The violin in September Canons is not only amplified but routed through two digital delays and reverb.

The devices I used to compose the piece were Deltalab Effectron and Digitech RDS 8000, the former for a 1-second delay, the latter for 2-second and 8-second delays. Any digital delay devices can be used however, as long as they are capable of looping and have sufficient repeating or echoing (feedback) to give at least two echoes of equal volume to the original signal.

The small staves above the violin staff indicate the delayed signals, the top one being the 2- and 8-second delays, the bottom the 1-second delay. In the Canon sections (letters A and D) where only the 8-second delay is used, these staves show only the first two canonic repeats emanating from the delay.

When a loop is created and is playing as background to the solo violin, as happens for example on the first page, the violin signal should be routed to a deep, resonant reverb, cathedral-like in its character, but this is up to the performer. The outputs of the delay units might need to be routed through reverb as well – it all depends on the acoustical nature of the performance space.
