Making Their Mark Your Child’s Journey to Writing What begins as scribbles will one day be your child’s expression of his thoughts and creativity. Here’s how you can help make that happen: Read to your baby every day. The spoken word is nutrition for your baby’s brain development just as milk is food for her bones. By age 1, she will have a vocabulary of about 70 words, but she may choose to use only a few.
Children’s names and photos are posted at their cubbies. Calendars and charts show schedules. Trained caregivers share stories and point out words in books. Even their art supplies are labeled. Using crayons and markers helps children develop the fine motor skills they need to write. By age 3, most children understand that pictures and writing are tools for communication.
Lead him to letters. Display his name in his room. Provide alphabet blocks and books. Sing the alphabet song. Point to words as you read to him. Help him make the connection between marks on paper and the real world. Provide writing tools. Using crayons, pencils and markers is a step toward writing words. A flattened cardboard box or paper grocery bag makes a fine canvas. Barely gripping a crayon gives way to holding a pencil between the thumb and forefinger between ages 2 and 3. Show him the importance of writing through dramatic play. Pretend the main character of the story has to write a lot. Is he a police officer, a waiter, shopkeeper, receptionist, doctor, news reporter or teacher? Model writing daily. Children love to imitate. Let him see you write. Around age 3, his scribbles will begin to look like letters. He may draw something and tell you what it is. First comes the drawing, then the name. Praise her drawing and writing efforts. Between ages 3 and 5, she will plan the picture before she draws it. She has reached a milestone! She has mastered symbolic thinking. She understands now that the marks on paper are symbols for something else – a cat or a person. Next she’ll read and write!

ebruary! The month of LOVE... but, more than that, it is Peekaboo Magazine’s 11th birthday! Eleven years of connecting amazing families across Northwest Arkansas with one another, and promoting the businesses that make it the amazing place that it is – a place with activities, restaurants and shops that rival cities five times its size. This area truly is unlike anywhere else. For example, you can have a Rogers address, be zoned for Bentonville schools, and have county utilities! (what??) We often use the term “Northwest Arkansas” to describe this unique part of the state--instead of individual city name. There really is little to no separation between the towns... or the people for that matter. In Northwest Arkansas, we don’t experience the six degrees of separation, per Kevin Bacon fame. Instead, I would wager that NWA residents have fewer than three degrees separating each of us – even with many residents relocated here from other parts of the country, and even the world! To prove my theory, all you have to do is make a new friend at a coffee shop, find them on Facebook, and then sit and stare in amazement at the number of mutual friends you already share! This area is also a growing mini-metropolis, so the opportunities that come through here are equal to living in any major city across the country. Last month we got to be a part of a new movie filmed in Northwest Arkansas (from the great minds and talent behind the Netflix movie
F.R.E.D.I). Parts of this new movie were set at Bentonville High School and, as I sat among a hundred teens (along with my own tween) and overheard snippets of conversations around me, I couldn’t believe how far removed I felt from their teenage world. The things that these high schoolers were talking about, the things they were doing and were involved in, and the overwhelming obsession with themselves, including their image on social media platforms, was all so eye-opening to me. As someone who feels very “in the know” (as much as one can feel that way, of course) in this overwhelming phase of life called parenting, I was forced to take a step back and admit that, while I know babyhood, I know toddlerhood, I know elementary age and even middle school, when it comes to the world of “teen,” life today is nothing even remotely similar to what it was in the late 90’s and early 2000’s. We started Peekaboo Magazine to give parents a voice and an opportunity to share with each other in order to connect and bond. We did this 11 years ago, when my oldest was just one year old. Now, with a daughter on the cusp of 13, I see the need, more now than ever, to bring a teen/tween version of the same concept to Northwest Arkansas. So... like a pregnancy announcement or engagement announcement, this letter from the editor is our very own impending birth announcement--only
this time, not for a baby, but a new magazine! This year, we are launching Teen Voice NWA in order to give a new medium for teens to share and connect with, and maybe even learn from, each other. We also hope Teen Voice NWA will give parents of teens a “peek” into the mind and lives of their kids. Parents of teens want to do their best, but that is becoming a much larger struggle, as the world of teens is constantly changing as quickly as the technology they are connected to evolves! Watch for more details about this new publiction coming soon.

