By Dmitri Shostakovich A lively romance — Shostakovich absolutely lets loose in this bop of a waltz, dropped sometime after 1956. Suite for Variety Orchestra, the collection this song comes from, was for many years thought to be the missing Jazz Orchestra 2, which was lost sometime during the second world war. This turned out not to be the case, as Jazz Orchestra 2 was found in 1999, but what’s in a name anyways?

This song off Emancipator’s 2017 album Baralku has all the makings of good lo-fi. Despite layering enough instruments to fill an orchestra, the song manages to feel minimalistic and uncluttered. With a history of classical training and a number of jam bands, Emancipator has a wide array of musical experience to draw on, which he certainly does here.

“Abusey Junction”

If there were one song to soothe a troubled soul, this would be it.

Drawing on the West African and Inner London influences of its musicians, the eight piece band Kokoroko has gained recognition across Europe for their horn-heavy sounds. “Abusey Junction” was first contributed to the compilation album We Out Here, from which it gained recognition and won Track of the Year in the 2019 Worldwide awards. Although not a banger in the conventional sense, this track serves as a great reminder that not everything needs to go hard all the time.

Kurup has had his music described as “shadows creeping across a forest floor.” Listening to his compositions, the imagery feels appropriate. Dark and brooding, “Joeira” balances downtempo instruments with rattles, taps, and hisses, which give the song an organic feel. It also makes you want to check your shoes for spiders before putting them on.

Featuring over 30 artists, Vancouver Special is an intricate look at the contemporary arts community in Vancouver. The exhibit features young emerging artists alongside established artists. Showcasing decades worth of art, this exhibition series will occur every three to five years. Pieces vary in style and scale, with themes including cultural resilience, embodied knowledge, and identity performance. The Tyee states this exhibit is a “reminder that art needs to be seen in the flesh.” Be sure to check out the gallery’s other exhibits, like Jan Wade: Soul Power and Yoko Ono: Growing Freedom. Enjoy the work of BC comic artists through a self-guided walking tour on Granville Island! Seven bus shelter-sized comics are located around the Island, each of which showcases an individual’s experience during the pandemic. This exhibit is organized by Cloudscape Comics and the Heritage Vancouver Society. Comics touch on experiences of anti-Asian racism, the opioid and homelessness crisis, being a frontline worker, and more. Each piece comes with a book pairing. The SFU School for International Studies, David Lam Centre, and department of history will jointly host a book talk on China Unbound: A New World Disorder by Joanna Chiu and In the Camps: China’s High-Tech Penal Colony by Darren Byler. Both books address the use and implications of police surveillance on those speaking out against injustice towards vulnerable populations, like the Uyghurs. Chiu is a senior journalist at the Toronto Star and Byler is an assistant professor of international studies at SFU. The event will be hosted in-person and live-streamed via Zoom. The women’s volleyball team continued their winning streak last weekend, adding two more victories to move to (14–4) on the season. Despite being up two sets to one against Northwest Nazarene University (5–14), their two game lead was erased. Northwest Nazarene rallied back to win the next two games before SFU would win the fifth and deciding game.

For a second straight week, Setter Julia Tays was recognized as one of Great Northwest Athletic Conference’s (GNAC) Volleyball Top Performers of the week for her season high 62 assists against Northwest Nazarene. She also picked up GNAC’s Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week. With only a handful of games left in the season, the women will look to beat their best record, set in 2016, by going 21–4. To do so, they will have to take on two teams they’ve previously lost to: the University of Alaska Anchorage and Western Washington University. It was a different story for the men’s team, who earned redemption after placing second in the 2019 GNAC Championships. Two additional SFU runners were able to finish among the top 10 for the men, beating the reigning champions, Western Washington — “the third-closest in history.”

