Venues All daytime activities, including the Members Lounge and Trade Show of the 2014 JCI European Conference will take place at the JCI Village, which is a conglomeration of three five star hotels in St. Julian’s located with in a two minutes walking distance of each other. The Opening Ceremony and Welcome Party will take place at the Capital City of Valletta at the 16th Century Knights’ Building — the Mediterranean Conference Centre (MCC).

Registration Delegates are strongly encouraged to register online before arriving in St. Julian’s. Upon arrival, registered delegates should pick up their conference badges from the Headquarters Hotel, Radisson Blu Resort. The registration desk will be open from Tuesday, June 10 to Saturday, June 14.

Only delegates who have registered will be allowed to participate in conference events. Admission will be restricted to delegates wearing Conference badges and holding event entry tickets, when necessary.

Travel Visa

to an hour and a half as delegates would need to make a stop at Valletta Terminus before taking another bus to St. Julian’s.

• Take bus 73 from the airport bus stop Mitjar to Valletta Terminus.

• From Valletta Terminus, Take Bus 12, 13 or 22 to St. Julian’s.

A one-day bus ticket costs €1.50 and can be used for an unlimited number of trips during that day.

The Conference Organizing Committee highly recommends the use of the airport transfer in order to avoid any delays and inconveniences.

Non-European Union Member States (third-country nationals) who seek to enter Malta, are obliged to apply for a visa at Malta’s diplomatic missions and consular posts, as follows: www.mhas.gov.mt Letters of invitation will be issued by the Conference Organizing Committee only after registration payment has been received.

Transportation Malta has only one International Airport (www.maltairport.com), which is located in Luqa, approximately 11 km away from the JCI Village.

For a comfortable and fast transportation to the JCI Village in St. Julian’s, delegates may book their airport shuttle transfers via our 2014 JCI European Conference Booking Platform: www.onsitemalta.com/jci/registration-check.php Transportation takes around 20 minutes and various price packages are being offered to delegates.

Public Transport is also available from the airport to St. Julian’s by bus. This will take approximately an hour

About St. Julian’s, Malta Malta lies virtually at the center of the Mediterranean, 93 km south of Sicily and 288 km north of Africa with a total population of more than 400,000 inhabitants occupying an area of 316 km2. Megaliths, medieval dungeons and Calypso’s Cave — The Maltese Islands are positively mythic. The narrow meandering streets of their towns and villages (www.visitmalta.com) lead to the main square, which is invariably dominated by the huge baroque church. As the countryside is dotted with medieval towers, wayside chapels and the oldest known human structures in the world, the Islands have rightly been described as an open-air museum.

St. Julian’s, or San Giljan in Maltese, is a popular town bustling with tourists, especially during the summer months. It is also a well sought after destination by the Maltese. Up until the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries St Julian’s was a very peaceful coastal town known for its Latin architecture, such as the Spinola Palace, and beautiful greenery surrounding it. Spinola bay was characterized by its fishermen and farmers dwelling in the countryside. Now, it is known for tourism-oriented businesses, such as hotels, restaurants and nightclubs, which are centered mainly in an area known as Paceville.

Maltese and English are the official languages of the Maltese Islands and therefore it is very easy to communicate in English with most of the locals.

A considerable percentage of locals are also fluent in speaking Italian and a little bit of French.

Valletta, Malta After the Great Siege of 1565, knights set about an ambitious project, the building of Valletta, the so-called ‘city built by gentlemen for gentlemen’. Pope Pius IV sent his foremost engineer, Francesco Laparelli, to build the city both as a fortress to defend Christendom and as a cultural masterpiece. A unique example of the Baroque, Valletta has been designated a World Heritage City.

In its day, Valletta was a fine example of modern city planning. Designed on a grid system, now common in the United States, the city was carefully planned to accommodate water and sanitation and to allow for the circulation of air. Most towns and cities evolved over centuries, but Valletta, in contrast, was one of the first European cities to be constructed on an entirely new site.

Mdina and Rabat The history of Mdina traces back more than 4000 years.

According to tradition, it was here that in 60 A.D. that the Apostle St. Paul is said to have lived after being shipwrecked on the islands. Furthermore, it is said that St. Paul resided inside the grotto know as Fuori le Mura (outside the city walls) now known as St. Paul’s Grotto in Rabat. Lamp lit by night and referred to as “the silent city”, Mdina is fascinating to visit for its timeless atmosphere as well as its cultural and religious treasures. Like nearby Mdina, Rabat played a major role in Malta’s past and is a prime source of its cultural heritage.

This large provincial township was part of the Roman city of Melita, with the sites and archaeological relics found testifying to the town’s importance during the Roman period.

The Three Cities Their harbor inlets have been in use since Phoenician times: the docks always providing a living for local people, but also leaving them vulnerable when Malta’s rulers were at war. As the first home to the Knights of St. John, the Three Cities’ palaces, churches, forts and bastions are far older than Valletta’s.