— The Birth Story of —
Grace Maelyn Harris By: Myra McKenzie-Harris In December of 2017, my husband and I found out that I was pregnant with our second child. We had been blessed to experience a wonderful pregnancy with our first child, McKenna, and I hoped that all would go well the second time around. In the months leading up to our second daughter’s birth, it seemed as though our prayers had been answered – no high blood pressure, no gestational diabetes, no anomalies on the anatomy scan, etc. Aside from a little heartburn, and an extremely warm summer of 2018, I appeared to be coasting into motherhood for the second time with nothing noteworthy taking place – until August 27, 2018. August 27, 2018 was a Monday, and I was 39 weeks pregnant. As had been my experience during my previous pregnancy, I had been seeing my physician, Dr. Amy Sarver, weekly for several weeks. That morning, I had a routine appointment, and we discussed my labor induction scheduled for the next day. We were ready. My husband, Christopher, a university professor who travels a lot for work, was home with me in Northwest Arkansas. My mother had arrived from Louisiana the previous week to look after McKenna while I was in the hospital. Five of my closest friends and fellow members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. (Elecia, Jamie, Lindsey, Nikkela and Ronetta) had thrown me a wonderful baby 14 February 2019
shower on August 26th. My hospital bag was packed, and, on a more personal note, my hair stylist Stacy had done my hair and waxed my eye brows on August 24th. All that was left was to get a manicure and pedicure. So, about midday on August 27th, I introduced my clients to my colleague in the Walmart Legal Department who would be providing advice and counsel during my maternity leave, and I left the Sam’s Club Support Building in Bentonville heading to my manicure and pedicure appointment in Rogers. Shortly after 2pm, while at the nail salon, I started feeling some “discomfort” in my lower back, but I attributed it to the heat, my weight and sitting still – after all, I wasn’t due until Saturday and it was only Monday. Plus, at my doctor’s appointment that morning, I had measured a “tight” two centimeters. The discomfort continued, however, so, while I was waiting for my nails to dry, I decided to time the stretches of discomfort – seven to eight minutes apart. About 3:30pm, as my nail tech Yem was finishing my pedicure, I measured the slight pains again – six minutes apart. I decided I wasn’t up for participating in a conference call scheduled for an upcoming speaking engagement I had in New York in late September, so I called the coordinator and said, “Hi Camille, this is Myra. I think I am having contractions and won’t be able to join our 4:30pm call.” Camille asked me where I was, told me not to worry about the call, and asked me to keep her updated on my progress. I said I would. Yem, having heard the call, said, “Myra, pedicures have been known to quicken labor. Why didn’t you tell me you were having contractions?!” I told her not to worry about it. After all, the discomfort was
slight, my water had not broken and by this time I had been texting Dr. Sarver and was not alarmed. We finished up, and I left. I returned to my home and decided to have a truly Southern snack, cornbread and milk, and to rest for a minute. Dr. Sarver and I had been discussing a lack of food and dehydration as a possible cause for my discomfort, so I had some water, too. I mean, surely I wasn’t “in labor.” I could walk, talk and drive without too much pain. I even called a sorority sister of mine (Adrienne) to ask her to lead a meeting for me. We discussed the committee meeting agenda and member deliverables with limited interruption by my slight pain. Plus, my husband was home giving McKenna a bath. I wasn’t alone. I figured that if things got intense, I could go to the hospital, which was about five minutes from my house. Well, at about 4:30pm, things got intense. A little after 4:30pm, I felt a “pop,” and a huge wave of pain overtook me. I waddled to the bathroom to find a small trickle of liquid running down my inner thigh. Even seeing that, I wasn’t super concerned. Perhaps I was experiencing a slight lack of bladder control--it happens when you are 39 weeks pregnant. I texted Dr. Sarver to give an update and decided that if I experienced any more
pain we would go to the hospital. In less than five minutes, I got an urge to push, so I called my mother and told her I was going to the hospital. She was across town, but immediately started to make her way to me. I called for my husband and told him we needed to go to the hospital. He dressed McKenna, and attempted to help me to the car. By the time we made it to our living room, I realized I wouldn’t make it to the car. Shortly after 5pm, I said, “Call 9-1-1, the baby is crowning!” He said, “Okay!” and called. Fortunately, we live down the street from a Rogers Fire Station, and the EMTs arrived at the house in no time. They checked me out and decided we needed to get to the hospital immediately. By

