How can I reduce the risk of developing cervical cancer? HPV Vaccination Through vaccination, we can develop antibodies that can protect us against HPV infection. This can reduce the risk of cancer. Screening Test Regular cervical screening helps to detect changes that lead to cervical cancer. Treatment of these changes will prevent the development of cervical cancer. All women who have ever had sexual intercourse should undergo regular screening with the HPV and/or cervical cytology test.

Signs and Symptoms
Cervical cancer is cancer in the neck of the womb. It has a pre-cancerous stage (usually has no symptoms), which can be detected through cervical screening. If detected and treated early, we can prevent the development into cervical cancer .
Almost all cervical cancers are due to persistent infection with Human Papillomavirus (HPV).
HPV infection and pre-cancerous cells do not present with symptoms, thus, only detected through cervical screening. Cervical cancer present with the following symptoms Unusual vaginal bleeding after sex, between periods, after menopause.
Watery, bloody, and foul smelling vaginal discharge.
Up to 90% women will have acquired this infection, but we are usually able to recover from this infection. However, the persistent infection can lead to changes in the cervical cells to pre-cancerous cells, which, if left untreated, can transform into cancer. HPV infection is acquired through genital contact.
Pain at the lower back or lower abdomen /pelvis.
Pelvic pain or discomfort during sexual intercourse.
There are 12 high-risk HPV subtypes (NCI classified), which are associated with the development of cervical cancer.
Pain while urinating, needing to urinate more often.
How does it happen? The Cervical Screening Test can detect HPV, even before cell changes occur The Pap Smear Test detected cell changes after they occurred.
Uninfected HPV Infection
HPV vaccube prior to sexual activity protects against the types of HPV that cause most cervical cancers.
For most people, their immune system will clear the infection with no harm caused.
Low grade abnormality
High grade abnormality
