GSWS 102-­‐3 Feminist Action (Breadth-­‐Humanities)

Lecture Thursdays: 10:30 – 12:20 Jen Marchbank

In this course we will explore the history of feminist actions and social movements from the mid -­‐eighteenth century to today. We will explore histories and activisms from around the globe. We will use texts created by activists from a range of historical periods and geographies to come to an understanding of the diversity of feminist actions.

GSWS 102-­‐3 Introduction to Gender in Indigenous Literature and Film

Lecture Mondays: 17:30 – 20:20 June Scudeler In their essay “Stolen From Our Bodies: First Nations Two-­‐Spirits/Queers and the Journey to a Sovereign Erotic,” Cherokee scholar Qwo-­‐Li Driskill positions the Sovereign Erotic as “wholeness healed and / or healing from the historical trauma that First Nations people continue to survive, rooted within the histories, traditions, and resistance struggles of our nations.” By creating narratives that centre Indigenous ways of knowing, Indigenous writers, artists, and filmmakers counteract colonial stereotypes.

Analyzing how colonization “straightened” Two-­‐Spirit and women’s roles will enable students to understand and appreciate Indigenous people’s continuing resurgence and resilience.

GSWS 318-­‐4 Drag Cultures: From Riots to Rupaul (Vancouver) Mondays: 17:30 – 21:20 Nadine Boulay

We will examine different iterations of drag performance within LGBTQ history; the different ways that drag and drag performers have operated in explicitly queer/transgender spaces, such as bars or nightclubs; and more recently as reality TV stars, and in ‘family-­‐friendly’ contexts, reading to children in public libraries (Drag Queen Story Hour). We will explore representations of drag performers/performances in literature (Our Lady of the Flowers), film (Divine), and TV (Drag Race; Dragula). Students will explore the ways that different drag cultures have been mediated through experiences of race and racialization; poverty and upward mobility; and gender difference. We will read accounts of drag cultures and performers as revolutionaries and radicals within social movement organizing, including the Stonewall Riots and early pride marches and protests. We will consider the implications of mainstreaming certain representations of drag, and the impact of wide-­‐spread visibility and popularity of drag queens outside queer and transgender spaces.

GSWS 319-­‐4 Gender, Migration, and Health in Canada & Beyond (Vancouver)

Tuesdays: 17:30 – 21:20 Michelle Walks

Migration and transnationalism impact health experiences and health outcomes, even when moving to a developed nation. This course investigates the intersectional experiences of gender, migration, and health from a feminist perspective. It will focus mostly on migrants health-­‐related experiences, mostly after arrival to Canada, although we will compare these experiences to migrants’ health experiences elsewhere. With an intersectional lens, this course also investigates age, religion, disability, and sexuality, while highlighting gendered experiences of health. As many health care providers work transnationally, this will also be considered in our scope.

GSWS 321-­‐4 Intro to Porn Studies: The Poetics and Politics of Sex (D200) Wednesdays: 9:30 – 13:20 Vaibhav Saria

Why is pornography so difficult to define but yet very easy to recognize? Through a genealogical method this course will investigate the circulation of images and ideas that constitute pornography and study the anxieties that it has generated at various moments in time and how these anxieties are related to the disciplining and policing of sexuality. It traces the various academic debates, and events in film-­‐making, literature and everyday life related to pornography, which will be used as prisms to understand and study sexuality.