5:25pm I was being whisked away on a gurney in an ambulance with Christopher and McKenna following us in the family sedan. While in the ambulance, the EMTs, led by John Fox, asked me questions, took my vitals, started an IV, and told me not to push. Within five minutes of leaving the house, I looked at John and said, “I am going to deliver this baby.” He said, “Don’t push.” I squeezed his hand and said, “She’s already here.” Sure enough, I had delivered my daughter in the ambulance with no drugs, no doctor and no real pushing. John and his colleague Mark turned their attention to the baby, checking her out and laying her on my chest. We arrived at Northwest Regional Medical Center, and I was taken to the Labor and Delivery Unit. By 5:35pm, my mother arrived to take McKenna home. When she arrived, she saw me on the hospital bed with Christopher standing by with McKenna. She beckoned for him to give her McKenna, and to move closer to me to help me with my labor. She then turned to her right and realized the baby was being weighed, measured and cleaned by the nurses. She asked firefighter Mark, “When did she have the baby?” He responded, “Five minutes ago in the ambulance.”

Dr. Amber Sills finished my delivery and announced that our baby was fine. She weighed 6 pounds and 8 ounces at birth (just like big sister McKenna had almost exactly two years before) and was perfect. Despite her very interesting arrival, she adjusted to life in the real world, amazingly. The firefighters who assisted with her delivery came to the hospital to visit us on August 28th and spent a few minutes recounting our amazing meeting and interaction. In fact, I let them post some pictures of us on their Facebook page, and that led to two television stories about my delivery. My husband and I had not predetermined a name for our baby. A few days before my delivery we had several contenders: Camryn, Claire, Charlotte, Madelyn, Christianna, Madison, etc. But, almost as if by divine intervention, on Wednesday, August 29th, I said to him, “She is simply amazing. What do you think of the name Grace?” He looked at me and immediately agreed. Thus, our second daughter is named, “Grace Maelyn Harris.” By God’s good grace, she arrived in an amazing fashion and continues to do amazingly well.

s I stare at my wedding band, I can’t help but smile. I smile because the ring is beautiful, but, more importantly, I smile because of what the ring represents: my commitment to my Danny - my husband - my childhood sweetheart. I’ve known Danny my entire life. We grew up together in a small southwestern town in Oklahoma.We grew up attending church, birthday parties, and everything in between together. Our parents were good friends and, in fact, there are even photos of us in the bathtub together. Don’t worry--it’s nothing outrageous! We were only 3 and 5 years old at the time. I think I always had a crush on Danny. In fact, some of my most vivid memories of childhood are putting together elaborate wedding ceremonies with my friends at age 9. Every time it was my turn to be the “bride”, I always insisted that the “groom” was Danny Humphrey. In 1986, I moved away from that small Oklahoma town to Northwest Arkansas. Danny and I stayed in touch through 1994. This was before the days of texting, so we wrote many, many letters. In fact, we like to joke now that we must have killed dozens and dozens of trees with all the letters we wrote! Of course, we had been practicing this for years before--one of my favorite memories of us is how we passed notes in church by writing in tiny print on Juicy Fruit gum wrappers! We tried long-distance dating, but it didn’t work out well for us. Danny decided to break my heart 20 February 2019
by mailing me the lyrics to “Every Rose Has It’s Thorn”... ouch. I still cringe when I hear that song. I recovered from my broken heart, and we remained the best of friends, until fate changed both of our courses, and we both moved on. Each of us started a new relationship, and we consequently lost touch. In fact, almost two decades went by before fate changed our course once again, this time back towards each other. As we were both picking up the pieces after going through relationship struggles and losses, we reconnected through Facebook. Our friendship was quickly rekindled and it became clear that sparks still existed; however, I was unsure of how a long distance relationship could work. After all, I was a single working mom and Danny had a busy career in Oklahoma. After a year of dating long distance, Danny made the decision to quit his job, sell his house and move to Arkansas. His house sold quickly and in May of 2013, he moved to an apartment in Bentonville. On June 7, 2013, on a later summer’s afternoon walk, Danny proposed to me at Crystal Bridges. He got down on one knee and before he could even pop the question, I screamed “Yes!” Our love story had finally come full circle. We were going to be Mr. and Mrs. Humphrey! Now, after six years of marriage, I can look back and reflect on just how amazing our journey has been. Not only did Danny change careers, sell his home, and move to another state, he also willingly
became a step-father to my two biological children who at that time were teenagers. His love for me and the kids has been courageous and unconditional. It was definitely a love worth waiting for! Almost immediately after getting married, Danny and I both felt the call to foster care and adoption. Together, we have been foster parents to 13 children -- and in our first five years of marriage, we adopted five children! That’s right! We have 7 children - ranging in age from 2 to 21-years-old! Our first six years of marriage have been an amazing adventure and I am incredibly grateful for the life lessons I have learned through this relationship: 1. I’ve learned that there is something incredibly special about having experienced the crazy years between adolescence and adulthood with the person you marry. The bond that Danny and I forged over those long years of letter writing is something that few couples ever get to experience. 2. I’ve learned that it’s okay to experience the good, the bad and the ugly of life with someone. I love that our stories are so entwined. It’s incredibly special. 3. My husband and I share many cherished friends together from our childhood days. It’s so much fun for us to talk about our old friends, and to spend time with those friends while laughing about years past. 4. I’ve learned that that sharing a hometown with my husband is fun... and practical! It makes visiting relatives and old friends that much easier. Our hometown is rich in memories from our childhood, so that’s a definite plus. (One of my favorite memories is how we passed notes in church by writing in tiny print on Juicy Fruit gum wrappers!) 5. I’ve learned that foster care and adoption is meaningful, yet exhausting work -- but there is nobody else in this world I would rather be on this crazy, unpredictable journey with.
I’m grateful for every stage of my relationship with my husband -- but I feel even more blessed that, as a married couple, we have dedicated our lives to our faith in Christ Jesus, to our family and friends, and making a positive and lasting impact on our community.

