In September 2014, in the living room of a house in Prior Park, St. James, the Pehñyo Dance Centre had its first class. It was a beautiful, sunny day. The breeze whistled through the tall windows of our living room studio as I welcomed a group of three little two-yearolds to their first dance class. The joy on their faces that day made all of the months of preparation, nervousness and prayer well worth it
As the months went on, the realisation of the vision of having a dance school that trained the tiniest of dancers, to those that were at pre-professional level and taking their vocational dance exams was unfolding. Parents were amazed at what their 2 year old could learn in a dance class, and our preprofessionals were understanding the level of commitment becoming a professional dancer required (including 6:00am classes).
With time, came change We soon made our first physical move and have since made a second move to our beautiful current location in Edghill Heights, St. Thomas. The truth is that the moves have only been physical - our passion for dance, our love of our students, and our hearts to see them succeed in class and in life has not shifted - only intensified.
Through the pandemic, the studio went from its usual roll to approx 10-15 students. These faithful few showed up online each week and the PDC teachers gave of their all during our online dance program. It is a season that all of us hope to never experience again in our lifetimes. It was a very trying time for everyone in the industry Many dance studios across the globe closed their doors. By the grace of God, the Pehñyo Dance Centre is still here; and tonight we can celebrate that fact with you.
Tonight, we celebrate a Decade of Dance, we will be sharing with you elements of dances from the past mixed with new creations. We pay homage to dance greats that are gone, while celebrating the now and looking towards the next several decades of impacting lives with our art, building confidence and kindness in little souls, and inspiring each student to believe that they can achieve!
