania, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh, DePaul School for Hearing & Speech, and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Pennsylvania.

Families of Colby Armstrong, Mark Recchi, and J.S. Aubin, all members of the Penguins Alumni Association, were also in attendance.

The Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine teamed up in 2011 to create HEADS UP Pittsburgh, the first program of its kind to combat an epidemic of concussions in young athletes. The program has expanded each year to serve more youth in a wider spectrum of sports and to provide training tools to aid in concussion reduction. To date, over 20,000 children have been tested with education awareness provided to over 50,000 parents, coaches, referees and teachers. In addition, 500+ young athletes are involved in concussion research.

Initially, the program included free baseline concussion testing for youth hockey players in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL), Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) and other hockey groups registered locally through USA Hockey programs. As listed at left, HEADS UP Pittsburgh has expanded each year with continuous recognition for its impact on young athletes. To date, athletes in 25 different sports and activities have been baseline tested - including the major sports, cheerleading, dance and more.

PensFit

PensFit A first-of-its-kind program, PensFIT is a Penguins Foundation initiative designed to introduce children to the sport of hockey and facilitate an increase in physical activity by supplying schools with complete sets of floor hockey equipment for use in physical education classes. Since the launch of PensFIT in 2012, the Penguins Foundation has provided free floor hockey equipment to more than 650 elementary and middle schools and community centers in 10 different counties.

Each set of equipment retails for over $1,000 and includes goals, sticks, stick bags, hockey balls, goalie equipment, and a storage bag. The program also provided teacher training, instruction, and supplemental materials for the schools.

Since 2012, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark have partnered to build a total of 12 dek hockey rinks for local communities through their unique Project Power Play program. Project Power Play is a $2.3 million initiative that was designed to build the dozen dek hockey rinks in Pittsburgh and surrounding communities over a four-year period.

In addition to funding by the Penguins Foundation, Highmark provided $1.5 million in funding. The City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and surrounding communities provided the land, as well as maintenance services, lighting, and additional support.

The rinks are multi-purpose courts and are suitable for hockey and other sports, including soccer and lacrosse.

All rink sites were chosen based on a community’s need for this type of facility and a local commitment to develop youth programming. Citiparks and local athletic associations continue to set up programs for the rinks, with assistance from the Penguins organization.

This season, on October 1-2, 2016, the Penguins Foundation hosted the first-ever Dek Hockey Challenge for 350+ children. The youth tournament featured 39 teams in three age groups (7-9, 10-12 and 13-15) with games played at the Project Power Play dek hockey rinks in Brookline, Bloomfield, and Banksville.

Without this program, some of the kids might never have had the chance to do so. This has been a wonderful program to help grow our leagues and expose kids to hockey.

Little Penguins Learn to Play Hockey A unique effort between the Penguins and Sidney Crosby, the Little Penguins Learn to Play program has given 8,400 children throughout the tri-state area an introduction to hockey. The Little Penguins Learn to Play program began in 2008 to share the excitement of our sport and teach our youngest fans about the game of hockey. With the support of Reebok and DICK’S Sporting Goods, the program increased participation in youth hockey among children ages 4 through 8 by providing free equipment, including skates, to all registered participants. In the 2016.17 season, the Little Penguins Learn to Play program outfitted over 1,000 children with 36 instructional sessions at 25 different rinks in Western Pennsylvania.

Give Hockey a Shot Created during the 2016.17 season to provide children the opportunity to try hockey for free, Give Hockey a Shot was designed along with the Pittsburgh Penguins youth hockey division to allow young athletes ages 6-12 to play this great game regardless of income. Give Hockey a Shot allows rinks in the Pittsburgh region to “borrow” one of three fully stocked equipment trailers for up to 30 days with each trailer housing 40 sets of youth hockey equipment.

Dek Hockey Day Camp Each off-season, Penguins prospects gather for a week in Pittsburgh for the team’s annual Development Camp with one day being dedicated to assisting the community. On June 29, 2017, team prospects conducted youth hockey clinics for a total of 120 children when they visited two dek hockey rinks and one YMCA in Pittsburgh. The locations included: North Park, Richland Park and the Rose E. Schneider Family YMCA.

