I am a firm believer that innovation breeds innovation. The hydrogen industry has the perfect conditions for a clean energy revolution.

As the hydrogen sector looks to become more innovative to meet our ambitious climate goals, it is becoming apparent that we need more collaboration, incentivisation and opportunities from the market to boost hydrogen projects worldwide.

In this issue, Simon Minett, Managing Director at Challoch Energy, explains why it is essential that we include rural communities in hydrogen projects as they bring unique opportunities.

With unique opportunities come unique, innovative techniques to tackle challenges, and projects like these pose the question of how we make the hydrogen sector a breeding ground for innovation?

In the meantime, Hydrogen Industry Leaders looks at current hydrogen projects, innovations and policies shaping the hydrogen economy that will undoubtedly lead the way for the future of low carbon energy.

FUNDING HYDROGEN HOW WILL A HYDROGEN FUTU RE BE FU N DE D?

Hydrogen Industry Leaders explores the hottest topic right now: How will a hydrogen future be funded as it begins to dominate the net zero agenda?

While hydrogen projects are convincing and essential for a pathway to a net zero future, questions remain about public and private funding roles.

What is clear to the industry is that the technology is ready, the political backing is there, and large-scale projects are happening all over the globe. However, there are many challenges facing finance and market security.

Allan Baker, Global Head of Power & Project Finance at Societe Generale, explained how public investment is essential for the R&D aspect of hydrogen production.

He said: “There is plenty of R&D money for some of the newer technologies.

This includes trying to make the older electrolyser style more relevant for the industry we are heading towards.”

It is one reason we try to work closely with the government in developing the hydrogen industry model. We can see that creating a market could be a good framework for the domestic UK market.

Despite government funding, most of the money will come f rom private investment. So, building a solid business case and securing the market is essential if hydrogen follows the same trajectory as wind and solar.

Balancing the equilibrium of public/private investment is difficult Allan added to this, explaining: “The vast majority of the money is going to come from the private sector but with frameworks to support the development of the industry.”

When discussing the trajectory of hydrogen compared to other sectors such as wind and solar, Allan explained: “In many respects, the paths will join because a lot of the large-scale projects we are seeing now are also focused on producing green hydrogen. So, you’ve got those two clean energy sources merging to produce one hydrogen future.”

Despite the optimism, there are additional constraints beyond finance that are currently hampering the globalisation of hydrogen. One of those is the distribution of hydrogen across the globe.

Hydrogen has logistical obstacles preventing a globalised market As it currently stands, shipping hydrogen is extremely difficult, and despite R&D, it is a fundamental problem for the industry.

Allan built on this: “It will be a constraint on the globalisation of the industry, and the current solution is to convert to ammonia.

There is an additional cost in converting to green ammonia in capital and energy.”

Politics will play a key role in import/export trade deals The CFD model the UK proposes for hydrogen is like the one for offshore wind, and it may have the same effect in terms of driving investment in the industry.

If that model turns out to be as expected, it will give the same impetuous for hydrogen that we saw for offshore wind.

A | If there weren’t any challenges, I don’t think that we would try it. We are not here to do it easy. At this moment in time, there isn’t a global hydrogen racing series, and that is because it is hard to create innovation.

Q | Why is it essential for automobiles of all kinds to transition into hydrogen?

A | We believe that transport has a significant footprint globally in terms of cars we drive, trucks that deliver the raw materials, ships that connect the world with cargo and private and commercial planes. The industry needs to look at new technologies that are less reliant on carbon fuels.

We believe there are different solutions out there, and we want to use racing to communicate why we need to change and accelerate the advancement.

If you can create these incredibly bright minds fighting against each other, it is incredible in terms of how much they go to win. Competitiveness is a real driving force.

Not every company or utility is currently going into hydrogen, so this can be a barrier for motorsport. It is very much in the new and the developmental area, but we believe it has a fundamental role to play.

We are trying to reduce the areas of potential failure, so operating Extreme H on an Extreme E platform takes away a lot of the risk of a new championship and focuses on the tech and advancements.

