Scalability is the most essential aspect of a successful hydrogen economy. With this in mind, it must be future-proofed.

As the UK Government released its criterion for the hydrogen business model and net zero hydrogen funding allocation, the use of digitalisation to meet 10 GW of hydrogen by 2030 is essential.

In this issue, Hydrogen Industry Leaders brings you the general objectives of the funding round, the proposed weightings, considerations, and outcomes involved in improving your hydrogen bid. We also hear from ABB, and the crucial role digital twins can play in sharing best practices, cutting costs, and creating a breeding ground for innovation.

In our exclusive monthly podcast, we spoke to Paul Loustalan, Partner at Reddie and Grose, about the role of intellectual property and how it can be used to track the direction the hydrogen sector is taking in production, storage, and distribution.

CRITICAL TECHNOLOGIES PROVIDING STRONG INNOVATION SUPPORT FOR CRITICAL TECHNOLOGIES TO REACH COMMERCIALISATION

As the IEA examines the full spectrum of energy issues, including renewable technologies, electricity markets, energy efficiency, access to energy and more, what were the main findings and recommendations?

Through its work, the IEA advocates policies that will enhance the reliability, affordability, and sustainability of energy in its 30 member countries, eight association countries and beyond.

The 223-page report explored the varying issues affecting the hydrogen economy for its members, which includes G7 countries such as the UK, US, and France. Topics ranged f rom expanding the reach of hydrogen, the need to scale up production and how low-carbon hydrogen can become competitive within the next decade.

The report began by explaining that despite hydrogen supplies becoming cleaner, it is happening at a slow rate.

Expanding on this, it explained: “Global capacity of electrolysers doubled over the last five years to reach just over 300 MW by mid-2021. Around 350 projects currently under development could bring global capacity up to 54 GW by 2030. Another 40 projects accounting for more than 35 GW of capacity are in early stages of development.”

“If all those projects are realised, global hydrogen supply from electrolysers could reach more than 8 Mt by 2030. While significant, this is still well below the 80 Mt required by that year in the pathway to net zero CO2 emissions by 2050 set out in the IEA Roadmap for the Global Energy Sector.”

Low-carbon hydrogen can become competitive within a decade Making hydrogen competitive in the market is a key enabler in creating a viable energy transition method. The report explained the importance of making hydrogen competitive by 2030 and how achievable this is.

The IEA discussed that the key barrier for low-carbon hydrogen is the cost gap with hydrogen from unabated fossil fuels. “At present, producing hydrogen from fossil fuels is the cheapest option in most parts of the world. Depending on regional gas prices, the levelized cost of hydrogen production from natural gas ranges from USD 0.5 to USD 1.7 per kg.”

Using CCUS technologies to reduce the CO2 emissions f rom hydrogen production increases the levelized cost of production to around USD 1 to USD 2 per kg.

Using renewable electricity to produce hydrogen costs USD 3 to USD 8 per kg.

There is significant scope for cutting production costs through technological innovation and increased deployment.

The potential is reflected in the IEA’s Net Zero Emissions by 2050 Scenario (NZE Scenario), in which “hydrogen from renewables falls to as low as USD 1.3 per kg by 2030 in regions with excellent renewable resources (range USD 1.3-3.5 per kg), comparable with the cost of hydrogen from natural gas with CCUS.”

In the longer term, hydrogen costs from renewable electricity fall as low as USD 1 per kg (range USD 1.0-3.0 per kg) in the NZE Scenario, making hydrogen from solar PV cost-competitive with hydrogen from natural gas even without CCUS in several regions.

Before the IEA gave their policy recommendations, they explored the notion that meeting climate pledges requires faster and more decisive action, and that stronger international cooperation is a crucial lever for success.

IEA policy recommendations Five of the core recommendations included the need to develop strategies and roadmaps on the role of hydrogen in energy systems, create incentives for using low-carbon hydrogen to displace unabated fossil fuels and mobilise investment in production, infrastructure, and factors.

It then moved on to establish appropriate certif ication, standardisation and regulation regimes and provide strong innovation support to ensure critical technology development.

