Student Enrollment and Facilities In 2016, the school district put forth a successful bond election. The proposals within it assumed that student enrollment for the next 8 - 10 years could be absorbed by renovating and expanding already existing schools – rather than by adding new schools. Those assumptions remain on target even though the current school year provided an unanticipated surprise. While student enrollment over the past 5 years increased, on average, by 500 students per year, Pearland ISD has almost the same number of students in 2017-18 as recorded at the end of last school year. There are a number of factors likely impacting this change. Among them are Hurricane Harvey, Texas-wide birth rate decreases affecting early elementary grades, and the diminishing amount of land within Pearland ISD boundaries available for residential developments. While Alvin ISD has a huge amount of undeveloped land within their boundaries, that is no longer the case in the much smaller geographic boundaries of Pearland ISD. Consequently, we are approaching a “build-out” situation whereby there is diminished capacity to “fit” new homes here. We anticipate growing about 1,000 students from our current enrollment of 21,600 by the 2024-25 school year. That enrollment can be accommodated by the renovations/additions now underway throughout the district. The stellar reputation of Pearland ISD generates a significant number of transfer requests from outside our district. We do allow such transfers – but only to schools with present and future room for them. Changing enrollment patterns also affect revenue and expenditure estimates for our school district, but accurate projections are far more reliant on the actions of the Texas legislature. We remain confident that renovating and expanding our current facilities, rather than building new schools, will suffice for the foreseeable future – and is a far more cost effective plan. Students Give Back Pearland ISD students spent the last few weeks of the fall semester collecting food, toys, bicycles and gift cards to donate to local organizations and families in need and helped spread cheer this holiday season. For the 10th year, Pearland Junior High East athletes collected and donated over 20 bicycles to Pearland kids. Berry Miller Junior High National Junior Honor Society raised over $3,800 for B.I.G. Love Cancer Care, a non-profit organization that provides basic necessities and other items to help pediatric cancer patients and their families feel comfortable during treatment. Some campuses participated in toy drives to brighten Christmas for area children. Dawson High School collected more than 200 toys, while Pearland Junior High South and Turner College and Career High School also donated toys to the Pearland Police Department’s Toys for Tots campaign.
The Berry Miller Junior High National Junior Honor Society raised over $3,800 in donations to benefit the B.I.G. Love Cancer Care.
While these are just a few ways students gave back this holiday season, others contributed by volunteering and donating to local organizations or holding food drives to benefit the Pearland Neighborhood Center.

Hand in Hand At the start of this school year a shiny, blue Buddy Bench was installed at the Shadycrest Elementary’s playground for students at recess who want to hang out with a new friend. “It benefits all students in the school,” Life Skills teacher Ruth Mondich said. “When a student wants to play with someone else, but is unable to approach another student, he/she sits on the Buddy Bench. When others see someone sitting, they go and ask that student to play.” The bench is a tool for students who may be shy or have trouble fitting in with others.
Students and staff at Lawhon Elementary are sharing positive words with each other using a bulletin board with the phrase “Take What You Need, Give What You Can.” Staff began writing positive messages on postit notes with hopes the students would take them to give to another student or teacher. After the first week, students began to write their own positive messages to leave for someone else. Many of the messages displayed on the board encourage others to be happy, do the best you can do and to be thankful.

Magnolia Elementary hosted its first multicultural night “Connecting our Cultures” this past November. Students and their families dressed in their country’s native clothes and brought a “taste” of different types of food. They also participated in arts and crafts, viewed art displays and danced.

Nearly 600 Pearland ISD students and their families were able to smile a little brighter this past Christmas, thanks to the generosity of our community. The district’s fifth annual gift giving project matched over 70 sponsors with children to “adopt” for the holidays by buying toys and clothes specifically for each child. Having a RISE mentor helps me because he brought back memories of what my dad and I did before he passed away two years ago.
A friend sent me a link to a young person’s story. As I read it I felt compelled to ask more questions. His story spoke to me. Fortunately, we were able to be matched together. What have you learned from your mentee? Working with him has helped me reinforce the value of promises. If I make a promise to him, it is a promise and cannot be broken under any circumstances. He knows that if I say it is a promise that it will happen. If I do not, he also does not expect it. That way if I am able to make it happen, it is a bigger surprise. What would you say to other people that are considering becoming a RISE mentor? Ask lots of questions. Do not worry about the time commitment. You would be amazed how much you can do in 30 minutes each week.