What makes it so exciting is that we are going to be the first global hydrogen series, and there is a feel-good factor about that.

It has a vital role in decarbonisation and to be that focal point for the industry to evaluate and develop their tech is so essential.

Q | Do you think Extreme H will set the benchmark for hydrogen in motorsport and more widely into the public sphere?

A | There are many points to this, from the environment, equality, electrification, and entertainment. If the joy is not at the highest level, then you’re unable to

talk about how hydrogen is exciting and a viable energy source. It is also about making it slick and ‘sexy’, and we have big names involved in our championship, including Lewis Hamilton.

The point here is how we make these cars sexy and break down barriers. If it can work in the middle of Greenland, it can work in Slough or Newcastle. We are trying to give people confidence in new technologies but also break down the barrier of how this tech will work.

If it can work in the humidity of the Amazon, the altitude of the Himalayas, or the cold of Greenland, then it can work in most of the western world’s conditions.

It must be exciting, though, it has to be really good motorsport, or people won’t watch and won’t see the message.

You must stand out from the crowd with the output, and I think Extreme H will do just that. We want the fans closer to the action without needing to travel to these remote areas and becoming locusts on the environment we are trying to protect.

DISPLACING RUSSIAN GAS SCALING UP HYDROGEN IMPORTS TO PERMANENTLY DISPLACE DEMAND FOR RUSSIAN GAS

Green Hydrogen Crisis Task Force recently published a white paper and ten point action plan to permanently scale-up hydrogen imports to displace demand for Russian gas.

Developed under the oversight of Fortescue Future Industries (FFI) on behalf of the Green Hydrogen Crisis Taskforce, it represents a synthesised view of contributing companies.

RMI contributed to the analysis in this paper under contract with FFI. As Europe aims to transition away from Russian gas, green hydrogen can play a significant role. The report explained: “Green hydrogen imports of 15 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) can close 35% of the supply gap of the EU’s target to eliminate the import of Russian fossil fuels by 2030, without undermining climaterelated ambitions.”

We must not undermine climate goals in the plan Not undermining climate-related ambitions is a critical factor in this ten point action plan. While there have been calls from the UK and the Netherlands to reopen coal mines, the report states Germany still has plans to phase out coal production.

It said: “Liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals that would allow Germany to diversify its gas imports will not come on line until 2023. New LNG assets risk stranding, given gas price volatility and forecasts on rising carbon prices in the EU.” With all signs pointing to scaling up green hydrogen production, there is a supply chain poised for rapid build-out with suppliers in Australia and potential off-

takers in Germany. Additionally, the EU are ready to invest in the rapid market buildup.

Locking in demand for short-term offtake is another critical factor to assess in this process. The report highlighted this: “Industrial demand centres in Germany and the EU are ready to offtake up to 5 Mtpa of green hydrogen in the short term, with a total addressable market of up to 27 Mtpa in the long term.”

Investment risks play a massive role in developing new clean technologies, and it is crucial to guard against this as we push on with the green hydrogen agenda.

While it is urgent to stop reliance on Russian gas, it is just as important that suitable investments are made in the correct sectors.

Initial indications predict by 2030, a €150/tCO2 carbon price will be sufficient for imported green hydrogen to compete with fossil fuels, negating the need for further subsidies.

Moving quickly and strategically to build a green hydrogen trade will enable Germany and the EU to capitalise on short-term opportunities across volatile global energy markets and safeguard energy security while achieving critical decarbonisation objectives.

What are the ten points to the plan?

From a European perspective, there are ten points to having a successful green hydrogen action plan.

Firstly, orders must be required now, design standards must be implemented, and early fiscal support is needed.

The following three parts of the plan involve risk-taking, domestic corridors and demand stimulation.

The latter stages of the action plan include a global track and trace system, public support, speed and pragmatism and finally, EU citizenship.

Exploring these points in more detail, the report stated that early fiscal support would: “enable competitive prices (e.g. against LNG) and are important to break the chicken-egg problem and incentive early movers (supply and demand) to invest and buy.

