Affordable housing for graduate students: Graduate student housing is not scheduled to expand until 2028. I will work with the administration in finding a balanced approach that will advance the date when new housing units become available to graduate students.

Supervision for the 21st century: I will work with SFU as part of their student experience initiative to improve the supervisory experience for graduate students.

Standardization of student representation at SFU: I will advocate for a uniform approach to student engagement across faculties and departments that supports meaningful student consultation practices.

GSWS 102-­‐3 Feminist Action (Breadth-­‐Humanities)

Lecture Tuesdays: 10:30 – 12:20 Jen Marchbank In this course we will explore the history of feminist actions and social movements from the mid -­‐eighteenth century to today. We will explore histories and activisms from around the globe. We will use texts created by activists from a range of historical periods and geographies to come to an understanding of the diversity of feminist actions.

GSWS 200-­‐3: Feminisms Without Borders

Thursdays: 14:30 – 17:20 Mandy Koolen This course will explore the interrelationship between local and global manifestations of feminist activism in both the economic south and the economic north. We will examine the reasons that various postcolonial, Indigenous, and transnational feminists have problematized the notion of “global sisterhood” and the valuable insights and changes that have resulted from their critiques of the Eurocentrism of certain types of Western feminism (e.g. liberal feminism, radical feminism, and global feminism). While attending to the dangers associated with conflating the experiences of women living in diverse parts of the world, we will also consider how cross-­‐cultural collaboration can proceed in a respectful manner with an incorporation of diverse women’s voices.

GSWS 319-­‐4 Sport Through a Feminist Lens

Mondays: 13:30 – 17:20 Tiffany Muller Myrdahl

Consider the following sport “moments”: the persistence of sex-­‐testing that targets female athletes; US athletes kneeling during the national anthem to demonstrate support for the Black Lives Matter movement; continued efforts to change racist team names and mascots; disputes over inequitable resource allocations for men’s and women’s teams; protests in Brazil during the World Cup and Rio Olympics. Analyzing these disparate examples requires asking how relations of power inhabit and become manifest in sport: in its institutions, spaces, media coverage, and popular discourse. This course addresses this and related questions to interrogate the social investment in sport as a “neutral” site where athletic excellence is performed and consumed.

GSWS 320-­‐4 Gender, Environment and Climate Justice

Thursdays: 13:30 – 17:20 Vancouver Kiera J. Anderson

This class focuses on how women have been affected by environmental destruction and climate change, as well as their relationship with the earth more broadly. Taking the recent protests at Standing Rock and against the Kinder Morgan pipeline as our starting point, we will contextualise those two events within a longer history of land rights and colonisation, environmental degradation, and multinational trade and climate change agreements. We will look at women’s experiences around the world. We will also look at examples closer to home, such as the ‘man camps’ of oil workers in North Dakota and Alberta, the effect of hurricanes and flooding in New Orleans and Puerto Rico, the anti-­‐logging protests in Clayoquot Sound on Vancouver Island, as well as more recent anti-­‐pipeline protests at Standing Rock and on Burnaby Mountain.

GSWS 433-­‐4 Gender, Violence and Resistance

Thursdays: 13:30 – 17:20 Surrey Jen Marchbank This seminar-­‐based course provides a gendered analysis of violence and resistance to violence. It ranges from a gendered understanding of political states through to individual experiences, institutional situations and militarized aspects. We will address violence and resistance through feminist perspectives and use theories from critical studies of masculinity to come to an interdisciplinary understanding of the course themes. We will examine violence and resistance in the home, in the streets, in communities, in discourses and during conflict and war. Throughout we will explore the constructions of gender, women, men, transgender and the interplay of ethnicity and sexuality.

WHAT GRINDS OUR GEARS? Burnaby campus’ constantly imperfect temperature Most students would agree that the worst part about winter at SFU is getting off the bus at the top of Burnaby Mountain to temperatures significantly lower than where you boarded it.

After walking from the bus to my classes, it’s usually a relief to walk inside a building and be greeted with the warmth of the great indoors.

That is, until I walk into my lecture hall and feel like I’ve stepped back outside on the mountain.

It’s gotten to the point where I have spent eight-hour days at school without taking my puffer jacket off once. I don’t know much about the school’s heating system, but somehow the frozen journey feels like it never ends.

Believe it or not, this phenomenon is even worse in the summer. If I’m coming to school on a sweltering 30-degree afternoon, I’m most likely dressed for that temperature. I’m either forced to endure freezing arms and legs for my entire lecture, or bring an entirely different outfit just to wear in class. We all know that blasting the air con isn’t cheap, but it definitely doesn’t feel like our tuition fees go toward keeping us at the right warmth.

t’s about time SFU finally recognized us, its students, for all we do. From the countless hours of late-night Netflix binge-watching studying and essaywriting to the ridiculous amount of time we spend on transit, it’s time we get credit for our hard work.

SFU has released an official list of the hardest working students who have broken student records and finally made a name for themselves.

REBECCA LINDEN

Most hours spent staying awake studying for an exam We’re all great contenders, but this student has gone above and beyond the call of duty. In breaking this record, Rebecca has transcended to a level of sleep deprivation where no one has gone before.

She went beyond the 24-hour mark of impaired coordination, memory, and judgement. She passed through the emotional rollercoaster of 36 hours, soon followed by the involuntary naps and zoning out of 48 hours and the hallucinations of 72 hours. It was a hard time, and it won her the title of the school’s Resident Zombie.

SFU’s greatest essay writer on topics they don’t know anything about This student never turned up to lecture, never did a single pre-reading, and turned in the greatest piece of literature known to humankind: “The B.S. essay.”

Joseph deserves to be recognized for his unedited, Red Bull-fueled masterpiece. Let’s be honest: the essay is so confusing and talks itself in so many circles that the TA and professor gave him a good grade only because they didn’t want to admit that they couldn’t understand it. SFU’s top coffee consumer This outstanding individual likely has unlimited funds and an unparalleled love for the caffeinated beverage. Likely carrying more than six cups of coffee to her two-hour lecture, Chloe is an inspiration to us all. While her productivity is questionable, her ability to keep her shaking hands steady enough to fill out a Scantron is commendable.

Most SFU merchandise worn at one time Some people tolerate their school, some people like their school, but this record could only be shattered by a student who is truly in love with SFU. Exclusively shopping for his clothes, dishes, supplies, and furniture at the bookstore, Faraj is the epitome of school pride, and he wants everyone to know where his degree came from. Although it is not known for certain, it is rumoured that he keeps asking where he can buy his own McFogg the Dog Mascot costume.
