PEARLAND ISD STANDS OUT AGAIN! Over the past month, two school district metrics were announced by external evaluators.  We prize both as progress toward our goal of becoming “world-class” for the unique student population we serve.   Over the past several years, the “Children at Risk” organization announces academic rankings of all campuses within the greater Houston area. Their stated purpose of the ratings is to determine “which Texas Schools rise above the rest.” They examine student achievement, poverty percentages, student growth and (in secondary schools) college readiness factors. Once again, Pearland ISD has the highest percentage of schools rated A or B among all mid-size and larger school districts in this Houston area. Consequently, and as an example, the Houston Chronicle featured Lawhon Elementary, noting some of the above-and-beyond school activities meriting acclaim.    The Texas Comptroller established ratings that combine student performance and financial efficiency. After initial establishment of these metrics, the TexasSmartSchools organization now publishes an annual rating. Once again, Pearland ISD excels. We are among 28 of the 1,000 school districts in Texas receiving their highest 5-Star Rating. Even fewer districts consistently receive that rating year to year (as we have).  As part of their analysis, TexasSmartSchools illustrates the relative position of comparable districts on a scatter gram chart. In the upper right corner of that chart, reserved for the district with the highest student performance and the lowest per student cost sits Pearland ISD alone among its peers!   There is a drawback to such acclaim. While both illustrate high student achievement, they underline the difficulties we must overcome, given the significantly less than average funding we receive from the state. With greater funding we could do even more. Nevertheless, our community is justifiably proud of the accomplishments of our students, faculty and staff. We are ready to build upon these achievements in the coming 2018-19 school year!

I will miss a lot and mostly my friends. I will miss them because they are very nice to me. Most of them have been in my class with me since Kinder.

I will miss my friends the most because I won’t be able to see them during the summer.

To SeaWorld, because it was a lot of fun to pet the stingrays and dolphins.

My best vacation was when I went to LegoLand in San Diego for Spring Break because it was my first time visiting California and I made lots of memories.

Going swimming and seeing my friends.

I’m mostly looking forward to going to New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia and Washington D.C.

Back to San Antonio, because the times I have gone there it has been a lot of fun.

I would like to go to Europe because there are a lot of great historical things to see.

I look forward to having fun and seeing my friends in my class.

I’m looking forward to playing the saxophone in band.

I’ll miss being able to see friendly faces in the hallways and having in-school responsibilities.

I will miss the interactions. I had such AMAZING teachers that helped pick me up when I was down and inspired me to do my very best. I struggled throughout the year but having to push myself to the very limits and eventually succeed has left me more than satisfied.

Galveston, because I had the opportunity to go on a cruise. It was a new experience and gave me a new perspective of the ocean.

Summer 2016. Aruba and Bonaire. Crystal-clear, blue seas and sandy, white beaches. If I had the chance to go back, I definitely would.

I look forward to going to Universal Studios in Florida this summer! It won’t be my first time out of the state, but Florida is always somewhere I wished to go!

Spending time with family and friends, playing in a Sunday soccer league. There are some new movies and attractions that I would not mind seeing/visiting either. Whatever it is, I am excited and ready to go have fun.

I’d like to go to L.A., specifically around Hollywood. It’s always caught my eye…the views, the city and the recognition it has.

I would choose to travel to Vietnam. As someone of Vietnamese descent, I would love to visit the country that my parents grew up in. I want to be able to understand the true difficulties of what my parents went through and to understand my “roots”.

Taking all the opportunities I can to help out my school and be able to help students too. I also look forward to learning more about my favorite subjects, like science and English!

Graduating and moving on to college, seeing and talking to friends, and exploring new things. I look forward to improving myself, my skills and character. I will continue pursuing my dreams and pushing myself. I am ready for the ’18-19 school year, but of course…I am going to enjoy summer as long as I can! www.pearlandisd.org | 11

Through plenty of laughter, hugs, some tears and joyous hat-tossing, our seniors showed they are prepared to start their next chapters. In April, Berry Miller JH and Rogers MS counselors teamed up to host a Mindfulness Expo geared towards getting the community focused on clearing their mind and getting centered through times of stress and multiple commitments. For Mental Health Awareness Month, Pearland ISD hosted two showings of the documentary Screenagers: Growing Up in a Digital World. Over 500 students, parents and community members attended this free event to hear keynote speaker Dr. Ryan Hill, discuss the importance of destigmatizing mental health issues and suicidal thoughts. Additions and renovations are under construction at Dawson, Turner and Pearland high schools, Sablatura and Jamison middle schools, Junior High West and Junior High East. Construction at Sablatura and Jamison will be complete in August 2018 and the remainder of these projects will be completed in 2019.