Demand creation is lagging what is needed to help put the world on track to reach net zero emissions by 2030. It is critical to increase concrete measures to tap into hydrogen’s full potential as a clean energy vector.

However, without stronger policy action, this process will not happen at the necessary pace to meet climate goals.

The IEA rounded up: “Providing tailormade support to selected shovel-ready flagship projects can kick-start the scaling up of low-carbon hydrogen and the development of infrastructure to connect supply sources to demand centres and manufacturing capacities from which later projects can benefit.”

Exploring the recommendations further, the IEA stipulated the “National hydrogen strategies and roadmaps with concrete targets for deploying low-carbon production and, particularly, stimulating signif icant demand are critical to building stakeholder confidence about the potential market for low-carbon hydrogen. DECARBONISING CRYPTOCURRENCY THE GROWING NEED TO DECARBONISE DATA CENTRES THROUGH HYDROGEN

As the world has entered a new digital age, with Ai, 5G, IoT and cryptocurrency, a new climate challenge has arisen. How to reduce the emissions involved in running data centres?

Hydrogen technology is scaling up around the globe, and it is becoming clear that it has the potential to be the clean energy source we need to power data centres.

Cryptocurrency is not only a volatile market, but its impact on the planet is growing as new currencies are minted.

Ethereum uses as much energy as Switzerland each year One of the most significant contributors to this issue includes Bitcoin and Ethereum.

While there is no direct way to calculate how much energy is used for Bitcoin and cryptocurrency mining, the figure can be estimated from the network’s hashrate and the consumption by commerciallyavailable mining rigs.

The recently published Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index estimates that Bitcoin used an “estimated 85 Terawatthours (TWh) of electricity (0.38% of global electricity use) and about 218 TWh of energy (0.13% of global energy production) at the point of production—more than Belgium and Finland.”

Continuing, it was found that Ethereum was “the second-largest cryptocurrency network and is estimated to use 62.77 Terawatt-hours of electricity per year, based on energy consumption through July 9, 2022. This is comparable to the power consumption of Switzerland.”

On top of this, the average Ethereum transaction required 163 kilowatt-hours of electricity, the same amount of power that an average US household consumes in 5.51 days.

With this in mind, it is integral that data centres are decarbonised as cryptocurrencies are developed. One of the ways to do this is by using hydrogen to generate electricity through GTG technology.

It isn’t just emissions that need to be tackled in data centres, as lots of physical waste is produced each year, with mining hardware rapidly becoming obsolete compared to newer appliances.

Cryptocurrency holds a unique position in transitioning to hydrogen as an energy source.

There are distinct features of cryptocurrency that may help transition to cleaner energy sources. The report explained: “Unlike other industries, Bitcoin mining is relatively mobile.

In their quest for cheap and abundant energy sources, miners can set up new facilities quickly all over the world, including remote areas.”

In those cases, Bitcoin miners are not competing with other industries or residential users for the same resources but instead soaking up surplus energy that would otherwise have been lost or wasted.

This could prove beneficial in reducing the amount of curtailed energy currently produced by renewables as the sector aims to build more storage.

Technological advances are moving hydrogen to become a more viable clean energy source and rolling out these solutions in an ever-growing digital world.

As a result, Bitcoin miners can tap into socalled ‘stranded’ energy assets that cannot easily be put to productive use by other industries.

Interestingly, looking at hydrogen fuel cells, we have seen a flatlined number of patents over the last decade. There have been some ups and downs along the way but pretty much the same levels of patents.

This is quite unusual because if you look at the overall number of patent filings for all tech areas, they have roughly doubled in the same number of years. Even looking at EVs, they have gone up ten-fold or so over the same period.

Q | Which companies are investing in IP in the hydrogen sector?

A | We use patent filings when looking for statistics on who is filing what and how many filings have been made as a bit of a proxy for R&D spending. We presume that the companies that are investing in R&D will want to protect that through patents because they are an asset and is a good way to protect that R&D spend.

Secondly, all patent applications are put into different classifications based on the specific type of technology. That is done by the patent office, which enables us to go in and search for the patent applications that have been f iled in any particular classification.

However, if you look at who exactly is filing each technology area and broadening it to hydrogen in transport, you see companies like Toyota and other OEMs like Hyundai are there, too. Kia, Honda, Audi, and BMW are all filing chunks of cases.

