STAAR TESTING The 3rd & 4th grade students will be taking the Math & Reading STAAR tests on May 9th & 10th. In order to comply with TEA guidelines and provide students with a quiet and secure testing environment, we are not allowing visitors on campus on these days. If you have a 3rd or 4th grade student, we also ask that you please try not to schedule any appointments on the days your child will be testing. Thanks for your help!

IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS FOR KINDERGARTEN ENROLLMENT The Texas Department of State Health Services has recently changed immunization requirements for Hepatitis A, Measles/Mumps/Rubella (MMR), Varicella, Tetanus/Diphtheria/Pertussis (Tdap) and Meningococcal vaccines. Students entering Kindergarten/1st grade: DTAP –4 doses (1 dose must be on/after 4th birthday) Hepatitis A - 2 doses Hepatitis B – 3 doses IPV – 4 doses MMR - 2 doses Polio – 3 doses (1 dose must be on/after 4th birthday) Varicella - 2 doses For complete immunization requirements, visit the district website or contact your campus nurse.
NEWS FROM THE CLINIC The weather is warming up, the days are longer and there's more time to be outside doing all kinds of fun things! But if you're going to be out in the sun, especially on a hot day, you need to stay safe. Let's find out how. 1. Always wear sunscreen. 2. Take frequent breaks from the sun by going indoors or moving into the shade. These steps are especially important between 10:00 in the morning and 4:00 in the afternoon, when the sun's rays are strongest. Use a sunscreen with an SPF rating of 30 or higher. Put on sunscreen 15 to 20 minutes before going out in the sun. The letters SPF stand for sun protection factor, and the number rating tells you how much longer you can stay in the sun without getting sunburned. Be sure to put sunscreen all over your body. This includes some places you might not think of, like the tops of your ears, the back of your neck, the part in your hair, your face, and the tops of your feet. You may need some help reaching the back of your body. If you want to block the sun's rays, wear clothing that you can't see your hand through. You may still get burned through more sheer fabrics. Wear a baseball cap or other fun hat to block your face from the sun. Don't forget that your eyes need protection from ultraviolet rays, too. Always wear sunglasses in the bright sun, and make sure they have a label saying that they block UV rays.
LIBRARIAN’s NOOK BOOK FAIR THANK YOU The Spring Book Fair was a big success! We raised money to buy new books for the Shadycrest library. Thank you to all who supported the book fair. An extra big thank you goes out to the volunteers who helped keep the fair running smoothly. 4th Grade Talent Show The annual 5th grade Talent Show will be held on May 27. Interested students need to watch for permission slips coming home during the 1st week of April.
P.E. SCOOP Students in grades 2-4 will be trying out for a place in the District Track Meet, which will be held Tuesday, May 17th, at The Rig. One boy and one girl from 2nd-4th grade will represent Shadycrest in the following events: 75M, 100M, 200M, 400M, and Softball Throw. There will also be an 800M run and a 400M relay for boys and girls in the 3rd and 4th grade. Students may not compete in more than one event. Best of luck to everyone! MUSIC NOTES I would like to congratulate second grade on a wonderful performance! We are continuing learning songs and reading rhythms. We will be taking what we have learned and applying them to the ukuleles and other instruments. Our 4th grade students are progressing nicely on the recorders, setting their goals on that black belt!
Washington Carver, Albert Einstein, Marie Curie, and Ellen Ochoa. Another famous gifted person is Leonardo da Vinci, who was born on April 15, 1452 in Italy. Some people say he was the most talented person to have lived, with knowledge and curiosity that spanned a wide range of fields. As an artist, he created the Mona Lisa and the Vitruvian Man among other paintings and sculptures. He studied flight and designed plans for flying machines which were impossible to make because of the limited technology in his time. He even wrote in “mirror direction” meaning the opposite direction to what is normal so you would have to use a mirror to read it. He was a brilliant mathematician – seeing a mathematical connection to almost everything. He also studied music and designed new instruments. ARRIVAL & DISMISSAL SAFETY REMINDERS Attention GT nominated Kinder, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade students and parents: Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade students who were nominated to be assessed for the GT services by September 30, 2015 will receive the results in the mail on or before April 15, 2016. Using Bibliotherapy with Gifted Students Often times, gifted students feel like they don’t belong with other students their age or that they are different in some way. Bibliotherapy, the process of having a student read a book to learn about social/emotional issues or developmental needs by identifying with a character from a book, is often used with gifted children as a way to learn that there are others who have the same feelings, concerns, or problems and that they are not alone. There are a multitude of fictional books whose main characters are gifted. However, literary nonfiction can also be used for bibliotherapy by studying famous people who are thought to be gifted such as George
For the safety of our students, parents may not park in the school parking lots or bus loop to walk in to pick up students designated as cafeteria walk up or to walk over to pick up a student designated as a car rider. When dropping your child(ren) off in the morning, make sure you are pulling ALL THE WAY UP to the end of the breezeway. This allows for more students to be dropped off at the same time, which makes the line move more quickly.
In order to assist the flow of traffic, city ordinance prohibits drivers from turning left into or out of the Shadycrest parking lot from 7:30- 8:30 a.m. and again from 2:30- 3:30 p.m. There is no staff on duty before 7:15 a.m. Do not drop students off before this time as they will be unattended.