The report also explored the need to stimulate demand for green hydrogen across Europe and the rest of the world.

If all goes to plan, it should decrease the H2 Global CfD mechanism over time, making it price competitive at a quicker rate.

It explained: “To further stimulate the development of demand for green hydrogen, green fuels and green products, political support in setting (additional) green quotas for public procurement, power procurement, and industries is desired.”

CRUCIAL INNOVATION EXPLORING THE CRUCIAL ROLE OF INNOVATION IN GREEN HYDROGEN

As hydrogen projects scale up across the globe, EHB has drawn up plans for five hydrogen supply corridors for Europe by 2030.

The European Hydrogen Backbone, initially founded in 2019, has drawn maps that provide insight into five corridors that could supply hydrogen across Europe by 2030.

Hydrogen will play a crucial role in Europe’s aggressive acceleration to meet 2030 climate objectives.

Europe has defined a bolder and more ambitious hydrogen target of 20 MT by 2030 in response to the RePowerEU plan to phase out Russian fossil fuel imports well before 2030.

This includes a 10 MT target for domestic EU hydrogen supply and a 10 MT target for hydrogen imports from outside the EU. These targets are strengthened by accelerated national climate ambitions as well as the accelerated development of the European hydrogen market.

Each corridor has a unique regional role in enabling the scale up of lowcost hydrogen supply Exploring the different corridors and the unique opportunities each one brings; Hydrogen Industry Leaders spoke to Alvaro Lara, from the EHB. Corridor A starts in North Africa and goes through Southern Europe, Italy, and Germany. This route has the unique opportunity of providing low-cost green hydrogen through abundant solar energy across the continent.

Alvaro expanded on this corridor’s other unique opportunities: “In terms of infrastructure barriers, there is an advantage to repurposing what is already an existing and extensive gas infrastructure, across Italy, and through Central Europe, into Germany.”

All the corridors terminate in Germany, and Central Europe as the objective of the report is to bring the excess hydrogen supply that is available in the peripheries of Europe, in non-European regions as well, towards areas where there is an undersupply.

Following a similar route, Corridor B starts in North Africa but goes through Spain and France before reaching Germany.

Alvaro added: “The availability of that lowcost hydrogen supply coming f rom the lowest cost solar production in Europe is a massive benefit of this corridor.”

Also, having all the gas storage potential available in France is advantageous. So, that corridor will also allow for the decarbonisation of all the industries across Spain, Portugal, France, and Germany.

Corridors C and D offer separate benefits through wind power, as these corridors are f rom Norway, the UK, and the Nordics, respectively.

It also opens the door for blue hydrogen to play a significant role in the hydrogen economy the EHB is setting out.

However, as Norway and the UK are not part of the EU, there may be substantial barriers to Corridor C. Hydrogen Industry Leaders were told: “Another unique element of that corridor is that most supply is from the UK and Norway, which are non-EU members.

So, then there will be a role for the EU to collaborate with the UK and Norway, in ensuring that that hydrogen is available in the future.”

The Nordic and Baltic corridor holds the most challenges as there is not a lot of gas infrastructure across these areas.

Despite this, the EHB are optimistic that there is infrastructure that can be repurposed along the Baltics, via Poland and then into Germany.

Collaboration between all nations involved may be more diff icult than expected.

Despite the buzz around COP26 being the most significant for a generation, many countries failed to come together for crucial decarbonisation goals.

Alvaro explained that for these plans to work: “there is a need for regulators and governments to provide the support, and the clarity needed for the companies to actually invest in the infrastructure.”

Finally, Corridor E provides a hydrogen pipeline from the East and South-East of Europe.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine highlights the need for an energy transition Corridor E would connect high supply potential regions such as Romania, Greece, and Ukraine, leveraging vast land availability and increased capacity factors for solar and wind.

With Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine continuing for the foreseeable future, Alvaro explained that: “There are a lot of questions marks around the operational state of the current infrastructure.

