Supplements

Wellness Tip of the Month

Do you consider a multivitamin a supplement?

Do you take a multivitamin?

Did you check to see if the vitamin you are taking is benefiting you? How do you know what is the “best” vitamin to take?

Here’s some information to help you make a better, more informed decision on your choice of supplements.

All of the vitamins and nutrients we need can come from a well balanced nutrient dense diet, but let’s face it, more than 65% of Americans do not follow the idea of a “healthy diet.” Also, a “healthy diet” varies person to person; be it vegan, or paleo, or keto, or mediterranean; there are so many “diets” out there... but that’s another month’s focus. This month let’s stick to the supplements.

So, returning to the questions “Do you take a multivitamin?” and “Do you consider a multivitamin a supplement?” If not, you should. Multivitamins have been shown to fill in the nutrient gap in our daily nutrition.

Is your vitamin benefiting your health needs? One way to be sure you are taking a quality vitamin is to read the labels and do your own personal research. The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) do not have to approve the label prior to marketing or sales.

So how do you, the consumer, know what to trust? And what’s the “best” vitamin to take?

There are several independent testing facilities that check the quality of the supplements being put to market, they are: NSF international (NSF), US Pharmacopia (USP), Consumer Lab, Banded Substances Control Group (BSCG), and Informed Choice. When choosing your vitamin, it is wise to make sure it has the mark of approval by one of these Verification Programs. These facilities verify that what ingredients are on the label are actually in the product and its potency. Moreover, they make sure there aren’t any harmful contaminants or banned substances being added.

I also need to point out that you can in fact overdose on a vitamin, so if you feel you are deficient or unsure of where to start please consult your physician or a dietitian, don’t make yourself into a test subject.

Check out this list of what to look for in your multivitamins:
