MY PEDARE


Sport at Pedare Pedare strongly believes in the benefits gained from involvement in school sport. Our sports program aims to be an educational experience that engages students in valuable learning opportunities. It extends the Physical Education program through further opportunities for students to be challenged, build friendships, set and achieve goals and interact with their peers. Sporting excellence is underpinned by an emphasis on participation. Students of all abilities are encouraged to participate in at least one of the many sports offered at Pedare.

Objectives for Sport Ensure all students: • develop positive relationships and build friendships • are provided with the opportunity to participate in a College team • feel a sense of belonging • develop life skills such as communication and leadership • experience the joys of success and be gracious in defeat • are challenged, regardless of skill level and aspirations • build self-esteem and confidence

Weekly Competitions In the Middle and Senior Schools, Girls Sport is mainly played within the SACSSGSA (South Australian Catholic Secondary Schools Girls’ Sport Association and Boys Sport within the SAAS (Sports Association for Adelaide Schools) Sports offered: • • • • • • • • •

Knockout competitions Our affiliation with SAPSASA (South Australian Primary Schools Sports Association) and SSSSA (State Secondary Schools Sports Association) allows students to participate in various Knockout competitions and statewide tournaments in a variety of sports.

Coaching

The year is highlighted by our Summer and Winter Anglican Cup against Pulteney Grammar, St Johns Grammar and Woodcroft College. Senior students participate in the winter competition in Basketball, Netball, Soccer, Football and Hockey. Middle School students participate in the summer competition in Volleyball, Tennis, Cricket, Softball and Touch Football.

Specialist Programme in Netball The Pedare Specialist Program in Netball (SPIN) allows students to develop specific netball skills whilst maintaining a focus on academic excellence. It is an integrated educational program focusing on the essential elements of Netball, building towards successful performance across all sports. The program is endorsed and supported by Netball SA through access to resources, coaching and professional development and delivered by Adelaide Thunderbirds player, Fiona Themann.

Anglican Cup

Our sporting teams/squads are coached by a combination of staff, external coaches, old scholars and parents. Coaching positions are monitored on a regular basis as we strive to provide each team with the best sporting experience possible.

Pedare students have the opportunity to play competitive Netball representing the College through the South Australian District Netball Association (SADNA) along with the opportunity for students to trial for Squad Teams in Years 6-12.


Summer Sports (Term 1/4) Athletics

In preparation for the Pedare Athletics Carnival and Interschool events, Athletics training allows students to improve in their chosen events. Pedare competes in several interschool athletics events each year, including the Secondary School Sport of South Australia (SSSSA) Athletics Carnival at Santos Stadium and Tea Tree Gully SAPSASA competition.

Swimming

In preparation for the College Swimming Carnival and Interschool events,the Pedare Swim Squad teaches students the importance of hard work and discipline, while developing their technique through a variety of training methods. Training: Fridays 7:00-8:15 am Location: State Swim, Golden Grove

Cricket

Pedare Cricket teams compete in the Sports Association of Adelaide Schools (SAAS) competition. Pedare may also enter teams in the local 6/7 SACA competition if numbers allow. Competition: Saturday morning Location: Pedare Oval and other schools Training: 6/7 Tuesday afternoon, 8/9 & Open Thursday afternoon

Boys in Years 8-12 compete in the Sport Association of Adelaide Schools competition (SAAS). Competition: Saturday morning Location: Golden Grove Recreation Centre and other schools. Training: Wednesday 3:30-4:30 (GGRC) Boys in Years 6-12 compete in the Sport Association of Adelaide Schools competition (SAAS).

