EYE in the SKY:
The Creation Process
Process Journal for Project 3 by Ben Pelc

My Inspiration
My product was inspired by a subscription based home security system called Simplisafe. I loved their use of cardboard boxes for their devices, so I wanted to carry on that spirit while also changing the design to be more eye-catching and complex. I wanted to make a logo based off a previous design in high school, where I thought it looked like an iris and pupil. Some odd connection to Eye in the Sky by Alan Parsons Project brought me to this final idea for my project 3 brochure.

Image Research
Going into this project, I was well aware of the field of home security system ads. They’re boring and I wanted to add a retro spin to it. I looked at retro art styles and color palettes. Theres a saturation of warm colors like yellow or brown. As well, ads in the 70’s used natural modeling positions, which ingluenced the photoshop elements.

Building the Brochure
I started this project by working on these panels in order: 1, 6, 2, 4, 3, then finally 5. I started with working with my logo, then any word elements, and lastly with photo elements that needed editing. The 5th panel was experimental.

Software Techniques
Making half of my panels different colors in my brochure draws attention to different places. I wanted to draw attention towards points like deals or photos. I did this by measuring out half of the panel dimensions and using the rectangle tool. I then used the color scheme tool to select a color for the rectangles, being red or orange. Afterward, I turned down the opacity to 67% so the background texture still shows through. The final touch was arranging them behind the panel frame.
Properties of orange half of panels (red has same properties, but red)

Modern security has mobile accessibility, so this was a photoshop opportunity for the project. I combined two gradient layer masks making myself the center and the circuit board the background.

Logo Design
Before liquifying Source material
After liquifying
As explained on the previous page, the logo was inspired by a high school piece. The changes I made were making weak points in the shape bow out instead of in. And keeping with the 70’s spirit, a complementing color palette.

The Last Two Panels With these last two panels, I wanted to have some fun. The last page is a satisfying finish that involves the logo and what the company is about. The 5th page I was fun to experiment with, as it breaks the norm of the three prior pages. I played with the red focal box by rotating it and turning down the opacity of the logo to peek half of it into view.