Healthy Ah, February... the month of love, adoration, affection. Dreamy, happy, romantic thoughts of blissful romance. Sigh… Also, one of the “financial sandwich” months between holy-moley-the-Christmas-bills-arecrippling-me and taxes-this-year-are-wha-?! No wonder so many of us briefly turn Catholic on Fat Tuesday, and suddenly become Irish on St. Patrick’s Day. One of my urchins had an idea on how to fix the capital calamity: lottery tickets. I explained that the chances of winning the lottery are nearly the same as getting hit by an asteroid while riding a unicorn, but the child was undeterred. He was going to hit the jackpot. Fresh with grandparent Christmas cash in hand, we sauntered down to the nearest convenience store where I (yes, I bought them, so keep the Feds to yourself!) purchased lottery tickets. During the entire process, I repeatedly told the kid that this was a bad idea, and he might as well light his money on fire rather 22 February 2019
than hand it over to the lottery authorities. Of course, you know what happened next. We won. No, not the megabajillion jackpot, but $20. And, to an eleven-year-old, $20 is about the same as $20 million, since both will get you the newest skin on Fortnite. But, seriously, the kid thought he owned the world, and was ready to buy his own crib, since he was now independently wealthy - defined by my dear friend and frequent ghost writer, Google, as “possessing enough wealth that one does not need financial support from another person and does not require income from employment.” Amen, brother Google, amen. There’s two independent thoughts at play here. First, an independence from cash, and second, independence from relying on someone else. So, if you have kids, urchins, children, spawn... their independence from cash probably ain’t gonna happen anytime soon, regardless of lottery
luck. They’re on the payroll for a couple o’ decades at, according to CBS news, the low, low price of $233,610; which is $19,007 less than a brandspankin’-new 2019 Ferrari Portofino, if that makes you feel better… or perhaps worse. But, making sure they get off the bacon buggy as soon as possible relies much more heavily on the second independence factor. That is, independence from relying on someone else. Do not follow my lead - I’ve been terrible at giving our kids independence... like, world-class Olympic podium level-awful. Helicopter parenting doesn’t even scratch the surface. Of course, being a fullon control freak with a healthy dose of Type A personality and more than a tad bit of OCD doesn’t help, but it’s not healthy for anyone. Example: if my house was a hotel, it would be 5-star. No, it’s not ginormous and full of marble and mahogany, but it is an awesome place to chill, if you are under 18 and have the last name of Lacy (and don’t try to lay claim that you are a long-lost cousin to enjoy my free concierge services – I just mailed in my 23andMe DNA tests, so blood work will be required by all who enter). Here, your every need will be fulfilled at a moment’s notice.

go and become independently healthy. Yeah, I know, easier said than done. Another fun fact - no two kids are the same. Our “baby” is extremely independent. Probably because we have three kids, and, by the time we had the third, we were so exceedingly tired that #3 was treated not unlike our Labrador. Food, check; water, check; pillow, check. Plus, as those of you with 2+ kids know, you are forced into zone coverage, so one is always free to frolic. It also may take longer than you like for some to become detached; in fact, I guarantee it. The (magnetic) force is really strong with many of them. Unfortunately, there’s bound to be difficulties and a good bit of damage once the gremlins are given independence and let go to run amok. The occasional hole in the wall (happened to us), the busted motor mounts from driving a low profile sports car 45 MPH over giant speed bumps (us, too), the “running” water in the upstairs due to leaving the window wide open during a rainstorm (yep), the 4:30am I-decided-to-take-a-walk-andnow-may-have-hypothermia-call (true that) and occasional fire truck calls (twice; long stories). So, in the end, lottery tickets are great, but sometimes independence itself is cause to celebrate.