The local communities here celebrate holy days and festas like nowhere else on the islands. The most spectacular events are the Easter processions when statues of the “Risen Christ” are carried at a run through crowded streets.

The Conference Organizing Committee team has partnered up with Easy School of Languages to provide English Language courses to suit your needs.

Internet Access Free Wi-Fi will be provided to all delegates in the three hotels forming the Conference Center — the JCI Village. A number of public spaces, cafes and restaurants also provide free access to Wi-Fi to their patrons.

Weather Malta’s weather is generally warm throughout the year compared to northern European Countries.

In June, the temperature can rise up to 30ºC, but in the evening it can be a bit chilly as temperature may fall to 13ºC. Rain is uncommon at this time of year although there may be rare circumstances of brief showers.

It is recommended that delegates bring light summer clothes for the day and long sleeved, light jackets for the evenings.

Time Zone The Time Zone for Malta is: GMT/UTC +1 hour

Attire in the town of St. Julian’s Being a tourist town with lots of clubs, restaurants and by the sea, people tend to wear casual and beach attire during the day and dress up for the evening with smart-casual wear.

Tourism Resources Even though Malta is a small country, it is bustling with events, activities, shopping, beaches and cultural places to visit all year round and therefore you will find it very enjoyable to plan your stay after the Conference. Health Check with your local health care professional about which vaccinations to receive before visiting Malta. Make sure you are up-to-date on routine vaccines before every trip.

These vaccines include: • Measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine • Diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis vaccine • Varicella (chickenpox) vaccine • Polio vaccine • Flu shot Holders of a European Health Insurance Card (E111) are eligible for free health care in Malta. The participating countries in these program are: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom.

Electricity The electrical supply is 230 volts /- 10%. The frequency of the supply is 50 hertz. The three-pin rectangular plug system is used, as in Britain. Adapters are very easy to find and partly provided by the hotels.

Currency The euro (€) is the currency used in Malta. One euro consists of 100 euro cents. Banks, post offices and foreign exchange counters will swap currency. Many exchange offices are open on Sundays and there are a number of them located in St. Julian’s.

Credit cards are widely accepted in Malta, with Visa being the most widely accepted, followed by MasterCard.

American Express and Diners Club are not as widely accepted in Malta. Keep photocopies of all credit cards and documents in case of theft or loss. Notify your bank of your international travel plans before you leave to ensure you can use your card abroad.

Many vending machines (ticket, drink, cigarette, etc.) and shops with purchases under €10 do not accept credit card payment, so keep a reasonable supply of cash on hand to keep your travel, food and beverage options open.

Cultural Notes The Maltese culture is generally considered to be a mix of influences brought to the island of Malta by the various rulers it has seen come and go through many centuries. However, age-old traditions have travelled through generations and have allowed the Maltese to retain their roots. The predominant religion in Malta is Catholicism, which is followed by an estimated 90% of the population. Malta is a culture of opposites and therefore has a reasonable amount of authority compared to other European states. Many see Malta as being a nation of opposites and opposition. Whereas the Maltese are generally friendly and welcoming, the Mediterranean temperament comes forward in opposition of sides at many levels, but mainly in sports, politics and local band clubs. The most popular sport in Malta are without a doubt football, however there is also a competitive spirit in water polo, rugby and basketball.

Victoria and Citadella (Gozo)

The Citadel in Gozo owes its roots to the late medieval era, but the hill has been settled since Neolithic times.

For centuries, the Citadel served as a sanctuary from attack

by Barbary corsairs and Saracens. At several times during Gozo’s history, these raiders took its population into slavery.

After the Great Siege of 1565, the knights set about re-fortifying the Citadel to provide refuge and defense against further attack. Until 1637, the Gozitan population was required by law to spend their nights within the Citadel for their own safety. In later, more peaceful times, this restriction was lifted and people settled below its walls, creating the prosperous town of Rabat, now known as Victoria.

Beaches and Bays Malta has beaches for everyone, from windsurfers to sunbathers. Choose from golden sand, red sand, rocks, blue lagoons and even inland seas. Some beaches and rocky shores are off the beaten track, but worth seeking out for their seclusion. Do not miss a boat trip to Comino’s Blue Lagoon for the ultimate azure water experience. On larger beaches, you will find cafes or snack bars open during the summer season. With Malta’s climate, beach life lasts well into October. Enjoy water sports and activities like windsurfing, jet and water skiing, paragliding and fun rides. You can hire equipment from beach cafes or shops nearby.

The main coastal resorts and larger sandy beaches are in the northern part of Malta. Malta’s most popular beaches are Mellieħa Bay, Għajn Tuffieħa and Golden Bay. For smaller, quieter beaches, try those at the tip of Malta, overlooking Gozo - Paradise Bay and Armier. In Gozo, the most beautiful beach is Ramla l-Ħamra, a large beach of unusual red sand nestling by countryside. Gozo and Comino offer plenty of out-of-the-way rocky inlets with clear waters and perfect snorkelling.