We are seeing companies that have only been around since 2016 appearing in the top five patent filers.

Q | How can competitiveness between nations help accelerate the energy transitions, and what role does IP play in this?

A | That touches on something Toyota did in 2015. They opened all their fuel cell patents and applications, all of their hydrogen generation patents and patent applications to royalty-free licenses.

Anyone that wanted to use the tech could use it, develop it, and put it on the market, which is an interesting move by them.

They acknowledge this is an enormous problem, and there are different levels that must be in place before we have a commercially successful car on the road.

By opening their IP to anyone that can use it, they were trying to encourage that infrastructure to be built up.

Using those patent f ilings as a crystal ball, in the short to medium term, we are not going to see fuel cell vehicles on the road. The R&D spend really does seem to be on battery electric vehicles, but there are still patents pushing through in other parts of the sector, like hydrogen storage.

Those types of filings have trebled over the past two or three years, so there is still some money in the area.

Digitalisation is a core aspect of net zero with direct and indirect impacts. Bruno Roche, Global Head of Energy Transition at ABB, explored this notion in further detail.

Discussing the role technology can help the trajectory of hydrogen projects across the globe, Bruno split the critical issues into three core processes. They included scalability, cost saving, and sharing best practices.

Future-proofing is at the heart of scalability and getting projects right the first time will speed up the trajectory of commercially viable projects over the next decade.

Bruno explained: “The number one priority at the start of commissioning - that is tremendously important - is to think of any next generation problems that could go against the specs [of projects].”

To meet climate goals, the trajectory of projects needs to grow exponentially across multiple sectors. Focussing on these three subcategories can go a long way to achieving these objectives.

“So, this innovation breeds innovation mindset is essential, and that’s why I think it’s even more true, due to these new technologies, but particularly the scalability of projects,” Bruno continued.

Advancements in technology and scalability go hand in hand

Costs can be significantly reduced with 21st century technology

Implementing technology is vital to fully scale at the pace we need. Bruno echoed this and explained: “When we speak about scale, the call from ABB is to be exponential. The more these hydrogen projects scale up, the more relevant ABB becomes because we are a technology leader in many sectors.”

If the scalability of projects is carefully planned and well executed, then costs across the sector will likely tumble as we pass 2030 and beyond. It is genuinely where innovation begins to pay off. Saving costs for businesses and people is the winwin situation the sector strives for.

It also helps tackle perceptions of net zero, with costs being the most significant barrier for the government and taxpayers across the UK.

But I think that is what makes it so exciting. It is such an open global forum to create this ecosystem of leading companies, no matter which part or aspect you provide.

Bruno addressed this and said: “It is not only using proven technology to show how we can make it [technology at scale] work but also the significant part of the investment; cutting down costs. ABB have a proven record of cutting between 20-40 per cent of Capex in largescale investments.”

The benefit of these cost savings is a significant sum through the support of ABB. Hydrogen Industry Leaders heard: “It is not only a few per cent, it’s a significant bump, but beyond the hardware being electrification or automation, the most important innovation we are doing today is on digital twins.”

Creating digital twins enables the sector to optimise the total cost of ownership.

Considering a blend of open running is logical because we speak about large-scale innovation being tremendously important.

Adding to this, Bruno said: “So, these digital twins, in relation to energy management systems, are key to ensure project bankability and reduce costs.”

Sharing best practices through digital twins is a huge step towards success Digital twins are a fascinating aspect because there are a lot of lessons that can be learned from each hydrogen project.

But if we can keep the information digital twins collect post-project, the sector can look specif ically for where things went wrong. Moving forwards, we can share best practices and replicate what went well.

That is why such digital twins are coming to fruition more and more. A significant portion of the net zero narrative is to think about the future and plan for tomorrow.

Turning rhetoric into real-world solutions is difficult, but through digital twins, we can invest in what is coming next.