no getting around the process of getting a human out of your body. So, why did I do this? Well, I had a lot of fear around having children, as most women do. My fear, though, was based on the fact that I was not raised by my birth mom. In fact, my sister and I were taken from her when I was six months old. I was afraid that I lacked some important gene that gives normal women that maternal instinct... that I wouldn’t be able to bond with my babies. I needed to connect so deeply with my baby that I would never want to let her go. Natural childbirth seemed like the best way to achieve that. My first child, whom I wanted to give birth to naturally, was born in a sterile hospital setting where literally everyone on staff involved was annoyed that I was attempting natural childbirth. There was even a doctor, whom I’d never seen before, that came into the room in the middle of the night and said we were doing a c-section. Nothing was wrong with my labor, by the way, and I didn’t have that c-section. I did eventually get an epidural, which was nice until it completely failed at 9 cm.

After my first baby, I obviously realized I did not lack that maternal gene, and that I could and would bond with my children, regardless of how they arrived into this world, but here’s how it went down with the second one, and the bathtub... The night that I went into labor with my second baby was a very cold day in February, and the streets were covered in snow and ice. The birth center was in Rogers, and, at the time, we lived in Fayetteville. As the contractions started, I got in the bathtub at home and ran hot water. I don’t know why the water brings so much relief, but if you are pregnant and go into labor, get in the tub until it’s time to go. I used up all the hot water, so my husband was heating water on the stove and dumping it in every few minutes. Once the contractions got more regular and closer together, he left to take our oldest to her grandparents’ house in Farmington.

That trip to drop Charlie off went a little longer than expected, and I was in a full-blown panic by the time he got back, because I knew I was near transition, if not in it.
My youngest daughter was born in a bathtub, at what I would consider a very ‘boujie’ birth center here in Northwest Arkansas. Boujie in appearance, but actually the same, or maybe even slightly less in price, than a hospital. My experience was amazing. Okay, well… it was childbirth, and there’s
We got to the car as fast as possible and started toward Rogers. Not going to lie, I was laboring so hard that we nearly turned off at Washington Regional, but we didn’t. We kept on, on the icy roads. When we got to the birth center, the staff was waiting, and they were so excited to see
us. The setup was a soft-lit room with lavender aromatherapy, with a very fancy, free-standing European-style tub with a lush bed nearby, and a Japanese toilet seat that was so amazing I’ll likely never forget it. Sadly, the Birth Center of NWA closed in December, but hopefully this type of place can come back to NWA soon. Overall, the experience could not have been better, even though I was certain at times that I could not do this, and that I was going to die. At one point, I even expressed my sympathy for cows (whom I could hear laboring from my house on quiet nights) because they had to do this without anyone by their side, assuring them that they could in fact do this. Thankfully, the very supportive staff at the birth center was confident in my childbirthing abilities. I could barely walk by the time we arrived, so one of the doulas had me put my hands on the bed in my room, and she started massaging my lower back. That was helpful, but, still, the contractions were intense, so she suggested I get in the shower. Also, nice, but holy cow! The doula had to get in with me and hold me up, because, once a contraction started, I couldn’t stand up. Next, they filled the tub with hot water and I climbed in, just like I had
done at home. The contractions were absolutely still intense, but truly so much more manageable in the water. I only labored for an hour and half. Piper was born at 8:30 that morning, and the feeling of her coming out is the most glorious thing I have ever experienced. I can’t even begin to explain it. Interestingly, the chemicals in my body and brain released after natural childbirth were so strong that I was home around noon that same day, and had a couple of close friends over to see the baby. I was up and walking around as if I had not passed a tiny human person out earlier in the morning. Insane! I’m done having babies, but, if I were having another, I would absolutely do it in a bathtub all over again. That supportive husband has turned into an excellent co-parent. We are divorced now, but still a team. I am eternally grateful to the Birth Center of NWA for allowing me to truly and fully experience natural childbirth, though. These two girls, who are 9 and 3 now, are uniquely and perfectly mine. I am so proud to be their mom, and that I got to be the one to welcome them into the world, and that I will be the one that helps them navigate through it.