“However, there is a lot of ambition and confidence that the EU will support Ukraine to scale up its green hydrogen potential.”

Additionally, Canada has committed to providing Ukraine with green hydrogen, ensuring they are not left out of the energy transition.

RURAL OPPORTUNITY THE RURAL OPPORTUNITY FOR GREEN HYDROGEN PRODUCTION

As Challoch Energy undertook a feasibility study to investigate the potential to produce and supply green hydrogen to a rural energy system, Hydrogen Industry Leaders explores how essential it is to include rural communities at the heart of decarbonisation goals.

Supported by the Welsh Government Local Energy Market (LEM) demonstration work already ongoing in the village of South Cornelly, Challoch Energy is making the next step on the road to decarbonisation by expanding it to a fully integrated energy system. This will benefit the community by providing low carbon, low-cost energy.

The concept integrates locally produced hydrogen with a portfolio of renewables, including wind, PV, and batteries.

The feasibility study found that green hydrogen can be produced locally using power from local renewables.

Bulk storage provided with electrolysers will absorb excess electricity produced by renewables, turning it into hydrogen.

Following on, this hydrogen can be used for local transport such as farm machinery and earth moving machinery at the local quarry.

This is an exciting prospect for rural communities as decarbonising the agriculture sector is a huge challenge to overcome.

Hydrogen can also be injected into the natural gas grid, initially at a blend of up to around 20%, eventually increasing to 100%.

Challoch’s Local Energy Operating System (LEOS) will manage the whole system by optimising energy flows and providing back-office functionality.

Funding comes from a HyBRID competition launched to develop innovative research solutions to help achieve the Welsh Government’s hydrogen ambitions.

Speaking to Hydrogen Industry Leaders, Simon Minett, Managing Director at Challoch Energy, described the importance of including rural communities in the energy transition.

He said: “You can allow the community to take some ownership in the [hydrogen and renewables production] process and build that community around that sort of process.”

Continuing, Hydrogen Industry Leaders were told: “Rural areas benefit from space.

So, you can have local renewable projects that serve each specific village.”

Communities in rural areas can also encourage young professionals into the area and those already local to stay.

There is a growing concern that young people are leaving rural areas to work in the larger neighbouring cities, and the job opportunities that come from green energy could entice people to stay.

Simon added to this, explaining: “If you don’t deal with the edge of the network, then you may end up with everything being city-focused, and they directly see the benefits of these projects.”

When this happens, people in rural areas get ignored, but with rural projects like this, the industry has an opportunity to do something good for rural communities.

Each rural area has unique challenges and opportunities, which creates a foundation for innovation on a project-by-project basis.

Simon expanded on this idea and said: “We might find a new innovative piece of technology when we are trying to change a part of the inf rastructure, which then could be used in the future and become standard practice.”

Scaling up hydrogen storage in rural communities is also another essential aspect of creating a secure hydrogen economy in these areas.

Learning by doing is always the best way forward. You can imagine the problems, but until you have done it, you do not really know that they are there.

This is highly advantageous, as rural communities often have large pockets of poverty and funding restrictions from the central government.

Simon explained without hydrogen, lots of money can be lost to curtailment: “If you can’t turn some of that production into hydrogen, then you have times when you have to curtail renewable generation.”

Rounding up the interview, Simon said: “Hydrogen is a massive resource that we should not ignore. We do not need to build massive amounts of additional storage because it is already under our feet.

It is just a question of repurposing that system.”

With sufficient storage capabilities, these communities can provide bigger cities and other areas of the UK with hydrogen power, creating more financial benefits.

HYDROGEN INNOVATION THE ESSENTIAL ROLE OF INNOVATION IN HYDROGEN SAFETY

As the hydrogen sector aims to increase the levels of hydrogen that can blend into the traditional gas network, IS-Instruments’ Raman Spectrometer can assess and manage safe levels of hydrogen in gas networks.

The spectrometers use a fibre optic cable rather than a slit to allow a laser to reach its target.

The benefit of this is to save on ‘light waste,’ allowing the spectrometers to have a higher throughput/etendue than traditional instruments.