Rounding up the interview, Bruno expressed the need for digital twins and to share best practices. “So, in itself, there is this understanding of what we do for the f irst project we help for the next, and that’s very important for us that we need to be with businesses at every stage of their development and deployment”

CLEAN HYDROGEN WORLD FIRST FOR CLEAN HYDROGEN SUBSIDY IN THE UK

As the UK opens the world’s first clean hydrogen subsidy scheme, green hydrogen developers have until September 2022 to set out their plans to contribute to the 10 GW goal by 2030.

By registering ‘expressions of interest,’ the UK Government are looking to set up a CfD approach to fund an initial 1 GW of green hydrogen and a further 1 GW of blue hydrogen. This is part of a broader objective of reaching 10 GW of hydrogen power by 2030.

The process will only entail a single application process to streamline the procurement phase and cut back red tape currently holding a lot of hydrogen projects back across the world.

UK Government set on CfD style revenue support Using the CfD style, revenue will be supported by the government’s HBM with additional funding of £240m support from the NZHF. The Net Zero Hydrogen Fund has a specific objective of supporting the upfront costs of developing projects, which has held the sector back for a considerable time.

Focusing on green hydrogen, derived from renewable sources, the first stage of the application is thought to encourage businesses to focus on the energy source with the lowest form of carbon implications.

BEIS has described these innovations as ‘electrolytic.’

Speaking at a national address, Kwasi Kwarteng, Secretary of State for BEIS, explained that the government is: “awarding up to 1 GW of HBM contracts to electrolytic projects via two allocation rounds in 2023 (opening in 2022) and 2024 (opening in 2023).”

Continuing, he said: “This means we will have up to 1 GW of electrolytic hydrogen production projects in construction or operational by 2025, with up to 2 GW of production capacity overall (including CCUS-enabled hydrogen [ie, blue H2]) in construction or operational by this date.”

Projects must be commercially operational by 2025 One of the funding considerations is that the project must be commercially operational by the end of 2025. Setting these strict deadlines pushes the sector to develop technology with the ability to implement and scale at a rapid pace.

The Secretary of State said: “to align with government’s aims around hydrogen deployment by 2025 and to kickstart the market”, exceptions could be allowed for “reasons outside of the applicant’s control”.

It is essential that the central governments across the world follow the UK in stimulating growth in the hydrogen market and incentivising the private sector to scale up hydrogen production and achieve broader sustainability targets.

FUND ALLOCATION HYDROGEN BUSINESS MODEL AND NET ZERO HYDROGEN FUND ALLOCATION ROUND OPENS

As the Hydrogen Business Model and Net Zero Hydrogen Fund electrolytic allocation round opened, what are the general considerations for bidders?

The allocation fund, set out by BEIS, focuses on scaling up hydrogen projects around the UK. They set out the headline evaluation for the 2022 allocation round.

Split into six sections, the objectives include deliverability, carbon emissions and environmental factors, costs, economic benefits, market development and finally, the additionality of electricity source.

The weightings of each criterion are 35% for deliverability, 20% for costs and economic benefits, respectively. With less consideration, carbon emissions, environmental factors and market development are weighted at 10%.

With a 5% weighting is the additionality of electricity sources.

Projects must not divert low carbon energy from other users Defining the additionality of electricity source, the government describes it as whether a project’s low-carbon electricity source is met by new low-carbon generation.

Within the delivery section, the government has made clear what they expect, including “confidence that the project has commercial and technical arrangements in place with viable off-takers for most (75% or above) of their hydrogen volumes, and with a viable electricity source required to meet their hydrogen production.”

The carbon emissions and environmental factors criterion is assessed as two subcriteria. It will determine the potential offered by each project to produce lowcarbon hydrogen.

Continuing, the application guidance document highlighted that it would consider: “The CO₂e intensity of hydrogen to identify which projects use the lowest carbon and most eff icient production pathways.”

CO2e intensity will be measured per unit of hydrogen produced To do this, the government would calculate CO2e intensity per unit of hydrogen produced. Additionally, the environmental factors sub-criteria will assess the broader safety and environmental impacts and the proposed mitigation measures.

Cost is always a significant consideration for any government investment, with ROI high on the priority list.

To assess the cost criterion, the government will require projects to fill in a template as part of their submission providing information across a range of areas, including DEVEX, CAPEX, OPEX, and FuelEx. Decommissioning costs and saleable assets are also a large part of the criterion to ensure that all projects are future-proofed.

