Fantasia for Flute and Small Orchestra Transcribed from the original version for saxophone by SebastiĂŁo Vianna

FOREWORD Heitor Villa-Lobos composed the first version of Fantasia in 1948, dedicating it to the French saxophonist Marcel Mule. Initially composed in F Major for soprano saxophone and small orchestra, the piece did not at first interest Mule, who declined to premiere it. The first performance took place only in 1951 in Rio de Janeiro with Waldemar Szpilman as soloist, conducted by the composer himself.

Szpilman owned only a tenor saxophone, and since the original key offered great difficulties, a transcription was prepared one step lower for the premiere. After its publication by Southern Music Publishing Co., this 2nd version in Eb Major went on to be performed by most saxophonists. Today the Fantasia has an important place in the soprano and tenor saxophone repertoire.

This version for flute was made by the flutist and conductor Sebastião Vianna, Villa-Lobos’ assistant between 1945 and 1950. The following is included in the manuscript: "Transcription at the request of the composer." The exact date on which it was transcribed for flute remains unknown. Sebastião Vianna did not care to publish nor perform this version. After his death in 2009, the transcription was discovered during my PhD research at the School of Music of “Universidade Federal da Bahia” [Federal University of the State of Bahia], Brazil, along with copies of the composer’s autographed manuscript.

Sebastião Vianna worked from the original manuscript in F Major for his transcription. The instrumentation remained the same: soloist, strings and horn trio, the key having been raised a full step to G Major. A few changes were made in the third movement to take advantage of the flute’s capabilities: double tonguing was called for in a handful of measures, and one bar was written one octave higher than the version for saxophone, allowing the melodic line sequence to be maintained. This melodic line was broken in the original version, as it exceeded the saxophone’s range, but playing it on the flute is perfectly feasible.

The first movement, Animé, consists of two major sections with different tempi – Animé and Moins – which evoke, respectively, both European modernism and Brazilian popular music. The opening features chromatic writing found in Bartók’s music and the polyrhythm widely used by Stravinsky.

Villa-Lobos also makes interesting use of the Brazilian urban song forms of his era. A “choro” is presented in a playful atmosphere reminiscent French music. In the following Moins, we hear a melody typical of the “seresta” (serenade), given an impressionistic harmonic treatment.

The second movement, Lent, is essentially a slow song in partially strophic form, where a melody started by the viola is repeated by the soloist ending in different ways, but without a refrain.

The third movement Très Animé, is written in a-b-a' ternary form. It begins with a lively thematic element (a) in 7/4 time signature, which is presented by the double basses followed by the violas, violins and soloist. The second thematic element (b) in 4/4 time signature is inspired by Native Brazilian songs.

This is followed by a restatement of the original material (a') that leads to the conclusion of the piece.