During the 2016.17 season, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation supported the formation of an organization, Hockey Sticks Together, to unite the below programs, which fulfill the NHL’s “Hockey is for Everyone” initiative.

The Pittsburgh Special Hockey Program is an adaptive ice hockey program for both children and adults with developmental disabilities including autism, Down Syndrome and traumatic brain injuries. It focuses on teaching children and adults to play ice hockey in an environment specialized to each individual’s ability. The Steel City Icebergs program is led by dedicated volunteers and USA Hockey adult coaches. Collegiate and youth ice hockey players assist the coaching staff, which allows for a low player-to-coach ratio. In addition, it provides an environment for peer interaction to help the participants learn and form meaningful relationships.

The sport of sled hockey provides a means for physically challenged individuals to play competitive ice hockey. Participants enjoy the physical activity, while the program also builds self-esteem and an opportunity to be a part of a competitive team. The Mighty Penguins were formed by volunteers from Shriners Hospital in Erie in May of 1998. Initially, the goal was to provide children and young adults with physical disabilities the opportunity to participate in a competitive sport. The parents and guardians of these players have seen firsthand the physical and emotional benefits of the program.

Many local organizations have helped the Mighty Penguins program by donating ice time, equipment, customized hockey gear and insurance. Individuals throughout the area volunteer their time and talents to educate and assist the players. In addition, the Mighty Penguins are supported by a Quality of Life grant from the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation.

Pittsburgh ICE (Inclusion Creates Equality) was established in 2000 to afford an opportunity to children with financial restraints to experience all aspects of the game of ice hockey. The program was created with the support of the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Penguins Alumni Association. The Pittsburgh ICE program provides disadvantaged children in the Pittsburgh area the opportunity to learn and experience the game of ice hockey at no cost.

Envision Envision’s mission is to provide youth and adults who are blind or visually impaired with the opportunity to participate in blind ice hockey, build friendships, encourage teamwork, and share an exciting experience with other athletes, volunteers and coaches. Envision is able to give youth and adult athletes, who never thought it would be possible to play a sport like hockey, the opportunity to be a part of this great game. By participating in USA Hockey events, VIP Sports Camps, Try Hockey events, and Canadian Blind Hockey tournaments, Envision’s athletes, volunteers and coaches have shown tremendous growth in the sport of blind ice hockey since the program’s start during the summer of 2016.

Field Trips to PPG Paints Areana Penguins Open Practice On February 27, 2017, over 7,500 students from 52 schools attended the Penguins Open Practice session at PPG Paints Arena. Since its inception, over 67,000 students have participated in the Penguins Open Practice. Not only does the event provide students with an opportunity to watch the team at work, but also it emphasizes the importance of education, health, nutrition, and teamwork. At the conclusion of practice, students received an activity book to take home to further their learning from this tremendous event.

Atlantic 10 Men’s Basketball Championship School Day On March 9, 2017, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and the Atlantic 10 Conference invited over 1,500 students in Allegheny County to enjoy two Atlantic 10 Basketball Championship games at PPG Paints Arena. During this first-time event, students in grades 3 through 8 not only had the chance to see student-athletes at work, but also were able to learn about what it takes to be successful both on and off the court, thanks to an educational session by Nancy Lieberman, a Hall of Famer and current assistant coach with the NBA’s Sacramento Kings.

Soul on Ice Through the Hockey Is for Everyone campaign, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation invited students from Pittsburgh Sterrett and Schiller schools, Tickets For Kids Foundation, and Urban Pathways K-5 College Charter School to PPG Paints Arena’s Lexus Club to preview Kwame Mason’s documentary Soul On Ice: Past Present & Future. The documentary highlights the history of black athletes on the ice and the impact they had on the game of hockey. The film sparked many student’s interest in the game and inspired them to work hard to achieve their dreams.

Tablets in Education

The Penguins Foundation teamed up with the Allegheny Intermediate Unit 3 (AIU3) to create a first of its kind, STEAM Lending Library, which allows schools to borrow the latest in educational technology to expose students to STEAM Learning (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics). Over 50 school districts in Allegheny County have participated in the STEAM Lending Library, which contains over 1,600 individual items.