Innovative technology is the key to a hydrogen future Building on these spectrometers, ISInstruments are developing a system using hollow-core microfibres capable of taking gas Raman measurements and detecting multiple gas species within the environment.

Currently, up to 23% of hydrogen can blend in some networks. So, as the sector pushes for this to be higher, it is essential to be able to monitor concentrations securely.

William added, “We have done work to that effect already. Monitoring concentrations, making sure you can track hydrogen, methane, ethane, and even water vapour, as well.”

Continuing Hydrogen Industry Leaders told: “We can assign a multi-channel instrument, so we could have probes at different locations to see that it’s still at the right concentration further down the pipe.”

In addition to these projects, IS-Instruments are developing further innovations for fusion reactors, measuring, and monitoring the gases in the fusion process.

Speaking to Hydrogen Industry Leaders, William Brooks, Senior Scientist at ISInstruments, explained the benefits of using hollow-core microfibres for the hydrogen sector.

He said: “The advantage of using Ramen, in principle, over those other techniques, is that it is a one size fits all solution. For example, you cannot measure homonuclear diatomic molecules with other techniques.”

Monitoring the concentration of hydrogen is essential for safety As more hydrogen projects that blend hydrogen in the national grid develop, technology such as hollowcore microfibres will be essential for monitoring hydrogen safety.

GREEN HYDROGEN BOSCH TO INVEST $1.3BN IN GREEN HYDROGEN TO BECOM E I N DUSTRY LE ADE RS

In one of the most extensive commitments to a future hydrogen economy, Tech giant Bosch announced it will invest $1.3bn in hydrogen by 2025.

Making the announcement on 7 June 2022, there will be an intense investment in hydrogen fuel cells and electrolyser technology to improve the efficiency and impact green hydrogen production can have in the interest of effective climate action.

Broadening the portfolio of hydrogen projects Bosch engages in, $600m of the funding will be used to enter the hydrogen electrolyser market.

Mobile hydrogen fuel cell developments will increase the number of hydrogenpowered projects in areas that may not be connected to the central grid infrastructure. This may include festivals, motorsport and many other events that rely on diesel generators as a fuel source.

Addressing this issue, Bosch has committed to spending more than $1bn on mobile fuel cells between 2021 and 2024. Additionally, they hope to produce fuel cell stacks and components for plants to support their clients.

Bosch’s solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) energy supply systems can use renewable fuels such as green hydrogen and conventional fuels to generate electricity and heat.

Mike Mansuetti, President of Bosch North America, said, “We are all in for the hydrogen economy. Our hydrogen portfolio is expansive across multiple domains in a way no other company can match.

“This cross-domain knowledge will enable Bosch to lead in driving hydrogen as a climate-neutral solution. And we are committed to local production of hydrogen solutions in the North American region in the coming years.”

Norway Project

India Project

A Scandinavian joint venture has received $14.8m from Enova for a Norwegian hydrogen hub.

National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) has awarded the project of setting up India’s first green hydrogen fuelling station in Leh, Ladakh, to Amara Raja Power Systems.

The Hydrogen Hub is planned to be built in Kristiansand, Norway, by Everfuel and Greenstat Energy, in collaboration with industrial companies Elken and Glencore Nikkelverk.

Consisting of two phases, the construction will see an initial 20MW electrolyser capacity to produce eights tonnes of hydrogen per day. In its second phase, capacity is planned to be boosted to 60MW. According to the companies, the facility will host a hydrogen distribution centre to target the shipping sector.

Letters of Intent (Lol) for the offtake of over 8,000 tonnes of compressed hydrogen per year have been signed with companies including Holland-Norway Lines, FFS Marine and Arriva Shipping.

CEO of Everfuel, Jacob Krogsgaard, said: “We are delighted with the grant from Enova and consider it as a vote of confidence to the role Everfuel and Greenstat is playing to facilitate the green shift in Norway.”