FUTURE-PROOFING AIRPORTS JACOBS: AIRPORTS MUST FUTURE-PROOF INFRASTRUCTURE FOR HYDROGEN

Jacobs has highlighted the importance of airport owners and operators planning for the delivery and storage of hydrogen now if they are to be ready to fuel hydrogenpowered aircraft by 2035.

The ‘Airports as Catalysts for Decarbonisation’ report provides a roadmap for airports to implement hydrogen, with the company informing that due to the length of time it takes to plan, design, and implement the new inf rastructure; airports must take provisions.

To help airports transition, Jacobs has intended three scenarios for the supply and storage of hydrogen. Scenario one is the delivery of liquid hydrogen directly to the airport by truck; scenario two is using a hydrogen gas pipeline with onsite liquefaction; scenario three is using electrolysis for hydrogen production onsite at the airport.

Planning For New Infrastructure Can’t Be Delayed Any Longer Hydrogen Industry Leaders spoke to Andrew Gibson, Global Solutions Director for Aviation and Ian Sutherland, Senior Project Manager – Energy Transition and Hydrogen.

Ian began by explaining that the exciting thing about using hydrogen in aviation is that “most other applications of hydrogen being considered now are looking to use liquid hydrogen, as opposed to hydrogen gas.”

Andrew revealed to Hydrogen Industry Leaders that part of the reason airport new infrastructure takes so long to plan is because: “It takes a lot of money to develop an airport. You need to prepare

for what you can do economically. You are trying to forecast the future, which is inherently complex.”

“Particularly in Europe, or most parts of the world, you are looking at existing airports.

When trying to implement changes at those airports, you have got to do so in a manner that does not bring the airport to a grinding halt.”

You will start to reconf igure and replumb your airport for hydrogen in the future. You need to think about those 20 years in advance.

It is crucial that airports plan multiple years because by then, commercial aircraft may run on various fuels, so airports need to have the infrastructure in place to supply the fuels but have the space to eventually see every aircraft use the same sustainable fuel, hydrogen for example.

The Aviation Industry Needs To Invest To Understand Hydrogen The report suggests that airports need to be thinking about the future, and with this, two things are going on – active and passive safeguarding.

Andrew explained that passive safeguarding is not doing something right now: “Just think about it, don’t build something here if that space might be needed for hydrogen, build it either side to allow space for hydrogen in the future.”

Continuing, he added: “Then there is active safeguarding, where you start to spend a bit of money by not putting space in for it

and putting in no underground tunnels for hydrogen in the future. You are saying that you are going to safeguard it and that you are so confident that you know exactly where it will be, that you will start to put some money in.”

The other part of the report is the visionary bit about how you can then make an incremental, step-by-step investment in hydrogen, so you do not try and say that hydrogen is going to happen in 20 years.

Therefore, we will make our investment in 20 years when we do not know anything about hydrogen.

Andrew added that to understand hydrogen and become more confident about it, the industry could invest in hydrogen for heating buildings, for example: “We know about hydrogen for heating buildings, and we’ve learned something about hydrogen.”

Becoming A Catalyst For Hydrogen Will Benefit The Aviation Sector Ian spoke about the benefits that airports creating the inf rastructure for hydrogen would bring: “There is no doubt that using hydrogen as a fuel is far more sustainable than using diesel or kerosene; that is just a given fact.”

“But there are other benef its, you are going to get cleaner air around the airport, which is good for the workforce. Airports are nosy anyway, but with the use of hydrogen-ground support equipment, buses, and trucks, they will be virtually silent.”

“If an airport becomes a catalyst for the use of hydrogen, then broader areas around the airport will see benef its, and people will then be using hydrogen in multiple ways.”

Ensuring that airports future-proof their infrastructure to accommodate hydrogen fuel and other sustainable fuels in the future is essential when it comes to decarbonising the aviation sector and reaching our net zero targets.

Denmark Project

France Project

Nel Hydrogen has received a $4.07m purchase order for an electrolyser system to produce green ammonia in Denmark.