During the most recent academic year, the program impacted over 23,000 students.

The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation’s Tablets in Education program completed its fourth year providing the latest in tablet technology for elementary school students in Allegheny County and the surrounding communities.

Over 3,900 Kindle tablets have been provided to schools enrolled in this innovative and hightech program. In addition, over 100 apps with an emphasis on education are also available through the Tablets in Education program, with the Foundation investing over $350,000 in app purchases. Since 2013.14, the Penguins Foundation has supplied Kindle tablets to over 275 elementary schools, educational organizations, and special needs programs, impacting over 100,000 students in 11 counties surrounding the city of Pittsburgh.

TeachMate & Oneder Partnership Through the Allegheny Intermediate Unit (AIU3), the Penguins Foundation formed a partnership with TeachMate. This partnership allowed the Foundation to purchase licenses to their special needs software, AutisMate, and Oneder. This software helps students on the Autism spectrum to function in everyday situations, independently.

Support for STEM On May 25, 2017, Imani Christian Academy recognized the Penguins Foundation with the Community Champions Award. The award was presented during the 2017 Imani Christian Academy Gala for the Foundation’s ongoing support of ICA including funding for the institution’s STEM Learning Center.

The Arts The Very Special Arts Exhibit truly is ‘very special.’ The MIU IV is providing an outstanding opportunity for children to be able to showcase their creative spirit, and it provides them with a very important chance to shine.

Very Special Arts Exhibit The Penguins Foundation teamed up with the Thirty-Three Foundation and the Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV to present the 28th Annual Very Special Arts Exhibit at the Pew Fine Art Gallery at Grove City College. In April 2017, this 10-day event featured artwork created by students with special needs from school districts in Butler, Lawrence and Mercer counties. The exhibit showcased the artwork of nearly 100 students with special needs, K-12, from 50 schools in 20 school districts. To serve as a reward for the students’ interest in the arts and to celebrate their achievements, the Penguins Foundation and the Thirty-Three Foundation provided each participant with a backpack filled with art supplies and a custom medal created by Wendell August Forge.

Attack Theatre Partnership

The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation was the lead sponsor of Pittsburgh CLO’s Gallery of Heroes Musical, “Steel.” Members of the CLO took the 50-minute show on the road to local schools and educated over 40,000 students about great historical figures. This year’s series, written by Jason Coll, told the stories of three generations of steelworkers and how their role in the industry impacted a town that steel built. The region’s rich history came to life with stories about the immigrant families of Andrew Carnegie, Henry Clay Frick, and others.

The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, in partnership with Attack Theatre, presented Learning in Motion: an interactive guide for teachers which focuses on integrating kinesthetic learning into the classroom. Physical activity is essential to the body and the mind, and dance is a creative and engaging way to incorporate movement into students’ education.

This year, Attack Theatre traveled for Leap into Action – two regional movement days featuring workshops where students got the chance to participate in this new way of learning. In addition, the two organizations joined forces to create an educational, danceable, familyfriendly card game called “Take a Bow.” Each student who participated received the game to further the learning-through-moving process at home.

Holiday Card Contest During December, the Penguins Foundation looked for an assist from students in Allegheny County in an effort to share a Penguins message of holiday cheer. The Foundation hosted a contest for children to design the organization’s 2016 holiday card. In total, 10 students were selected for their unique, hockey-themed artwork and were treated to 100 copies of their card design plus tickets to a Penguins game.

Therapy Through the Igloo

COOL Zone In partnership with the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic of UPMC, the Children Overcoming Obstacles and Limits (COOL) Zone, is an early intervention behavioral health evaluation program for kids ages 3 through 8. Shaped like an “Igloo” to provide a safe space for children, the COOL Zone provides a community-based mental health program for young children who are at a high risk at developing, or who currently have, a behavioral health diagnosis. The COOL Zone aims to assist children dealing with traumatic experiences, such as community violence, poverty, and domestic abuse who may be displaying behavioral issues at school.