Hoping to make India among the few countries to take the lead in the green mobility space through the plan of five hydrogen fuel cell buses, the project is one of the first initiatives by the Indian government in line with the Prime Minister’s vision of achieving net zero by 2070.

Amara Raja Power Systems was selected for this project based on its technical expertise. The project will be set up in Leh’s extreme conditions at 3600 metres above sea level, with temperatures varying between -14°Celsius to 20°Celsius.

It would be helpful for studying and deploying multiple fuelling stations across the country and serve as a precursor to large-scale green hydrogen mobility and storage projects that would come up in India as a part of the National Hydrogen Energy Mission.

South Korea project

New Zealand Project

Sunshine A South Korean chemicals manufacturer, LG Chem, has said it will establish a plant to produce 50,000 tonnes of hydrogen per year in Daesan, South Korea. Hydrogen produced will be used to clean up petrochemical production.

Focusing on ‘mission-critical’ solutions, such as green hydrogen technologies, New Zealand-based Fabrum Solutions and AFCryo have merged to become one identity. Hydrogen Industry Leaders explore how the partnership will help to encourage a decarbonised future for the country through liquid hydrogen.

The new plant is planned to produce hydrogen by converting methane through a chemical reaction under hightemperature steam for naphtha cracking.

Widely used in the petrochemical industry, naphtha cracking is a process used to produce ethylene, propylene, and butadiene. Methane is used as a fuel in the process.

LG Chem has said that using hydrogen from the new plant could reduce carbon emissions by 140,000 tonnes annually, with the company considering other hydrogen production plants in the future.

As part of the company’s strategy to increase renewable energy usage by 70 per cent by 2025, the hydrogen production plan is essential.

Head of Petrochemical Business at LG Chem, Noh Kug-lae, said: “The establishment of our hydrogen plant and CO2 circulation system is an effort to create a sustainable future for our petrochemical business by achieving carbon neutrality. Hydrogen will allow us to convert our petrochemical pyrolysis to a more sustainable low-carbon process.”

Fabrum Solutions and AFCryo already have established a presence in the hydrogen market, Fabrum with its engineering capabilities and AFCryo with its cryocooler and liquefier technologies.

The partnership aims to reflect its future vision and purpose as it seeks to spearhead a decarbonised future.

of re-skilling students, and also getting the right courses on that pipeline of students coming out that that ‘F-E’ level (further education level). They’re involved in the automotive sector, the heating sector, and also the industrial sector as well, training students. The results of that are looking very promising because it’s expanded to the HE sector and also to companies on the ground. So, we’re taking advice on the kind of skills which you’re going to have to be prepared for, for the emerging workforce.

Co-ordinator at HyCymru Q | Do you think the industry is doing enough to attract new people into the sector? If not, what do we do to encourage the younger generation into the industry?

A | I’m glad you asked me that question because it was something that I wanted to expand on in the presentation. It’s so important to get the right skill sets for the development of the hydrogen economy.

An example I can use is a pilot skills and training study, which we’re undertaking with Cardiff and Vale Further Education College here in Cardiff, and also Coleg Cambria, which is in Wrexham, in North East Wales.

What’s good there is that they approached me to say: “This hydrogen thing is taking place, what should we be doing?” In terms

What I’d say is, there’s certainly an appetite not just amongst those FE colleges, but in other FE colleges across Wales, to get those right skills and the pipeline of jobs ready for them, but also listening to the likes of Toyota, the heating industry, Wales and West Utilities who the practitioners on the ground as well, so that we’re not training 1000 students who maybe haven’t got the right skills for the emergence of the hydrogen economy. But, in the automotive sector, for example, we’re training more software engineers because it’s going more in that direction as opposed to more traditional incumbent skills, you might put it. So yeah, we’ll have a report on that within a few weeks now, which puts a platform’s ideas together.

What we’re doing as part of HyCymru, is establishing a hydrogen skills and training group, which can hopefully map things geographically across Wales, through the sectors and through the ages, and feed into Welsh Government thinkings through the overall net zero skills. It’s crucially important that we get the skills agenda right.