The women’s and men’s cross country teams won the GNAC Championships this past week in Lacey, Washington. This marked the first championship for the men and an end to a perfect season for the women. Once more, the work of runners Olivia Willet and Aaron Ahl propelled their teams forward with two first place finishes respectively, also earning them GNAC Athlete of the Year. Willet clocked in at 21:27.3 in her last GNAC championship race, six seconds before the second place finisher.

Freshman Katie Cameron, senior Alision AndrewsPaul, junior Megan Roxby and Emily Chilton, all finished within the top 10.

GNAC’s Team of the Week are competing in the NCAA Championships this Saturday in Oregon.

Stay tuned for an interview with junior Aaron Ahl next week on finally being able to turn the tide and claim a championship with SFU.

The women finished last week 1–1 at home. They started the week with a 1–0 win against Montana State Billings (6–7–3) before surrounding three goals against the 4th ranked Seattle Pacific University (11–1–1) in a 3–0 loss. Freshman Raegan Mackenzie recorded the lone goal of the game in the 81st minute off a pass from teammate Annika Gross. SFU goalkeeper Nicole Anderson earned her second shutout of the season, turning away the four shots she faced.

SFU fell behind early against Seattle Pacific University, conceding two goals in the first half, before giving up a late goal. You can support the women’s team at their last game of the season this Saturday against Western Oregon (5–8–2).

SFU administration announces updated health measures New guidelines ensure a safer, more accessible campus for students and faculty Carter Hemion Humour Editor

ANNOUNCEMENTS SFU administration announced updated health and safety guidelines applicable to all three campuses. The new guidelines, rather than focusing on pressing issues of the pandemic, highlight more general measures for accessibility and safety.

HEALTH & COUNSELLING SERVICES TO CLOSE In an effort to better serve students’ health, all Health & Counselling Services (HCS) locations will be closing by the end of 2021. HCS representatives confirmed they will reduce services through the end of the year until permanently closing.

The official statement said, “Students can do anything they put their minds to. By giving them sick notes and diagnosing injuries and illnesses, we discourage them from going to school when they could still be learning. Instead, students should practice grounding exercises and mindfulness in the classroom, and they can accomplish anything.”

SEATBELTS OPTIONAL ON CAMPUS ROADS Beginning November 1, seatbelts are recommended but not required on campus roads. President Joy Johnson said, “Despite province-wide restrictions, public post-secondary institutions are not bound by law to enforce rules about wearing seatbelts on their campuses.”

Similarly, administration acknowledged campus security cannot ask to see driver’s license cards as many businesses may for identification and admission purposes.

According to the HCS website, this update is due in part to “protecting the freedoms of anti-belt students.” Some students who use transit do not have the medical option of wearing a seatbelt; however, the majority of non-belt students believe it is their right to not wear a seatbelt while driving, and SFU respects that choice.

Administration confirmed that a new solution to ableism was stair-ing us right in the eyes.

UPDATED LANGUAGE GUIDELINES In conjunction with administrative decisions, the Centre for Accessible Learning (CAL) has updated their guide on accessible language and plans to distribute it to professors by the end of 2023.

Students will be required to register how they identify themselves, as long as it’s in the four-part drop down menu. With regards to language changes, website examples include “students who have an ability,” “persons with neurotypicality,” and “persons who may or may not be somewhat ability [sic].”

CAL’s website said, “We do not see disability. In fact, we actively avoid seeing it. This is the most efficient way to ensure treating all students equally.”

STAIRS CLOSED FOR EQUITY In recognition of the physical barriers some disabled students face, SFU will be closing all staircases so all students can access campus equally. The official announcement stated “elevators are no longer an access tool, but the only way to access campuses from now on. In a random survey of distance education students with neurotypicality and ability, we found that removing staircases would be our best option.”

Administration confirmed all broken elevators may be addressed by printing a “closed” sign within 48–72 hours of being reported.

The announcement also included plans to add a written acknowledgement of privilege to each staircase and to use $20 million of student tuition to turn each staircase into a work of art by the Fall 2031 semester.