Our collaboration on the COOL Zone project with the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation has enabled our agency to provide behavioral health services to children in a creative and innovative way. The therapeutic playroom – the COOL Zone – with an Igloo for play therapy and specially designed programming centered around a penguins theme, provides a child-friendly and engaging setting where children and families can feel at ease obtaining mental health services and support.

Scholarships

Penguins Foundation Scholarship

Penguins Alumni Scholarship

The Penguins Foundation scholarship program is open to all Pittsburgh Public Schools plus select schools in Allegheny County. Each scholarship is valued at $1,500 for the first year of college with an additional $1,000 award for the student’s second year if a 3.0 GPA is maintained with a minimum of 24 credit hours earned. In 2016.17, the Penguins Foundation awarded 21 scholarships. Since its inception, the Penguins Foundation has awarded 131 Penguins Foundation Scholarships in total.

The Penguins Alumni Association annually awards a $2,000 scholarship to a Western Pennsylvania high school senior who has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, good citizenship, school and community involvement, and has shown an intense love for the game of hockey. Since 2005, the alumni have awarded 13 scholarships to deserving student-athletes. The 2016.17 recipient, Nathan Carnovale, attended PineRichland High School in Gibsonia, PA.

Bob Johnson Memorial Scholarship In 1992, an annual scholarship was created in memory of Bob Johnson, the Penguins late head coach who led the team to its first Stanley Cup Championship. Co-sponsored by the Penguins Booster Club, the $5,000 scholarship is awarded to a Western Pennsylvania high school senior for academic excellence, community service and for providing leadership and sportsmanship as a member of their high school’s hockey team. To date, 27 Bob Johnson Memorial Scholarships have been awarded, with the 2016.17 Bob Johnson Memorial Scholarship going to Antonio J. Misiti of Central Catholic High School.

Pens 4 Purpose

Kids Helping Kids Launched in the fall of 2015, Pens4Purpose challenges local colleges and universities to show how they are making a difference in their communities. During November of 2016, the Penguins Foundation received video submissions from student groups showing the impact that they’re making on campus and beyond.

VIP Dinner & Wine Tasting Gala

The Wine Tasting Gala was awesome, educational, entertaining, and so much more. We sat at a table with parents of other special needs family members and shared wonderful conversation with them about various ways they support people with disabilities in partnership with the Penguins Foundation. George was thrilled to be a keynote speaker at the Gala, and we were honored to be able to share why we are so passionate about our kids. The funds we receive from the Penguins Foundation have given us the opportunity to continue our work with Friends to Friends, Inc. Foundation.

A Sip Down Under The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation hosted its 6th Annual VIP Dinner & Wine Tasting Gala presented by Highmark on November 14, 2016 at PPG Paints Arena raising over $165,000. Guests celebrated 60+ wines during the spectacular evening with featured wines hailing from Australia. While mingling with Penguins coaches, alumni, and local Pittsburgh personalities, guests were transported to the Land Down Under with unique décor, Australian cuisine, authentic Aboriginal artwork, and more to bring the Outback to the ice. Entertainment included sounds of the mesmerizing Aboriginal didgeridoo, Australian tunes played by Walt Churchey and Jackie Kopco, plus live animals from Down Under including a baby kangaroo.

The evening’s featured speaker, George O’Donnell from Friends to Friends, shared an impactful poem with guests during the event’s VIP dinner in the Lexus Club -- reminding guests of the Gala’s purpose, which is to support youth special needs initiatives. Over the past six years, the event has raised over $1,065,000 for such causes.

Aces & Ice Casino Night

The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and our CF community throughout western Pennsylvania extend our sincere thanks and appreciation to the Pittsburgh Penguins for teaming up to help in the fight against CF. The 2017 Aces & Ice Casino Night is helping the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation take more shots on its goal – a cure for all people with cystic fibrosis.

Pens in Wonderland On February 1, 2017, guests of the 3rd Annual Aces & Ice Casino Night presented by Trib Total Media were transported through the looking glass and into the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. Down a white hallway of luminous multicolored lights and up to a checkered floor, Alice herself greeted guests. Walking on the floor of PPG Paints Arena was actually like being in Wonderland with many guests donning amazing hats to fit the theme. Penguins players, dressed in brightly colored bowties, played the role of casino dealers for blackjack and craps with a magician and caricature artist adding an element of whimsy to this unique event. Since 1986, the team has hosted a signature gala-style fundraiser with the full Penguins roster for the benefit of local children’s charities and has raised over $6.4 million for medical research. In total, this season’s event raised over $165,000 to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and Mario Lemieux Foundation.

