Welcome New Fellows
Dame Lynne Brindley: 7 years as Master
For the first time in the College’s history, this year we said farewell to a Master during a period of national lockdown. Dame Lynne Brindley’s seven-year tenure came to its end when very few members of College were able to be in central Oxford. Apart from a sociallydistanced exchange with a few Fellows and staff members when packing up the Lodgings, there were no opportunities for the Pembroke community to celebrate Lynne and Tim’s great contribution to the College in person. Instead, Lynne filmed a video message (see page 3) which was sent to students, alumni and staff. Members of the community contributed messages of thanks to a card for Lynne, which turned into a book as the tributes poured in! A small sample are included here as an indication of the deep and lasting impact that Lynne and Tim have had on so many individuals, as well as on the College community as a whole. When circumstances allow we plan to celebrate Dame Lynne’s Mastership in College with her and Tim as our honoured guests. In the meantime, we are delighted that Lynne has accepted the offer of an Honorary Fellowship and will maintain her connection to the College. Her portrait is now on display in the College Hall (see opposite). Thank you so much for making Pembroke such a wonderful place to be a graduate student! The MCR has been a highlight of my time at Oxford and I thank you sincerely for your dedication to making college such a welcoming and inspiring place. Ariana Zlioba, Graduate Student

Many thanks indeed, Lynne, for being such a magisterial Master, always offering wit and warmth and wise guidance, always in a spirit of calmness and kindness: your steadying presence will be much missed. Andy Orchard, Rawlinson and Bosworth Professor of Anglo-Saxon, and Fellow
Although my time at Pembroke has been short, it has been very special to me. This is a beautiful and vibrant college. Thank you for your graceful stewardship, helping to make Pembroke the wonderful place that it is. Chris Foster, Junior Research Fellow

We are enormously grateful to Lynne for all that she has done for Pembroke. She has galvanised our academic ambition and challenged us to do better. She has taken time to get to know all members of the community and to care about each individual. She has led from the front in living our values of collaboration and adaptability. The last few months of her tenure threw up their own difficulties, but Lynne led us with sensitivity and wisdom through unprecedented times, and she hands over a vibrant and optimistic College to her successor. We are all indebted to her. Professor Owen Darbishire, Sue Cormack Fellow in Management, and Vicegerent 2018-20