By Meagan Ruffing So, what makes a good birthday party, well, actually good? What your child is into these days will most likely determine what theme you go with. With Pinterest just a few clicks away, it’s easy to find all sorts of inspirational birthday boards to get those creative juices flowing. I don’t know about you, but even when I have an idea in mind of what type of party I want to throw, I can get easily overwhelmed by all of the possibilities. With the help of some fellow mom friends, I’ve put together a list of 12 different ideas... one for every month of the year.

your little one a Cinderella party is the perfect way to incorporate all of the fun, while staying inside where it’s warm. Help your daughter find less-thanperfect clothes around the house so she can dress up in ‘rags’ alongside her friends who will also be wearing similar things. Since this is a Cinderella party, each girl will put on a costume dress and have their hair done. Set up a walkway in one of your hallways, complete with a red carpet (or a long piece of red fabric). Once each girl has had a chance to walk the red carpet feeling all fancy, help them decorate their glass slippers (flip-flops) to take home with them instead of a goody bag.
February makes me think of Valentine’s
Day which makes me think of baking. Why not throw your birthday child an apron party? You can find plain aprons online, as well as fabric paint and embellishments. Each birthday attendee can decorate their apron and then decorate their own cupcake.

Local mom friend Ashley Williams threw her daughter, Lola, one of the neatest art parties I’ve ever seen. She took plastic paint palettes, stuck a cupcake on each one, and used the paint holders as topping holders. She also picked up a small canvas for each child, and had them tape off different parts of their project to allow for an abstract-looking painting. This birthday idea is perfect for the art lover in your family.

April What better time to throw a golfthemed party than during the month of April, when the Masters is going on? Mandy Whannell threw her son a Hole-in-One golfing party and served Masters-themed food like egg sandwiches, chips, green jacket grapes, and cookies that looked like golf balls. She and her husband turned their garage into a mini golf course, with a place for each child to try out their golf swing on any of the four holes.

party said that when she approached her local fire department about hosting her son’s birthday, they welcomed the idea. Be sure to check with your local fire department before making plans, but it sounds like such a neat idea that it is worth looking into. Mandy says that the fire department had set up an area where their jackets, helmets, and hoses were lined up for the kids to take pictures in front of. She ordered a cake and plopped a fire truck right on top to go with the theme. “The kids loved climbing through firetrucks, spraying hoses, and sliding down the fire pole,” says Mandy.

June is the perfect
time to cool off with a waterslide party in your backyard. Check out a local rental place for your one-stop-shop on where to find the perfect inflatable for your birthday child. It’s fun, easy, and a great way to incorporate water and lots of laughs.
July What could be better than a party under
the stars? An overnight campout would be the perfect birthday party for an older child. Set up a few tents outside, and spend the night roasting hot dogs, making s’mores and going on a scavenger hunt.
August A ‘wet and wild’ birthday party
decked out with cowboy hats and water guns sounds like a great way to end the summer with a bang while celebrating your child. Keep with the western theme and fill tin pails up with cowboyinspired treats, like pigs in a blanket and trail mix. Play ‘pin the mustache on the cowboy’ and send your child’s friends home with lasso-inspired red Twizzlers treats.