Security upgrades at all schools are being implemented during 2018 and 2019. Upgrades include security vestibules, access control card readers, additional cameras and fencing. Designs for the elementary school renovations will begin in the fall of 2018, with construction in 2019/2020. The bond program is progressing on schedule and within budget.

Partners in Education Pearland Lions Club For many years, the Pearland Lions Club has been an outstanding community partner for Pearland ISD students and staff. Through their involvement in our community and their annual events, the Lions are able to raise funds for several district programs and causes including: • Annual holiday gift giving • PACE Center • #iwillASK • Victims of natural disasters • Student scholarships On top of monetary donations, many Lions also give their time to volunteer as RISE Mentors and at numerous events throughout the year. What is the commitment?

• RISE is a school-based mentoring program for Pearland ISD students. • Students are recommended by their campus with parent permission. • Mentors are matched with students based on schedule, availability, personality and interests.

• Mentors meet with their student one day a week for 30 minutes at the campus during school hours. • You are committing to mentor for the duration of the school year, but if you and your mentee are both interested, you may continue meeting in subsequent school years.

High Five Celebration! Foundation commemorates five years of giving, awards over $100,000 to Pearland ISD educators From outdoor learning and cultural art to cutting-edge math and science technology, Pearland ISD Education Foundation awarded $106,075 for “outside-the-box” classroom ideas during its annual Surprize Patrol, held May 23 - 25. Thanks to continued support from annual donations and fundraising events, including the Grown-up Spelling Bee and Evening for Education Gala, the foundation was able to award its largest amount of giving. For the 2018-19 school year, 65 innovative teaching grants were awarded with four projects selected to receive over $4,000. New this year, an Adopt-A-Grant Sponsorship Program was offered to connect community donors with specific grant projects. Reinventing the Wheel, a grant written by Jamison Middle School teacher Vanessa Feldshau to purchase technology in math intervention classes, was funded by Bayway Chevrolet. Throughout Surprize Patrol, foundation board directors and district administrators, along with Dawson and Pearland high school bands, visited campuses to deliver grant recipient awards to the winners. The week was dubbed a “High Five Celebration” as the organization marked five years of giving. Since 2014, the foundation has collectively awarded 233 projects with over $344,000 in grant funds. “We have seen significant growth in innovative education over the past five years,” Chief Foundation Officer Natalie Clogston said. “Through continued contributions and support, such as the Adopt-A-Grant sponsors, we will be able to carry out our mission of enriching teaching and inspiring learning in Pearland ISD classrooms.” 20 | PROGRESS

What is your connection to Pearland ISD outside of being a board member?

I am a former Pearland High School teacher and coach. I also have three children attending Pearland ISD schools and another who recently graduated from Pearland HS.

I graduated from Dawson High School in 2017. I am a proud, 13-year product of Pearland ISD. I’ve lived in Pearland for my whole life.

Why did you want to serve on the Pearland ISD school board?

I want to help build a community where families are proud to live and raise their children, and in turn, where their children want to stay and raise children of their own.

I ran because I wanted to give a voice for my community and give back to the district. I try my best to use my experience as a recent student to bridge the gap between the classroom and administration.

In your opinion, what makes a school board effective? Working as a team makes a school board effective because everyone plays their part to help the district with a proactive vision. Another part that makes an effective board is trustees furthering their professional development by becoming a TASB Master Trustee. I am proud to have received this designation in 2017.

In your opinion, what makes a school board effective?

What about Pearland ISD are you most proud of?

It is rewarding that as a district we are constantly trying to be better and never settle for the status quo. “If you are not getting better, you are getting worse.”

I am proud of what our students are able to accomplish! Our students continue to prove how innovative, resourceful and smart they are – and with each year the bar only gets set higher.

I think teamwork, information and passion all make our school board efficient and effective. When we’re working as a team and have great data and information from the administration, we can do the best for the district. Sometimes we disagree on the issues, but we always strive to do the best for the students.

In your life, who or what inspires you? My mother and father inspire me, as well as the desire to serve the community. I’m always working hard to better the life of my family and our community.

In your life, who or what inspires you? I find the persistence, dedication and intelligence of our students and staff inspiring! The best part of this job is being able to see our district prepare the next generation of leaders, perform beyond belief, and produce for the future!
