Wellness Tip of the Month

We all have goals we set out to achieve, but how do we keep on track with those goals when we have social temptations we want so badly to indulge in?

On Mother’s Day, millions of people are going to take their mothers out and treat them to a meal. This can be an obstacle when you are trying to adhere to a specific diet, taking away some of the things we enjoy like dining out and parties can deter us from staying on track. So here are a few tips to keep you on track but also allow you to enjoy the moment.

When dining out, consider these tips:

• Having a light snack that is nutrient dense will help with satiety and prevent overeating.

• Viewing the menu in advance to decide what you’d like to eat and aren’t deciding at the last minute making less healthy choices.

• Decide on the number of drinks you wish to consume and account those calories into your daily intake. (Keep in mind that dietary guidelines for Americans is one standard drink for females and two standard drinks for males per day.)

• Have your first drink be a nonalcoholic drink, then alternate between alcohol and water.

• Request substitutions or alternates at the restaurant. (i.e.- instead of french fries, have the baked potato or substitute for a side salad).

Whether the occasion is Mother’s Day, a birthday, a wedding or an office party, having a plan in place will help you keep sight of your health goals and will always benefit you if you stick to it!