receiving them, an Operation Christmas Child Box party is a neat way to do that. Each person brings items for the shoeboxes instead of gifts for the birthday child. Make it fun by having a contest to see who can assemble their shoebox the fastest. Once all of the boxes are put together, let the kids sort their items and start packing! Boxes usually get mailed out in November, so doing this in October would give you a head start.
November What kid doesn’t like doing
their own experiments? Throw your child a mad scientist birthday party by turning your garage into a laboratory with science-inspired decorations and a fog machine. Put together a couple of simple recipes for each child to do a hands-on experiment that will leave them ‘ooh-ing and ahh-ing’ over the wonder of it all. Slime is always a popular go-to, as well as anything that expands and shoots out of a bottle. Get those creative juices flowing!
December It’s usually cold this month,
so staying somewhere indoors, like at a movie theatre that has an arcade, would be a great way to celebrate your child’s birthday. Call your local theatre and see if they offer some sort of birthday package. This would be a neat idea for a 10-year-old who wants to invite two or three friends. PEA RIDGE SCHOOL TEACHER, NURSE AND COACH
“Pray for Kennedy,” her father’s Facebook post began. “The school just called. She stood up from her chair to go to a different class and then fell to the floor. She had no pulse and stopped breathing…”
Fourteen-year-old Kennedy Allison’s heart had stopped. A cheerleader at Pea Ridge High School, Kennedy had no prior signs or symptoms of heart disease or any other life-threating illness. Now she was turning blue, her brain – and all other vital organs – deprived of oxygen. But thanks to the fast action of her teacher, a school nurse and a coach, Kennedy’s life was saved, and she is expected to have no long-term damage from her sudden cardiac arrest. Her father, Keith Allison, says he doesn’t believe in coincidences and that God had all the right people lined up to save Kennedy. The school nurse said it was surreal that it went so smoothly. A doctor and paramedic confirm that everyone’s fast action – and the AED (automated external defibrillator) at the school – saved Kennedy’s life. 30 February 2019
When Kennedy fell to the floor, her teacher, Connie Trotter, took fast action by having a student run to the school nurse’s office as the nurse was being notified by radio. School Nurse LaRay Thetford took off running to the room. “At first, all I knew was that a ‘child was down.’ But when I got there, I realized I knew her,” Thetford said. “Kennedy babysits my grandbabies, so I was saying prayers under my breath that she would be okay.” LaRay accessed Kennedy quickly, determining that her heart had stopped and she was no longer breathing. She immediately began CPR, called 9-1-1, and got Coach John King to bring the AED. Coach King – who is also the school’s health teacher and co-teaches CPR with Nurse Thetford – joined her as they tag-teamed performing CPR on Kennedy. “As we were doing CPR, there was no sign of life,” LaRay said. “I put the AED pads on her chest and
it walked us through what to do. I’ve had so much training, but it’s very different when you have to use that training in a real-life situation like this. I had a peace come over me, because it was telling me exactly what to do.” Pea Ridge’s EMS arrived at the scene in less than two minutes, in part because someone had called the station directly even before 9-1-1 was called. Lead Paramedic LaRon Edwards and three EMTs Jack Wassman, Riley Heasley and Ryan Walker, were there.
“When I walked into the classroom, she was lying lifeless on the floor – no color, eyes fixed,” Edwards said. “They had the AED hooked on her. It was analyzing, and shock was advised. After the shock, I started CPR again, did one round and she gasped for breath. She had a good, pounding pulse. I immediately began to bag (oxygenate) her. My main focus was to keep her breathing. a lot of people there and everyone on the scene did an excellent job. I take my hat off to them. They were very helpful even after I took over the scene.” “Our EMS guy was awesome,” Keith said. “He knew what he doing and was relieved, but worried. He told me that the Pea Ridge School couldn’t have handled it any better than they did.” Her mom, Jennifer, arrived as they were putting Kennedy in the ambulance. “I let her mom get in the back of the ambulance with us,” Edwards said. “This resonated with me because I have a son who is 16. I was intubating Kennedy while trying to encourage her mother and get Kennedy’s medical history.” Edwards works as a full-time paramedic/firefighter for the Bentonville Fire Department and part-time for the City of Pea Ridge, where he was that day. He also is a CPR instructor. “Most people just don’t know how important knowing CPR is,” Edwards said, “but it’s the basics that keep people alive. Kennedy surviving without any long-term damage is the direct result of them doing great CPR.” After stabilizing transported Medical where the ( E D )

and began to evaluate her and get information from us,” Keith explained. “They treated us really well, and brought us cookies and water. And when the medic was getting information from us, he asked if he could pray with us. We were just sitting there trying to take it all in.” “I was created to serve, and that’s what it’s all about,” Edwards said. “I remember a song my grandma used to sing to me that went: ‘If I can help one somebody, my living won’t be in vain.’ And that’s what I try to live by.” In addition to teaching CPR and working as a paramedic and firefighter for Bentonville and Pea Ridge, Edwards also works part-time in the Northwest Medical Center-Bentonville Emergency Department, so he was familiar with what was happening and was able to both educate and comfort the family. The Bentonville ED staff made sure Kennedy was stable for the transfer to Arkansas Children’s Hospital. They also did a CT scan of her brain, which was clear, and blood work, which was normal. “They did a fantastic job,” Keith said. Arkansas Children’s Hospital’s Angel 1 EMS unit was already in route from Little Rock and was diverted to Bentonville, as Kennedy was the more critical patient. “There’s no such thing as coincidence… God had his hand in everything,” Keith says. After further evaluation at Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock, it was determined that Kennedy suffered ventricular fibrillation (V-fib)

