GSWS 102-­‐3 Feminist Action (Breadth-­‐Humanities)

Lecture Thursdays: 10:30 – 12:20 Jen Marchbank In this course we will explore the history of feminist actions and social movements from the mid -­‐eighteenth century to today. We will explore histories and activisms from around the globe. We will use texts created by activists from a range of historical periods and geographies to come to an understanding of the diversity of feminist actions.

GSWS 311-­‐4 Modernizing Women: Canadian Women in Historical Perspective, 1870s – 1970s

Thursdays: 13:30 – 17:20 Lindsay Pattison This course examines modern Canadian history through the lens of women’s experiences. We will explore how the development and organization of the Canadian state affected women’s lives while paying close attention to the ways in which the nation, in turn, has been shaped in the arenas of cultural, economic, and political life by women from a diversity of class, ethnic, racial, and regional backgrounds. Themes to consider will include work, marriage, family, sexuality, colonialism, law, activism, and popular culture.

GSWS 319-­‐4 Gender, Migration, and Health in Canada & Beyond

Tuesdays: 17:30 – 21:20 (Vancouver) Michelle Walks Migration and transnationalism impact health experiences and health outcomes, even when moving to a developed nation. This course investigates the intersectional experiences of gender, migration, and health from a feminist perspective. It will focus mostly on migrants health-­‐related experiences, mostly after arrival to Canada, although we will compare these experiences to migrants’ health experiences elsewhere. With an intersectional lens, this course also investigates age, religion, disability, and sexuality, while highlighting gendered experiences of health. As many health care providers work transnationally, this will also be considered in our scope.

GSWS 320-­‐4 Feminist Rage and Popular Misogyny

Thursdays: 13:30 – 17:20 Natasha Patterson

#MeToo. Greta Thunberg. Insecure. Christine Blasey Ford. The Handmaids Tale. The list goes on of contemporary media products and news stories that reflects women’s collective rage and despair at the white supremacist, heteronormative, capitalist patriarchy. Yet such examples seem to counter the popular feminism (in the form of white feminism, postfeminism and neoliberal feminism) that currently shapes the cultural landscape; indeed, these moments of anger and frustration seem more like a direct response to the rise of “popular misogyny” as conceptualized by feminist media studies scholar Sarah Banet-­‐Weiser. Therefore, this Special Topics course, is an attempt to parse out these current issues and concerns as they are constructed, reported on, and circulated in popular culture. The course will be organized around the following key ideas/issues: popular feminism and its relationship to popular misogyny, and examining and critiquing relevant dominant media discourses; exploring various media (film, TV, comedy, news) that mediate these feelings of rage and despair; thinking about ways to intervene in, and respond to the media as feminists and consumers.

GSWS 331-­‐4 Queer Genders

Wednesdays: 17:30 – 21:20 (Vancouver) Mary Shearman Queer Genders Femmes, Queens, and Fantasies of Femininity This course critically interrogates genders and presentations that engage with femininity. We will explore how femininity and queerness meet at intersections of race, class, age, location, and ability and how these intersections so frequently framed as points of oppression can also be sites of bodily resistance and identity empowerment. We will dissect dominant cultural representations of femininity and explore ‘femme’ as both a political and de-­‐politicized identity, category and label. We will use feminist and queer theories to unpack the linkages between femininity, weakness, sensitivity and other supposed inherent traits with their corresponding loaded meanings. Our studies will include creative works as we both pursue and destabilize the holistic femme identity.
