Comes only in dreams That are ever more elusive Predators, imbued with feline grace And hungry for fresh meat Wait in darkened doorways Coded whispers signal the approach of the unsuspecting Hashish? Cocaine? Tattered posters of long forgotten theatrical revues . . . Cling limpet-like to crumbling edifices Anonymous faces . . .Faded and torn Are frozen in sadness The city is saturated in myth and magic It’s river writhes like an oily serpent Through a night that reverberates With heavy fatalism Along it’s quayside the pleasure boats are moored Moonlight transforms their bleached-white timbers Into levianthanic carcasses Sinews hang from skeletal masts Ghastly apparitions that creak with every ebb Of the ink-black water Adding discordant notes to the ghoulish lullaby That is only heard by the army of the damned Who haunt the Parisien night.
