The notion of hosting a boxing match, and undercard, in a football stadium is a very popular one in present day pugilism. And contrary to popular belief, this was the case before Eddie Hearn and Froch-Groves II happened. Some of the greatest nights in British boxing’s illustrious history were staged in the open air. It seems that almost every potentially half-decent domestic matchup gets associated with the term “stadium fight”, often with little rhyme or reason. The attraction is obvious and the rewards plentiful. The headline acts get to experience an atmosphere and occasion that they will rarely witness again. The combatants will be healthily rewarded financially as more fans can pay to watch the action live and say they were there. Undercard prospects get a chance to showcase their skills on a platform they wouldn’t normally have access to. As with anything in life the reward is always surrounded by risk. Especially in the UK. The mixed bag of a climate we put up with rules out a significant chunk of the calendar before any negotiations take place.
