Longevity noodles SERVES 6 TOTAL PREPARATION AND COOKING TIME 40 mins

Ingredients :

ABOUT DANIELLE PEITA GRAHAM Danielle is half Malaysian Chinese (mother) and half Irish (father). She grew up in Australia but is now travelling between her homes in Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong. She has her own cookbook (On The Table At Home) and range of kitchenware including pots, pans, chopping boards, cooking utensils, scissors, knives (Elite, Essential and Amaze Kids ranges) and aprons which are available at Kitchen Shop. Danielle is an actress and model, and she had even once been the model for the Olay brand and was therefore known by some as "Olay Girl".

3 crabs 6 dried shiitake mushrooms 1 cup hot water 2 tbs vegetable oil 6 slices ginger, julienned 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 1 red onion, thinly sliced 1 tsp shaoxing rice wine 1 tbs soy sauce White pepper, to taste 2 tbs oyster sauce 300ml chicken stock Half bunch choy sum, washed and trimmed 1 packet e-fu noodles (long & flat, available from Asian grocery stores) 1 tbs cornflour (cornstarch) 6 spring onions, trimmed and cut into 2.5cm pieces 1 tsp sesame oil

1. Wash the crabs, put them in a shallow dish and pour over half cup water. Put the dish in a metal or bamboo steamer, cover with a tight fitting lid and steam over a saucepan or wok of simmering water for 10 minutes, or until the crabs are just cooked through. Remove the crabs and hold them under cold running water to cool them down.

Remove the crabmeat and set aside.

2. Soak the shiitake mushrooms in the hot water for 20 minutes.

Squeeze out the excess water from the mushrooms, reserving the soaking water. Thinly slice the mushrooms, discarding the stems, and set aside.

3. Heat the vegetable oil in a wok or large frying pan over medium-high heat. Add the ginger, garlic and onion and cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Add the mushroom and stir-fry for 30 seconds.

Add the sugar, shaoxing rice wine, soy sauce, white pepper and oyster sauce. Stir to combine. Add the reserved mushroom water and the chicken stock, stir through and bring to the boil. Add the crabmeat and choy sum and toss to combine. Add the noodles and cook for 5 minutes.

4. Combine the cornflour with 1 tablespoon cold water in a small bowl. Add the mixture to the wok and stir through gently to thicken the sauce. Add the spring onion and sesame oil and stir through.

Remove from the heat, transfer the noodles to a serving bowl and serve immediately.

JUXTAPOSED against modern buildings, the ornate Kuan Ti Temple along Jalan Tun HS Lee (near Petaling Street), is one of Kuala Lumpur’s oldest and most characterful places of worship having been completed way back in 1888. Also known as Guan Di Temple, it is dedicated to the Taoist God of War and Literature.

It is easily recognisable and spotted with its bright red facade and jade green roof adorned by ornate sculptures of dragons and chi lins. Like many Chinese temples, it is ‘guarded’ by two stone lions perched on pedestals near the entrance. They symbolically ward off negative energy and form a side of the door and the female on the right (if you are on the inside looking out).

Behind them are the two Door Gods. A statue of Guan Di sits on the main altar, alongside a 59kg copper guan dao - a crescent blade - which devotees believe possess special powers. It

除了主坛，庙的另一端也供奉另一尊 关帝。此雕像脸色如红枣, 鬚长二呎, 丹鳯眼, 卧 蚕眉, 手持青龙偃月刀, 胯下赤兔马；是根据他在 14世纪的著名历史小说《三国演义》中作者的描 述，也是最原始的描述。同时，也有人认为红色 象征忠诚公义，雕像造型源自于戏曲演变而来。 信徒们讲这尊伟大的神像成为关帝（或称关羽） ，并进香祀奉，顶礼膜拜。 放眼望去，庙内还有做工精湛的石雕 龙柱支撑着大殿建筑，无形中增加了寺庙的整体 美感和庄严神圣感，更彰显了古色古香的气息。 除了关帝爷，这里还供奉其他神明，如：财神、 观世音菩萨、文昌星君等等。 信众可以在柜台购买元宝蜡烛香料进 行膜拜。阵阵飘来的檀香味洗涤了心灵，令内心 充满祥和与平静。实地走访这座神圣美丽的庙宇 ，让这里的一砖一瓦细细地叙述着历史的故事。 摄影爱好者更不能错失这个拍照的机会，把这里 的每一个故事，收录在照片里。

Malaysia’s bustling cosmopolitan capital, Kuala Lumpur, is well-known as a shopper and foodie’s paradise. With upmarket malls offering luxury labels and mid-range merchandise alongside almost every international cuisine imaginable, one is spoilt for choice when wanting to splurge and indulge.

