We will have a closed campus on STAAR Testing days, no visitor will be allowed on our campus.

We are approaching very important STAAR Testing dates and we are asking 3rd and 4th grade parents to please make every effort possible to schedule medical appointments afterschool and refrain from checking students out early during this time. Also parents are not allowed to visit the campus during testing dates, we will have a closed campus on the days listed below.

Construction Update

Phase one of construction is in full swing with a busy list of construction work this month. All interior framing, electrical and plumbing has been completed on the new wing. If the weather stays dry, you will begin to see sheetrock and brick going up. We still anticipate opening the new wing during our 2016-2017 school year.

The last day of school will be on Thursday, June 2, 2016, this will be an Early Release day for students, students will be dismissed at 1:00PM Pre-K students will have a different schedule on this day as follows: AM Pre-K 8:00 – 10:00am PM Pre-K 11:00 – 1:00pm Please make arrangements to pick up your child (ren) at 1:00 p.m.

Students should arrive in their home room teacher’s classroom at 5:30PM. Attire theme is cool and jazzy.

As our countdown to the final weeks of school begins, please keep close track of your child’s Library books.

We are looking forward to field day on Friday, May 27th. We need volunteers to help monitor field day stations. PTA will be contacting volunteers to work the snow cone station and to help with popcorn for our movie time. Watchdogs are needed to help us monitor the inflatable station so please let the coaches know if you are able to help on that day.

One of the stations your student(s) will rotate through is BINGO, and we would like to offer prizes for the winners. We are still accepting prize donations for ages 5-11 such as dollar store water toys, jump ropes, balls, bubbles, puzzles, games, coloring books, etc. Please send all donations to Coach Rodriguez or Coach Randall no later than Friday, May 20th, so we can make sure that we have enough age appropriate prizes for each grade level. Thank you so much for your support, and we are looking forward to a fun day with your student(s)!

PTA is very supportive of our field day and we want to thank them and let them know how very much we appreciate their contributions to P.E. this school year.

Communities In Schools is sponsoring a Skate Night on May 19, 2016 for all students who participated in CIS this school year.

Students will receive an invitation to the Event by the end of April. All students attending must have a permission form and must be accompanied by an adult who will stay with him/her for the duration of the Event. There is no cost to either the parent or the student for the skates and for skating. Refreshments will not be provided by CIS but if you so wish, you may purchase soft drinks and pizza at the skating rink. Siblings of CIS students are also invited to attend.

Escape Family Center will complete the Series of classes on “Building Confident Families” on May 2, 2016. We look forward to inviting Escape to present these and other topics to our Carleston Parents the coming school year, 2016-17. The parents, who attended, were very happy with the series and they expressed that the classes helped them in a very positive way.

The last day for CIS Lunch Groups is Friday, May 20th and Thursday, May 19th for Adult ESL group. CIS has had a successful year at Carleston and we look forward to next school year.

Carleston Parents One of the most beneficial things you can do for your children this summer is to keep them reading! Please see the chart below to see what a huge difference reading just 20 minutes a day can make in your child’s life. While it is important for our Carleston Cubs to work on their own reading, it is as equally important for them to be read to as often as possible.

When reading to your child, select a book that is a level up (harder) than the books they are reading on their own. This will encourage their reading stamina, increase their vocabulary, and often get them excited about finishing on their own the very book you are reading to them. Local book stores and libraries always having reading incentive programs over the summer with fun prizes for the kids. And I am always available for suggestions or tips on how to continue to encourage a love of reading and books. Thank you for all that you do to support our Carleston Readers. Attention GT nominated Kinder, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade students and parents: Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade students who were nominated to be assessed for GT services by September 30, 2015 will receive the results in the mail on or before April 15, 2016.

Using Bibliotherapy with Gifted Students Often times, gifted students feel like they don’t belong with other students their age or that they are different in some way. Bibliotherapy, the process of having a student read a book to learn about social/emotional issues or developmental needs by identifying with a character from a book, is often used with gifted children as a way to learn that there are others who have the same feelings, concerns, or problems and that they are not alone. There are a multitude of fictional books whose main characters are gifted. However, literary nonfiction can also be used for bibliotherapy by studying famous people who are thought to be gifted such as George Washington Carver, Albert Einstein, Marie Curie, and Ellen Ochoa.

Another famous gifted person is Leonardo da Vinci, who was born on April 15, 1452 in Italy. Some people say he was the most talented person to have lived, with knowledge and curiosity that spanned a wide range of fields. As an artist, he created the Mona Lisa and the Vitruvian Man among other paintings and sculptures. He studied flight and designed plans for flying machines which were impossible to make because of the limited technology in his time. He even wrote in “mirror direction” meaning the opposite direction to what is normal so you would have to use a mirror to read it. He was a brilliant mathematician – seeing a mathematical connection to almost everything. He also studied music and designed new instruments.