– a heart rhythm problem that occurs when the heart beats with rapid, erratic electrical impulses. Since this causes the pumping chambers of the heart (the ventricles) to quiver uselessly, instead of pumping blood, V-fib causes the blood pressure to plummet, cutting off blood supply to vital organs, and causing the person to collapse within seconds. It is the most frequent cause of sudden cardiac death, which is what Kennedy experienced. Only 17 percent of people experiencing sudden cardiac death outside a hospital setting will survive.
said. “Even though Kennedy wasn’t responding initially, the CPR they were doing helped to oxygenate her brain. Without a doubt, without that CPR, there would have been a different outcome. This helped Kennedy survive without any permanent damage. But, without the AED onsite, she probably wouldn’t have survived at all.” Kennedy’s father knows how fortunate they are.
“The fact that they were trained and ready, and so efficient… it’s no accident that Kennedy’s alive and healthy,” Keith said. “And had it happened anywhere but the school – where they had an AED and were trained and confident and didn’t panic – we may not have had the same result. God used them all to save her. When you see the sequence of events, you have no doubt.”
Dr. Joe Olivi, Director of Trauma Services for Northwest Health, says everyone appears to have taken all the right actions.
“Please continue to pray for her,” Keith said. “She’s got the smile and personality that light up the room.”

This year, Americans will spend approximately $2 billion on candy gifts for the special Valentines in their lives. That’s good news for the chocolate industry, but it’s a whole lot of sugar. If you’re looking for a non-traditional Valentine gift for someone you love, consider giving the gift of a healthier heart. “Every year, heart disease claims the lives of half a million men and women in the United States alone – husbands and wives, moms and dads, with loved ones left behind wondering if the loss could have been prevented. Many times, it could have been,” said Dr. Ashu Dhanjal, board-certified noninvasive cardiologist. While we’ve made much progress in diagnosing, preventing and treating heart disease over the past three decades, it is still the leading cause of death by far – responsible for more deaths than all forms of cancer combined. The greatest accomplishment in this area has almost certainly been the acknowledgement that women are at equal risk to men for heart disease, while their symptoms may be significantly different. In the Know: Downtown Siloam Springs is alive with new business, and a colorful history which creates a perfect canvas for artistry. The opportunity for art is being embraced by a grassroots committee at their common Wednesday night gathering place, Creekside Taproom. They are collectively known as the Siloam Springs Center for the Arts, which originated last August, with three people who decided to produce a show at a local venue. The problem was that there was not a local theater for the community. Fortunately, that first meeting took place in the community, and the committee immediately began to grow. By the third meeting, there were nine members, and the Siloam Springs Center for the Arts was the official name of their nomadic endeavors of art. SSCA has already accomplished the production of their inaugural performance, It’s A Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play by Joe Landry, as a dinner theater in the banquet room of a local restaurant, 28 Springs. The community was so hungry for theater that the show sold out two weeks before the performance. “We could have sold more seats, but we had no more seats to sell!” according to an organizer. The committee scrambled to add an encore performance the following day, and it came to fruition with the generous donation by the City of Siloam Springs to allow the use of the Community Building. “It was a different experience. Since we do not have a brick and mortar home, we constructed a stage and set the day of the show. We took it down that night and packed it into a borrowed box van until the next morning. Then we built the set again for the next show.” The encore performance drew a bigger crowd than the sold-out dinner theater, and
included special guests, such as single parents and veterans, that had received free tickets to attend. Stage performance is not the only art form SSCA supports. Music Circle at Creekside Taproom is being held on alternating Sundays. Events being planned include a photo/essay contest for students 8-19, a home brewers’ event in coordination with Ivory Bill Brewing, as well as a theatrical murdermystery performance at Riverside Entertainment. A big project in the works is “Shakespeare in the Park” during summer solstice. “That is just in the first half of the year! We don’t even have a building yet. Imagine what we can do when we have a home,” the spokesman for the committee said. The Siloam Springs Center for the Arts’ current goal is to secure a permanent home. This begins with purchasing and restoring the historic M.E. Gaither Mill, which is located at 201 North College in Siloam Springs. Once renovated, the plans include a space dedicated to creating, sharing, and growing the arts in Siloam Springs and the surrounding area. Architectural drafts for the proposed renovation include the original wall and clerk’s window from the Mill to be repurposed as the box office and gift store. The entrance will open to a 58’ x 25’ gallery featuring local artisan works. The theater will seat approximately 130 patrons on the ground level, and 50 in the balcony to view performances on a 40’ x 15’ stage. “We will be able to host events for adults and children throughout the year. There will be art showings in our gallery with new featured artists on a regular basis, a drama camp for kids, concerts to highlight local talents, music and oratory series, and more.”