But what if you’re a little tight on the wallet, or prefer a good bargain? Then the night markets are certainly worth a visit. Less heralded but equally interesting to shop at, these offer vast varieties of merchandise at dirt cheap prices. And the most happening one has to be Petaling Street – the city’s original Chinatown.

An Oriental-styled entrance archway bearing the words ‘Jalan Petaling/Petaling Street’ in gold welcomes visitors. Beyond that is a covered stretch occupied by scores of vendors peddling everything from clothing and accessomore.

Each night, it comes to life as scores of locals and tourists flock in search of a good deal.

Variety is half the appeal, value for money the other. Quoted prices can sometimes be up to a third higher than what the products are truly worth, so whittle it down through hard bargaining.

Besides good haggling skills, your appearance and demeanour can also tip the scales in your favour. Dress simple and unassumingly, for flashy outfits and bling can be a dead giveaway that you’re loaded and tempt vendors

into milking you for more. Also, it helps to put on a poker face. Take the time to inspect the item you like and avoid appearing overly keen to have it.

And don’t feel embarassed or guilty making lowball offers. It’s both the culture and name of the game here.

Feeling peckish in the midst of all the bargain hunting? Food is plentiful throughout Petaling Street – as the interesting aromas Chinese and seafood restaurants, some of which have been in operation for generations, are great

Hawker stalls and street vendors offer everything from noodles to deep fried snacks.

Visitors from overseas should try a little bit of everything to fully experience the diverse local flavours. Best yet, many of these joints are open past midnight, so you’ll never leave hungry.

The sights, sounds and energy of Petaling Street today are a far cry from its past.

The stretch was once a centre for production of Kapitan or civil administrator Yap Ah Loy to provide alternative employment for Chinese miners returning to then-Malaya following the end of the Selangor Civil War in the 1870s. This is why many locals affectionately refer to Petaling Street as ‘Chee Cheong Kai’ which translates into ‘starch factory street’ in Cantonese.

With modern rideshare apps, getting to Petaling Street is a breeze. But if you prefer public transport, many bus routes pass through the area.

Several train stations are nearby and within walking distance – the LRT (Pasar Seni or Masjid Jamek stations), KTM Komuter (Kuala Lumpur station) or Monorail (Maharajalela station).

茨厂街的名称由来源自于十九世中期。当时，这条街是吉隆坡 的第三任华人甲必丹叶亚来所开设茨粉生产中心的地点。1870年，雪兰 莪内战结束后，叶亚来的茨粉工厂为许多失业的矿工造就就业机会。之 后，大家都称这条街为‘Chee Cheong Kai ’，因为其名称是以 ‘茨粉 工厂街’ 的粤语翻译为之。 要去茨厂街很简单，只要通过一些手机应用程序来叫车，或乘 搭公共交通如巴士或捷运，再步行即可抵达。

还未踏入茨厂街，从远处便能看见上面镶着金色字体——茨厂 街，带着东方风格的入口牌坊。沿路上人山人海，摊位多不胜数；从服 装、配饰、纪念品、手工艺品到玩具，贩卖的物品种类繁多，琳琅满目 。 卖家拉客的声音、讨价还价的吵杂声、小孩的嬉闹声等等，都 成了这里每个晚上热闹的象征。基于茨厂街成了游客们必逛的夜市，一 般上商家报出的价格会比实价还要高出三倍，从而赚取更多利润。倘若 想避免被“宰”，那就得使出议价的本领。 除了要懂得议价，更要懂得如何打扮。商家通常会依买家的穿 着来打价格；比如全身上下都穿着名牌的和穿着轻便的买家所得到的价 格会相隔好几倍。因为杀价议价是这里的文化之一，所以在跟商家议价 时可别因露出尴尬的表情而露出马脚！

The heart of Malaysian culture and must-visit destination offering visitors not just ample shopping and dining options, but also the opportunity to experience the country’s rich and diverse cultural heritage all under one roof.

One of Kuala Lumpur’s most notable landmarks and popular tourist attractions, it traces its origins back to 1888 as a simple wet market build by Yap Ah Loy – the city’s famous Chinese Kapitan. It proved popular with early city dwellers thanks to its convenient location along Jalan Hang Kasturi, a stone’s throw away from Petaling Street and close to a feeder bus hub.

The art deco-styled building that stands today was completed in the late 1930s.

Several renovations and expansions had been done over the years to keep the market up to date with needs of the time. Much like San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf, London’s Covent Garden, Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar or its Spanish namesake in Valencia – Central Market has managed to stay relevant and continue attracting the crowds.

