The use of medicinal herbs dates back to the beginnings of the history of mankind. They were the first medicine people used and their effects were handed down from generation to generation. Due to the enormous progress in chemical-pharmaceutical research in recent decades, we now know exactly the ingredients of at least all local medicinal herbs. Today we can confirm that there is a return to using medicinal plants in their original form just as generally in medicine there is a trend towards the use of natural medicine. In line with this development we keep about 300 different medicinal herbs in stock in our pharmacy. We only use pharmacopoeia-tested products, buy the best and most recent batches and always take care that they are properly stored in a dry place. PLEASE GET IN TOUCH WITH US FOR DETAILED INFORMATION, FURTHER REQUESTS OR ORDERS. WE ARE HAPPY TO ADVISE YOU!

INTERESTING INFORMATION ABOUT SWEDISH HERBS AND SWEDISH BITTERS

INTERESTING INFORMATION

21

Today many kinds of prescriptions of different mixtures and origin can be found under the description Swedish herbs and Swedish bitters. The origins of this well-known household remedy date back to the Thirty-Years War (1618-1648). The original prescription was found in the belongings of a famous Swedish doctor after his death. Accordingly we identify a mixture of tried and tested medicinal herbs, plant compounds and natural active ingredients as Swedish bitters. The number and quantity of the individual constituent parts serve to prepare the large or small Swedish bitters in liquid form. The large Swedish bitters is to be preferred because of its concerted composition and its versatile effectiveness. To this day Swedish bitters counts as one of the tried and tested and well-known household remedies in the best sense of the word. For external purposes only it is used in compresses and for embrocations in undiluted form. It has a natural, circulationenhancing, pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory effect. In the case of internal use we recommend diluting 20 drops in the morning and the evening in some liquid or on sugar. In this way it relieves pains effectively in the region of the stomach, intestines, liver and gall bladder, activates the metabolism and kidneys and improves circulation disorders and levels of pain.

HISTORY OF THE PEER PHARMACY On 14 May 1787, the pharmacist Johann Peter Paul Peer (1758 1836) bought the house and fixtures of the municipal pharmacy that had been first established in Brixen in 1602. Thus begins the history of a family that has remained closely connected with the town up to the present time in an unbroken succession of generations that maintain the tradition of a pharmacy of which there are still only a few in the German-speaking area. We owe a wealth of excellently well-preserved objects, a very important source of history, to this unusual continuity and the happy circumstance that, in spite of the numerous reconstructions and modernisations of the pharmacy, the no longer used stock was not destroyed but kept. These are now exhibited in the pharmacy museum in the same building, a treasure trove for pharmacy-historical research. There you can find next to earlier furniture, traditional drugs and chemical supplies, jars, packets, labels, measuring and

weighing instruments as well as historical laboratory equipment, scientific investigative instruments and an extensive library. The location of the town of Brixen on the most important trading routes of old Europe was extremely beneficial for the international status of the pharmacy. If you look at the „instruments“ of generations of pharmacists, then you will see that they are always of the best quality available at that time. This holds true for the various pieces of equipment for producing medicine as also for the equipment for chemical and physical drug study. The change from the empirical-technical pharmacist skills to scientific pharmacy can be clearly seen from the highly specialised laboratory equipment that found its way, since the end of the 18th century, into the pharmacy. In addition to the

pharmacopoeia of Nuremberg and Augsburg, to those from London, Paris and Vienna as well as the various editions of the Austrian, Bavarian and Prussian dispensaries, there is a wealth of scientific reference books and magazines. Using the example of the municipal pharmacy of Brixen four hundred years of pharmacy history can be reproduced in fact not only from historical documents, but especially from physical objects.

URBAN STORIES In a small town like Brixen pharmacists always performed important social duties and responsibilities that went well beyond the exercise of their purely professional duties. Shaped by their study and years of travel far from their home town, and respected at home as distinguished citizens, they had open minds for dealing with the current problems of their time. Among the apprentices who learned the rudiments of pharmacy here, the Tyrolean pharmacist, Joseph Traunsteiner (1798 - 1850), sticks out. Already during his apprenticeship in Brixen (1815 - 1817) he began extensive study of botany that turned him into one of the top experts of Alpine flora. Two of the most beautiful local orchids still bear his name today. They are the Dactylorhíza traunsteineri and the Traunsteinéra globósa.

< The small round balls are called pills and were considered for centuries to be a tried and tested dosage form until the pills and sugar-coated tablets of our times replaced them. They were mostly of a brownish colour and bitter taste and were meant to be „ennobled“ by the finest covers of gold leaf. The gilding did not offer any therapeutic added value, but was highly regarded because only very few could afford such a luxury.

PHARMACY MUSEUM BRIXEN The Pharmacy Museum of Brixen has been open to visitors since the autumn of 2002. Its unusual exhibits relating to the production of pharmaceuticals, such as single punch tablet presses, pill rakes or suppository forms, make it a pharmacyhistorical treasure trove for both the layman and the expert. The equipment, drugs, jars and packages on display originate from daily pharmacy practice and describe the progress and change of pharmacology compared to the original inventory. In their continuity and wealth of detail they document almost without a gap more than 400 years of pharmacy history.