Dedication & Renovation Celebrations VIRGIL GANT EDUCATION SUPPORT CENTER Beloved Pearland Independent School District Board of Trustee Member Virgil Gant was honored by district officials with the naming of the Education Support Center to the Virgil Gant Education Support Center. “Our school board had the honor of naming the Education Support Center after a man who was active in both this district and our community,” Rebecca Decker, board president, said. “We are proud to pay tribute to Virgil.” Gant served on the Pearland ISD Board of Trustees for a total of 16 years-- 1997-2006 and 2009-16. He held many leadership roles, including board president and was a member of the Long-Range Planning Steering Committee.
RENOVATION CELEBRATIONS Carleston Elementary & Lawhon Elementary Carleston and Lawhon elementary schools recently celebrated the completion of renovation projects with a renovation celebration at each campus. In July 2014, the board of trustees approved for part of the unused monies from the 2006 bond to be used for projects at Pearland HS, Carleston Elementary and Lawhon Elementary. “We are thrilled to provide some necessary renovations and updates to two of our older elementary schools. It’s because of the support of our community that such projects such as these are possible,” Rebecca Decker, board president, said.

Construction has begun at Dawson, Junior High West, Sablatura and Jamison and will be complete in 2018 (Sablatura and Jamison) and 2019 (Dawson and Junior High West). Construction at Pearland and Turner high schools will begin in February 2018, followed by Junior High East in April 2018. All will be completed in 2019. Security upgrades at all schools will be implemented during the summers of 2018 and 2019.

Partners in Education 20 YEARS OF CHEER For the 20th consecutive year, every Pearland ISD school was able to deck their halls with a beautiful live Christmas tree donated by South Park Funeral Home and Cemetery. This longstanding tradition enables each campus to have a festive feel throughout December, with many donating the tree to a family in need when schools release for break. CONSIDERABLE CONTRIBUTIONS The Pearland Rotary Club strives to help meet the needs of Pearland ISD, its students, administrators and faculty. In particular, they find it important to address needs that are not “high attention� items yet are vitally important to having safe, world-class educational facilities. This fall, their members unanimously supported a donation of four automated defibrillators (AEDs) to expand the availability of these devices with the growth of the district.

The Pearland Volunteer Fire Department awarded over $22,000 to the Turner College & Career High School EMT Program to purchase a power stretcher and cardiac monitor. These items are crucial to real-world EMT training in the classroom.

My wife and I have two children in the school district. I’ve lived in Pearland since 2003 and have continuously been involved with the community.
I was involved with the Northern Brazoria County Education Alliance since 2007 and was the Founding President of the Pearland ISD Education Foundation.
Why did you want to serve on the Pearland ISD school board?
Why did you want to serve on the Pearland ISD school board?
When our first child enrolled in Pearland ISD, I was so impressed that I wanted to help ensure continued excellence in education. In your opinion, what makes a school board effective? School boards are most effective when they are aware of the needs of their community. Working with administration to fulfill the needs of the community is the entire reason we have local school boards. What about Pearland ISD are you most proud of? I’m most proud of our students and the incredible things they achieve! In your life, who or what inspires you? I’m deeply inspired by my children and their academic and athletic achievements. (Congrats on making the All-A Honor Roll, guys!) Watching them learn and grow gives me inspiration to be the best husband, father and trustee possible.
I have an overwhelming desire to make sure the future of Pearland is left in the best hands possible. Hopefully during my time on the board, we will be able to attract and retain the best teachers and administrators in our area so that we can produce the highest quality education for the future leaders of Pearland. In your opinion, what makes a school board effective? The school board is effective when they are in tune with the community in which they serve and can strive to exceed those expectations. What about Pearland ISD are you most proud of? I am proud of the increasing AP enrollment and scoring successes, Turner CCHS and the increasing number of Associate Degrees that are obtained. I am also proud of our community for supporting the Education Foundation and the NBCEA so that we can assist our teachers and students to be world-class. In your life, who or what inspires you? I am inspired by the selfless giving of our community and the fact that we work together in the face of adversity.

Bee judges Tori Landis, Dale Pillow, Erin Steele and David Williamson led the rousing hive of players through seven rounds of spelling competition. The winning team “The Legal BEEgles,” a team from Thompson and Horton, persevered through the championship round against “The Killer B’s,” a team of teachers from Dawson High School, including Diana Gano, Mark Lesmeister and Evelyn Zimmerman, and sponsored by Lisa Brown and Scott Durfee. In four years, the Bee has collectively raised over $115,000 for the Education Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that enriches teaching and inspires learning in Pearland ISD. Money raised benefits the Innovative Teaching Grant Program, which funds educational programs and activities in the Pearland Independent School District. FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES GIVING CAMPAIGN, ANNUAL GALA EVENT Pearland ISD Education Foundation recently launched the 2018 Annual Giving Campaign to continue funding outstanding education projects for students in Pearland ISD. The campaign will culminate in a Royal Affair, the third annual Evening for Education Gala, to be held on March 3 at The Citadel in Houston. With a regal theme, guests are called upon to “preserve an eternal legacy of excellence” for the school district. The annual event features dinner, live music, and live and silent auction. New to this year’s campaign, “King & Queen” donors will be recognized as an Adopt-a-Grant sponsor, which includes naming rights to a grant-winning project and opportunity to present check award to grant recipient. Donors of $500 or more will receive complimentary tickets to the gala. Individual gala tickets may be purchased for $175. For more information, visit www.pearlandisd.org/annualgala.
