Paisanos Semos! for Guitar

TANIA LEON is an internationally acclaimed composer, conductor and pianist. Born in Havana, Cuba, she moved to New York City in the late i 960's. She was music director of the Dance Theatre of Harlem (i 970--1979), and has been active in musical theatre ever since, directing productions of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre and Robert Wilson, among others. She has also conducted such ensembles as the Buffalo Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, and the Juilliard Orchestra.

Commissions for works have come from Composers Forum, the Brooklyn College Conservatory of Music, the Whitney Museum, and the Lincoln Center Institute, among others. Her compositions, which range from guitar solo to orchestra, are often built out of the interplay between dynamic and contemplative sections. While her thematic material is usually atonal, she makes use of rhythmic structures found in Latin folk music, which serve as raw material to be modified into vigorous, shifting phrase lengths.

Paisanos Semos! is an homage to peasants that till the soil; its structure is conceived organically by the composer, as a sprouting seed which matures, thrives, and slowly dies. The work was premiered in June, 1986 by Ana Maria Rosado, in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
