in

a

speciallyconstructed tomb in Leicester Cathedral, in a service in the presence of Their Royal Highnesses the Countess of Wessex and the Duke of Gloucester,

the

Archbishop

of

Canterbury, the Lord Chancellor and other distinguished guests. The College of Arms, founded by Richard III in 1484, was represented in the procession and service by Thomas Woodcock, Garter King of Arms, and Peter O'Donoghue, York Herald. Illustrated left is an image from a College of Arms manuscript, showing an epitaph

for Richard III. It is in the hand of Thomas Hawley, Clarenceux King of Arms, a herald between 1509 and his death in 1557. The epitaph would seem to come from the original tomb of Richard in the Franciscan Priory in Leicester, erected by Henry VII. It makes reference to the latter's piety and generosity, whilst hoping that the reader will pray for Richard on account of his offences and thus lessen his punishment.

Appearances Baptism

of

Edward VI: the archives of the College of Arms include

unique

records

of the

baptism

at

Hampton Court of Edward VI on 15 October

1537.

These records were the basis of a BBC television programme, called 'A Night to Remember', broadcast on 10 January 2015, which recreated the baptism and its processions, guided by the historians Dr Lucy Worsley and Dr David Starkey. Peter O'Donoghue, York Herald, assisted in the research and appeared in the programme, both as an expert in discussions with Dr Starkey, and playing a Tudor herald in the recreated procession. Illustrated left is an image from a College of Arms manuscript

illustrating the procession to the chapel. The drawings were probably created in the 1560s and the costumes here reflect the fashions of that time rather than of the 1530s.

The English Gentleman: Peter O'Donoghue also appeared in a television programme with this title which was broadcast in Japan on BS Fuji on 22 March 2015, where he discussed the history of ideas of the gentleman.

Society of Antiquaries of London: in recognition of his many years' work on the

Dictionary of British Arms: Medieval Ordinary, which was recently completed, Thomas Woodcock, Garter King of Arms, was on 23 April awarded the Gold Medal of the society.

Lectures Sir Algar Henry Stafford Howard: Christopher Vane, Portcullis Pursuivant, spoke on this twentieth-century Garter King of Arms at the Heraldry Society's Anniversary Luncheon at the Royal Air Force Club, London on 17 February 2015.

Heraldry Society: On 18 February Clive Cheesman chaired the annual John BrookeLittle Lecture of the Heraldry Society, at the Society of Antiquaries of London. The lecture was delivered by Dr Adrian Ailes of The National Archives and was entitled "Grants of Arms by 'Private' Individuals in England and Wales c.1300-1450".

College of Arms Foundation: On 2 March 2015 in New York, David White, Somerset Herald, lectured on the subject of 'The heraldry of the Great War' to this society, which exists to support the work of the College of Arms and provide a forum for out friends in the USA. Details of the foundation can be seen here.

The History of Heralds: on 25-27 March Clive Cheesman, Richmond Herald, attended the second seminar on this subject at the University of Münster, organized

by Dr Torsten Hiltmann of that university; for details of the proceedings see here.

His attendance at this, and the previous year's instalment of the seminar, where he delivered a paper, was made possible by the White Lion Society.

Recently Recorded Pedigrees LOWES: a pedigree has been recorded which sets out three generations of descent from John Lowes of Ridley in the parish of Haltwhistle, Northumberland, who married in 1823 Mary daughter of Nicholas Parker. Their grandson John Burkill Lowes married Hester Fanny daughter of Lowes Cato Dickinson. The entry records the latter's ancestry as far back as his great grandfather George Lowes of Beltingham, Haltwhistle. A related pedigree of the CLARK-LOWES family was recorded at the same time, setting out a descent of three generations from Daniel

Nicholas Clark-Lowes, formerly Daniel Nicholas Clark. Cross-referenced to Surrey 14/248, 252. College reference: Norfolk 51/46-7.

LONG: a pedigree has been officially recorded which shows the children and grandchildren of William Ivey Long of South Carolina, USA, who married Mary Dorothy daughter of Robert Elmer Wood, and granddaughter of John Newman Shoolbred (born 1856). College reference: Surrey 32/158).