But it could all have been so different.

When the wet market was relocated in the 1980s, and the city experiencing rapid development, there were plans to demolish the site. But the Malaysian Heritage Society successfully petitioned against this, and even secured it ‘Heritage Site’ status. Following a multi-million Ringgit allocation by the Federal Government,

whilst still retaining its classic, yesteryears charm.

Today, it houses over 300 shops selling ibles. These are grouped into zones, including 3 highlighting the main ethnicities found in Malaysia – Lorong Melayu, Lorong Cina and Lorong India – each stock full with their respec-

tive cultural offerings.

There is also a Malacca Jonker Street featuring Peranakan or Baba Nyonya architecture, antiques, fabrics and more, a Rumah Melayu recreating the quaint charm of a kampung house, and Lorong Kelapa that offers a vast variety of local snacks. Complementing all that are a collection of restaurants and a food court, located on the second floor.

The market’s Outdoor Stage routinely features performances and displays of colourful Malaysian culture. From music to dances and everything in between, they give visitors unique insight into the local ethnic groups’ distinct traditions and practices.

Festival seasons are great times to visit Central Market, as that’s when vendors bring out their best wares. Chinese New Year typically sees the bazaar filled with all sorts of tasty treats and traditional garments, whilst Hari Raya brings out the best sweets, titbits and delicacies. During Deepavali, kaleidoscopic arrays of sarees and other merchandise are on sale, whilst Christmas and the year-end holidays heralds the arrival of all things cute and magical.

Central Market’s Annexe has also been transformed to house an ecelectic assortment of galleries, as well as an Art Lane with studios featuring the works of local artists. Art lovers will certainly enjoy browsing and buying here, as there’s everything from contemporary art to caricature, batik and more to be found.

The newest addition is Kasturi Walk, located alongside the main building. A pedestrian-friendly covered walkway, it opened in 2011 and has an al fresco setting with lots of stalls selling local snacks, souvenirs and more.

Central Market Kuala Lumpur is just a five-minute walk from Petaling Street and

Chinatown, and is among the stops of both the KL Hop-On Hop-Off and GOKL bus services. Close to 20 Rapid KL Bus routes also pass through the area. The ‘nian gao’ or gold cake is sandwiched between a generous chunk of sweet potato and yam, then coated in batter and deep friend until golden brown. Sink your teeth into the chunky crispy outer while the gooey ‘nian giao’ is such a sinful delight. Talk about indulging Teochew cuisines in Kuala Lumpur and the name, Restoran Teochew Lao Er would pop up. They have been pampering the palates of many with their scrumptious traditional Teochew fare for the past 35 years. A business that has been passed down from generation to generation and as of now, it is being handled by the 3rd generation – the grandson. The family business started off with serving mixed-dishes rice platters and it was until 2011 when they decided to turn it into a contemporary main course dining concept which created an opportunity to introduce the delightful gastronomic flavours and taste of Teochew cuisines to even more people.

The restaurant is brightly lit, simple yet it welcomes you to a comfortable cosy dining ambiance. The menu consist of a mix of braised, stewed, steamed and fried dishes. From irresistible starters right until mouth-watering desserts, one look at the menu and everything shown in the menu seems to be a magnet to the eyes. With so many items available, deciding which to order would be quite a task.

Here are some of the recommended dishes from the menu that you should try when you’re here. First up would be the most basic comfort food of Teochew food – porridge. There are 3 basic options of porridge available – Teochew Style Porridge, Sweet Potato Porridge and Five Cereal Porridge. Generally the porridges are more and nothing like enjoying it with the accompanying dishes. Among Lao Er’s highlights is the Red Stewed Platter – consisting of tender slices of duck, pork, hard-boiled egg, intestine and firm tofu. The stock from the braised items is just flavour packed.

For those who love fish, you wouldn’t want to miss out ordering the Braised Halibut. The sweet and large flaky white meat was a pure indulgence. Together with the delicate sauce with a tinge of sourness, you’ll just love it. For greens, you could order their French Beans Fried with Green Fungus and Minced Pork and if you want a little crunch to go with your meal, the Spring Roll is just perfect. Though called Spring Roll, it’s actually the five spiced meat rolls. If porridge isn’t really your thing, you can opt for the Teochew Kueh Chap and enjoy the dishes with it too.

Remember to save some space for the traditional Teochew treats. The Teochew Yam Paste is an authentic traditional dessert that has a little mushy texture but an awesome overall taste. The list goes on with other delightful favourites – Beng Kueh, Black Sesame Kueh, Mang Kuang Kuih, Ku Chai Kueh and Qi Kak Kueh.