Charity Night on ROOT Sports

2 Million for 2 Causes The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Mario Lemieux Foundation teamed up for the 6th Annual Penguins Charity Night on ROOT Sports on March 5, 2017.

The annual event raised over $2 million for the two foundations in just one night. A total of 6,200 Penguins Charity Duffel Bags were sold both online and at the Penguins game. Each Penguins Charity Duffel Bag included Penguins merchandise and team memorabilia including one autographed puck from the current Penguins roster. Fans also had the chance to receive a jersey signed by Mario Lemieux or a member of the Penguins team within their Penguins Charity Duffel Bag. Without a doubt, the highlight of this season’s Penguins Charity Duffel Bag was a 50th Anniversary Book created in partnership with the Hockey Hall of Fame detailing the team’s storied history. Since 2012, the annual auction has raised over $6.7 million, with proceeds benefitting the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer and neonatal research and the Penguins Foundation’s youth initiatives.

The outpouring of support from fans each year, during Penguins Charity Night on ROOT SPORTS exceeds all expectations but at the same time we are not surprised by the size of their hearts and willingness to help others. Since its inception in 2012, we’ve seen the profound impact this event has had on the Mario Lemieux Foundation, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and the wonderful charities and individuals that they support. It’s been a humbling experience for us to share so many inspiring stories and document the progression that these passionate people working to make everyday life better and a little easier for so many. We are proud to be a part of a community that is so dedicated to giving back, and we look forward to supporting the efforts of two amazing organizations for years to come.

Racing for Charity The Penguins Foundation hosted the 4th Annual 6.6K Run and Family Walk presented by Highmark and CONSOL Energy in partnership with the Mario Lemieux Foundation on October 16, 2016. Over 5,200 participants took to the streets in support of the charities with the race beginning and ending at PPG Paints Arena. This seasonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s event was truly memorable with a surprise visit by the Stanley Cup at the start line. In total, nearly $190,000 was raised this season by the event participants to benefit the Penguins Foundation and Mario Lemieux Foundation.

Swinging Fore Scholarships On September 20, 2016, the Penguins organization welcomed in the new hockey season by hosting a golf tournament at Allegheny Country Club to fund the Penguins Foundationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s annual scholarship programs. With the tournamentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s overwhelming success and the support of UPMC, Foundation scholarships have increased from three in 2013 to 21 scholarships in 2016. A Penguins tradition for decades, the scramble-style tournament featured Penguins players and coaches serving as celebrity team captains.

Hockey Fights Cancer

Black & Gold Go Purple The annual Hockey Fights Cancer Awareness Night is held each autumn at a selected October home game, highlighting the Hockey Fights Cancer (HFC) program as a league-wide initiative to raise awareness and funds for cancer research. This season, on October 25, 2016, the façade of PPG Paints Arena was lit purple in tribute to HFC, while the Penguinsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; coaching staff and broadcasters donned purple HFC ties to support the initiative. Penguins players wore purple jerseys during the morning skate and throughout pre-game warmups. The commemorative HFC jerseys were then autographed and auctioned online, raising over $26,700, to benefit the Mario Lemieux Foundation and UPMC Cancer Center.

Free Game for Kids

Loud & Penguins Proud A team tradition since 2010, the Penguins Free Game for Kids gives our youngest fans an opportunity to attend a preseason home game. Over 18,000 tickets were distributed to local childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s charities and youth hockey organizations for the September 28, 2016 pre-season home game. Since the programâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s inception, approximately 126,000 tickets have been provided to children and their parents, guardians, or chaperones to share in the excitement of Penguins hockey.

Our Away Game All-Star is Chase from Hawaii! His dad is a Staff Sergeant in the United State Marine Corps currently stationed in Hawaii and recently returned from Afghanistan.