The Rouen River Port in France is set to be the test bed for the trial of a new barge which will supply docked ships with highpower hydrogen fuel cells.

The Norwegian company has said that the order submitted by Skovgaard Energy Aps in Demark will contribute to the world’s first dynamic green ammonia plant.

The plant will evaluate how an ammonia sector can fluctuate operations based on renewable power input.

Additionally, it is hoped that the plant will provide insights for future large-scale powerto-X and green ammonia projects.

Senior Tender Manager at Nel Hydrogen Electrolyser, Henning Langås, said: “We are thrilled for this project, which will be an important milestone in the green transition as it showcases green hydrogen production into green ammonia directly f rom renewable sources.

“Skovgaard Energy is an exciting client, and we look forward to continuing a fruitful relationship with the company and partners.”

Project partners Améthyste, ArianeGroup, Cetim, HDF Energy, Rubis Terminal, and Sofresid engineering have collaborated to develop a multi-service power supply barge called, ELEMANTA H2.

The barge will be a first for France. Once developed, it will serve as a replicable role model for the decarbonisation of port operations and is designed to supply green electricity and hydrogen to large ships.

It will carry a high-power hydrogen fuel cell system manufactured in France by HDF Energy, and high-pressure green hydrogen storage will cover the need for autonomy during stopovers.

ELEMANTA H2 offers a carbon-f ree alternative to the diesel generator vessels that currently supply ships. The new vessel is said to reduce CO2 emissions by more than 85 per cent, and all NOx and SO2 are generated in stopovers.

Canada Project

Tasmania Project

Plug Power has announced it has been awarded a contract which could see it support a Canadian oil company in decarbonising its operations.

National Thermal Power Corporation Following the signing of an agreement, the distribution of hydrogen produced in Tasmania is set to be explored.

The contract will see a 5MW containerised PEM electrolyser delivered to Irving Oil’s Saint John, New Brunswick ref inery in Canada.

Countrywide Renewable Hydrogen is set to work with Tas Gas to look at options to supply industrial and residential customers with green hydrogen produced f rom Countrywide’s Hydrogen Tasmania Brighton Project.

Initially, it is set to be powered by the local electricity grid, and it is said that the electrolyser will enable the oil company to produce two tonnes of hydrogen per day, set to be used for refining and mobility applications.

Irving Oil intends on using the electrolyser as the start of its transition toward hydrogen production and distribution, contributing to its goal of reducing GHG emissions and developing sustainable energy solutions.

It is planned that the electrolyser will be deployed at the refinery in the third quarter of 2023, and Irving Oil’s investment in the electrolyser unit aims to make hydrogen more readily available to regional customers and to contribute to Canada’s hydrogen economy.

The companies have said that they will explore the technical and commercial requirements to supply customers with 100 per cent hydrogen and blends with natural gas.

The Hydrogen Tasmania Brighton Project plans to supply industry, gas users, public transport, and trucking with clean fuel, with production and distribution facilities set to be constructed.

It comes after the Tasmanian Government revealed its hydrogen action plan back in November 2019, which discovered that the island had the potential to produce green hydrogen for up to 15 per cent less than the mainland power grid.

Business Manager at Evides Q | Hydrogen is hailed to become cheaper than oil and gas eventually. Obviously, with the demand for water usage becoming a lot more competitive, is there a risk that water prices will become the next gas prices?

A | Never say never. Yes, If the water becomes noticeably short in supply tomorrow, you might find that the price will change significantly. It is not a globally traded commodity. It never can be because of the transport issues with it.

So, really water is always going to be priced locally, and in this country, it is always going to be cheap.

We did a study in the Netherlands for a 50 megawatt electrolyser, and we found that the cost of the water per kilogram of

hydrogen was 1/400th of the cost of the electricity for a kilogram of hydrogen.

So, I do not think that of all the things it can affect the price of a kilogram of hydrogen.

That was not a factor, and even if it was, I have talked about the environmental side of seawater desalination. In reality, the cost of creating water from seawater is probably about five times the cost of creating that water from fresh water.

But when it is still such a small percentage of the overall cost of producing hydrogen, I do not see the cost of water being an issue.

But I do see the environmental impact of using too much and the availability of it being an issue.
