SERMON OUTLINE FAITHFULNESS THAT RISKS
Cultivate: How God Grows the Fruit of the Spirit In Us Matthew 25:14–30
Is being timid a sin? Jesus tells a series of stories about how to live while we await his return. Jesus’ Teaching
The question it asks
The ten bridesmaids Matthew 25:1-13
Are you prepared for his arrival?
The talents Matthew 25:14–30
What are you doing with what he entrusted to you?
The sheep and the goats Matthew 25:31–46
How are you treating others in Christ?
1. Faithfulness begins by receiving “He called his servants and entrusted his wealth to them.” – Matthew 25:14 The parable begins with grace. Before the servants accomplish anything, the Master gives something extraordinarily valuable to each of them. It is not mine. It is entrusted to me.
2. Faithfulness puts what it receives to work “The man who had received five bags of gold went at once and put his money to work.”– Matthew 25:16 The first two servants do not merely protect what the Master gave them. They act—immediately. They accept the possibility of loss because the Master entrusted his wealth to them for a purpose. Faithfulness asks, “How can I put what God has given me to work for what God loves?”
3. Fear buries what grace has given “So I was afraid and went out and hid your gold in the ground.” – Matthew 25:25 THE SERVANT’S PAT TERN "I knew…" → "I was afraid…" → "I hid…" What we believe about God determines how we invest our lives. The servant calls the Master harsh—even though the Master has entrusted him with a fortune! His distorted picture of the Master produces anxiety, withdrawal, and concealment. He feared failure more than he trusted his God.
4. Faithfulness enters the Master’s joy “Well done, good and faithful servant! … Come and share your master’s happiness!”– Matthew 25:21 We are created to live toward a goal and to long for someone’s approval. Faithfulness redirects that longing toward the only praise that finally matters. The Master’s joy is already there, and he invites us to enter it. The great ambition of the Christian life is to hear God’s “Well done!”
My Next Faithful Risk: What has God entrusted to me?
What have I been tempted to bury or protect?
What faithful risk may God be asking me to take?
Faithfulness invests. Fear buries. “The frontiers of the kingdom of God were never advanced by people of caution.” — J. Oswald Sanders