Basketball (Girls)

Competition: Saturday morning Location: Set location each week. Marryatville High School or Loreto College. Training: Thursday afternoon 3:30-4:30pm

Soccer (Boys)

Training: Thursday 7:30am (Pedare Oval) Middle (7-9) and Senior (10-12) teams compete against other all-girls teams in the South Australian Catholic Secondary School Girls Sports Association (SACSSGSA)

Winter Sports (Term 2/3)

Tennis

Tennis teams compete in the Sport Association of Adelaide Schools competition (SAAS). Competition: • 6/7- Friday afternoon • 8/9 & Open- Saturday morning Location: Golden Grove Recreation Centre and other schools Training: Wednesday morning 7:15-8:15am

Competition: Saturday morning Location: Pedare Oval and other schools Training: Tuesday 3:30-4:30pm (Pedare Oval)

Year-round Sports Netball

Pedare netballers compete in the South Australian District Netball Association (SADNA). Teams are nominated in both the Summer and Winter Seasons Competition: • U/9: Saturday (Winter), Friday (Summer) • U/11:Saturday (Winter), Friday (Summer) • U/13:Tuesday (Summer and Winter) • U/15:Tuesday (Summer and Winter) • U/17:Tuesday (Summer and Winter) Location: SADNA Atlantis Drive, Golden Grove

Soccer (Girls)

Girls teams compete in the South Australian Catholic Secondary Schools Girls’ Sport Association (SACSSGSA). Competition: Saturday morning Location: St Ignatius College, Athelstone Training: Thursday 3:30-4:30 (Pedare Oval)

Volleyball (Girls)

Middle (7-9) and Senior (10-12) Volleyball teams compete against other allgirls teams in the South Australian Catholic Secondary Schools Girls’ Sport Association (SACSSGSA). Competition: Saturday morning Location: Mary Mackillop College, Training: Wednesday afternoon 3:30-4:30pm

Volleyball (Boys & Mixed)

Middle (7-9) and Senior (10-12) Pedare boys and mixed teams compete in the Sports Association for Adelaide Schools competition (SAAS). Competition: Friday afternoon Location: Golden Grove Recreation Centre and other schools. Training: Wednesday 3:30-4:30, (Golden Grove Recreation Centre)

Basketball (Mixed) Students in Years 6-7 compete in The Golden Grove Recreation Centre mid-week competition (Run by Norwood Basketball Club). These are mixed teams from Under 12s to Under 14s. Competition: • U/12- Thursday afternoon • U/14- Tuesday afternoon Location: Golden Grove Recreation Centre Training: Monday afternoon 3:30-4:30pm


Nominations

Extreme Weather Policy

Nominations are done on-line via a nomination form sent to both parents and students prior to the end of each term, in preparation for the upcoming term. Once nominations for sporting activities are confirmed, students are expected to honor the obligation and present themselves for all programmed practices and match fixtures.

Saturday Sport Where the temperature for the forthcoming SATURDAY is forecast at 38ºC on the Bureau of Meteorology’s web site at 8.00am on Friday, all extra curricular sport will be cancelled

The Sport Practice and match timetables are emailed to all students and parents at the College. They are also posted on the College website http://www.pedarecc.sa.edu.au/portal/ extra-curricular-fixtures and displayed in classrooms.

Absence Procedure Where possible, students should take personal responsibility for advance notification of absence from training or matches by contacting the team manager with an explanation. Additional notification from the parent is always appreciated but we like the students to take responsibility in the first instance.

Midweek Sport (including Friday afternoon) If the temperature for the programmed day is forecast at 38ºC on the Bureau of Meteorology’s web site at 3:00pm the day before, all extra-curricular and Knockout sport will be cancelled If the forecast temperature is less than 38ºC but conditions are considered as extreme, (e.g. high humidity, thunderstorms/lightning) the Director of Sport will authorise the cancellation of all extra-curricular and Knockout sport For mid week Primary sport If the maximum temperature in the Advertiser on Friday morning is forecast to be 35 degrees or more all games are to be cancelled for Friday afternoon.

Uniforms Sports Uniform All students are required to wear the correct uniform for the sports in which they are involved. Parents are asked to support the College in this by ensuring the appropriate uniform items have been purchased and are available and clean for each match. Attire for practices All students are to wear clothing / shoes appropriate to that sport or the College Physical Education Uniform.

Travel Travel to and from sport Students are generally expected to make their own transport arrangements. Parents’ assistance with the transport is greatly appreciated.
