Campus Security Recent national events have underscored the critical importance of safety and security on our campuses. As a result of YOUR successful passage of a bond election in November 2016, millions are being spent on new security features for all 23 campuses. We will have security vestibules for the main entry point at each campus. Visitors must be “buzzed in” from a bullet resistant area after submitting credentials for entry – with an associated criminal records check. All of the entry/exit doors on each campus will be electronically monitored from a central location – to determine what doors are unlocked. New campus perimeter fences are being erected where needed. Additional cameras are being added to the hundreds already in place. We’re getting as much of that done between now and August 2018 as possible. In some cases, major renovation at the front of the school requires us to sequence the new vestibules thereafter. And there are other security measures in place that we can’t reveal to the public.

We enjoy a very close relationship with the Pearland Police Department. In addition to the 11 armed School Resource Officers assigned full-time to our schools, we receive additional patrols and other types of police presence. We are installing new technology allowing instant access by police to both their own headquarters and to the camera feeds in all of our schools.

We’re improving the identification of potential student or community threats. We’re training teachers, staff and students on identifying and reporting questionable statements and behavior. Our most recent training is provided by the Pearland police for campus personnel.

I don’t want to give a false sense of total security. Even if we installed maximum security concrete walls and barbed wire, we would not be as secure as U.S. prisons. Why? Prisons don’t allow their entire population in and out of their facility at the beginning, middle and end of each day. Large high schools in the U.S., including our own, have thousands of students in daily attendance. Fitting every student through one or two “choke point” entries at all parts of every day is not feasible. In truth, a determined criminal can overcome most school defenses. Efforts at security are best equipped to discourage, limit and confine bad actors.

Art in Action The new year has begun with a flair for the arts for Pearland ISD students.

Best of Show - “Say Cheese” by Anjali Johnson, Massey Ranch Elementary

Two events, Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Art and Youth Art Month, have had students breaking out their brushes and sketchpads.

HLSR Art Gold Medal - “King of the Hill” - by Faith-Victoria Ni, Pearland Junior High West

Fifteen student artists displayed their best pieces in the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo’s Hayloft Gallery in March.

The district boasted three best of show, four gold medals and eight special merits for the Western-themed art, making this the highest number of art pieces ever represented by the district at the rodeo.

Youth Art Month Pearland Chamber of Commerce CEO Carol Art-Bucek admires student artwork on display for Youth Art Month.

Local businesses served as art galleries for student art as Pearland ISD hosted its ninth annual Youth Art Month Art Walk.

Students displayed their masterpieces in 28 local businesses around Pearland during the month of March. This community-wide art gallery was open to all art lovers.

In addition, several schools throughout the district hosted special art events such as an art auction, family art night and art shows.

Mrs. Clare has hurt knees, I help her with her scooter. I also help her fill in the stick chart and take it to the office.

Work hard in class and do the things they have been working hard to teach us… that would be a gift to them. Or, bring them a gift.

I will miss this year’s teachers because…

Ms. Clare gives out candy as rewards and surprises us with random dances.

They are really nice and funny, and I like how they have taught me in different ways through interactive lessons.

Why are teachers important?

They help us get an education for our real life.

They teach us things so we can move on in life, learn how to do things and grow up to do those things.

Dawson HS

Construction has begun at Dawson, Turner, and Pearland high schools, Sablatura and Jamison middle schools, and PJH West. Construction will be complete in 2018 (Sablatura, Jamison) and 2019 (DHS, TCCHS, PHS, and PJH West).

Construction at PJH East will begin in April 2018 and be completed in 2019.

Security upgrades at all schools will be implemented during the summers of 2018 and 2019. Upgrades include security vestibules, access control card readers, additional cameras and fencing.

Jamison Middle School

Designs for the elementary school renovations will begin in the fall of 2018, with construction in 2019/2020.

The bond program is progressing on schedule and within budget.

What is your connection to Pearland ISD outside of being a board member?

I’m a lifelong member of the Pearland community. My husband, son and I are all Pearland HS graduates. Once my final term is over I plan to stay active in the district and community.

My wife and I have a son in the district. I am a graduate of Pearland HS myself. I work in Pearland and serve as the President of the Pearland Neighborhood Center Board, Treasurer of the Northern Brazoria Education Alliance and Pearland Lions Club.

Why did you want to serve on the Pearland ISD school board?

Honestly, it wasn’t something that I woke up one day saying I want to serve on the school board. Because I was already actively volunteering in the community, I decided to run.

Our district plays a huge role in the success of our students/ community and I wanted to be a part of the process.

In your opinion, what makes a school board effective?

Why did you want to serve on the Pearland ISD school board?

Investing in our children now means a vibrant future for Pearland. I want to be able to provide every child with the education they deserve.

In your opinion, what makes a school board effective?

Teamwork. I believe what makes a school board effective is building a great working relationship with fellow board members. While we won’t always agree, we must be able to agree to disagree in a respectful way. Being able to work toward a common goal for the good of the students and district is a top priority.

The school board must have a vision, create structures to support that vision and be accountable. We must also advocate for our students at every opportunity. Good schools are about much more than covering the curriculum, managing classrooms and preparing students for life after high school. Good schools and districts help students feel accepted and safe.

What about Pearland ISD are you most proud of?

What about Pearland ISD are you most proud of?

The district’s desire to always get better. Instead of being satisfied, district staff are always taking steps to better the educational experience. Administration, teachers and support staff understand their job is to give our children everything they have, and over my years on the board they have done just that.

We are one of the most diverse districts in Texas, and we have programs to support our students such as RISE Mentoring, which help them succeed beyond the classroom.

In your life, who or what inspires you?

My family. They inspire me to always strive to do more and be a better person.

As I spend my time in this community I am most inspired by the volunteers. These are the people who give thankless hours of their time to support a cause, which could ultimately change the life of another individual.

Foundation Gala Raises Funds with Royal-themed Extravaganza With a throng of dazzling tiaras and kingly crowns, set to the majestic backdrop of a candlelit ballroom, Pearland ISD Education Foundation’s annual Evening for Education Gala, dubbed a “Royal Affair,” was a regal extravaganza.

During the royal-themed event, March 3 at The Citadel in Houston, over 320 guests arrived in their best regalia, mingled among the elite and were called upon to support” an educational legacy for our heirs.”

The annual fundraiser featured dinner, live music, auction and dancing. Gala sponsors included Dr. Brett M. Cordes with The Center for ENT, David L. Smith Realty/The Legacy Group, Stanfield Properties, Stantec Architecture and The Stay Focused Team (Bay Area Tutoring, Bright Futures, LLC and PSY Clinic).

Magnolia Elementary teachers and guests enjoyed a majestic evening of regal celebration.

Through the gala event and annual giving campaign, the foundation raised over $148,000. Established in 2014, the foundation supports innovative educational programs and activities that either have not been funded or have been under-funded by the school district’s normal operating budget.

This year, the organization will award Pearland ISD educators up to $115,000 in Innovative Teaching Grants.

Bayway Chevrolet, a 2018 King and Queen donor, will serve as the foundation’s inaugural Adopt-a-Grant sponsor and will award the selected recipient during the annual Surprize Patrol the week of May 21.
